Like many ghost stories (a subgenre I love), this is perhaps more of a family drama than an actual horror film. Framing the narrative through the POV of the ghost itself, in fact, strips it of most of the elements that could be read as scary, and even gives it a bit of a melancholy edge that feels appropriate.
As it often is the case with some late Soderbergh, the screenplay might be a bit thin in of characterization/development, but his treatment of it elevates it into an interesting experiment, and finds the emotional essence here.
I'll get the quibbles out of the way first:
- The first half tested my patience – it's basically a whole hour of table-setting by exposition upon exposition upon exposition;
- For this material I think the cinematography is a bit nondescript; a more stylish approach would have probably benefitted the film.
But the second half is a LOT better, and the peaks it reaches are indeed crazy high – especially in the musical moments everyone has already talked about,…
