I'm Your Venus

2024

★★ Watched

Moving – particularly when focusing on Venus’s life and legacy – but the majority of this bizarrely foregrounds her 3 biological brothers and their quest to ‘solve’ her murder. I wanted to see a film which talked to people who actually knew Venus as she was, not three men who seem to have practically disowned her and now want to make amends. I can also see no reason why the film felt it necessary to include gruesome ‘uncovered’ details of her final moments. It felt obscene and disrespectful.

Sinners

★★★½ Watched

Coogler has a great sense for violence; the images here are grimy, gothic, operatic. The whole thing feels huge and dirty. It's a nice world to live in. The film is most effective in its second act, a terrifically paced, single-location vampire film that wrings intelligent resonances out of its concept – the vampires represent both the allure and the violence of universalism – whilst navigating a multitude of genre tropes in smart, efficient ways. It all falls to pieces…

A horror movie in which memory is the killer and humanity is the victim.

Sexiest movie ever made. Nothing more sensual than metal on metal, broom broom goes the engine baby and I'm revving for more. Gestural and sensual and everything cinema can and should be.
