John Wick: Chapter 2

2017

★★★★½ Liked Rewatched

Loses a bit of the urgency found in the other entries due to so much focus on the world building as opposed to Wick's problem but it's still miles ahead of most action sequels. That said, the entire back half and the mirror sequence rule.

An action film that frames the hero as the angel of death for anyone who crosses him would be an impossible task in most cases if not for the simple hook that every pet lover can relate to and the video game logic that's secretly baked into the world around him.

For the Ultimate Edition.

Batman v Superman is quite possibly the world's most misunderstood movie. For 3 hours Zack Snyder straight up repudiates Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and in the end shows Batman and Superman why they need each other. Everything that book tore apart (their friendship and Superman's place this in the world) this movie puts back in place with a complex plot that dares to ask the audience to pay attention and just go with it. It's a political thriller that happens to feature the world's finest finding their way again after both looked into the abyss and blinked.
