But seriously, this is a pretty decent eco horror.

The set design is pretty sleek too.

Beyond that, the concept is pretty great, but the execution isn't fantastic. It feels very baby's first sci-fi dystopia. The Brave New World reference was fun.

It's not awful though, and there's a place for films like this. This is like a gateway film to get young teens interested in watching other films, and that's cool.

Cute, stylish animation, and a collection of three really fun short stories that come together for the second half of the film. The Predator designs are great. It makes sense, then, that it'd lead to fan theories that Walker died in the beginning of the film and the rest is his death dream.

- Who the hell is Josh and his team of white women wizards? If they're FBI too, won't there be a record of them doing this? If they're going rogue because Josh is buddies with the Wayans, why didn't the film show us that at all?

- Did that transformation montage really only take the 3 hours they told the captain it was going to take for the to arrive?

- If it did take 3 hours for that transformation with a team of a dozen people, how do they just change between white chick and Wayan at will later in the film?

- Did the Wilson sisters really just stay in a hotel for several days just because what they thought were two rando drivers told them to? Did these socialites really not get in touch with anyone to say they weren't at the Hamptons?

- How does Denise Porter, who pointedly tells us it's her job as a reporter to know who people are to explain how she (mis)identifies Brittany Wilson, not instantly recognise that Marcus isn't the supposedly famous American football player Latrell Spencer?

Dave is simple and sweet. The character and the film.

It's sadly funny that "what if we replaced the head of state with a genuinely good person" is an interesting enough concept for a feature film.

There's some nice messages in Dave. It's a common idea that the best leaders are the ones who don't want to be a leader, and this film draws from that idea.

The Hourglass Sanatorium has the most wonderful dreamlike quality. Transitions between scenes are flawless, they don't feel like transitions at all - the film flows between all these interesting settings as Józef fluctuates between serious and aggrieved and and being filled with a childlike wonder.

The premise is interesting, a sanatorium that uses the theory of relativity to sort of, but not really, turn back time and explore different paths that could have happened.

It's creative, thought-provoking, and at times pretty depressing. The style feels like it must have influenced Terry Gilliam down the line.

Overall I really liked Sinners. I loved getting an hour of setting the scene. The ending is fantastic, though a little strange that we get some credits before an important closing scene that impacts your perspective on the rest of the film.

I wasn't a big fan of the deliberately anachronistic blues singing scene, where we see that DJ and the woman twerking. On its own, it's fine and well made, but it just felt out-of-place and I felt it broke the immersion.

I don't think the action sequences were handled well - and I thought the moment Grace Chow invited the vampires in was just really dumb. This should have been an easy film to survive, you just needed to stay in the club until sunrise.

Everything outside of that though, I thought was great. It's like the Kray twins in From Dusk Till Dawn. I liked when Smoke shot all the racists.

The whole film is one basketball match with flashbacks which show you the characters stories and feeds into the way they play and relate to each other. I don't give a crap about basketball but I do give a crap about his film-making and this is it.

An anime basketball match is as exciting as it sounds. All the foot movements, the feints, they're all so dramatic and full of adrenaline.

There are some films where the most notable thing about them is that they're considered controversial.

I don't mind giving them a go because I can get curious. They're usually more misses than hits, but I can get a pleasant surprise from time to time and find a film I enjoy past its transgressions.

The first Human Centipede, for example, I thought was okay. I didn't love it, but I thought it had an interesting concept and succeeded in its aim to be distributing. But then it's sequels I absolutely hated because of individual moments that rubbed me the wrong way.

I was interesting in the Bunny Game initially because it has a cool poster. Then I saw Dinner in America and loved it, so I was intrigued in how bad the Bunny Game could really be if it's Rehmeier directing.

I'll say I don't think the Bunny Game is without artistic merit. By all s, Rodleen Getsic was heavily involved with the creative side of the film and drew on personal experiences. I think it's fair to say this is her film but with Rehmeier called in to direct.

I didn't think it was disturbing, even if what we saw was really happening and that's supposed to be shocking. Frankly, from the moment she's kidnapped, it becomes boring. It's just an hour of torture and there's nothing really to be gained from watching it and it never really strives to be anything.

It's hopeless cinema and kudos to Getsic for making something different. Her "monsterpiece".

I'm at a funny point in my life where I feel like I'm close to understanding myself. And whereas on the one hand I feel good about that, on the other hand that realisation has given me a feeling of dread because if I do understand myself... I'm not sure what I'm moving towards anymore. I'm content and in being content, it doesn't feel like I have something specific to aim for. There are minor things, sure, but nothing like in my teens and 20s when I'm thinking about when I'll have a family or a career. I have a family now, and even if I'm still moving along the path, the career feels a given and we're secure and happy (for now).

So the realisation is, if I understand myself, this is probably who I am until the end, and the end is the only thing I'm moving towards. I guess all I can do is help and others, I guess this is the time to be selfless, because I think it's the only thing I have now.

All of these thoughts are the pretext for why I wanted to watch Waking Life again. I needed a film to make me think, and there are so many ideas about what life is being discussed in Waking Life, only to just stir the thought process without trying to profess any one way of living. The scene with the women talking about not being able to identify with themselves when they were babies resonates so much more now - a different person every 7 years. Maybe in another 7 years I'll have another epiphany and everything I'm saying now won't matter to me.

I mean, it's fine. The plot in this probably would have been better as an animated film.

There's an odd feeling in Brave New World. It just doesn't sit on certain beats long enough for them to matter.

The story is fine, but basic. If I was to take this film seriously, I'd probably say it trivialises political corruption, but there's no real point in trying to take it seriously. Why put in more effort than the creators.

I love the Leader as a character, I think he's a really cool villain and I think it's cool to finally get the pay off to the Incredible Hulk stinger, but the character is done dirty here. He doesn't feel very threatening, and the make-up and costume design are naff. The character deserved better.

Red Hulk was kinda cool. A bit cartoonish, but I enjoyed it.

Better than I it being. It helps that it has a better cast than Final Destination 4, P.J. Byrne has some laughs with his Always Sunny-esque awful character.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead delivers the best performance of any Final Destination film in this one. Single-handedly elevates the film.

I didn't know what to expect with Black Bag, and I'm pleased to have had a good time. It's the personal dramas of top level spy organisation employees - less James Bond, more Real Housewives of GCHQ.

It comes together in an incredibly satisfying way, and it has some solid performances.

Taking a step back, I usually wouldn't rate this film more than a 4 because it starts to feel rushed towards the end of the film - the rube goldberg deathtrap for Clear isn't very inspired, and the fakeouts for Alex feel silly if we know he isn't next in the order.

And in general, the deaths in this film feel tame compared to the rest of the franchise, with the exception of Ms. Lewton.

At this point though, the film is iconic and any shoddy writing can be overlooked in favour of the pure noughties nostalgia.

There are some trade-offs between the original Lilo & Stitch and the remake.

Folding Captain Gantu's character into Jumba removes any depth Jumba had. His character arc is butchered in the film.

The threat of social services and having to dance around them feels much more real in the remake, and it's an interesting and more grounded conflict to emphasise.

Otherwise, there are many similarities between the two. They tried to stay as faithful to the original film as they could and it shows. Lilo and Nani are well cast, Jumba and Pleakley... eh.

Stitch is still cute, and his character arc survives this adaptation.

I like the concept of a Mean Girls slasher, and Fear Street: Prom Queen does okay with it. But it could have been much better, it feels like wasted potential.

It's a bit basic. Feels more like a horror aimed at preteens rather than trying to be a more legitimate horror film. Which is fine, it makes sense if this is an R.L. Stine book series.

It plays homage to all the great horror, which is always nice, and it has a killer 80s soundtrack.

A little surprised at the low ratings for this. It's a gimmick horror film, but the gimmick is good. The thought of losing control of your body is terrifying, let alone in a situation where you're being hunted down.

Perfect final film for Tony Todd. His monologue is poignant, and I can't help but appreciate how this return to the franchise is a fitting finale for him. It reminds me of Vincent Price's final role in Edward Scissorhands. I'm thankful we could have these horror icons for as long as we did and they got to live a long life making the movies they loved.

I haven't watched a film in the cinema without the kids in a long time. I hated the experience. The film was excellent, but that's why I hated being in this darkened room on my own. I don't know what's happened to me, but I felt so much anxiety and kept having to physically shield myself from the screen. That's because the film does its job - it gave me characters I didn't want harm to come to, but I also knew that was never going to be the case given the film I bought a ticket for.

This franchise is the king of foreshadowing, both obvious and subtle. It uses sound, music, camera focus, and dynamic scene choreographing perfectly to build up tension. I genuinely just wanted to escape in those first 15 minutes. I'm never going up a tall building again.

It has a good humour in doses too. It's self-aware like every other franchise these days, but not obnoxiously so. This installment treads the line well.

It also expands the Final Destination lore in an interesting and coherent way, so there are writers behind this who are both competent and clearly fans of what's come before.

I may have hated the experience, but the film is great and I can't wait to watch it again in the comfort of my own home with my wife to protect me.

This was a joy to put together. It's difficult to not look at the diary and relate my movie watching to what else was going on in my life.

List starts with The Toxic Avenger in January 2016.

I moved to the Netherlands in August 2016 to start my BSc Mathematics in September, hence Hush being the only film I watched that month.

In July 2017 I met who would go on to be my wife, and in December 2017 we found out we were expecting children.

I moved back to the UK April 2018. The kids were born August 2018.

March 2019 I took my mother to the cinema to see Us for her birthday, and we had a great time. It's the first time in a long time that we'd been to the cinema together. That's a fond memory.

I hosted the Scavenger Hunt May 2020 while we were all stuck at home.

Between jobs throughout all of this. I finally graduated Jan 2021, around the same time I quit a job where I was being treated really badly.

Didn't get full-time work again until Nov 2021, before being promoted Feb 2023 and starting my MSc Mathematics in September.

This is the backdrop to all this movie watching.

The Scavenger Hunt is a Letterboxd community event which has been going strong for over ten years, ed by Wood for that time who has recently retired as the event's commissioner and handed the reigns over to me. This is the master list to collect all the Scavenger Hunts as they get published each month and to explain how you can take part.

RULES
What is a Scavenger Hunt?
Scavenger Hunts are a popular and fun challenge undertaken by Letterboxd s where the aim is for the participant to watch and review a film for every day within a month using prompts created by that month's host. For each prompt, the participant must find a film that matches.

How do I participate?
All you have to do is create your own list that fills the criteria in the host's prompts and post your list as a comment on the original hunt for that month. It is recommended that hosts add the participants to their list so everyone can explore what others have chosen for the prompts, and it's recommended to include a link to the original hunt in your list so anyone interested can easily find it and take part. It's also a good idea to add the prompts into the notes of each film in your list.

What other rules are there?
The majority of films you watch should have been previously unseen, discovering new films is part of the fun! You can't use one film for more than one task. You should also make it clear in each review that you watched the film as part of the Scavenger Hunt.

Anything else?
You can watch your chosen films in any order and you are allowed to change your list at any given time providing your choice meets the criteria. If you don't complete the hunt, it isn't the end of the world - even if you watched one new film that you loved and otherwise wouldn't have, then the hunt has been a success.

What else can I do?
These scavenger hunts are designed to be community-based challenges so please take the time to read, comment and like the lists and reviews of others. It makes the whole endeavour much more enjoyable if we all take the time to interact with one another. Also, be sure to tag each of your lists and reviews with the "scavenger hunt" and "scavenger hunt [number]" so others can find them with ease.

How can I host?
To be eligible hosting the next month's hunt, you need to have made a Scavenger Hunt list for the current month's hunt. If that's the case, you can enter the host raffle.

Do not enter if you cannot host. If you win and cannot host, you will not be permitted to enter future raffles.

You also cannot host if you have already hosted in the previous year.

Winners of the monthly raffle are chosen on the 15th. If the winner is on the discord server, the announcement will be made there. If the winner is not on discord, they will be ed through their current month's scavenger hunt list.

  1. Garbanzo Gas

    Titane

This is proper crackhead cinema, and I'm all here for it.

I have now learned about Vietnam Ron, and the man is a legend and he plays the cow in this film beautifully.

Garbanzo Gas is absolutely absurd - but my god if I wasn't hypnotised while watching it. And with next to zero budget, it's certainly creative.

All the original songs are perfect. "Burgers at the foodcourt, foodcourt" - absolute banger.

I was laughing uproariously quite often. Suddenly I need to see more films by Giuseppe Andrews. This film has changed my life for the better, and I like it on this trajectory.

  2. Tokyo Sonata

    JamieGalley

    Fantastic.

I'm a fan of American Beauty and without wanting to be reductive, Tokyo Sonata feels like a Japanese equivalent.

We start with what feels like a typical Japanese family with a conservative father who is concern about how he's received in his working life, a stay-at-home mother and two boys who are somewhat rebellious but not to any kind of extreme.

But as soon as the father loses his job, that downward spiral that it sends the entire family on is superb. With the father presented with his hypocrisy and this weird unfounded obsession with his authority getting in the way with common sense decisions, and boy who discovers and wants to pursue his (harmless) ion.

In particular, that night where every member of the family sent into a spin with none of them even aware that they are all absent from home is absolutely glorious.

And the sonata and the reaction to it is the icing on the cake. Phenomenal film.

  3. Good Morning

    c0l@ guy

I was apprehensive about watching anymore Ozu films because I didn't like Tokyo Story and struggled to understand it's acclaim. Thankfully, I loved this. It's such a simple film, but it's so sweet and endearing.

I can see some of the similarities with Tokyo Story, but why I think Good Morning worked for me is its beautiful colouring and its focus on child characters which really emphasises the basic innocence of the film.

The conflict doesn't amount to much more than small town talk and the intergenerational differences of children who want to watch TV and adults who worry that TVs turn people into dullards. But I was gripped - it was effective, it was sweet, it was relatable, it was nostalgic, it was funny, it was endearing.

Cinematography is gorgeous. It shows one of the grey brutalist buildings that looks terrible in real life, but somehow this film makes even that look stunning.

  4. Field of Dreams

    AOL

I do not care even remotely about baseball, so it's a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed Field of Dreams as much as I did.

Is this heaven? No, this is Iowa.

Every aspect of the film is dreamy. From the plot which relies on some non-sensical goings-on with Costner having to just be guided by a cryptic voice that says one sentence at a time and his feelings for what that sentence means, to the cinematography with uses a lot of twilight to make those shots really beautiful, to a score that I really loved and think set the mood for the film well.

This felt like a bunch of characters discovering their heaven and to that end, it felt like a film about much more than baseball - and another film eschewing what the most economical decision would be in favour of the decision that helped you rediscover some of the magic you feel experiencing the world as a child. I don't care about baseball, but the feeling it creates gives me that sense of nostalgia too and I fully get it.

I'd go so far as to say the film didn't really need the conflict about the financial stability of the farm and the shitty uncle trying to make them sell - it could have focused entirely on that magical feeling and might have been better for it.

  5. Red Rooms

    Lmndgrrl

An incredible uncomfortable protagonist to follow, and this weird obsession with this trial is disturbing. Some models are just weird irl, true fact.

Speaks to the weird addictive intrigue with get from voyeurism that distracts from living a healthy life.

That school uniform scene was nuts, but executed so well.

Great performances. I loved Clem as a character - how much she made me cringe, and how bad I felt for her. Technically, she wasn't wrong when she was trying to defend the plaintiff but my god, read the room and also the hurt you cause.

  6. Ikarie XB 1

    Claggart

Before I started the binge, I thought this was going to be my favourite.

I love those philosophical space movies and I tend to give good ratings to Czech cinema. Whereas it didn't quite reach the moon of my expectations, it still landed among the stars - which was always a bit of an odd saying because stars are further away, but regardless...

Ikarie XB 1 is much campier than I was expecting. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised, given the year of release, it must have drawn a lot of inspiration from Star Trek with the aim of doing something a bit more "down to Earth" with the concept. If this had been made post-Space Odyssey, this would have been a masterpiece - but then again, if this was released post-Space Odyssey, this would have just been Solaris and that film already exists.

That's to say it has its own identity, which is for the better. It's campy in the beginning, and with its set design and costumes, but very much philosophical in of its plot and its execution. I now realise that Sunshine must have borrowed a lot from this film, with one of its major plot points being this abandoned special and resolving the mystery of what happened to the crew, with that mystery also posing and existential threat to the film's characters.

From the halfway point, the campy atmosphere changes to start to feel bleak and hopeless. Claustrophobic amid the enveloping emptiness of space.

Great film, I really enjoyed it.

  7. Oslo, August 31st

    Lir

A film that starts hopeful, but gets sadder as it moves along. And I guess this is the importance of allowing someone the room to change and better themselves.

As a recovering addict, Anders appears to be written off by those in his life who seem to already define him by his previous problematic behaviours. The film follows him trying to struggle against it, until it all becomes too much and leads to a sad but effective ending that mirrors the opening scene both thematically and literally.

The cafe bucket list in this is solid. Need to use that to review my own.

A slow conversational film. I adored it. Great nuanced performance from Anders Danielsen Lee.

  8. Land of Mine

    Tel

I had never heard of Land of Mine. I thought it was great.

The conflict is obvious - immediately post-war and the Danes want to punish German soldiers left in their country. A sentiment that is easy to empathise with but much harder to justify when those soldiers are just kids.

Off the bat, the film makes a point of showing how much Sgt. Rasmussen hates the Germans but having him brutalise a random soldiers. As he's given charge of a group of German soliders who aren't even 18 yet, we see him having to adapt.

Given the film is about clearing land mines from a beach, there's obviously some rough emotional moments in the film. At times feeling hopeless, but that's what makes the film work and Sgt. Rasmussen is a great character and role model.

  9. F for Fake

    G M

So I'll be honest, I've always found copyright laws a bit weird. I get it, if you want to make a living off what you can create artistically, or what you can invent if we're talking about patents, but my view is that it takes the purpose of the endeavor away from artistic expression or communal benefit respectively to the recognition that comes to having your name attached to some innovation.

I know the argument for why these laws foster innovation, but I don't necessarily agree that the extent to which it helps with innovation outweighs how much they hold back people who try to break into a certain market.

I think I've muddled myself a bit discussing art and economics as though they're the same, but I think there are parallels and we can see that in F for Fake as Elmyr clearly had the craft necessary to be a successful artist, but instead of creating anything new, he painted copies of famous art and shipped them as though they were originals, and at some stage the art industry became complicit in the deception because they don't care if it's an original, they care about the money.

Only just occurred to me but I when NFTs become a thing, it was described as a digital version of storing your money in art in the same way that cryptocurreny acts as a digital version of real world money. Cryptobros got mad when they owned an NFT but people could do what they want the image anyway because owning the NFT meant fuck all.

I think it's the same with Elmyr. It takes a lot of legitimate skill, but what does it matter if you own an original Matisse if someone can recreate the Matisse to the extent that experts can't distinguish them?

Incredibly interesting documentary that talks about authorship presenting in a very theatrical way by Welles. Those final 20 minutes with Welles and Oja Kodar are incredible, Welles is such a troll - the dialogue is delivered so well, and it's filmed in such a dreamy fashion. Wonderful.

  10. This Magnificent Cake!

    Pikachu
