Congrats to Eugene! Very funny movie, Perhaps his best in a lot of ways. I miss his acting (he kills me every time I see him on screen) but this movie has much of the formal maturity and vision of Spree, with all of the HEART (and then some) of his earlier films, back to his romantic comedy roots.

Always amazing to see either Vish or Ivy, perhaps my favorite actors after Eugene himself.

Peter and Dasha are good, the best moments are when they're having fun and saying things they'd actually say in real life. At times, Eug's script jams an overwrought line or two into their mouths and they can only do so much, teehee.

What struck me most about the film was how pornographic it was. At times showing CGI sex acts and "OnlyFans" screen recordings directly (it wouldn't be a Kotlyarenko production without recordings of phone screens, and this film has no shortage), other times gesturing at JOIs, etc, etc. The hidden cameras evoke voyeurism, obviously, but the way the two leads were acting, often evoked the tense faux sensuality of porno. It was interesting. Definitely a deep familiarity with porno amongst the cast and crew. But despite all this, the references to raunch and hints of horniness, Eugene subverts it a bit by edging us until the very end, nobody's effing in the first 90% of this movie, even if they want to. Still wouldn't want to watch it next to my mother.

Final sequence with the tense music and scavenger hunt was rewarding. Clever, and heartfelt.

Five stars for my friends.

Movie about the most handsome guy ever using PUA tactics to seduce MILFS into giving him squatter's rights in their hollywood hills mansions. But then he falls for an impoverished smokeshow con artist (narcissistic af, "she's the girl version of me, bro") but then she chooses a rich Jewish guy over him.

Glad I didn't see this as a 12 year old, I was very intrigued by it at the time because Ashton was the most followed guy on Twitter at the time. Pretty vulgar movie, filled with PUA factoids and schemes that would have really resonated with tween me. Lots of nudity and locker room talk.

Pretty dope movie about how actors behave. Had some great laughs, more serious than I thought it would be based on how people talk about it. I thought it would be all silly. But I liked it. Even though it does the classic romantic comedy thing where a woman is mad at a guy for telling a well meaning fib (betrayal!), and then forgives him right at the end.

A hipster masterpiece. Makes me take back so much of what I've said about Mr. Lynch over the years.

In so much of what I've seen from him, he's hostile to the audience, pissing on us with his solipsistic symbolism that it's hard to believe even HE understood the meaning of. But in this, he delivers the goods, at every turn. A coherent work of art. Suspense, twists and turns, laughs, romance, wall to wall great music.

It's just a movie, a great movie that follows Save The Cat to a T about how weird stuff happens. But in this, the characters who see the weird stuff happening are disturbed by it, outwardly. Their reactions resemble how a real guy would react. Compared to the worthless Eraserhead (although after watching this it feels wrong for me to say that), you actually care about the characters here because there's some sensible grounding. It's the full realization of Lynch's vision. Now I get it.

A great mystery, paranoia and intrigue and conspiracy reminiscent of Pynchon and Polanski (Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown style). But it's also about good and evil and cheating and desire and how sometimes weird and creepy stuff happens. Great acting, looked good in the theater. Takes you on a ride.

Undeniable film. He controlled himself and made something great.

Pretty wholesome actually (nobody really cheats from what I could tell). You should let your kids watch this when they're like 9 or 10. Great slapstick with banging dialogue and lots of making fun of blue collar types for being stupid and not knowing words. The wise cracks don't let up—makes you wonder if Woody was watching Married With Children in the 90s. Lots of Peg and Al in the relationship between Woody and Tracey.

Loved this in the theater but have cooled on it a teeny bit after a day of reflecting. It's Freudian for sure. There's a ton of nudity and banging that didn't really bother me.

Nothing bothered me, actually, it's great. It keeps you gripped, you buy the ridiculous Brooklyn accent the girl's doing. For me as a Russophile there was a lot of great stuff, South Brooklyn stuff, t.A.T.u., etc, etc, etc, etc.

The events are pretty predictable, I didn't feel shocked or subverted really, throughout, but the plot was handled with great humor and sensitivity, and Mikey M demonstrates great range, a great acting performance.

There's a big scene where she's fighting, kicking and screaming at a couple of Russian guys. This had the potential, the length, the long takes, to be similar to when they have to grab Mabel and take her to the crazy broad treatment center in A Woman Under The Influence, but here it's played with comic violence that kinda breaks up the heartbreak of what you're about to see. I couldn't help but think of The Sweet East, whose protagonist slips in and out of episodic danger with great guile, and ends up where she started having gone on a beautiful adventure.

This is the opposite, about a "sex" "worker," Ani (Anora), who (while sharing certain ive qualities with the that are maybe inevitable with a middle aged man writing a movie about a young woman) doesn't flow from man to man unscathed, but is totally broken by her experience with a single Russian twenty-one year old. It's very Freudian, the boy's parents control his every move like a puppet and he loves sex and weed, he's young... polymorphously perverse. It's compelling if a bit predictable when the oligarch parents demand he divorce Ani after they marry in Vegas, bringing great shame upon the family.

Ivy Wolk steals a scene and a half, had me laughing. She's great. The movie is fun, keeps you gripped.

The ending hit me like a million bucks. I had tears in my eyes. It's really great, brilliante even.

This is about as good as a movie could be. Stunning and heartbreaking in its execution. A lot of people will dismiss it, for being not only a comic book movie, but also a musical, but they don't have chaos and romance in their hearts.

The first Joker movie managed to transcend comic book banality with its combination of comedic subversion (Phillips is a talented wrier / director, and has a keen sense for inserting humor when it's least expected), and its incredible acting, leaning on Phoenix to deliver during these long takes, long scenes full of awkward, cringe interactions with normal people, often cliched (he was abused! he got fired! he got attacked, had a bad day, etc, etc), but the acting manages to overcome and delete any hint of triteness. He's just too good.

Joker 2 dials this up a notch and brings Lady Gaga on board, and the two of them have undeniable chemistry. It's instantly electric. She lies, breaks his heart, tears it up, but brings MUSIC into his life. It's gorgeous, I wept repeatedly in the theater. It shows how even when the entire world is laughing at you, when you're about to get the death penalty, the love of a mentally ill blonde woman who believes in you can make you feel alive again. It's so so beautiful. It's really incredible. It's like Punch Drunk Love about how sometimes you're so weird and Jewish you get a British girlfriend. This is kinda like that. So great.

Freudian levels off the charts. Human pain levels off the charts. She looks great, a striking big nose, never really paid attention to it before, but she completely won me over. The sickening feeling you get watching this movie is like nothing else I've seen. Completely heartbreaking movie to see on screen. For as much as Joker 1 was a movie about an incel triumph, Joker 2 is a movie about how the love of a woman can drive you to darker places than ever before. It's almost perfect. Looking forward to seeing this 3-4 more times and updating my review. I feel sick, Patrick. I love it to death.

Basically works to show how wacky and kooky the antiracism industry is. Not a killshot or rigorous philosophical defense of conservatism (who would want that?), but a well made piece of propaganda that says we should treat people kindly regardless of their skin color. Not good at all. Basically worse than Barbie, but worth engaging with because it is an attempt at something original. Totally different from the MARVEL formula for what a $100 million movie should look like. Unfortunately, it has one of the worst scripts ever. There simply isn't a story. Say what you want about the Marvel movies, they have 900 producers, writers, and test screeners ensuring the scripts at least make sense, have a hero and a villain, a false hope, a tidy final act, etc, etc, etc, etc. The Marvel movies (and the many many clones that have dominated the box office in the past 15 years) are soulless but essentially never outright disasters.

This is something risky, it's interesting its Rotten Tomatoes score sits in the mid 50s, because now every movie either gets like 99 or 22 on there.

But the problem with this movie is, it just sucks, it makes no sense, isn't good. It feels like a thin allegory for political events and figures that haven't actually happened yet. From my seat in the theater, it felt impossible trying to discern what the message could possibly be, who the good guy is, who the bad guy is, what the plot of the movie actually is. So it's utterly muddled morally, just makes no sense, and beyond that, is pretty soulless (full of tacky CGI and creepy sci fi tropes). I felt nothing. I would be fine with morally ambiguous characters and lack of plot if the script used this to try to articulate something about human pain and complication, but it didn't. Or at least it didn't succeed. I never felt anything. Even in the terrible Dracula movie, I was often moved and on the edge of my seat, that thing had a plot and characters I cared about.

The acting is weird. Aubrey Plaza steals every scene in this with her campy over-acting, it's actually pretty funny. Giancarlo Esposito occasionally breaks into jive talk which is jarring but funny. There are a lot of funny moments in here for sure, but I'm not sure what they're in service of. Movie makes no sense. It's not as offensive or enraging as the bad Barbie movie, but it's just a disaster, and not good. Certain contrarians will pretend it's good and I respect the trolling. There are also gonna be baseball hat / DSA guys acting like it's genius (there were a bunch in my theater laughing loudly) but it's not. It's just a bad movie by a guy who's not that smart.

A delight, such a pleasure to see in the theater surrounded by lifelong ers of Mr. Allen.

It's a wonderful picture, the outfits look great, the woman looks great, the music is great. Just a fun little Woody, his best since Cafe Society.

The French certainly manages to mask some spotty acting and cringe dialogue, but my eyes were glued to this thing. It's a great story about how sometimes you have to cheat on your husband because he has a job and isn't an unemployed shy/adorable Woody coded novelist.

It's cute, it's fun. Better than Match Point I think. Gives Manhattan Murder Mystery mixed with a few other classics.

The woman was cheating on her first and real husband with two different guys, it's nuts. Leave your Trad Cath values at the door and kiss the mezuzah before you sit down for this beautiful movie. I hope Woody gets to make 10 more.

Freudian movie about how sometimes you just gotta talk it out. This is one of those movies that feels like it was adapted from a play, and I looked it up, and it was.

Knightley is unsettling and flinchy, doing a terrible Russian accent. Despite being a timeless beauty, she is somehow lacking any sultriness whatsoever in her role as a Jewess with an addiction to beating off and getting spanked.

Freud comes off as so dope and so chadded that you wonder how anyone can see this movie and not be running to the nearest couch to lie down and talk about mommy and daddy.

Jung, in my estimation, comes off as a total Aryan creep, cheats on his wife and plays with Tarot cards and thinks he's doing science. What he did to Freud was wrong, and so are his creepy ideas about people being motivated by things other than sex.

Possibly the most Freudian film of the 2020s, maybe even the entire 21st century. It's undeniable, in a lot of ways, but deeply disturbing in others. At times feels like a marvel movie for marxists.

We're treated to Stone's journey from polymorphously perverse baby brained retard, to a full fledged cold and conniving woman. There’s something cruel about this movie.

After cucking her moslem fiancee (well, their plans to marry were sort of meek and tentative anyway, so who's to say she didn't have the right?) and running off with the monstrously creepy Ruffalo, she proceeds to make Mark's life a living hell, throwing away all his money, becoming a whore, and then a socialist. That’s not to say she doesn’t let him blow her back out a few times first though.

It's supposed to be funny to see Ruffalo in agony, being cucked so hard by this woman, but why exactly is it funny? I'll it it sort of is, and he's established as a totally unsympathetic charlatan, which is part of the humour. But what troubles me is that the filmmakers seem to treat your love becoming a whore right in your face, not as a sort of opportunity for black-comedy, the way a gruesome death or a 9/11 joke might make someone naughtily snicker at the bleakness and absurdity of life, but rather, as a sort of doling out of justice, and funny in its being a sort of karmic "happy ending," which I think is misguided. Do the men who wrote this movie really think it's epic and funny for men to be humiliated by women? To have one's nuts so squeezed by the proverbial vicegrip that he has to be institutionalized?

Stone is whipping everything out in this movie, T, A, bush, you name it, Mr Skin is going to have a field day. The sex is sort of over the top, and left me with an anxious, doomed, sinking feeling.

The steampunk midjourney aesthetic sort of works for this movie, I felt. Yorgos definitely had a vision, and the dreamy and fantastical vibe is undeniable, and the costumes were great, maybe because they were a reprieve from all the icky nudity this thing had to offer.

The movie ain't half bad, but it's not great. I imagine the DSA crowd on letterboxd really likes this thing for being pro abortion and coomed out. I'm sure there are a lot of college students who are calling this their "favorite movie," but really, it's just the last serious movie they've seen.

It's Complicated 6y3t73 2009 - ★★ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/matthewdavi/film/its-complicated/ letterboxd-review-520751844 Fri, 26 Jan 2024 09:59:23 +1300 2024-01-07 No It's Complicated 2009 2.0 22897 <![CDATA[

Very interesting movie that could sort of only come from the mind of a middle aged Jewess. Full of the sort of insecurity and resentment someone like Meyers, who got divorced in 1999, could concoct.

I'm going to spend some time summarizing the film in service of a greater moral point now.

Ten years post divorce, Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep reunite at a hotel bar in New York and begin boinking. You with me so far?

Only problem? Alec Baldwin is now married ("married") to the scarcely shown but reliably buxom Lake Bell, the same skank whom he cheated on Streep with ten years prior.

For this, Baldwin is portrayed as a monster, a cheater twice over! Despite Meryl's many protests ("this is wrong!" "we can't keep doing this!"), Alec, embodying an archetypal dissembling devil, offers back ("Oh, but it felt so right!" "Don't tell me you didn't enjoy it as much as I did!" "Your big fat saggy menopausal tushy is just delightful!").

And of course, being perhaps the greatest living actor, he delivers everything Meyers throws at him with cool charismatic ease.

Some comedies of errors ensue, and the audience is supposed to root for Steve Martin, the nice nebbish architect, to start piping down Streep, and get her (and Baldwin) out of their alleged adultery.

But here, is where I posit the fundamental FLAW in the film, and where it really is NOT complicated, in of Catholic morality.

According to Jesus in Matthew 19:6 (and a number of places, basically in all four gospels), you can never get divorced. Marriage vows affirm, "till DEATH do us part," not, "till a quickie with Lake Bell do us part."

So for the entirety of this film, Streep and Baldwin are still married. And in fact, all the tense scenes of their clandestine lovemaking are the only times in the movie when Alec Baldwin ISN'T cheating. The real affair is with the "wife" he goes home to each day.

As a Baldwin fan and a traditional Catholic, I couldn't help but root for their reconciliation, but alas, the hard-hearted Meyers can't give it to us, and instead punishes Baldwin by taking away both his wife and his "wife," leaving us on a sort of hopeful note that Streep and Martin might end up together, even though he is rightfully creeped out when he discovers that she and Baldwin had resumed seeing one another. (He too, is divorced, and should just go back to his real wife).

Overall, the acting performances and moral questions make it a stronger picture than her other film The Holiday, which I reviewed last month, even if ultimately it is just a movie that has a confused worldview, and is rarely ever funny. Baldwin is electric as always and carries the film through it's generous 120 minute runtime. While watching this I wondered, are there any films of this genre from this era that are actually good? Or are they all basically terrible, valuable only for Bush-era nostalgia? I'm going to keep investigating.

So in short, once you wrap your head around the Gospel, it's not really complicated. It's simple actually. Don't get divorced.

Freud's Last Session 6c1q2e 2023 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/matthewdavi/film/freuds-last-session/ letterboxd-review-503281932 Fri, 5 Jan 2024 03:00:33 +1300 2024-01-03 No Freud's Last Session 2023 1025491 <![CDATA[

Freudian and fantastic. Did not disappoint. This thing was dope asl. I could watch these two guys debate all day. Hopkins was wheezing and spitting and bleeding all over the place in what was certainly the best performance of his career. Sigmund's sapphic dyke daughter was acting her heart out too, clinging to daddy for dear life. CS Lewis came off as a weaselly Anglican heretic who's full of fear, getting chadded by the Viennese Joo at every turn, but still managed to get a couple of blows in on the good doctor.

This movie is getting mixed, sort of negative reviews, perhaps because there's a certain self serious melodramatic quality to it, but I mean, grow up, loser. The idea of these two having a meeting just days before Freud blew his brains out and just days after Hitler invaded Poland is just epic, this is simply an epic moment in human history, an imagined socratic dialogue between a top Christian apologist and the most influential atheist Jew of all time. Just an epic meeting of the minds, reminiscent of when I found the painting of Pope Leo the Great meeting Attila the Hun.

I was soyfacing nonstop, every shoehorned reference to castration anxiety, the oral stage, the problem of evil felt tailored just to me. Don't even worry that you're going into this movie basically knowing exactly what each guy thinks, just sit back and enjoy these two guys pretending to be two famous guys from 80 years ago.

Compare this movie to another dialogue heavy biopic that hipsters adore, "The End of The Tour," about a jewish journalist going to Minnesota with David Foster Wallace. This one is way better, way more epic, way more interesting, real tension between two great minds, real tension in the world at the time.

I really could've watched 3 hours of this, but maybe that's just me.

The Holiday 6i5363 2006 - ★ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/matthewdavi/film/the-holiday/ letterboxd-review-503271768 Fri, 5 Jan 2024 02:41:28 +1300 2023-12-29 No The Holiday 2006 1.0 1581 <![CDATA[

Movie was utterly gutless. Jack Black tries his best to be a charming romantic comedy nice-guy, but it comes off as creepy and unsettling. Cameron Diaz is similarly uncanny in her role as an overworked film editor who visits England and does a little accidental sex tourism with the effortlessly charming Jude Law. The Brits in this one, really crush it, as Kate Winslet—playing Jude's femcel sister—is utterly magnetic (but perhaps I'm just an anglophile).

No one is buying Cameron Diaz as a woman with a job, sorry! Nor is she convincing when talking about her hatred of cheating and cheaters. We all know this Blonde cuban bombshell loves to cheat.

Which brings me to the real point about this movie, and the reason why it's a load of booty cheeks, the utter gutlessness. None of our four main characters pictured in the poster ever act unethically, subversively, selfishly, etc, etc, etc, etc. They're always being cheated on, helping old men with dementia accept awards for being Jewish, being cheated on, being single fathers, blah blah blah.

The movie, being predictable at every turn, has 0 guts whatsoever. But still, I have a fondness for this era of romantic comedy, and even at 2 hours and 15 minutes, it went down smooth and held my attention even late into the night, they absolutely do not make them like this anymore. Back when a movie could get a clean 50% rotten tomatoes with an all white cast. There's also nothing funny about this thing, at least not intentionally funny. The creepy acting from the Americans provides a decent dose of accidental humour.

Looking forward to watching It's Complicated soon from the same director.

Jungian movie about how sometimes women can go all over da place. Looks fantastic, very funny.

I think a lot of dumb people might accidentally interpret this as a "right wing" film because it dips its toe into satire repeatedly, and because there's no Barbie-style scolding, or no overt Tarantino-style sadistic punishment of certain "hateful" characters, and because our heroine repeatedly drops the r slur,

But that would be missing the point entirely. Sometimes a movie is about adventure, about funny stuff that happens, about how men can drag women all over but women are clever too, can often outwit and outsmart men with their charms etc etc.

Entertaining but ultimately a weird and creepy movie that looks like dog bull. Kinda exposes FFC as a fraud to me. But it's true that sometimes your wife falls under the spell of an evil Romanian guy and you have to use Catholicism to save her. Van Helsing was fantastic. Incredible guy who moves the engine of this story forward single handedly in the final few acts.

Freudian movie about how women can be monsters. There's definitely a story here. Some funny moments. It's confusing often, the timelines and convoluted family stuff takes you a minute to settle into. There's this attempt at I guess... dark humour by playing this dramatic piano music over and over. Movie felt like it was missing something. Portman is fantastic though.
