Someone fardded in the aerobridge

Pornographic as hell with a scorchingly hot performance from Thandiwe Newton and a highly charged setup for the dynamic between the three leads (I was really expecting there to be a threesome involving several face/mask reveals but John Woo’s cowardice prohibited this potentially earth-shattering ménage à trois).
Richard Roxburgh’s South African accent is diabolical (his character could’ve just been Australian??), Anthony Hopkins is there and I’m not sure why, and Ving Rhames is once again a highlight, playing off John…
“I was just feeling alone.”
Even better on rewatch. Chilling, gut-wrenching, real horror. I think I took for granted just how well this is directed, written, acted, lit, scored, shot — there’s mastery of almost every component. What a blistering start to the brothers’ career in feature films. To say I’m excited for Bring Her Back is an understatement.
Mission: Impossible for me to work out what was going on
Felt so dumb watching this. Like I know it’s convoluted but I was completely lost. I was even reading the Wikipedia plot summary at different points and I was still really confused. Some nice moments of directorial flair from De Palma (the opening act is particularly strong), and Tom Cruise holds his own, but I’m (again) confused how they kicked on to create the M:I juggernaut from this lean but messy first movie.
Also, did Max and Ethan pretty much fuck each other with their eyes? More of that, please.
