Open City Mixtape

2014

★★★★ Watched

A lot of searing, visceral, beauty in these small moments that could be talked about in several ways for several hours. I found myself thinking about something entirely different, though, revisiting these shorts years after seeing them. 2014 now feels like maybe the last time short films didn’t have to look stunning and be glossy and A24 art-house to be successful. Whatever we call independent and underground filmmaking now feels miles away from Open City, which is gleeful in its cinematic independence.

Re-watched showing to my intro film class and kinda forgot how wonderfully insane it is. Also that maybe it’s too wonderfully insane for an intro class?

The world would be a better place if this, not Pulp Fiction, was considered by the public at large as the English-language GOAT masterpiece of the 90s

The rarest of films, a comedy that has brilliant visual design with cared-for semiotics and also a serious arthouse film that never revels in trauma to find conflict. For as hyper specific (and even aloof) the tone is, it is above all deeply human.

Haynes’s best film since Far From Heaven and easily the best film of the year.
