After years of not having seen it, my housemates and I cosied in on the comedown from Mardi Gras weekend and watched this together.
I suppose I forgot, or maybe didn’t quite understand, how monumental this film is

Howling at the first shot of the silver stiletto and
billowing fabric to match cascading over the red dirt. That’s Australia!!! And I am crying!

I am also crying when Mitzi realises the kind of kid Benj is
Yes, the representation wasn’t authentic but I don’t think it takes away from the fact that this was made in 1994 and what it has done for queer culture in Australia, and the world.
Also, it’s still funny as fuck.
