Now if this isn't the cutest Disney movie I've seen so far, I don't know. As if 99 puppies and two Dalmatians weren't already cute, the rest of the animals in this film assisting them are also incredibly cute and charming.

For me, this is the very zenith of everything 'Western'.
It feels like everything before it, every film and dime store novel and short story and play about this world, has been leading up to it, and everything that came after has some of its DNA in it. I'm not saying I don't also love tons of other stories that take place within these conventions, but the simplicity and at the same time, variety in every single character is monumentally…

So, this movie has issues. Numerous ones. I'm not really following how it's as acclaimed as it is, considering that. It's certainly technically well done and creative. But it's also a weird tonal mishmash, the pacing is pretty awful in places, and it doesn't even have a protagonist? Let's start at that.

So, I find this movie fascinating.

Nicolas Cage has recently come out and said that him and the director were fully aware of how weird and funny it is, and that it's an absurdist comedy (a stealthy one, if so). I could believe that, and I could almost just as easily believe that it's an unintentionally bad and funny horror remake (a loose one).

The thing is, if it's the former, I would give it a 6/10 for the effort…
