For me, this is the very zenith of everything 'Western'.
It feels like everything before it, every film and dime store novel and short story and play about this world, has been leading up to it, and everything that came after has some of its DNA in it. I'm not saying I don't also love tons of other stories that take place within these conventions, but the simplicity and at the same time, variety in every single character is monumentally effective to me. About 80 minutes when you get down to it, basically in real time, not a single moment wasted, and everything is effective.
Gary Cooper, a character who feels like a man, a person, but also like he's giving a face to every silhouette'd hero in every western story. Grace Kelly, fantastic in her unique role. Katy Jurado, absolutely stunning and memorable. Lon Chaney in basically one scene, but exactly on point. But I like I said, every part is spot on.
Lee Van Cleef and Jack Elam are even in this, and even though their roles are minimalistic, and it seems kind of exemplary of how essential this work of art is, like a stamp of approval of film history, in a way. As essential as The 39 Steps is for thrillers, or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari for psychological horror. I'm grateful for every part of it.

This review may contain spoilers.

This started off quite strong and atmospheric, and whilst it remained so the entire time, and is really gorgeous to look at, the story kind of kept getting less interesting as more details kept getting revealed and kind of fizzled out in a way that felt ambiguous, but not in a very good way? Or, as well as it deserved, maybe. So while the movie had a lot of promise and I really enjoyed myself up to a point, it sadly felt like there was something missing, or maybe too much information. Or maybe the clever usage of familiar themes just got less clever as I learned more, especially in the second half. It also feels like it became more complicated than it needed to. Like reading a story that promises and hints at shocking revelations, but you end up being not *as* shocked, ultimately.
Still, quite good and interesting, but not as a great as I felt it could've turned out to be.
Satanism is obviously always fun, and the performances were great all around, there was this atmosphere of dread that also worked well in The Blackcoat's Daughter, so there's a lot to like and I could very much imagine seeing it again, and enjoying it a bit more, knowing its contents.

I find it interesting that this animation based on a horror game with 16-bit aesthetics (due to being made in RPG Maker) has terrible, unsightly CG animation.
Also, even though I find the concept intriguing, it doesn't seem like there's enough of a budget or interest or talent for anyone to adapt it into something approaching an interesting film. The only thing about this that wasn't kind of boring and forgettable was the ending song, unfortunately.
And aside from its tedious nature, it also introduces very odd story elements that add nothing except more confusion.

As usual, another horror anthology, another mixed bag.
Anthologies are meant to be mixed bags in of stories. Weirdly enough, more often than not, I find them to be of wildly varying quality though, as well! This one is no different. Though, what I have to give Cat's Eye right away is that it's at least not uneven; the worst story is the first (not including the framing device), and the best one is the last.
- First off, framing story: there's a cat who seems to be a bit more intelligent and aware than your usual cat. He runs around (getting chased by Cujo and almost run over by Christine) and I guess encounters the people in the other stories. That's it.
- Then, Quitters Inc. Anything negative I can say about the film is contained therein. James Woods in and of itself, eh, he's an ok actor, but this is a story I just find irritating. It's not particularly scary to begin with, and the way it's told is so completely hokey and implausible that it just feels like a complete waste. The social commentary is utterly transparent and you can tell what it was TRYING to say, but what ends up on the page is one of the silliest things King has ever written. And this episode in this film is on par with the worst episodes of Hammer House of Horror, if not worse.
- Second story, The Ledge. I actually read this one in a compilation of horror short stories as a kid. It feels like the polar opposite of the one preceding it: it's realistic enough to be just believable, it's tense, I like all of the performances, and the twists are translated to the screen very well. It almost feels like it could be a sort of urban legend. Genuinely fun stuff. Shame they couldn't find one of similar caliber to start the film out with. Also, Mike Star and Baron Harkonnen as a villain duo are great and I'm really happy that this combo exists on film.
- Third, The General. Contrary to the first two, the only clearly paranormal one, and in my opinion the best executed. Also has a bit of an urban legend touch, but more something you could picture in a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book, if it was a bit shorter and simpler. But that's not to its detriment. Genuinely likeable characters (our satellite protagonist included), three fun actors including young Drew Barrymore, and a little monster! Having a little scary puppet guy really props this one up as a legit 80s horror film, and it feels like most of the genuine budget went here, and it's overall a really satisfying story that also concludes the film well, and I won't spoil anything here.

So, in conclusion, even if I'd prefer to skip the first proper story entirely because it just sucks, it's still one of the better anthology movies if you look at it just by the quality of the other content. It certainly fulfilled what made me curious in it to begin with; being a horror movie involving a cat. And I could even think of a much better Stephen King short story with a cat that might've fit here, but that one would only show up a few years later in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie. Lewis Teague's direction in this here was fine and inspired enough (even in the shitty story) to make it work. Overall, still leaves a mostly positive impression.

Well, this was about as sweet as I expected, or hoped it to be. It's very Nora Ephron, more Ephron than I ever Ephron'd, and what I appreciate is that it doesn't have the corniness some of her older works have? It feels a little more honest and a little less hoakey/Hollywood, maybe that was a result of executive interference in some of her other films, I don't know.
I've read opinions on this that in this dual, partial biography (in a way), Julia Child's story is much more appealing than Julie's, to many people, and I can't agree with it. It's certainly interesting to learn about this figure, but in of a movie narrative, both stories contrast each other well, and I think we got just enough of either to make it work. Meryl Streep is awesome as Julia Child and I think Amy Adams deserves just as much credit for playing a role that is not necessarily this 'larger than life' known figure, but for making her story just as compelling. I'm not sure I would've watched this or enjoyed it as much if it hadn't been for those wonderful actresses.
Also, both of them have great chemistry with the actors playing their respective partners, Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina. For me, this whole combo worked very well, and it's just interesting to think that it's basically a chain of cookbooks and biographies that then created this really sweet and appealing blend, all together.

Rest in peace, Julie Powell and Julia Child. Thank you for your stories.

I don't really now know what frame of mind I was in when I first saw this about 4 years ago, but I thought it was just solid and couldn't a lot of things? But after consideration and this rewatch, I'd actually say that this is the sequel that really captures the tone and excitement of the original, and is actually pretty damn good.
The chemistry of the team is great, the pacing works really well (aside from the sandstorm sequence going on just a little too long), and side characters and antagonists are fun, and the emotional beats also hit right. And, like I said, even though I knew what was going to happen, it is actually very thrilling. Maybe I just had trouble getting invested for some reason, the first time. But I actually really like this, after ing it as just 'okay'.
II was just straight up boring and also a weird James Bond-ian love triangle story that would work better as a sleeping aid. III was a good start to get back on track of the tone that the first movie set, and this one really solidifies everything that works about it. I know when something works when I know the twists and it still makes me think that they're neat. And again, knowing that Paula Patton wasn't in the next installments is sad because I really thought her character was awesome, and maybe Kurt Hendricks could've used a tad more characterization, but as is, this is just straight up quality any way you put it.

So, this was Mamoru Oshii's first original project, and it looked quite interesting (and obviously artsy), which is I why I wanted to wtach it. I don't know that it was a collaboration with the artist Yoshitaka Amano though, whom I know best by his works on the character designs for the Final Fantasy game series, which makes a lot of sense. Aside from looking kind of sleepy and bored, both characters in this film do bear a resemblance to those character designs.
Anyway, this story was obviously highly allegorical and kind of dream-like, I didn't think much about it while it was going on, but it does have memorable imagery, good (minimal) editing and a powerful score. I can't really say that I got much out of the narrative, which is about what I expected, but it's still interesting and worth watching, quite beautiful and clearly a ion project filled with many ideas.

This movie is very competent. It's well made. I get what it's doing. It's providing interesting backstory to what we already experienced. But I just don't think it's nearly as captivating. And ultimately, it just kind of adds to what Fury Road built, and just feels like a very well executed offshoot? Which, you know, it is, but it doesn't become *more* or as good or big on its own (even though the story it tells is a bit more epic, and also makes Fury Road and its world details feel more epic). Was it trying to be more? Furiosa is certainly an interesting character and this story was neat. Weirdly enough, as a prequel, it managed to be a really good sequel, since it expanded so much on what came before. This usually doesn't happen. Prequels tend to stem from a place of a fundamental lack of creativity. This, however, like the prequel elements in say, The Godfather II, manages to give more depth to an existing story. It really makes me think, obviously even a prequel is always a continuation, but even though this story happened first in-universe, would it make sense to experience it first?
Interestingly enough, its story was conceived during the making of Fury Road, and they were originally intended to be shot back to back. Also, at some point it could've become an anime? So, even though there's not much new or unique here (an incredibly strong willed person plots revenge for many years? Count of Monte Cristo? Even older stories?), well made action and all that, its creators intended it to be told, more or less as much as Fury Road (which itself was a great extension to a series which had been dormant).
Every other movie in the series though had kind of its own era or phase of this world, though, like semi-civilzed, lower budget charaterization of Mad Max, the ridiculously influential and iconic The Road Warrior, Thunderdome, comparable and Fury Road with the also iconic Citadel, Warboys, Furiosa, Immortan Joe and a Max that did feel like the same character, as well. This lack of uniqueness in one aspect makes Furiosa ironically unique within the Mad Max universe. Is a real detriment toward it? Maybe in of how much I think it can be seen as its own thing, but that's not bad. It's still in many ways unique for its day. And I do think that Anya-Taylor Joy definitely brought something deep to the role that felt so much more hinted at in Fury Road, even if the character there was already quite compelling.
It's interesting, anyway. It really makes you think of the actual possibilites of what a 'prequel' could be, since specifically in movie form they rarely tend to take advantage of their format, or actually add anything.

Pretty well done! Not necessarily the most interesting or appealing story or characters to me, but pretty chill. Not a tropey, tradition love story, but kind of a play on one? Relays those complexities well and is executed with skill, but it doesn't hit me *that* deeply, or blows my head off with how great it is. But I do see the appeal of it, I think. Here, I'm seeing firsthand the obvious bias that naturally comes with music-, specifically concert-related films on Letterboxd; I obviously like Elvis Presley's music to begin with, and here, it's professionally filmed, played by a very professional band, with great back-up singers.
Elvis himself is somewhere at a pretty good point in of quality where in addition to his natural talent that made him a superstar at a young age, comes experience as a performer, but also a clear spark of wanting to play music, to perform, and to play. It's been pointed out how playful his performances here are, despite the scale of everything, his stardom, it still feels loose and cool, he jokes around, there's some improvisation and just this general feel that things are operating at just the right level.
The first half hour (which has some additional footage in the longer version that's pretty much just candid interviews with people working around Elvis shows, and also some fans) captures rehearsals, and as it's been said, it's really cool to see the musical side of Elvis, how the arragements in his show came to be, and how the performers interacted.
And then the lion's share is obviously concert footage, which then kind of speaks for itself, very nicely edited together from multiple performances. You can definitely look at 50s footage of Elvis and see the legend, but this show captured in action in this film is what spawned Elvis impersonators. Even if it ultimately ended up being too much, you can see the greatness here, and have fun.

Dumbo is one film where I'm actually not sure if I've seen it in its entirety before? I know that other Disney films I rewatched as an adult had imagery I ed, with Dumbo, it felt like it was less the case, but there are some fragments that did seem familiar, like the often discussed drunk sequence, or Dumbo being adorable when taking a bath.
Anyway, it's just adorable, and the quality of animation is as awesome as any classic Disney fim. I also feel like it bridges the gap between their shorts and features in an interesting way by being on the shorter side, and still at the same very focused on the musical numbers. It doesn't have the most engaging story ever, but it's very, very cute.
Final note on the sometimes discussed crow characters, I don't feel they're racist, and they're portrayal also isn't negative, the missteps with them in my opinion would be the name 'Jim Crow', which however isn't said in the film and has since been changed to 'Dandy Crow', and the fact that they didn't get a black performer for the lead, even though there were a great number of artists around. It's a product of its time, but not horribly offensive (unlike some shorts that exist) and I just imagine how cool it could've been to have, say, Fats Waller perform that memorable song from the third act instead (one of them was even unoffically named 'Fats', after all), even if Cliff Edwards was talented and they did use the Hall Johnson Choir.

Fun, charming and creatively animated. Has a lot of energy and translates the old comic books very well. It's largely based on one specific comic book from 1964, and I think it was a good decision for them to take a familiar blueprint to turn into a movie.
Unfortunately, this also brings some of the non-timely racial and cultural stereotypes with it, which aren't terribly offensive, and it is true to the original material and all played for comedy, every character is some level of silly (again, true to the text), but it's still there, ultimately.
But, overall, I'd describe it as being good fun, all of the weird action two lengthy, crazy chase sequences would've probably blown my mind if I'd watched this as a kid, like I watched two other Lucky Luke adaptations and also the Asterix films. Very happy they made it, even if it was apparently a straight-up financial loss.

Not really bad, but also not really great. Certainly interesting to watch because of the performances, some of which are good (I'll just single out Don Cheadle here) and some of which are more like bad impressions that never sound like actual people. But, alright.

I kind of feel bad for the actors in this, as they elevate it more than it deserves. I obviously watched this because of Nicolas Cage and didn't expect to be very good to begin with, I would've settled for 'okay'.
Unfortunately, it wasn't even that there was no chance it could've ever been okay, if that makes sense? The main problem is there's too much dialogue. Every single scene, everyone talks endlessly and the pacing suffers from it as circular conversations that want to be Tarantino-Western-esque go on and on. And the thing is, the actors do what they can with them. Literally every scene could've been improved by having less dialogue and also trimming it, and then it could've been an ok low budget western, even if it is pretty much completely by the numbers.
I myself know the dynamic of going on and on about the same subject (check most of my reviews), and a narrative like this that works better when it's simple and atmospheric and lets the silence breathe really suffers when it's written like this.
Anyway, Cage is Cage, and I hope Ryan Kiera Armstrong gets to be in better movies in the future.

I definitely watched this as a kid, probably several times. I the animation in a way any early childhood memory is kind of etched into your brain a little deeper than other things. Especially how creepy Medusa looks, also with her exaggerated mannerisms, and how cute the animals are, especially Bernard and Bianca themselves. It was pretty fun going on this journey again with them, the animation in this is as gorgeous as anything from this era of Disney, and the aforementioned main characters aren't just cute, but also very likeable.
At the same time though, I do have gripes with this. The soundtrack really isn't that great, the few songs are overly sentimental and the score is very silly, standard 70s adventure movie-ish, aside from a couple of fun ages.
I once again like the voice acting of the main characters, but everyone else is at least a little annoying. In the German dub I grew up watching I like the voices better, actually.
And then the story itself. I feel like the idea that a bunch of mice have an organization that apparently rescues humans is kind of glossed over and just kind of taken as a given. I want the characters to succeed because I like them and their goal is noble but it's still like, ok why? Oh never mind why, we're off!
The characters of Medusa and bumbling fat guy thug are maybe the least intimidating Disney villains ever. And I've also found her plan to be kind of absurd. You need some way to get into a little hole, so you kidnap an orphan child? Even for an animated movie it seems pointlessly convoluted and cruel.
It's all a little lazy and painting by the numbers and not quite as riveting as similar films from this time, but it was entertaining enough and again, the animation really is fantastic and elevates it a whole lot, but that also makes the parts that don't work as well stand out more, to me.

Genuinely pretty fun! Wasn't the most originial or unique work of all time, but it was a nice adventure, little heartwarming, had some good gags, great visuals.
I only muted two of the songs, which is pretty good for a Disney movie with this much music. This felt a lot like doing something classic Disney, taking an old story and updating it (in particular the modernization felt like Disney's Hercules, but it didn't annoy me in this movie), having a funny sidekick, songs of varying modernity, having that fairy tale feel. And the obvious Pixar influence then makes it feel a little Dreamworks-y as a result, but that's not bad.
Enjoyed it!

If you've ever wondered what ion project for Jason Statham looks like, this is it, I think? I didn't even know it was it a remake of a Burt Reynolds tough guy-type movie/novel until about an hour in, when I just happened to look it up. The plot is a bit meandering and it's not always clear what the stakes are even supposed to be, or where it's going, but I don't know. I still had fun with it. Statham is doing some interesting things with this character, even if it is also his standard action protagonist at the same time. There's many familiar faces (among them, confusingly, Hope Davis and Anne Heche, didn't know that way legal), the action is great, it has this kind of charm like they actually enjoyed making it, even if it feels like thee might've been some kind of point missing, or overarching idea... but it is entertaining, regardless.

I am aware of how beloved this is, and I do get it to a degree, most obviously, it has genuinely beautiful visuals, music, and just this romantic, uplifting energy to it that I like about other Ghibli films.
But somehow, I got really confused by the plot and just had trouble getting really invested. I recognize its appeal, but it didn't grab me very much, and there's many, many things of which I don't understand how they happened, or what the rules were, or stakes.

First of all, what can I say, these classic Muppet movies are the kind of things that have endured the test of time, so of course it was charming and funny, and had really endearing characters. I think I liked it a little better than the first one, that being kind of an origin story and showbusiness-fixated, this one was kind of a heist adventure, abroad, and I think that scenario just appeals to me a bit more. Also, them traveling, the Happiness Hotel, and the romance between Ms. Piggy and Kermit; I use this word frequently but I liked the kinetic fun of it.
I don't really if the other two I've seen, (The Muppet Movie and A Muppet Christmas Carol) had as much self-referential humor, but that's what made me laugh the most along with the slapstick parts. That all just works so very well with Muppets.
Like with the show, I can't say that I loved the music numbers itself, aside from maybe the final one, but it's still fun to watch the Muppets perform them.
As for the human characters, I probably did a bit of a double take at just how young Charles Grodin is here, which is enhanced by crazy sideburns, and he works really well in this context. I was pleasantly surprised to see Diana Rigg, even if she didn't show up anymore after the second act. And the scene with John Cleese and Joan Sanderson (who played a troublesome guest on Fawlty Towers, as well) was probably my favorite 'cameo' kind of part.
I could really imagine watching this again, it's a lot of fun.

I've had this on my shelf for a while, but as soon as I realized that most of this was going to be the pumpkinhead monster hunting down a bunch of young people like a slasher movie, combined with bad Southern accents, I just got so tired immediately.
Such a forgettable slog, except maybe for some moments that are visually neat, or have some technical merit. But I just didn't care. You ultimately do want to care about what's happening. The music was also quite good, but not enough to really save it, as well.
And even the creature itself. For Stan Winston, very eh.
