★★★½ Rewatched

This is the first film to unlock the potential of the series, and even the title sequence has more energy than the previous films. Brad Bird sets the bar to a new height. Most of the new team is fine, but Luther deserves more screen time. Also, the tech is cool when it works, and it's even more entertaining when it doesn't, which happens more than you might expect.

This film only really works because of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s masterful performance. He's so good that it tricks the audience into believing that the movie itself is great. The emotional center of the story also works surprisingly well, though that might just be because of Michelle Monaghan. In fact, all of the very best things about MI:3 are casting-related and April Webster (the casting director) is the real hero.

I saw this before it was released as a "mystery movie" and missed my chance to leave the very first Letterboxd review. Oh, well. This film was quirky and slow-paced, but it made me laugh a few times.

It wasn't the most amazing movie ever, but it was still entertaining and charming, just not a groundbreaking masterpiece. The vibe was different, but not in a bad way, and the pace kinda let the story do its thing. Not sure what…
