This is the first film to unlock the potential of the series, and even the title sequence has more energy than the previous films. Brad Bird sets the bar to a new height. Most of the new team is fine, but Luther deserves more screen time. Also, the tech is cool when it works, and it's even more entertaining when it doesn't, which happens more than you might expect.

This film only really works because of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s masterful performance. He's so good that it tricks the audience into believing that the movie itself is great. The emotional center of the story also works surprisingly well, though that might just be because of Michelle Monaghan. In fact, all of the very best things about MI:3 are casting-related and April Webster (the casting director) is the real hero.

And while I'm no fan of Jar Jar Abrams, much less the other writers (Kurtzman and Orci) I have to give them credit for jumpstarting this franchise, because it realistically should have died after 2 and without this one we never would have gotten to the good stuff.

[Random trivia: To promote this film, Paramount rigged 4,500 randomly selected Los Angeles Times vending boxes with digital audio players which would play the theme song when the door was opened. I have to believe that some of these made it into private collections.]

I didn't like this one the first time around and liked it even less during this rewatch. Ethan Hunt’s instant infatuation with the thief feels forced and unconvincing, undermining any emotional weight. The film leans hard into self-conscious “cool” moments that mostly fall flat. The script reduces Luther to quips about designer clothes, sidelining his depth, but at least Tom Cruise looks cool with his long hair. Overloaded with flashy mask reveals and lacking substance, it’s all style and no soul. The weakest link in the franchise, by far.

Still packs a (soft) punch nearly three decades later, with its pacing and plot largely holding up. The film’s dated technology, however, feels like a relic of the '90s. De Palma’s signature style shines through, but his distinct tone feels almost quaint compared to the more recent sequels. The cast is fine, but they feel like they exist in some random pre-90s era. Worth revisiting for nostalgia purposes, I suppose.

EDIT:
Worth reviewing for the IMF message

There's a Letterboxd review here with someone saying that they still don't understand Bitcoin and another one of the most popular reviews believes that it is a scam, with several friends reinforcing that bad take in the comments. This film never quite went in the direction I was expecting and that made it so much better than anything that I've seen in a while. My only issue is that some of the characters seem overly 2-dimensional, but that's really just a minor nitpick.

Lately, they seem to have gotten really good at making mediocre, middle-of-the-road movies (they're not really bad, but they also aren't really all that good) and it was refreshing to encounter something that breaks out of that category—and in the right direction.

My recommendation would be to go into this one with as little information as possible, but, if you're reading this, there's a good chance you already know something about the story.

The good:

• this movie is fun
• the leads have chemistry
• seemed fun for the filmmakers

The bad:
• why is this based on an old 80s TV show? (I watched that show and it had NO bearing on my desire to see this)
• why is the film-within-the-film based on an old 80s movie? (I vaguely it, but it seemed like a missed opportunity for something fresh and original)
• why did the trailer spoil so much? (like, so much)

The ugly:
• seriously, why did they use elements from the CLIMAX of the film in the trailer? It might* have been okay if I hadn't been subjected to seeing the trailer about half a million times, but that was, unfortunately, not the case. If you can't sell your movie to an audience ONLY using footage from the first 2 acts of your film in the trailer then your movie deserves to fail.

Overall, I liked it, but it would have been a more enjoyable experience if the trailer hadn't ruined several key moments for me

The good stuff is pretty good, but the bad stuff is pretty darn bad. I accidentally went to see this for a 4DX showing and that didn't add any enjoyment to the film for me.

Let me tell you what I think about Matthew Vaughan with an analogy based on a 2001 video game: The game was Max Payne. It was a little bit cheesy and overly dramatic and the graphics were ok for the time, but the gameplay was fun and it let you do some things that games had never done before. Years later, they released a sequel. The sequel had better graphics, but it seemed like they took all of the cheesy and overly dramatic elements from the first game that I didn't like and cranked them up to eleven. I feel like we're starting to see the MaxPayne2-ification of Matthew Vaughan with the last couple films of his that I've seen. All the worst elements are being highlighted and expanded and all the good stuff is fading away. I hope this isn't a trend that continues.

This was mostly a fun ride, but it would be a stretch to call it good. It was, however, better than any of these other comic book films and it's certainly not the worst thing the MCU has given us recently.

the good:
• the princessification of Carol Danvers
• Kamala is delightful
• whenever the 3 main leads were together, it was fun

the bad:
• Kamala's fangirling sometimes goes a little too hard
• typical bland Marvel villain issues
• there's basically no plot

the ugly:
• "Oh Captain, my Captain"
• "Black Girl Magic"
• "Intergalactic" was wasted in the film

The Flerkens didn't really add much to the story for me. They seemed designed specifically for a story beat problem that didn't even need to exist, but people think they're cute so, whatever, I guess. I'm sure the futuristic agency with a station in space decided to include escape pods with the same percentage as Titanic lifeboats, just in case of an emergency. Riiiigghhht.

Anyway, less mediocrity for the entire genre would be nice in the future.

I’ve been a fan of the Evil Dead series from the beginning, so it is with heavy heart that I it that this entry didn't quite do it for me. My feelings after the credits rolled were a blend of disappointment and dissatisfaction.

The city setting was a fresh choice, but it just felt a little out of sync with the essence of the series. That said, the framing device played things a little too close to what has come before, so maybe I’m just too hard to please. And while the title reveal was superb and expertly executed, the rest of the intro sequence just wasted time that could have been used for the main story.

Also, almost every good moment was already in the trailer, and it always kinda sucks when that happens. I mean, I went into the theater genuinely wanting to love this film, but ended up feeling like I'd seen all the best parts already.

Overall, this one just wasn't my cup of tea. Viewers looking for a new spin on things in this franchise might find more to like than I did, though, as evidenced by the majority of the other reviews here. Give it a shot if you're curious, but for me, it was a bit of a miss. Hopefully this helps you make an informed decision.

I still don’t know why they haven’t resurrected the premise from the 80s cartoon for a film, but maybe they’ll eventually get there. Compared to the first film in this franchise, this one was a huge improvement, but that was practically inevitable.

While a lot of the humor didn't quite land, the film definitely had its moments with some exciting and fresh action sequences. One particular aspect felt a bit too similar to another movie, but it wasn't a dealbreaker. And there is a scene at the end that you'll see coming a mile away, but they handle it with a warmth that makes it land. There is also a fair amount of exposition, but they thankfully used flashbacks to show it instead of just dialogue, which, ittedly, is sort of a cheat for “show, don’t tell.”

It's nice that it doesn't seem to be pushing for a sequel, and the D&D nerds will presumably appreciate its faithfulness, though I can’t say for sure because the only time I ever tried to play Dungeons and Dragons, the experienced players ganged up on the newbies and massacred them for their loot.

Surprisingly, the other reviews for this film are higher than I expected, which will hopefully lead to more entries. Overall, I had a fun time watching it, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of these movies in the future. It's not perfect, but it's an enjoyable ride with some fun action.

I saw this before it was released as a "mystery movie" and missed my chance to leave the very first Letterboxd review. Oh, well. This film was quirky and slow-paced, but it made me laugh a few times.

It wasn't the most amazing movie ever, but it was still entertaining and charming, just not a groundbreaking masterpiece. The vibe was different, but not in a bad way, and the pace kinda let the story do its thing. Not sure what exactly it was trying to say, and that's probably the weakest part of it.

Anyway, it's got an offbeat charm that some of you might dig. It seemed like everyone was having fun, so if you're a fan of any of the people involved, it's definitely worth checking out.

EDIT:
Kinda surprised to see that most of the reviews for this film are pretty low. I mean, it wasn't amazing, but it definitely had some charm.

Sweet and full of heart, but ultimately underwhelming, even if it does expose how fickle high school kids can be.

Manic pixie dream girls probably do exist, but they're most likely never this watered down. It seems like the notes from the studio said something like "make her almost normal, but have everyone react to her like she's so weird."

In real life, she almost certainly would have been bullied, but those bullies —along with the reviewers here that joke about wanting to bully her— are the worst kind of people. This is precisely the type of film that should dissuade bullying, but it unfortunately didn't know what message it wanted to convey.

Most of the people reviewing this movie must have seen a completely different film than the one I watched the other night.

Was it manipulative? I don't think so. (I wonder what the people saying so think about the extremely manipulative, yet universally well-liked film, Atonement.) Was it predictable? If I had stopped to think about it instead of just letting the story unfold, I suppose it could have been. Did this film contain two of the best Olivias in existence? Without question. Would I have felt betrayed if I had a crush on Oscar Isaac? Possibly. Was the subject matter presented in a heavy-handed way? It for sure was, but that could just be the effect of telling multiple smaller stories in the same amount of screen time that usually only contains one story. Did they focus way too much on Bob Dylan? Yes, it's excruciating. Something to think about, though: Does this movie provoke strong responses from viewers, who either really like it or really hate it? That's art.

I'm not sure why I started watching this and I'm even less sure why I kept watching it. It's a ridiculous and silly film that's probably meant for an audience somewhere in the age range of the two kids.

That said, it's sweet and full of heart, and the outtakes made it seem like they had a lot of fun making it. I can't help thinking about the end of Bowfinger with a film like this: these people made a movie, and, despite what some of the reviewers here have said, it wasn't complete trash.

Friendly PSA: the Jurassic franchise does not own all of the dinosaurs. Feel free to write your own dino stories, people.

  1. Jurassic Park

A truly important movie that redefined the landscape of film.

  2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park

It's all about the scene with the mobile lab on the edge of the cliff in the rain. Much of the rest of the film is laughable.

  3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Films in which I (mistersplice) am an extra 5k5s3x https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/mistersplice/list/films-in-which-i-mistersplice-am-an-extra/ letterboxd-list-2811393 Wed, 18 Jul 2018 22:05:59 +1200 <![CDATA[

Sadly, it's one of the most embarrassing moments of my entire life:

The people-wranglers handed out props for the "audience" to use during the final golf shot: empty plastic cups. So I have this empty cup to appear more like a "real" person watching a golf match. Unfortunately, it was a windy day, and I could not put the cup down, lest it fly away. Then, all of a sudden, the cameras are filming us and I have a cup that I can't put down, and I also can't clap or cheer effectively — like we are supposed to be doing — so in a nervous, near-panic state, the only thing I can think of is to pretend to take a drink from my imaginary beverage. It's awkward and embarrassing and CAUGHT ON FILM and I'm sure the editor absolutely hated me. Sorry.

Remake and Reboot 5f3i2w Ready Films (according to mistersplice) https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/mistersplice/list/remake-and-reboot-ready-films-according-to/ letterboxd-list-2794652 Fri, 13 Jul 2018 21:54:20 +1200 <![CDATA[

Films that deserve another chance with a better (or updated) remake. None of these films are particularly bad, but they could be so much better...

If I had the opportunity, I would reimagine all of these films with updates and improvements.
