The Trump stuff is lame, Ruffalo hams it up way better in Poor Things without taking away from the main character(s) as he does here. Collette's character and her sauce obsession is also overused. How does one go from Shallow Grave and Trainspotting to this and Trance? Really quite remarkably terrible, taking a pretty good premise, a likeable lead, and some of the best songs ever written and ruining it with some of the laziest writing I've ever witnessed. This movie is really fucking dumb. Beyond the weird quasi-incest/child porn story, the main focus is on long voiceovers about circles and how fate rules everything. While it's not bad visually, the acting is dreadful, the symbolism is on the nose, and the whole thing just comes off as if some stoner dude watched a lot of Wong Kar-Wai and Kieslowski and thought 'I could do that'. Well, he can't. What I've seen of Room in Rome also suffers from stupid dialogue and an over-wrought soundtrack, but at least that film has a softcore angle, struggling to see what the purpose of this one is.

Extremely my shit. The cinematic equivalent of a hot toddy on a cold winter's night. Imagine The Lighthouse but instead of going mad they actually become friends and give each other piggy back rides.
