Oh God, Pee-wee 😭

As a child, my father and I watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure constantly. I loved it, I loved Pee-wee. But what's so special about this documentary is that we get to see what a rich life Paul Reuban's lived both with and without Pee-wee--his Frankenstein.

I loved the stuff about CalArts, that little queer artistic community. Paul Reuban's insanely hot in his youth and also all throughout his life?? I love to hear about the arts scenes throughout the years. We live in such a castrated era. Bring back dirt and sex and punk rock. I think the level of his performance art is so incredible because it looks almost effortless. Pee-wee is real, and that's sort of profound.

I think it's really heartbreaking that he felt like the two could not coexist. When he said that he felt like he lost himself in his first relationship and swore off them, I cried. I relate to that, heartbreak is so hard. It's easier to be independent and control one's career. It's easy to be tough on yourself.

A fascinating documentary tinged with the sadness of a great loss.

I hadn't seen this since high school, but my friends turned it on as an early Pride celebration. At times it's a little corny, but still manages to be devastating. I think the moment where they kiss and Ennis' wife sees them is so campy yet equally profound. It's funny to watch her watch them because it's so horrifying for each character. What a kiss, too! I think the most beautiful part is when Ennis asks his daughter if her fiance really loves her, what an entrenched feeling for him. I'm constantly trying to figure out love as if it's an equation, but it's all things. It's like how black is the absence of color, but white is everything: a prism which all light es through. I think of the beautiful pastoral landscapes in this movie, how safe it is to be nowhere with someone who understands the deepest parts of you--parts you don't even know yourself. I think love is supposed to be easy, but it can be hard sometimes, too. There are so many unknowns in this world; to know someone, to love them more than you love yourself, maybe that's the whole point.

I think it's an interesting experiment. It's honestly more disturbing with its atmospheric dissonance than any Ari Aster film. The makeup and cult-like regression are creepy, much deeper than the Lord of the Flies parallel that the summary posits. But there isn't really much to cling onto otherwise. That's sort of the point: the girls are shapeless caricatures because this is more allegory than original story. I guess it could've been a lot more, but it's a weird little film and I liked it. Young Maya Hawke jumpscare.

I really enjoyed the fact that they roasted the Space Needle, which I visited this summer and pissed my pants the whole time. A glass floor is insane! I think what I loved about this is that it was self aware and had a sense of humor. You can tell the directors revered the original films and I loved them. I don't really like films where the killing is "realistic" and a lot of the deaths in this were silly. During the film, my friend leaned over and asked me how they knew Death was a man, and I know why: because he killed a beautiful man like Erik whom I can only assume has a gorgeous penis piercing! His whole arc was so good. We didn't really get to spend a lot of time with the family but I thought they each left their mark nicely. It's a lot of fun, and gross, but I enjoyed it. Time ed quickly. Now I'm scared to go outside in Chicago where the trains run above you.

More of a melodrama than a horror movie, and I think it could've been a little shorter, but it's a beautiful film and I found the ending very haunting. The scene where she has the freakout is so good, just viscerally panic inducing, shot so wonderfully. It's a very cool film, just wish there had been more body horror stuff. I love that the detective talks like Rust Cohle from True Detective.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid and I used to watch it with my dad. He's currently ruining my life because he refuses to seek treatment for his mental illness (which I can bitch about because I'm also mentally ill). The 70s were a wild time. They didn't have therapy, only cheap beer and mustaches. This, today, continues to be my therapy of choice, too (though I prefer cider). I think the Hanson Brothers are some of the best characters ever written. I understand why every woman is in love with them, I know it's generationally talented dong. Insane that this was written by a woman who also stars in the film! The only unbelievable aspect is that Paul Newman would ever be a loser. Look at him, he's a god. He would never lie or try to cheat me 🙂. Jockstrap scene is one of my favorites ever.

This film profoundly moved me, one of those films that changes you. The scene with Neil, the coach, and the cereal almost made me cry, so chilling in its tenderness. I think everyone can guess the reveal at the end, but the writing and acting is so excellent that you're right there with them all the way. I never tuned out and I waited for the revelation with them. Brady Corbet go back to acting. A perfect little gem of a film! Truly incredible that it was mostly improvised and also a true story. An experimental film that doesn't feel like it at all, it goes down easy. I could watch these little old ladies talk forever and ever.

My grandmother turned 90 on Monday which is a pretty incredible feat and she's still very lucid. I know she wants me to visit soon, but it's so exhausting to truck down south and sit with her. But how selfish is that of me! This film made me think of her, and how I want to see her.

One of my favorite first watches of the year. I love a slow film where people are just talking to each other. It's one of the reasons Columbus is one of my favorite films.

I love art museums, I always feel so safe in them. Although I haven't seen much of the world, I know that the Art Institute is one of my favorite places in the world. When I was a teenager, I'd go once a year and the experience always felt sacred. An education outside of school. Now, I have a hip and I try to go once a month. It still feels special each time. I like to go and sit and read sometimes, and watch the people meander. I often wonder what the guards are thinking about, where they go in their minds with so much time. I found Johann's character really provocative: a modern flaneur. The pleasure and curse of being a writer is that we are forced to observe. I liked listening to his observations. I loved the story about the punk boy.

I think the friendship between Johann and Anne is very sweet. Platonic love is still a type of love. How beautiful it is to show someone a new place, a new world. To see it through their eyes or to know that you will never be able to see it through their eyes, that our perspective is, for better or worse, our own.

Incredibly mid, which was really disappointing because I think Tim Robinson is so funny. But one of the things I enjoy about I Think You Should Leave is that it's really innovative and this was just Tim Robinson doing bits for 100 minutes, which sounds great but it gets really exhausting after a point. It's funny but there isn't a narrative and the writing outside of Craig is awful.

Everyone in the theater scream-laughed when he tripped at Subway and I found that so boring! I did like when he ate the soap at Austin's party though. Also, Connor O'Malley had about a minute of screentime and I cried laughing during all of it. A movie that could've just been another season of I Think You Should Leave.

If you're going to hell, keep going.

A genuinely hilarious dark comedy. James Sweeney is so talented. Funny acting and directing from him. I loved when Roman pulls out the single Poptart from the pack. Dylan O'Brien is really good. You want to hate his portrayal of Rocky because he's doing a gay little voice and Rocky is dressed like Robin Williams in The Birdcage but it's a great character. I found it really sweet when he and Dennis are under the covers. Didn't know James Sweeney and Dylan O'Brien were going to be at the Music Box where I saw this. Dylan O'Brien ed by me when I was in line and my heart leapt. So embarrassing!

I loved the dynamic between Fiennes and Bassett. Ralph looks so hot in this film and he's speaking with an accent that's never been spoken by a human being before. When he's longingly watching Juliette Lewis sing? Beautiful. Lenny is such a great character, a lovable loser with a great jacket. Mostly useless. God, I need him. Kyioshi Kurosawa is the master of creating spookiness out of nothing. Although when he stabbed the young woman, I was genuinely shocked. I did not expect that to be so gruesome. Also, the main actor has a really great face, the close ups of his terror are so astonishing. Everyone's expressions were so uncanny! Saw this early at Mubi Fest at the Salt Shed which was sort of like a big influencer event but I got two free tote bags so I can't complain (I'm not Stephen Malkmus).

At the Q&A afterward, Alex Ross Perry said Stephen Malkmus never checks his email which is so on brand. In some ways, he is the real deal--a slacker artist trying to be "anti- establishment," but as this documentary shows, that's impossible. He's a privileged white kid from Stockton, CA. He plays tennis now. Yet, Wowee Zowee was an intentional bomb to sabotage the band from getting big, and that's kind of incredible. He's sort of John, Paul, and George rolled into one. Everyone else in the band is Ringo. It's crazy their songs are so deep.

I was born a little too late to be a true Pavement head. My Matador Records band was and always will be Interpol. When I first heard them at 13, I felt like I was listening to the sound of my soul. I still feel that way. I listened to Narc as I left the theater. Pivoting, my favorite Pavement song is Newark Wilder. The Mubi social media interns asked me my favorite song as I entered the building. Do not put me on Tik Tok interns!! I had had two blue Mubi margaritas.

I joke because commercialization is sort of at the heart of this documentary, as Perry is trying to lampoon those Oscar bait music biopics that saturate the industry. This documentary is a collage of archival footage, interviews with the band--but it also plays with fiction, staging a fake musical, movie, and museum show. Those things were really fun and magical. Joe Keery "plays" Stephen Malkmus and you don't want him to be funny because Stranger Things sucks but he's so funny and cute. And when I'm back in Chicago I do feel it! The musical was the best part for me. At first I worried it was being too mean to the musical theater people, because they are nerds, but it handled it sincerely and that was sweet.

I think my biggest problem is that I, personally, don't like when films are too anti- something because then that feels like a gimmick, too. If your whole film is anti-music biopics, then it's just as bad as those films, or at least uninspired. This didn't feel uninspired however, I think because Perry really appreciates the culture the band thrived in. It feels super ironic but still honest and funny. Stephen Malkmus is a genius but also pretentious.

I think this is worth seeing because it was an interesting hybrid film about a great band.

Girls only want one thing and it's to buy a horse and avenge their father's death.

I think Mattie is one of the best characters ever written. I recently finished the book and loved it so I decided to watch this. Part of my displeasure in watching this film is that much of her moralizing is removed in favor of advancing the plot. She is a severe young woman who grows up to be a rich and unremorseful old maid and that rocks so hard.

I also don't like that they made her relationship with LeBoeuf matter more to the story than it really did; Matt Damon has the worst accent! I wish they had done more with the beginning. I love the scene where Mattie meets Rooster in the book. Although I am not proud, or maybe I am, I find Rooster extremely fuckable. I love when he carries Mattie to town after she's bitten. That's a real man.

I think I may have watched the John Wayne version with my dad when I was really young. He used to be obsessed with cowboy movies and we watched a lot of them. I found most of them boring, but I've always had an affinity for cowboys because of it. It must feel so good to traverse a dusty plain with just your horse and a hard tack roll. I think my favorite thing about this is everyone's weird morals. Ned Peppers treats Mattie respectfully, despite kidnapping her. Robbers aren't supposed to kill women and children. Rooster doesn't steal from individuals, just banks. I love rules and laws: I wish there were more just ones.

If you enjoyed this movie you absolutely have to read the book as it's funny and sweet and an absolute page turner. Much richer than a film adaptation could ever be.

Sunday nights are the perfect time to watch a three hour contemplative foreign film. I loved how dreamy this was; beautiful scenery. Loved the scene with them outside of the school. And the kissing, God, what great kissing.

Feeling rather existential tonight. I'm scared that I'll die without ever having lived. Classic Sunday scariest though. I don't know. I like this film because it chases after grand explanations yet comes up short. The journey to find meaning is futile, but the journey itself can be meaningful.

I miss when they let actors who were a little ugly be the leads in movies. Incredibly bleak in a way that feels sort of refreshing. We are all doomed! Love is not enough!

I really enjoyed this. I like how the cultural footage punctuated the white foolishness. Really beautifully filmed. I understand Molly, unfortunately. Obviously, I would chase that handsome pathetic man across all of Asia despite it being abundantly clear he doesn't want to marry me. I couldn't help but think, however, outside of my own romantic folly, what a great metaphor it was for colonization. Molly couldn't simply be happy with that rich man: She wanted something impossible--the fruit of her conviction--and she would spend anything, and jeopardize any life including her own to get it. She could've stayed in that mansion and enjoyed the rest of her life but alas! I like that the film ended with Molly's journey. Much more nuanced a character than Edward. I loved her conversation with the priest who wanted to go back to England and eat toast with jam. She's perturbed because he's giving up on his faith. "It's liberating," he says. Perhaps we could all do with less convictions, though he does immediately die after saying that, so. Are we doomed to chase our desires for the rest of our lives? Or can we ever be content with what we have? Asia is so stunningly beautiful, I hope to have a less racist grand tour someday.

People are ghosts, and ghosts are people.

I love when she goes crazy at the end. It's an infuriating circumstance she finds herself in. I often think about how women perpetuate misogyny, but of course this is a symptom of patriarchal control. Suicide can be one of the only ways to wrest control. Just a sad film all around. Gong Li is so beautiful. Wish I could've watched/understood this in the original language, the subtitles on my library DVD were lackluster.

Probably not that good of a film but it is extremely my shit. I have always dreamt of being so beautiful and observant that I'm made an honorary detective and given a gun. I absolutely adore Lucille Ball. I used to watch I Love Lucy as a child and I wanted to be her. I wanted a tumultuous love like Lucy and Ricky (sorry if that's problematic, I'm a good person). Poet serial killer is so funny, lot of humor in this, tons of weird guys.

Bad. Terrible. Nicole Kidman's character watched Mrs. Doubtfire and is startled by the realization that Mrs. Doubtfire is their dad. Foreshadowing for the stupid twist? They should've just made this into an erotic masterpiece where Nicole Kidman actually has sex with Gael Garcia Bernal. He's so cute I want to put him in my pocket. Love that he had a container of nuts on the table in the living room of his bachelor pad: the set dresser knows Men.

Holland, Michigan is a really cute place! I went in 2018 during my week long vacation from being a camp counselor at a fine arts camp where the tweens made me workshop their Hamilton fanfiction. The windmill in Holland is the only operating windmill outside of the Netherlands which is really cool. It's run by a female miller! And all the little tour guides wear crazy wooden clogs. I bought a cute mug in the gift shop but I missed the tulip festival by a month. I love the Midwest. I'm still trying to make it to Columbus, Indiana.

I think that I was spoiled watching Andrew Scott play every character in Uncle Vanya. It didn't feel gimmicky, it felt bare. This, a purposely stripped down version of Vanya, even feels like too much. But it's pleasurable to watch several amazing character actors interact in this meta play. Wallace Stevens as Uncle gave everything ❤️

I will never abide by cheating sorry. Call it trauma or whatever, if you have a whole family you need to be more responsible about your desires. I'm not saying breaking up is ever easy but c'mon. Sort of a haunting look at how we make meaning amidst the pointlessness of existence. Incredibly funny! The guy who came out of the woods to pitch for five minutes was probably the funniest thing I've seen in months. A film about every autistic guy in Western Massachusetts convening on one field to play the shittiest game of baseball. I liked how surreal it felt at times and I loved how some of the funniest lines were shouted in the background or said under someone's breath. We are both liberated and trapped by our need to create meaning in our lives. Great flick!
