FICUNAM 2024
(this could be part of the Chinese Rush, even if it is a Singapore film)

This one reminded me a little bit of the Romanian Pororoca, it was about a missing daughter that makes the couple break. However, the focus in this one was different, and the ending was less dreadful.

This thriller was more focused on a stalking part, that could easily reminds the coldness of the films of Michael Haneke. Despite I felt it a little bit tiresome, the film was OK.

FICUNAM 2025
Chinese Rush (3/3)

Jia Zhangke is probably one of the pillars of the Chinese contemporary cinema. His decade-spanning works are a portrait of the evolution, highs and lows of China.

In his latest work, he made something curious, and even atypical, like a sort of time-capsule filming set in three different stages of the 21st century China.

Apparently, it's a love story, but it goes beyond that. I felt it more like an immersive experience from the hopes from the new century to the COVID pandemic. In some parts there was more footage moments than story, specially in the first part (probably it was its only flaw), but in the end this was one of the kings with no crown of Cannes 2024.

P.S. I noticed that the three years that this story takes part are the same years that Todd Field made a film: 2001 (In the Bedroom), 2006 (Little Children) and 2022 (TÁR).

FICUNAM 2025
Chinese Rush (2/3)

Last part of this trilogy of Wang Bing. Unlike the two other parts, the proportion between workshops/homeland was different, like 40/60 (the first two parts were about 90,95/10,5).

This time it was more focused on certain characters that celebrate their wedding. By the way, this one was, in some sense, a little bit optimistic.

FICUNAM 2025
Chinese Rush (1/3)

We watched the last year in this festival Youth (Spring), the first part of this trilogy of Wang Bing. This time, we have the two reimaning parts.

The second part returns us back to the textile workshops in Zhili. The first 45 minutes could easily remind the first part: the lifetime of these young people. But then, the problems began: a guy who can't find his paybook to get his wages, people that was stranded because their boss ran away without paying them, other people struggling to find a new job, etc.

This one was longer than (Spring), however, unlike the first part, I felt this second part with more substance, even if the ending is almost the same (the return to some of the workerd to their homelands).

FICUNAM 2025

This one was the opening film of the festival. By the way, it seems that the presence of Athina Rachel Tsangari in this festival was very important, she won the Audience Award and Best Director Award in the first edition with Attenberg. This time, she said some words about this film before the movie.

Of course that this film didn't have those elements of the Greek Weird Wave, a movement that she took part of it, but it has some wicked feeling, it gave me some vibes of Bacurau.

It curious that it has some moments that made it feel more short, despite its slow-paced tone.

FICUNAM 2025 (International Competition)

After a failed screening that was postponed due to an extraordinary elections in Mexico. I begin this edition of the festival with one of the films of the competition.

It seems that this director already made some works, including a work here in Mexico (Ts'onot). In this case, it's clear why this film is here. A complete sensorial and dreamlike journey between shadows, forest, caves and other places.

With few dialogues and a lot of "few action" this one was weird, but well, there are more to be watched.

My second pick of Sundance CDMX, the sole Latin American film of the World Cinema Dramatic Section.

I want to read the work of the Argentinian writer Mariana Enríquez, one of the new voices of the Latin American horror. This film is an adaptation of two of her short stories, so I think that this was a good starting point.

A dark coming of age that includes some sorcery and fantastic elements, as well as topics like the Argentinian 2001 recession. It has some elements that the fans of the films of Julia Ducornau would love.

Maybe one of its flaws was that there were some loose arcs, including the integration of the homeless' trolley. However, after all, it has a feeling of lack of hope, but the end was curious.

Now see you in FICUNAM.

In this edition of Sundance in Mexico City, I started with this film, winner of the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Section, as well as an an acting special mention for Dylan O'Brien.

At first, I thought that it would be a film about mourning and grief, in this case, when you lose a twin brother, but then, it turns into an anti-bromance film. I won't make too much spoilers with this film.

I felt this film with a similar dose of tension like Not Okay, maybe because that was one of the most interesting things of the film, that the lie would be unvealed. By the way, that ending had some glimpses of the ending of Y Tu Mamá También.

Many people is getting bored with the style of Wes Anderson. Well, in fact I'm not sure about that. I'm not a big fan of his filmography, but I know about his patented aesthetic and epic casts.

I must have to say that there were works that I liked more than others and now that I watched almost all his filmography (except Bottle Rocket), I have to say, unfortunately, that this one didn't worked well for me. Asteroid City, his former work, despite wasn't too much loved for most of the audience, I consider it interesting and nice.

Song Kang-ho again. For some reason this film gave me vibes of A Taxi Driver, because it's starring the same actor in a drama of the second half of the 20th century between 70's/80's, but also because in the first half-hour it has comedy moments, and then it becomes more obscure. Final Destination Bloodlines 503o73 2025 - ★★★★½ (contains spoilers) https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/okrc/film/final-destination-bloodlines/ letterboxd-review-892126077 Mon, 19 May 2025 13:39:46 +1200 2025-05-18 No Final Destination Bloodlines 2025 4.5 574475 <![CDATA[

This review may contain spoilers.

This one will be long, so here we go...

When I was 14, a Sunday night that I had nothing to do, I made videozapping on TV and I discovered Final Destination 3, then I watched the 2 and 1 some months later on TV too. The Final Destination was released in theaters, but I couldn't watched it. However, I watched the 5th on 2011. With that, I hoped that it was the end, but well, 14 years later, here were are again, in this impossible escape from death saga.

Probably my younger version would thought "oh god, the same old song again, this saga is so much wasted", but, to be honest, the idea of a "hereditary presage", was a nice change to made it feel a little bit fresh.

This film has a lot of virtues and vices of all the other films of the saga, so, here we go.

-FD: There are not many deaths, and there's more plot about how to escape from death. And the climax is very similar when Alex saves Clear.
-FD2: First, Kimberly's cameo. And then, on the same climax, Kimberly and Steph almost died drowned.
-FD3: For me, this one had the most sophisticated chain reactions before the death. And FD Bloodlines had some of the most interesting chain reactions. Well, in this part the song Stronger of Kelly Clarkson plays. And it's main verse "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" was in the gym of FD3.
-FD4 a.k.a The FD: The worst for many, and here it shares the same problem that the main characters die. Honestly, they deserved to last a little bit longer.
-FD5: Same problem with FD4

-Appendix I: Where have I seen this before?:
After watching the full saga when I was 17. I thought that there were better shows than this about weird deaths: 1000 Ways to Die and Another. When I watched FD5 I discovered one reference shown on 1000WTD, and another one on the fourth. In the case of the anime, in fact it was about a curse, and not about chasing from death, but there are iconical deaths here, like Yukari's death with the umbrella. This one took at least two deaths from 1000WTD and one from Another. However, this didn't bother me.
Then some extreme gore, since FD4 there's some Happy Tree Friends-esque moments, in fact some deaths of the saga feels like this show. And FD Bloodlines isn't the exception.

-Appendix 2: Thanks for all Tony Todd a.k.a William J. Bludworth. When you left, I really felt upset.

Alongside Pandora's Box, this is a film that I watched in a museum's retrospective of German expressionism.

I'm not sure if this one was the best film to start with Fritz Lang (most say that Metropolis). However, it's a solid film of its time, even if some parts before the capture of the serial killer were a little bit boring. However, that sudden end, was, atypical.

M(a)y Korea Challenge 2025
12. (Directed by) Kim Ki-duk

This one is the only film of this filmmaker that I haven't watched yet (excluding his posthumous work).
I don't know if this one is valid, because it's set in Japan with Japanese characters (I saw films like Mickey 17, Okja and Stoker tagged in this challenge). However, Kim directed a pair of films with a Japanese main character: Dream and Human, Space, Time and Human.
A tale about the nuclear paranoia of the Japanese people due to Fukushima's nuclear disaster. It has its amateur-esque style of his latest works, and of course that heartless and violent style, and despite it's not his best of the 201X decade, at least was curious.

All the films that I've watched in theaters in 2025.
In a country like Mexico most films, specially those of the most prominent festivals, arrive late, so I'll mention if the film took part of a local festival or if it was in a regular screening.

The last year I watched 140 films. Let's see if I'll break this record...

Another special list that involves the Letterboxd showdowns.

In this case, I'm going to mention a film for every showdown.

The rules are simple:

-The film must not take part of the final consensus. Unfortunately, I broke this rule in only one case.

-The film must not be mentioned in my showdowns (in those cases that I've already made the list). There are some exceptions.

-These films won't be counted in my list of film mentions in all my showdowns.

The idea is inspired from the Showdown Challenge.

Today (July 11, 2022) I reached a milestone in my profile: 1000 films with a 4.5 stars rating.

Perhaps most films that I rated so high don't deserve it, but these are my personal rates, however...

Obviously, inside this spectrum, there are many films that I love more than others, so, here's my selection of favorite films that are "almost perfect". (I'm excluding shorts, mini-series and live performances)

I finished the 10th Letterboxd Season Challenge. But I'm always looking for another interesting challenges.

To be honest, some of them are interesting (Japanuary, March Around the World, Anime Marches On), but I don't use to them because most of them you must have to write a review, (sorry, I'm a little bit lazy in this part) however, I decided to this one. Don't worry, I must write a review this time.

The rules are simple. This month I must watch at least 10 Korean films, with some criteria. Probably I'll watch more than 10 films.

The list will be updated if some film appears.

I've started this list as a kind of "second watchlist" for films of this year or the last one, and, when I watch any of these films, I delete later the film of this list.

I know that most of these films were released in the theaters of regions like North America, Europe, etc. but unfortunately, in my country (Mexico) most of them (specially the festival films) are released in theaters one or even two years later.

In this list were titles of the awards season 2021, like Minari, Nomadland or Another Round, awarded in the mayor festivals, films of anime, of my favorite directors, etc. Theoretically, there are some films that had a premiere in Mexican festivals, and few of them had regular screenings in Mexican theaters.

I hope that I will watch this films in a theater, or at least in some streaming media.

These films aren't in my main watchlist, because I'm not sure if I'm gonna watch them in my country.

The films that I watched will be moved into this list.

So, to commemorate it, this is my personal rank of A24 films (so far I've watched).
I discovered this film company in the early 2020, with Waves, and it was the beginning of the love...

This list will be updated as soon as I watch more films of A24.

The first list of this special season comprises every film that was on this list, my watchlist of latest or films in my country, but I watched it later, either in theaters or in streaming, and that's the reason that I consider these films as graduated.

Ordered from earliest to latest watched date.
I'm not sure if I'm missing any film.

The second member of something that I called the "Korean trinity", alongside with Park Chan-wook and Lee Chang-dong, and behind Bong Joon-ho. It's a pity that I made the top of his works because he ed away.

I consider that his films aren't for everyone, most of them are about bizarre, obscure and strange relationships, and on recent years, he was more explicit. This is the rank of his films.

This list will be updated as soon as I watch more of his films.

Two new directors will my "fake" directors' league (one of the rules is that the filmmakers must have at least five films, and in my case, there are many with only four films. And this isn't the exception).

This Iranian/Danish filmmaker made some curious and disturbing films, in a different way, not only in the countries, but also in the characters: a Rosemary Baby-esque horror, a dark folk tale, a serial killer, and the origin story of the most polemic character nowadays. So here's my rank.

  1. Immoral Tales

     Week 1: September 2nd-8th
The American History of X Week

    Watched in September 2, 2024

Hollywood has a fickle relationship with the letter X. These days it's a popular (if increasingly uninspired) choice for the rare franchise that makes it to a tenth installment: The Land Before Time, Friday the 13th, The Fast and Furious, and Saw have all adopted the roman numeral. But before this new millennium fad, X meant something very different.

In 1968, in response to the desire for a more faceted system of ratings—and, in its early days, to promote the kind of artistic freedom the Motion Picture Production Code had quashed—the MPAA replaced its "approved" and "not approved" seals with a quartet of letters: G, M, R, and X. The X-rating indicated, simply, that a film was appropriate for adults only.

Soon after, in 1969, Midnight Cowboy burst onto the scene. Worried about exposing youngsters to the film's frank homosexual content and depictions of drug use, United Artists chose to self-apply the X-rating, hoping the choice would not only protect American youth but drum up publicity, too. Because the MPAA had failed to trademark their new content advisory system, everyone from Walt Disney to Gerard Damiano (director of Deep Throat) could slap any rating they wished on their work. And the porn industry wished. Once the floodgates had opened, however, the X-rating didn't last long. By 1973, Hollywood studios had given up on the rating (the adult film industry's tongue-in-cheek co-opting having soured it), and the purveyors of explicit films had done the same, instead preferring to use "XXX" to denote the strength of the adult content in their movies. The X-rating languished in Hollywood until 1990 (although independent and international filmmakers didn't shy away), when the MPAA replaced it with the newly minted—and trademarked—NC-17.

To kick off The Letterboxd Season Challenge's tenth installment (LSC10, incidentally, not LSCX), we take a look back at the original era of X. This week's challenge is to watch a mainstream (non-porn) MPAA X-rated film from the rating's 22-year lifespan, conveniently compiled in this list from C Collins.

    Weekly tag: lsc10 week1

  2. Greta

     Week 2: September 9th-15th
     Anxiety Week

“Anxious-nervous, like he’s dreading it or anxious-excited like he’s looking forward to it?” I, like Nick from The Parent Trap, am anxious-excited for this week. Last year we featured the Polish Moral Anxiety movement, which featured films made in response to real-world anxieties. This year it will be the films themselves that provide the anxiety. Here we celebrate films that get under your skin and keep you on edge, whether it's action, horror, cringe comedy, or, uh, Stuart Little 2 apparently? I haven't seen it but I can only imagine the tension.

This week we invite you to make yourself uncomfortable and watch a previously unseen anxiety-inducing film.

  3. Won't You Be My Neighbor?

     Week 3: September 16th-22nd
     Nicecore Week

    Watched in September 17, 2024

After the stress of last week, let's go the other direction and take it easy with a nice film. Specifically Nicecore, a term I first heard several years ago associated with the release of Paddington 2. “If you’re kind and polite, the world will be right," says the titular bear. In the rather unkind political reality during which the term arose, people looked to the movies for "radical kindness". Although these films are "nice", they can still hold emotional depth, conflict, and complexity. This list is a helpful reference, from Winnie the Pooh to Totoro too.

This week let's celebrate all kinds of kindness and watch a previously unseen Nicecore film.

     Her Dark Material Week

    Watched in September 24, 2024

Are you familiar with Letterboxd 's hyper-specific lists? You know, the ones with weirdly-similar, surprisingly common details shared by two or three otherwise unrelated films? It's too bad there aren't enough options for an LSC weekly challenge. They're inspiring, though, so, in that vein, we'll cast our attention toward a list that goes a bit broader but still feels sufficiently focused. The first shared element for this week's challenge is that the movie be female-led (or the storyline at least female-driven.) Tipping the scales more equitably is something we're interested in here at LSC, and setting our sights on stories about women is a small but conscious step in that direction. Second, there's a twist! Forget light and frothy. Instead, we need something with an undercurrent of darkness, as there's nothing like a streak of controversy to keep things interesting. And, third, let there be LOLs! Laughing has myriad health benefits (it can increase your immune response, for one), and who couldn't be in better health?

Voila! Your challenge this week is to watch a title from Kevin MJ's The Best Female-Led Dark Comedy Films list. It might not carve out as meticulous a nano genre as some others, but it'll give us a wealth of options and hopefully prove as much fun!

     Anders(s)on Week

    Watched in October 4, 2024

If I were in charge of Oscar nominations for 2014 films, my best director lineup would have included Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Paul Thomas Anderson (Inherent Vice), and Roy Andersson (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence). Continuing our recurring theme of similarly named movie people, this year we honor the Anders(s)ons. In addition to the three mentioned above, there's also Brad Anderson and cult favorite Paul W.S. Anderson. There should be plenty of films to choose from with those five, but if there are other Anderson directors out there we'll allow it.

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film by Roy Andersson or Paul, Wes, Paul W.S., or Brad Anderson.

     Strange Beasts Week

    Watched in October 8, 2024

    Minus Color version

An excerpt from "What is Kaiju?", an essay by Kenta McGrath:

Although the origins of kaiju can be traced back to long before Godzilla and indeed, cinema itself, the fact remains that the rise of kaiju in popular culture occurred in tandem with the rise of the kaiju eiga ("Japanese monster movies"). But first, we must be attuned to the fact that the kaiju eiga spans decades, covers many aesthetic trends, and varies widely in its use (and non-use) of allegory and socio-political commentary. It is not static but, like Godzilla, always evolving and adapting, according to when, how, and why it is produced, and who is behind the wheel. As with any genre, it has produced formidable works that will stand the test of time, and forgettable efforts designed to do little more than cash in on what came before it.

Where many saw only the strange, giant monster, others recognized the art and craft behind the strange, giant monster. More than anything else, it is the art of cinema—the combination of image and sound, the collaboration of artists and craftspeople, and the considered use of the resources at their disposal—that allowed the meanings and allegorical potential of kaiju to be articulated in the first place. Beasts, creatures, monsters, and yokai—strange, giant, or otherwise—never needed cinema; it is just one medium in which they have appeared and flourished. Meanwhile, discussing kaiju as separate from cinema seems to me a fruitless exercise. Without cinema, kaiju are relatively unremarkable—just another variation of monsters of which there have been many throughout history.

From King Kong to Clifford the Big Red Dog, the world of kaiju is vast. For this week's challenge, let's focus on the films in David Haddon's What’s That Coming Over The Hill? - Kaiju Films list and bask in the spectacle that decades of gigantic strange beasts on film have wrought.

     Week 7: October 14th-20th
     Indigenous Cinema Week

    Watched in October 15, 2024

Film is a fabulous medium for telling stories; all kinds are possible. Just consider the vast differences between Kill Bill and Portrait of a Lady on Fire or Jaws and Barbie. Our collective exposure to the many distinct narratives, people, and concepts film can convey or embody is staggering. Yet still, we have glaring blind spots. Last year, we took a look at disabled life on-screen. This year, we turn our sights toward another sorely under-represented group in mass media: Indigenous people. These oft-subjugated groups have not only experienced significant tangible and cultural erasure, but their relative absence (aside from racist depictions and stereotypical incarnations) from such a wide-reaching and illuminating form of entertainment further degrades their existence, shoring up myths and assuring their continued marginalization. Exposure via stories about—and especially with the creative involvement of—Native people is one of the keys to ing them in regaining a meaningful, nuanced, representative, and much-deserved place in society.

In that spirit, this week's challenge is to watch a film from degelle's Native, Indigenous, & Aboriginal Cinema list. While sparse, the landscape of Indigenous cinema isn't completely barren, and, encouragingly, it's only grown more verdant as of late.

     Week 8: October 21st-27th
     Alien Encounters Week

    Watched in October 22, 2024

Are we alone in the universe?

Stories about aliens allow us to consider our place in the universe, as humans, with the literal context that there might be beings out there that rival our supremacy. So aliens not only confront us with the humbling idea that humans might not be as big a deal as we like to think of ourselves, but could also offer the hopeful, mysterious, and either comforting or scary idea that there is something more out there to chase after than what our limited experience of life can usually fathom. Thus, alien encounters can serve as the perfect metaphor for a religious or transcendent experience.

So, whether you want to watch people kick some alien butt, chase after their awe-inspiring otherness, or somewhere in between, consider what it would mean to you if there was an entity in the universe that could challenge our notion of superiority by watching a movie featuring aliens. Here is a large helpful list from RJ.

  9. As Above, So Below

     Week 9: October 28th-November 3rd
     Found Footage Week

    Watched in October 28, 2024

Popularized at the turn of the century with The Blair Witch Project, found footage is a genre/style with much older roots than you might expect. In literature we have a "found letters" or "found diary" form in the epistolary novel, which dates back to at least 1684 with Love-Letters Between a Nobleman and His Sister, and horror novels have used the technique from Frankenstein to Dracula to Carrie. The first found footage movie was Shirley Clarke's The Connection from 1961, and Cannibal Holocaust brought the style to horror films in 1980. With low production costs, the potential profit margins are huge, as evidenced by the explosion that followed Blair Witch, most notably the Paranormal Activity franchise. The oft-maligned style spans all genres, from superhero sci-fi to comedy to more recent "screenlife" thrillers where the footage is on computer screens. What will we find this week? This is a fairly exhaustive list.

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen found footage film.

     The Long Take Week

    Watched in November 4, 2024

Elucidation or ostentation? Substance or style? Art or amusement? The best filmmakers presumably revel in these precarious dichotomies as they strive to create something that captures both the singular kind of artistry cinema makes possible and a satisfying measure of meaning to go with it. And happily, what may be the most cinematic tool in a director's arsenal, the long take, when properly employed, can do just that. From Alfred Hitchcock's Rope to the legit one-shot Russian Ark, directors have been pushing film reel capacity and battery life to the limits for decades to bring audiences the special kind of magic only a moving picture can deliver.

This week's challenge is to hang in there with a film from kevinandrewrea3's One/Long take movies list. Whether you settle in for the slow cinema of Béla Tarr (as in Sátántangó) or opt for the intensity of traversing a crowded corridor alongside Oldboy's Oh Dae-su, here's hoping you experience that little jolt of excitement that comes when you bear witness to a captivating—and consequential—long take.

Another one of my favorite female directors.

Her characters are very powerful despite the adversity and bad decisions that they take.
Winner of three Jury Prizes in Cannes, she's another director that enters in my club of directors ranked, and then, another British female director will the club, wait for it...

I'm not sure if I'm going to watch her short films.
