Terry Gilliam's visionary masterpiece of a man trapped in the bureaucrat nightmare is funny, bizarre and creative. The script is filled with hilarious details while we learn about this dark retro futurism society. A denial of errors while literally everything goes wrong and no one can take responsibility without the proper paperwork. This inefficient fascist state is so wrapped up in it's control that the population doesn't even care about the terrorism that's happening all around them. I love the…

Miyazaki at his finest. Watching the newly remastered 4K release in theater is an absolute delight. This film already looks amazing and getting that extra detail heightens it all that much more.
The themes present in much of Miyazaki's work of environmentalism, human's abject cruelty with war and exploitation, and a naturalistic spirituality drive everything in this film. The central conflict of Iron Town and the creatures of the forest sets a clear narrative that our outsider main character moves…

The juxtaposition between Asgard and Earth is so funny, and it feels clunky at times but it's also a bit charming. The Shakespearian performances feel over the top, but I think Kenneth Branagh's direction helps soften it. Kat Dennings is just comic relief, but she charms me with every line she delivers. Branagh's weakness is action, and while he adds melodramatic energy to his sequences, the action is shot boring and slow. Fortunately, the script is funny and silly with it's Marvel pseudoscience and logic.

The story of a boy and his giant robot, this charming tale is filled with mystery and wonder. The antiwar and antiviolence message is clear, but also some deeper thoughts on emotions and authority. The animation is great, with the hand drawn look for everything except the computer animated Iron Giant. The script is funny and quick with lots of cute little moments. One of the best animated films ever made.

A little bit of a slow burn at first, but this stylish samurai western set in 1790s Britain comes out strong once the film starts to get going. Tim Roth leads a group of ruffians whose plunder gets swiped. As they terrorize in search for their lost treasure, young Tornado, a Japanese woman travelling with her father doing a puppet show, gets caught up in the violence and then seeks vengeance. The movie feels like a film from 20 or 30 years ago, with it's lo-fi aesthetic and steady pacing. The movie looks great too, with the country side setting and film grain. Really cool movie.

It definitely feels like they are looking back at the puzzle that is this 30 year long journey of spy thrillers and forcing the pieces to fit. This eighth film completes the epic two part endcap, but it's just a bit messy doing it. The first half of this very long movie is almost entirely an exposition dump, connecting these two movies with everything in the past, cutting between characters to build out a monolog to explain everything. The ominous…
