Primeira meia hora: com vontade de sair da sala; segunda meia hora: a querer queimar todas as praças de touros do mundo com todas as minhas forças; terceira meia hora: a apreciar a forma ridícula como os sidemen do toureiro am todo o tempo a lamber-lhe os tomates (literal, nunca vi um filme com tanta bajulação meta gay sobre os tomates de um personagem); e quarta meia hora: a chorar de raiva, desolação e impotência perante o que estava a ver. 
Se apreciei o filme? Difícil dizer isso quando a violência da morte dos touros é exposta de forma tão crua e brutal, e quando a minha incompreensão sobre o porquê de isto ainda existir tornou-se em militância total anti-touradas. Que é esta a realidade e, como está escrito nos créditos finais, o filme apenas limitou-se a mostrá-la? Não duvido e isso ainda me revolta mais. Se era esse o objetivo? Também não faço ideia, e a julgar pelas conversas que ouvi no final do filme (a idade média da audiência rondava os 70 anos, diga-se), tenho as minhas dúvidas. Mas fica-me o consolo de o toureiro retratado ter odiado o resultado final.

Chorar baba e ranho no final e sair do cinema com um sorriso gigante na cara. Obrigado Andrea Arnold por teres conseguido equilibrar realismo cru e fantasia onírica em doses perfeitas.

Is it too real for us

Kaleidoscopic and dense, mixing documentary and fiction, past present and future, and amazingly rich visual intensity with hallucinating editing. As someone from the audience said in the q&a after the screening, it will take some time to process all the information and stimulus that we were bombarded with. But it sure felt important.

Podem ter demorado mais de 10 anos a montar este filme - segundo Vasco Câmara na sessão de Q&A que se seguiu à sua projeção, este é talvez o mais perto que Portugal tem de um “filme-maldito” - mas o que realmente o torna transcendente é mesmo o seu fabuloso e embriagado trabalho de câmara - impossível chamar isto de “filme teatral” quando a câmara não pára e anda por todo o lado, em movimentos cheios de significado. Fabuloso e embriagado são aliás adjetivos que se aplicam na perfeição a toda esta obra intemporal e, parece-me, zénite de um certo movimento cultural que aconteceu em Lisboa entre finais de 1970s e início de 1980s - e que amava ter vivido.

Que filme lindo, porra. Animals >>> humans, forever. Com aquela vibe de suave apocalipse meio onírico que amo tanto. E ter visto isto na véspera do aniversário do meu pai bateu particularmente duro. 
Also, melhor utilização de uma música dos Pink Floyd na história do cinema.

“Did you cum?”

A movie that touches (literally) many subjects and materials - prosthetics, mechanics, scars, flesh and metal - in the most direct and unsubtle manner, in what can loosely be described as a bonkers tale about the search for the ultimate orgasm. Still as fascinating as ever, in the way it creates a parallel universe and then grabs the viewers by their balls and puts them right in the center of it. 

This time around, even more details emerged for me, like how all characters walk like zombies, adding new layers and subtexts. Perhaps we’re all just bored to our core in these meaningless lives and that orgasm becomes a question of life and death.

“Maybe next time”.

My first X-Men movie and it apparently erases all the timelines built in the previous ones, so I guess I’m not missing anything by not seeing those?

Conciso e extremamente eficaz nos seus twists and turns, com o extra bónus de ter uma certa elegância old-fashioned que só lhe acrescenta ainda mais charme. Also: Cate Blanchett, és um mulherão. Que delícia de filme.

The worst and best of mankind concentrated in 90 minutes and 20 square meters.

So many layers and complexity done in a very balanced way. It’s funny to think that 87 years ago people had a better hold of what nuance is and that things are not only either completely right or completely wrong.

Quando as o filme quase todo a querer esmurrar grande parte das personagens e acabas a chorar baba e ranho no final porque apesar de tudo acreditas no amor entre este pai e este filho.

Um sonho (pesadelo?) febril, com alguns dos enquadramentos e movimentos de câmara mais out-there que já vi. Porque é que são sempre os soviéticos a fazer os filmes mais únicos?

E agora um rant: porque é que as pessoas já não se sabem comportar numa sala de cinema? Ao senhor ao meu lado que ou o tempo todo a ressonar BEM ALTO, prometo que se tivesse ficado em casa, tinha dormido bem melhor. E ao senhor à minha frente que ou o filme todo a rir-se, porque é que vem ver este tipo de filmes se reage assim a tudo o que foge um bocadinho da norma?
Só queria continuar a ver filmes em cinema em paz!

For someone with a bit of ocd as myself, devouring the insane geometry of each frame was immensely satisfactory.

As for the film itself?

I’m deranged

Rewatching this and realizing that growing up and losing loved ones made me also lose all my cynicism, because I was now able to fully see this movie for what it is:
- A delicate, genuine and heartfelt work full of very valuable life lessons given to us in the most tender way (and not preachy at all), showing in full light a unique sensitivity that is always present in his movies but usually a bit more buried;
- A subtle and balanced play with our expectations, not only as for what a Lynch movie can be but also as for what movie watchers in general should expect, period  (e.g.: the scene where the camera first frames the tractor moving, then goes up focusing on the sky, and then goes down again showing us - contrary to one million similar scenes we’ve seen before in other movies - the tractor at almost the exact same place. Pure gold!);
- For the two previous reasons, I’ve discovered today that this is probably the most David Lynch movie David Lynch has ever done.

Best show I’ve ever been to (twice!), she did raise a monument of love.

Well, what can I say? Watching Twin Peaks many years ago altered my brain chemistry forever and made me who I am today, and this movie was its pinnacle, at least until The Return. Seeing it today in the cinema, for the first time after his death, made me really emotional, like watching History unfold in a big screen and being completely swept away by it, with some of the most iconic movie scenes ever to be created (the main theme coming 35 minutes into the film, the final scene and its faith in salvation, and so many more!). So I’ll just leave this with a big Thank You David. You’ll forever be one of my heroes.

Red, metal and fire + the negative version of the Wizard of Oz + Elvis + Lynch at its most visceral = best road movie ever.

Jornada inquietante sobre o oculto e o além, com um uso de sombras e luzes fabuloso. Cinema também é isto: Arte.

Beautifully cursed, I mean, crafted.

Expectation: “this is being praised mostly because of its context and political meaning, I’m sure that with overhype”. 

Reality: has me glued to the chair for its whole 2h47m; the perks of knowing how to tell a good story; not giving the whole 5 stars just because the final act feels a little bit forced in hindsight (even though I do love a good horror atmosphere); VIP (Very Important Picture).

Pretty standard work, which is a bit underwhelming for a movie that wants so bad to portrait Dylan as the myth he may or may not be. But the whole Like a Rolling Stone performance during the electric set had me levitating and just for that I will say it’s worth it.

This probably hit some new brain part in me because even though I found it extremely pointless, it still made me feel comfortable and emotional and, well, more sensitive. 

Also, 1000% visually stunning.

I’m not crying, you’re crying!

(Wasn’t expecting this to be one of the most touching and realistic portraits of New York and friendship - all at once - ever made).

Provavelmente um dos mais completos filmes sobre luto que já vi. Que seja mostrado pelos olhos de uma criança não é mera coincidência. Bonito e devastador (toda a cena da leitura da composição, meu deus…).

Muitas ideias interessantes, tanto visualmente como narrativamente, mas infelizmente o filme perde-se um bocado por ficar demasiado fascinado consigo próprio. Talvez por isso mesmo, não consegui sentir grande emoção com o desenrolar do arco das personagens,

O facto de, na sessão a que assisti, toda a sala ter ficado imóvel e em silêncio durante os créditos finais, a mastigar o que tinha acabado de ver… missão cumprida Sr. Lojkine.

Rewatching this right after his death, probably one of the most intense experiences I’ve had in a theatre.

Não vi os dois anteriores mas sobre este tenho a dizer: FILMÃO.

EDIT: entre o muito de bom que o filme tem, é impressionante como não se levando a sério (e com um sentido de irrisão alucinante), ao mesmo tempo nos envolve tanto, não só nas espetaculares cenas de ação como também nos seus momentos mais emocionais - e foram muitos os soluços que ouvi durante a sessão a que fui <3

Quatro estrelas e um coração porque descobri que o protagonista deste filme é o homem da minha vida <3

A bit less epic and cryptic than I first ed it (ah the perks of growing up), its plot can very loosely be summed up as “lesbian romance goes very wrong”, and I do prefer my Lynch in its more radical form (Twin Peaks: The Return, Inland Empire). Still, a masterclass on filmmaking, in all senses.

Pqp que filme tão bom. Que trabalho de som notável. Que wet dream de simbologias maradas. E que pesadelo para quem precisa de explicações para tudo na vida.

Sometimes you just want to be immersed in a good story and this one does it really well, in 3 hours that by in the smoothest way. The social messages on top (do you prefer to spend 3 years in prison or working for 20 years in a bank?) also don’t hurt.

Coisas que se destacaram num segundo visionamento:

- A construção perfeitamente geométrica: contemplação do ritmo da localidade e das personagens - introdução do glamping como mero Macguffin para melhor explicitar as tensões subterrâneas - o consequente aumento do ritmo nos diálogos - o final. 
- O mal que afinal existe e está sempre presente, mesmo (sobretudo?) naquele que é provavelmente o filme mais “bonito” do Hamaguchi. Não só na música e nos cortes repentinos da montagem a acentuarem um
mal-estar subjacente, mas também em detalhes como os cadáveres dos animais, as plantas venenosas, os caçadores...
- As mensagens políticas, não só anti-capitalismo mas na própria relação de suposta superioridade com que o Homem se vê perante a natureza (em alguns casos, bem subtil: porque razão os veados hão-de mudar de sítio?). 
- O final, nesta segunda vez um pouco menos indecifrável mas mesmo assim totalmente arrebatador (!!).

Visually stunning (I know, I’m stating the obvious), added by a political sub context that leverages this movie above the usual MCU fare. But am I the only one thinking there’s some xenophobia in the way Wakanda and Talokan cultures are portrayed? (Or has my brain just been exposed to Twitter mental diarrhea for way too long in my life?)

With enough gravitas to be pleasantly watchable.

Difficult ranking to make, since he will forever be one of my few heroes and inspirations, and each movie a very important part in his work, but here it is.
