It’s like an episode of Weird Weekends about ex-pornstar drug dealers but Louis has gone home and the cameras keep rolling. Simon Rex acts his dick off between trying to pick up donuts and the pieces of his broken American dream, set against a wasteland of oil refineries that are often so alien they wouldn’t look out of place as matte paintings in the Star Wars prequels. Sean Baker you are America’s great auteur.

There’s a shot in 65 (also in the trailer and poorly recreated in this poster) in which a T rex is revealed by a lightning flash through a waterfall at the mouth of a cave, silhouetting the heroes and containing the frame within the confines of the cave like a prehistoric doorway shot from The Searchers. Christopher Eccleston once said "I like the idea of a writer as intelligent and rigorous as Russell writing for children, because I think if you can get them early with good stuff, they’re going to demand good stuff as they get older."

Christopher Eccleston also once said "Sack Russell T Davies." so I guess that's an accurate reflection on the duality of life and Doctor Who.

The voice of Wallace himself was sat in the row in front of us laughing at all the jokes in Wallace voice and that was just about the most wonderful thing ever.

So Long, My Son

I can’t recommend this highly enough. Might be the single most heartbreaking and human story I have ever seen on film. The design is simple yet genius and the camera work and framing is second to none. Reasserted itself as one of my favourites of all time.
