David Ayer opens up a bold new frontier in negative-IQ film

In part, this film wants to tell the audience that talented people are out there, laboring away in obscure or unexpected fields, and their work is not only worth appreciating, but worth actively seeking out. This is a powerful idea. However, the amount of time this film spends looking at Steve Young's involvement in collecting and enjoying industrial musicals transforms it from a celebration of these artists and craftspeople into more of a celebration of one person's perceived eccentricity.
While a given hobby may be interesting and worth examining, the notion that someone has a hobby is not.
