He made the movie for me, y’all. He said so beforehand.

May 22nd, 1996.  

I started working at the Presidio Northcross 6 that week and the movies playing that week were “Spy Hard,” “Dragonheart,” two screens of “Twister,” and two screens of “Mission Impossible.” I saw the ending of the first M.I. movie so many times in those first few weeks working at the theater, waiting to clean the auditoriums.

Bay of Angels

Hell of an opening shot and I love that recurring piano theme. Gambling addiction and codependency go on an endless vacation to the French Riviera. It’s beautiful, romantic, and depressing in just the right way.  Jeanne Moreau is very striking and compelling.  I wish they would have stretched out the tension a bit more in that final sequence, but I guess if it rings a little hollow, it’s all the better considering the implication.
