Letterboxd Showdown 1: Remarkable Debut

What makes a debut remarkable? Remarkable because it's a great film? Remarkable because you wouldn't expect it? Many debut directors have already been in the business as an actor or writer. Some seem to come out of the blue. To be remarkable, though, a film has to be visually accomplished, well edited, entertaining, and somewhat ambitious. Many first films are perfectly excellent, ordinary films that tell a good story well.
