Concept:
Directed by Alexander Sokurov, this experiment in presenting a single, unbroken Steadicam shot, moves through the rooms of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The film's unnamed contemporary narrator drifts through centuries of Russian history, encountering historical Greats like Peter & Catherine, Tsar Nicholas II, as well as common people from various eras. He is accompanied by a European aristocrat, the "Marquis" - representing 19th-century French diplomat Astolphe de Custine, who serves as a sceptical & often condescending outsider.
