One of the best horrors of the year and easily the bleakest, When Evil Lurks takes the possession subgenre and revitalises it, doing something incredibly different with a tired premise. It isn’t afraid to shock with its horror, violence and gore, and it ensures no one is safe - even the kids. It’s tense, thrilling and crazy, exactly what viewers are looking for in a horror flick. The premise is compelling from start to finish, merging together the possession and zombie sub genres to create something really unique and different, and it races through its perfectly paced 99 minute runtime. The performances are fantastic and natural, particularly from the leads, truly highlighting how humanity wouldn’t know how to react in a situation like this and will do anything to put family first. This comes together with the almost dystopian world-building to create an immersive experience. All technical aspects are there too, from the cinematography to the script, making When Evil Lurks one of the years biggest surprises, especially in the horror genre. The imagery in this film is very memorable, some of the grossest and most frightening we’ve seen all year, and the movie has without a doubt made its mark on the horror genre. Don’t let this one fly under your radar.
