Incredibles 2 biggest problem is that it isn’t Incredibles. But you know what is still rules.

So after a long day of work I decided to heat of a Freschetta Pizza, a brand I don’t often get because they cost so much but they were on sale this week. Anyway I took a bite and had a Ratatouille moment but Ratatouille. Because in 2007 I seeing Ratatouille like six times in theaters and my grandparents use to give me like $20 bucks for snacks and tickets. At that time Harkins had personalized Freschetta Pizza’s which I always got instead of popcorn. I associate that flavor with the opening of Ratatouille so much that eating it tonight brought back memories of being 13 year old in Prescott Valley. So I decided to throw the movie on.

Ratatouille itself, magnificent movie and easily one of Pixar’s best. Wild to think we are as far from this as this movie was from The Little Mermaid.

Welp…that’s disappointing.

Between this, Late Night with the Devil, and In a Violent Nature I think IFC Films (or Independent Film Company I guess?) and Shudder are releasing the best horror movies that are made independently but have a strange mainstream sensibility. These film harken back to big blockbuster horror films but made outside the studio system.

The Phoenician Scheme: Would you like a hand grenade.

Ballerina: Fuck yeah I would.

The final set action set pieces make up for a rough beginning, and Ana de Armas does show that the John Wick franchise can have compelling leads outside its title character. The weakest of the series but 1) the previous films set a high bar and 2) it’s still pretty entertaining.

It owns bones! (No seriously a Predator has a cape made out of spines and I said to myself “is this the greatest movie?”)

This is the Predator movie I think I had been dreaming of since I was a kid, even down to an Predator Ariel dogfight which I know I had in a Predator fan script back in the day.

I had the privilege of seeing this in theaters and I’m so bummed everyone won’t get to experience it that way because this deserves to be seen on a big screen so everyone can cheer “fuck yeah!” when a Predator does a cool ass kill.

A solid entry from Wes Anderson, but it is certainly on the lower end of his filmography for me. It certainly better than Isle of Dogs but this is the first time since then where I left disappointed (though like Anderson movies I do love there is a chance this could benefit from a second viewing).

I’ve really enjoyed a lot of Anderson’s later work, and I found myself loving The French Dispatch and Asteroid City more than most. This however might be where he losses me a bit…just a bit though because the film is still extremely well put together visually and got four real solid laughs out of me. However the comedy here also felt more strained.

The number one rule in improv is “yes and…” because when you say “no” it kills a scene. There are a lot of comedic bits of characters in The Phoenician Scheme where characters do some twist on 

“You did that”
“No I didn’t”
“Yes you did.”
“No I didn’t”
“Yes you did.”
“No I didn’t”

The first time, that’s funny. But by the end of the movie that bit becomes old and you realize how much of the movies comedy is centered on that. Then the emotional beats of the story feel like retreads of similar plots in The Royal Tenenbaums and Asteroid City but with less weight behind them.

In many ways this is Wes Anderson’s take on a 007 movie, which is a cool pitch that somehow manages to be what you expect but also not fully living up to its full potential.

As someone who did not vibe with Talk to Me, I had little to no interest in this film until I saw a friend of mine give it 5 stars on here, and I do have to say Danny and Michael Philippou really do step up their game with their sophomore effort.

There is a visceral tension in this film, where whose atmosphere never lets you get comfortable the entire way through. It grounds its horror in real tangibale relatable elements where the supernatural elements are a light flavor that become scarier the less you know, and the real human horror is out front and center.

A+ sound design and three specific moments made me squirm in my seat and…wait as I was typing this out make that four scenes because I ed one and wanted to gag.

Truly an unpleasant experience and I mean that as a compliment. A good movie I’ll likely never watch again, but I will tell everyone else too.

Honestly pretty solid family film. The biggest issue (aside from some rushed editing) is the legacy sequel aspect of it all. This is clearly meant for a younger audience to get them into Karate Kid, but everytime it tires to cater to the older fans by referencing the original films or Cobra Kai it takes always from the actually fun new spin they are putting on this material.

It’s WILD seeing how young both Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are here.

Seriously a masterpiece of a road trip movie. Love just listening to the conversation and getting to know these characters and just the whole vibe.

I want to imagine the WB executive at the end of this movie thinking “you know what…this guy should do Harry Potter.”

Beautiful (The movie. The people. The food.)

I’ve seen The Final Reckoning compared to The Dark Knight Rises, Avengers: Endgame and Rise of Skywalker to varying degrees…but I think the movie it has the most in common with is Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. In so much that they are both long, bloated, sometimes convoluted, has to wrap up a lot of plot points (and forgets a few) but overall a solid ending for the series with some truly spectacular final action scenes.

With all the flashbacks to other movies (could call this movie 20% old footage) this does feel the most like a series finale, fitting for a movie franchise that began as a series.

While those flashbacks might get tiresome it feels warranted here because they at least acknowledge this is a franchise where nobody actually has cared/ed these movies for the plots or characters for the most part (also super funny for MQ to be like “fan service is toxic” when a good portion of this movie is fan service).

As someone who has enjoyed but never been blown away by this series, maybe the reason I’m more kind to this one is because I didn’t have the highest expectations. I expected to have a good time and I did.

Is it the greatest movie ever? No
But it feels like the greatest movie when you watch it.

What better way to spend a Sunday on Memorial Day weekend than by watching Star Wars and enjoying some BBQ pulled pork.

Richard if you are reading this from the future…never forget the Bacon Grilled Cheese Lays Potato Chips.

The first time Hayley Atwell showed up on screen I think my heart skipped a beat. Has anyone ever looked better on film? I don’t think so.

I’ve seen Rogue One five times.
First was opening day, and I was disappointed.
Second was on DVD in 2017 thinking I would maybe like it more…I didn’t.
Third was in 2020 during the pandemic when I was bored and just did a Solo/Rogue One double feature.
Fourth was in 2022 before Andor debuted, and I telling my roommate “the first half is so boring but man that second half does rule”
The fifth was of course after Andor, since Rogue One is now basically the true series finale.

Rogue One moved up in my ranking after Andor…but not by much. Like how The Clone Wars retroactively added next context to Revenge of the Sith, Andor does the same with Rogue One. Star Wars is probably the franchise that relies the most on DLC patches.

All of the flaws are still present, and the good stuff is still awesome, but Andor gives the events more meaning because I know everything that has led to this.

Rogue One is still one of my least favorite films in the franchise…but I appreciate it more.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is kind of the ultimate Memorial Day Movie. It’s light, harmless, doesn’t add much to Star Wars but cool vibes and is a smaller scale adventure. It’s basically Fast & Furious but in Star Wars and that vibe rules.

While these types of stories have now been mitigated to Disney+, Solo was a story I’m glad I got to see on a big screen.

Look I know I’m in the minority on this one but I think this movie is entertaining but far from the best of the series. The action, top notch. Visually looks great and has this nightmare like quality to it. Henry Cavill reloading his arms? The coolest fucking thing ever.

But this is also to me where the franchises weakness come into play and where the “make up the story as we are filming approach” begins to hurt it. The plot is overly convoluted and you can tell they knew this because the mission briefing dump at the beginning is long. I don’t understand what making The White Widow Max’s daughter ads to the movie other than to add the illusion of continuity to a series that had a loose connection to it in the past.

I like this movie but this isn’t the mission impossible entry I’m bound to revisit multiple times.

One of Disney’s best animated film gets one of its worst remakes.

It really does give me no pleasure to say this is bad. I love the original Lilo & Stitch, the animated series was one of my favorites growing up, and Marcel the Shell With Shoes On was one of my favorite films of 2022 so when Dean Fleischer Camp was announced as the director I was so excited this could be good.

The finished result though is a mess, with come creative choices have major ripple effects on the story and themes that I’m honestly baffled by. For as protective as Disney tends to be with some of their properties I can’t believe they were okay with some of these changes. I guess good for them but also changes need to be warranted.

The only good things I can say is the young girl who played Lilo is fun, and the decision to actually have her behave like a 6 year old instead of having the young actress try to recreate the originals performance which was designed for a cartoon works in the movies favor. Also Stitch is great, kind of hard to mess him up. 

But yeah…what a disappointment.

A perfect movie.

The best and most relatable one because the main character basically is the audience and sees potential absurd deaths EVERYWHERE.

Think I screamed “oh fuck!” like 3 times. Great time.

Look it’s not my fault the best Final Destination movie also happens to be the one I saw first and the one that has Mary Elizabeth Winstead in it. That’s just how life works sometimes.

No one ever drove behind a car with logs or anything hanging out of a truck bed the same after watching this movie.

This is the best Mission: Impossible film right?

To this day I can still hear my uncle’s terrified gasp when Tom Cruise hits his head when trying to jump through the window and nearly falls.

I often go to 7-11 late at night and I’m prepared for Billy Crudup to be there.

Also you think Ethan Hunt grabbed a slurped or a Big Gulp on his way out with his mission briefing?

I thought this was really charming and delightful!

I love a good “dudes in suits talking in a room movie.”

Not going to lie I’m a bit let down. This really does have “first movie energy” and has no momentum, scenes meander on in that very mid 
2010’s “mumblecore/quirky” way that very few movies successfully were able to pull off.

No even Zosia Mamet charm can carry this.

Really hoping for more out of “Oh, Hi!” later this summer.

So May 6 is strange in of the MCU, as three different movies opened on that day in different years (Thor in 2011, Captain America: Civil War in 2016, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022) all representing different points in the franchise life cycle and how audiences engage with them. I wanted to tackle my own feelings about this sort of shift in the MCU, so I put on Thor and Multiverse of Madness on in the background while I worked, because these are both 3 star movies that for the most part work but also have some issues, though I hand a stronger affinity for Thor even though Multiverse of Madness is arguable a stronger movie. (I know Civil War still rips).

As part of Marvel’s first wave of movies back after COVID, there were a lot of expectations put on this film. This movie has a dope beginning and a fantastic final set piece, but that middle half is the less enjoyable on rewatch. Not so much the same reasons fans have because they “wasted” the Illuminati, Sam Raimi going full Raimi on them and killing them rules.

This, like the Marvels, is best enjoyed as viewed like a specific storyline in a comic. A solid six issue run that is just a Doctor Strange adventure.

Much like Thor, I’m sure as time goes on the fond memories I associate with this one. But this, like a lot of the 2022 MCU entires, is sort of tinged by a sense of sadness as I can track the crumbling of a relationship over the course the various entries. The MCU, and myself got older and therefore more complications come with it.

I think the biggest thing for Thor, and a large portion of bias older MCU fans need to acknowledge is that is it so much the MCU changed or we did?

I was 17 when this came out, and I have fond memories of it that are hard to separate. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks in high school because of a stomach complication and the first thing I did when I got out was see Thor the Sunday it opened (I forgot to take my hospital arm band off so the ticket taker looked very concerned). My girlfriend senior year and me started dating because this movie and she wanted to talk Marvel with someone. My mom got me this and Captain America to watch as a reward after the SAT. This was when the MCU at the start, and the world was filled with possibility. I was young and had the world to look forward too.

Obviously a lot changed in 11 years (and now 14 years from its release). I’m older…not wiser but maybe a little more cynical? I still try to remain optimistic and I still look forward to every MCU movie (catch me going nuts for Fantastic 4) but also part of understanding the feeling of “MCU fatigue” or older millennials maybe feeling burned out by the franchise has less to do with the quality of the movies themselves and more the realization we can never go back to that feeling when it was shinny and new. Thor is far from a perfect movie, but I can’t help but smile when I watch it and look back at the young man who was so desperate to get out of the hospital just to see the newest Marvel movie.

What the fuck you mean it’s been 10 years?!

In the tradition of The Muppets, Spider-Man, and Vscation…for the sequel we go international.

Kind of has the issue that a lot of comedy sequels do of repeating bits from the first one but not as well, but I had an okay time watching it. Blake Lively is great in this role and Anna Kendrick, I mean come on what more can I say?!

Although note to producers…stop trying to make us believe Anna Kendrick is “plain.” Dress her in all the baggy graphic tees and sweats you want but it’s still Anna Kendrick.

May the 4th viewing.

Did I plan to see this movie 3 times in one weekend?
No

But when three sets of friends ask if I want to go I say yes.

Look I was removed from the MCU Tumblr ship wars of the Infinity Saga days…but I’m not the only one picking up a thing between Ghost and John Walker right?

Just me? Okay then.

Got in the last IMAX screening at City Walk and man when that aspect ratio expands you could feel the air leave the theater.

Is this the best ending scene for an MCU movie? I think so.

Well this was a blast. While it might be a little heavy on exposition, it manages it more organically than Captain America: Brave New World did.

I’m on record for having been open to the idea of Thunderbolts but also skeptical, given that none of these characters were my favorite or ones I was desperate to see again. Yet the key to the MCU’s longevity has been its characters and making seemingly forgettable characters pop, and Thunderbolts takes these b-list characters and makes them a-listers.

A lot darker than I was expecting, one where the movies villain is a literal manifestation of depression and ennui and how it can seem all consuming.

One note I love was the emphasis on saving civilians, something the MCU has sort of forgotten about in recent years. Particularly love the idea of putting characters known for being killers in positions where they have to save people, showing they are more than the worst things they think about themselves.

This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. In 2005, I was so obsessed with Star Wars that my parents took me to the midnight showing, my first one, because they were like “he is never going to get the chance to see another new Star Wars movies again” (time makes fools of us all). I saw this movie 7 times in theaters back in 2005, the most I saw any movie for its first run in a theater and is now only tied with The Avengers.

Sitting there, at the AMC Burbank 16 I was transported to that feeling of being a kid again where Star Wars was the greatest thing ever. I also was reminded of just how many toys from this movie I owned and am bummed I lost so many of them through various moves. Even eating M&M’s captured that vibe because they had the cool Darth Vader commercial at the time.

Honestly the only thing that sucked about my screening this time was the assholes who decided to cheer when Anakin ignited his saber at the kids (because these people are the fucking worst and think they are so funny).

A perfect comedy.

Seeing this with an audience was awesome because when Mr. Darcy called Elizabeth “Mrs. Darcy” they erupted in cheers like Maverick pulling off the impossible flight pattern in Top Gun: Maverick.
