I had no idea what this film was about going into it. The title intrigued me, I hadn’t even seen a trailer for it. This is exactly how I like, how I prefer, to see a movie the first time: knowing as little about it as I can. The cinematography is gorgeously intimate. The performances are subtle and nuanced. The songs are rich and sweet, poignant and catchy. This was an absolute joy to watch. A brilliant film of complex emotions and vibrant personalities. I just wish it had been longer. Like another little mermaid, I just wanted more.

Definitely derived from a work by William S Burroughs. Wild and trippy period piece with music which is so anachronistic that it only adds to the surreal dreamlike quality of the whole experience. CGI backgrounds that look painted, or is it painted backgrounds that look CGI - again this just adds to the whole thing being a drug induced fever dream. Yep, William S Burroughs.

So this is a great episode. A brilliant ending for a spectacular season. I was so happy to see Anita back, I literally screamed. And I really have nothing to complain about … except Ncuti Gatwa’s departure. I’m more than a little pissed about this. Gatwa was brilliant as The Doctor. The seasons were too short, but otherwise I adored his performance. Definitely one of my favorites. Not sure what to make of the new person, as they’re coming aboard the TARDIS with baggage so to speak. On one hand, I’m rather hoping that we will have a holiday special and then that will result in “fixing” all the stuff broken and misaligned since The Doctor and Donna screwed up with Isaac Newton and created Mavity, with the resultant need for a degeneration back to Gatwa for next season. But I do want this to be more than just stunt casting. On the other hand, I feel like it’s all being set up for a sort of reunion of the 14th and 16th Doctors. I mean, at this point how can we not.

Lots to process! Again! How did this all happen? How do The Rani survive? How did she create this Wish World? Why this particular warped reality? Omega? Here we go again! Interesting in all this as it was implied that the new Disney+ series was another soft reboot, but there so much calling back to classic Who in this season that it feels like it’s never ended. Rogue! Susan! UNIT! Ruby! Belinda! The Rani! Omega! Well, the one thing this new Disney+ version of Doctor Who has been remains intact. And that is it is unpredictable. The final ending is more than a bit disappointing, so we’ll have to see where this is going. It seems we’re headed back to David Tennant eventually at this point, one way or another, it is now inevitable. And RTD has definitely set that up. Will it get wrapped up in a holiday special? Or will it take a season to … fix this? So The (Sixteenth) Doctor goes looking for The (Tenth) Doctor and finds The (Fourteenth) Doctor. Do we get Rogue as a companion during this? Where’s Susan? What’s going on with that? Will they ever fix the “Mavity” problem (yes, we’ve been a smidge out of sync with reality since that happened)? Where is all this headed now?

Based on a documentary that focuses on the rescue of a downed diver in the North Sea, this film is a little too homogenized and glossy for its own good. Solid performances and some really nice cinematography don’t really add much to a script strained to keep things moving for longer than the rescue took. Good, but not great.

This is not quite a found footage type of film, but it has some similarities. It is also not quite a haunted house type of movie, but there are definitely similarities. It is certainly not a time travel thriller, but there are some elements that are very reminiscent. It certainly has nothing in common with main stream horror films since this is a slow build and is really about the characters, not about body count or gore. In that respect there are similarities to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Definitely a lot of Shyamalan influences going on here. There is even some nods to the film Here. But this is still a remarkably unique and original film, in no small part to the way the cinematography is handled, and that is what makes this film work.

A friend recommended this to me. I mean, it’s Clive Barker so I’m sure it’s at least entertaining. It starts off very promising, but goes down hill really fast. Unfortunately, the CG effects are awful. I kept trying to talk myself out of this observation by reminding myself it was released in 2008. But they’re just so video game quality that it’s laughable. The characters are fleshless and uninteresting. It just gives me the feeling that Barker may not translate well into movies.

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. The first half of the film is - well, it’s tedious. I got just a bit over half way through and was ready to completely give up on it. I shut it off walked away and was pretty much done with it. The cinematography is nice, the music is good, the editing is fine, but the characters are all ill conceived, poorly written, and clumsily performed. And the world building is nothing but a social commentary extrapolation of today’s screwed up Republican Party. Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of a combination of Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush (take your pick, or even both), and First Lady Donny the whiney toddler is probably the most uninspired performance of his career. Toni Collette pulls off her role as the power behind the throne, but she far too underutilized until the second half of the film, and there she really shines. I’m adding an entire star to my rating just for her. And after I decided to go ahead and finish watching the film, as I had already gotten half way through it, I discovered that things did eventually get a bit more interesting. But far too little and far too late in the film. Unfortunately not even Collette could salvage anything from Robert Pattinson’s performance as the titular protagonist, which is, unsurprisingly, underwhelming. Honestly, the native creatures of the planet are the most interesting thing in the entire movie. So I’d only give this 2-stars, but I’m giving it 3 just for Collette being as awesome as she always seems to be.

Okay, let’s start with the big monkey in the room. Yes, I know this is NOT a Planet of the Apes movie, but it’s got a bloody talking (and singing) monkey for f#cks sake! His stage persona, and what he becomes as his career progresses, was a party animal, so it all rather makes undeniable sense. Seriously though, can we move on now? The big number two for me is: I’ve never been a fan of musicals, except those that are more fantasy or wish fulfillment than about trying to have some street gang sing and dance about how tough they are. But that appears to be changing for me, I seem to be gaining a greater appreciation for musicals as I get older. Although it is also about the types of music being used (and about the relevance of the material I suppose), and more recent musicals are not afraid of using popular music instead of the traditional style of show tunes. And then there’s my third issue with this particular movie: while I have a faint recollection of Take That, I really have only the vaguest memory of Robbie Williams. Neither were quite to my tastes back in the day. This is all to say that I have no investment in the story of this particular “famous person.” I’m not really sure why this film caught my attention. Well, no, I’m lying there. As soon as I saw the previews with a talking and singing monkey I was interested. I am, after all, a HUGE fan of Planet of the Apes (except that awful one by Tim Burton, what a mess). Even though I could barely recognize Robbie Williams from any John, Harry, or Dick (or hairy dick for that matter), the Ape element is what made me really want to see this. I was really interested in seeing if they could actually pull off such a conceptual gimmick. As for the film? Great. Very entertaining. Fantastical musical numbers. The cinematography is a brilliant blend of the whimsically ethereal and a kind of gritty English realism. Sequences move from scene to scene in a dreamlike train wreck that keeps your attention. The whole film is a juxtaposition of the surreal and a harsh reality of stuff that has been done before: early success, some really dark times, addiction, depression, self-destructive behavior, and even fighting his inner demons (depicted literally) of self doubt, self hatred, self ridicule, etc. and then how he reconciles with himself. Cliched musical biopic on a singer I barely anything know about? I’ll skip. But the whole monkey gimmick makes the otherwise clichéd narrative work. It grabs you by a chokehold to the throat in the first moments and doesn’t let go until the credits roll. Basically: your ass is Robbie’s for two hours and you WILL be entertained.

First rewatched, and my original review stands: Well, no surprise that the anti-woke losers are savaging a film with a person of color as the lead, a person of color as the sidekick, and a big red monster as the president. Yep, no surprise that the MAGA crowd doesn’t like this one. Yawn, you people are tedious, too sensitive, too fragile, and just plain deplorable.
For me, this is another fun superhero thrill ride. The narrative picks up threads from The Eternals, The Incredible Hulk and, of course, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We get more information on the transformed and deceased Celestial, the introduction of adamantium, a new Falcon, several new villains, the return of Isiah Bradley, and a new Hulk. The whole thing is woven together quite nicely, not as tight as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but still lots of fun. What’s not to enjoy? Yeah, Sam Wilson is not Steve Rogers. And you know what? I couldn’t be happier about that.

I thought I’d seen this before, but I think I may have only seen clips of it somewhere. Or, if I had seen it, I seem to have blocked most of it from my memory. And perhaps I can now understand why. First off, this is an excellent movie. The premise is farcical, but the resulting emotional journey is far from that. They are some truly devastating moments in this narrative, even though the overall tone is fairly light-hearted. If it sounds complicated, it is. Subtle performances, nice cinematography, human relationships are center stage, it all adds up to be a beautiful family drama. But it is also mired in the early 90s mentality in which it was made, so it does feel dated, but not quite so much that it becomes a “period piece.”

Not quite hitting the mark for comedy, but too light for just labeling this film as a drama. It walks a fine line between the too. And it walks a fine line on social commentary as well. But then that is exactly what the film is trying to do. The film flips racial expectations on their butt, but it also flips gender expectations there as well. A family moves from the Brooklyn to a suburban small college town in Washington state. Once there, removed from their comfortable backgrounds, the seems start to show as the family encounters the subtextual racism inherent in suburban small college towns across the US. The whole thing is pointlessly trivial and utterly believable. Excellent performances from the leads, some nice cinematography that illustrates the unobtrusive nature of living in a suburban small college town. This film should be hitting all the buttons, unfortunately it doesn’t. Nothing quite works, the dysfunction to which the family succumbs is the same that the audience feels. The filmmakers, perhaps, did their job of conveying that dysfunction a bit too well. Still, it’s a good film that moves at an almost glacial pace, allowing plenty of time to understand the weight of each scene.

While superficially entertaining, there is little substance to this glossy overview of the development of the Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The biggest problem though, at least for me, is how Jack Kirby is presented as little more than and assistant to Stan Lee in the early years of Marvel as covered in the first episode. That really set the tone for me, and it was not a good tone at all. Rather like ordering a big juicy steak and getting it, only to find that the side facing you looks to be full of meat. But when you flip it over, the other side is nothing but fat and gristle. Presentation is everything, except when you find out theres very little meat to go with your potatoes and broccoli.

Anyway, classic Monty Python comedy. Great stuff. This is kind of a hybrid film. It has clips of interviews with people who were there interspersed with the fictionalized footage of the events. I’m guessing that the intent was to add authenticity to the narrative in order to draw the viewer into the lives of the characters, but it actually has the opposite effect. These commentary segments end up being distracting and pulling the viewer out of the story. The performances are fine, there’s a lot of heart felt warmth from the entire cast. It is as if they wanted to give everything they had to the film, unfortunately the portrayals feel a bit too characterized, a bit too rehearsed. I also found it a little hard to believe that the kid loses his pants and his shoes fall apart in the first 24 hours, but he keeps his boxer shorts intact through all nine days of his ordeal. I mean, I suppose that’s what happened, but it’s actually really difficult to accept. Lovely cinematography. Nice music. And one last comment, I could not help but find myself thinking of the book by Stephen King The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon which a simpler premise. I’m left wondering how much of this story inspired King to tell his. In the end, it’s not a great film, but certainly one that a lot of young teens could benefit from watching.

From a historical or biographical standpoint this film is ludicrously inaccurate. But what gets me is that several of these songs really speak to me, or rather sing to me. Those songs (not all of them) would get a 5-star rating from me, and if you watch the bonus feature version that is just the music and only the music, it’s brilliant and wonderful. And so many of the songs are easily interpreted as LGBTQ+ themes. Unfortunately the rest of the narrative drags the film down. Still it’s very entertaining.

Fascinating look at the history of the US through a slightly different lens. While history is pretty clear that Nixon was a criminal, Ford was an incompetent tool, but the war crimes of Reagan, Bush, and Shrub (aka Bush 2) are laid bare. But it doesn’t stop there. The narrow minded shortsightedness of Truman, Johnson, Clinton, and Obama are also examined. It is also refreshing to see someone actually talk about how the military industrial complex basically owns the government and controls the decisions that are made. At least most of the time. Sadly it ends in 2012, while Obama was still in office, so we don’t get anything about the absolutely most incompetent and treasonous president of them all.

Surprisingly, even worse than the first one. The filmmakers did the typical sequel cliches of reusing the previous film’s plot and doubling down on all the worst aspects of the original. I don’t even think I can stomach trying to watch the next two films in this franchise.

Episode 1: Brilliant. Powerful. Amazing performances from the entire cast. Excellent. (4.5/5)

Episode 2: Wow, what a mess. After how good the first episode was, this was just chaos. Perhaps the filmmakers were just illustrating how the case against Jamie was floundering, or perhaps they were trying to depict life in a school. I’m not really sure, but for me the performances were all over the place and very uneven. Some people were believable, others were ludicrously bad. The whole episode was too performed and frankly unbelievable. (3/5)

Episode 3: Wow. Just, wow. That has got to be the single most powerful episode on any series I have ever seen. I don’t know if I can ever sit through that again. Shit that felt real. Seriously. (5/5)

Episode 4: Another powerful and emotional episode. Absolutely phenomenal camera work. Brilliant performances. (4/5)

Aside from the second episode, which just felt staged and artificial when compared with the rest of the episodes, this series is astonishingly good. Brilliant performances. Astonishing camerawork.

Not what I was expecting at all. This is not a glorification of war, nor is it a condemnation of war. This is a realistic portrayal of how war effects even those who are not combatants. Gorgeous and lush locations, with simple but effective cinematography, further sets this film apart from the usual films depicting warfare. Nicu, the film’s central character, is not worldly, he lives a simple life in the forests of mountainous Romania. But when his beloved horses are stolen by Nazi soldiers, he sets out to get them and get them to safety. But the war keeps coming back into his life in increasingly disastrous ways. These events change him and set him in direct conflict with his past. A beautiful and troubling film.

There was a tendency in the 80s and 90s to make queer films that didn’t offer much the way of validation. One the love interests would change their mind, or reveal they were just experimenting. I feared this was going to be like those films. So, while it is not exactly a happy ending, the teens part as friends. We’ve come a long way. And yet we still have so far to go. This is a breath of fresh air against the stranglehold that toxic white men with savior complex have on the entire revenge genre of action films. I am absolutely sick of the cliched troupe of white-hetero-man-can-do-no-wrong-and-everyone-else-in-the-world-is-an-incompetent-buffoon. This works because Rami Malek is a brilliant actor and the casting department did a fantastic job. If you’re wanting to see yet another non-stop action piece of shoot-em-up spy thriller, don’t bother seeing this. You’ll be disappointed. If you are exhausted with that kind of film and want something more mature but still have that hero-gets-even mentality - well, then this is exactly what you’re looking. If you’re one of those fragile toxic masculine bro-dudes, go watch Tom Cruise pretending to be tough or Jason Stratham in yet another mind numbing piece of trash, this is not for you.

I am a self identified POTA aficionado. I love all things POTA. The movies. The TV shows. The comic books. The books and novelizations. It’s all just apey-goodness to me. But this particular film is … well … it’s terrible. Between making Helena Bonham Carter somehow look like Janet Jackson (yeah that’s not racist at all) and Mark Wahlberg’s laughable attempts at acting, this film is an unintentional tragedy of cinematic proportions. Between the ludicrous narrative and the terrible script, this is nightmarish cluster f*ck. And don’t even get me started on the way they launched ape actors through the air. What the holy hell are you people thinking? If you’re trying for camp you missed the target by about an astronomical unit (that’s about 93,000,000 miles you dim witted goons). This wasn’t the first Tim Burton film I was disappointed with, but it’s the first one that made me question both his drug use and his sanity. And I did lose an enormous amount of respect for him as a director. The production of this film is just one bad decision after another.

While not as good as either of the previous films in this trilogy, this is still a fine entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise. But like some of the other films, I feel like it’s a little misnamed. This one should have been either something like The Great Ape Escape (although that is too cheesy and doesn’t use the Planet of the Apes title formula necessary for the franchise) or maybe Exodus on the Planet of the Apes. In any case, this wraps up the Caesar trilogy and it’s a fitting, if slightly predictable and more than a bit cliched, combat movie. The only thing that makes it work is the presence of the Apes. If this was just a human vs human combat film, it would have been terrible.

When I first saw this in the theater, I had some trepidations. I absolutely love the original classic sequence of POTA films. I also really enjoy the TV series. But the Burton reboot film was so bad, I feared that the franchise was going to end there. This film goes where no other POTA has gone before. And it does so in ways that almost make it not even a POTA film. Almost. The Burton film may have been a reboot, but Rise is a cinema masterpiece that completely reconceptualizes the concept, removing the fantastical elements, making the core concept believable and even topical. This is science fiction at its best.

Ever once in a while I take a chance and watch some typical macho action flic just to see what the stoic incels are into these days. And is definitely what they would seem to be enjoying. White savior mentality. Messiah complex. Tough guy with a loyal heart fantasy. This is some truly moronic dumb ass shit. This will definitely appeal to the generation of boys raised on Wolverine comic books. “I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn’t pretty.” Yes, Wolverine you’re such an badass. Too bad you can’t seem to convince yourself of that. Every single person in this film is a complete feckless idiot, no one is at all capable of making a smart or rational decision. Not a single person. Except, of course, for our dear white savior macho male lead who is cleaning house and taking names. And he, of course, doesn’t make a single mistake. This was a completely ludicrous and absurd film that deserves to be forgotten as soon as it’s over and hopefully that will happen to me. All I want to is that I’ve seen it so it won’t rewatch it at some point in the future. So why didn’t I give this garbage a half-star? Well, it is decently made. The filmmakers did put together a nice looking film. The story is manure that stinks like only dog shit can, but it is mindlessly entertaining and kept me interested. If for no other reason than to see if my predictions for where the whole thing was going was actually going to go there. And yes, there wasn’t a single surprise or twist that wasn’t easily predictable. So, they writers did follow through on everything I expected. Unfortunately, that also makes for a rather boring film. Still, it’s better than most Zack Snyder movies, I suppose.

While not the worst of the Planet of the Apes films, it does add a lot of the franchise while simultaneously wreaking havoc with the basic concept. This has to be one of the single most bizarre and unusual sequels ever made. Usually sequels try to rework the success of the original, which this one does, by taking the successful components and just repurposing them. But here a brand new threat is introduced in the appearance of telepathic humans. The addition of this human mutant faction dilutes the impact of the entire premise, but it also allowed for the development of the entire concept to evolve and change through three subsequent sequels as well as a fairly successful comic book magazine series. Additionally, it is worth noting that while this is the only one of the classic film series in which Roddy McDowall does not appear (David Watson portrays Cornelius this time), he is still included via archival footage reused from the first film.

Well, the toxic fanboy turd-heads are being true to form: review bombing anything that doesn’t conform to their narrow, ignorant point of view. In contrast, this is a fun spinoff from Star Trek Discovery (another wonderful Star Trek gem that gets review bombed) that continues plot threads left dangling from that series when the vessel was stuck several centuries in the future. It does a nice job playing in the franchise sandbox, without appearing to the usual restrictions. Lots of frenetic, and very unusual, camera work for anything Star Trek related. But it’s actually works, like the Dutch angles used in the classic Batman series, to convey that this is not the usual Star Trek narrative. The actors are clearly having fun with there parts and the whole larger-than-life, and off-the-wall production feels, at least in some ways, to have more inspiration from The Fifth Element than from the Star Trek franchise. Not the greatest Star Trek film, but certainly leaps and bounds better than the disappointing films helmed by JJ Abrams. Definitely fun and entertaining.

Films that prominently feature a holiday … or maybe even two.

  1. Coco

Dia de los Muertos aka the Day of the Dead

  2. The Holdovers

    Xmas & New Year’s

  3. Hawkeye

    Xmas Marvel Style

  4. Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol

Xmas, as it says in the title

  5. Doctor Who: Last Christmas

    Again, Xmas in the title

  6. Something Wicked This Way Comes

Not technically a Halloween film, but close enough

  7. Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road

    Xmas special

  8. The Nightmare Before Christmas

I think of this as a Thanksgiving movie, as it’s AFTER Halloween and BEFORE Christmas

  9. Die Hard

It’s wouldn’t be Xmas without Die Hard

  10. Doctor Who: Joy to the World

    Xmas
