A wild descent into drugs and murder, played through the unearned arrogance of private schoolboys. Strong performances across the board ground what could have otherwise been an overcrowded story. Thankfully, it always lingers just this side of far-fetched. Brutal viewing.

1. 50 years ago, John Waters filmed a drag queen eating literal dog shit off the pavement in the deeply conservative suburbs of Baltimore. That should be the baseline for transgressive cinema, let alone transgressive queer cinema - if your film isn't equal to or more shocking than that, you're not shaking anything up. The world's most unrateable movie. Could not wipe the smile off my face the entire time - incredibly entertaining, astonishingly surreal, and had all the stunning visual flair of the silent German masters, like Murnau and Lang. The editing, visual effects and a good chunk of the highly stylised performances were world class, and hopefully get the recognition they deserve. I absolutely loved the experience and I am so glad it exists.
