The top 100 films I saw for the first time in 2015.
From The Rover to Prince of Darkness, I watched 249 feature films for the first time in 2015, including old and current/recent releases. That equates to about 4.8 films a week, in total 95 down on 2014, and 13 down on 2013.
The films ranked here were the cream of the crop. 10 or so are in my all-time list or thereabouts, although none were able to crack my Top 50 all-time. The bottom of this selection also dips into 3.5 stars, which is a new low for my yearly reviews. Some months also barely made a dent (December has one single entry in the 80s), and one…

The bottom of this selection also dips into 3.5 stars, which is a new low for my yearly reviews. Some months also barely made a dent (December has one single entry in the 80s), and one of these films is technically a feature-length TV pilot (Crime Story). A third of these films were from the Asia-Pacific region. I had never even heard of Whit Stillman prior to 2015, so he would have to be my find of the year.
Projects I pursued in 2015: March Around the World challenge, Australian cinema history, Ealing Studios
Director with the most films in this list: Hou Hsiao-Hsien (4)
HM: The Addiction
I also watched at least a score of outstanding short films, but was particularly enraptured with the works of Albert Lamorisse and Bruno Bozzetto (who I had never previously heard of). The picks of the bunch were The Red Balloon, White Mane & Life in a Tin, all of which would easily make my top 30 here.
2016 will be less active in of first viewings (planning to devote more time to other interests), but I look forward to discovering countless more cinematic treasures and delivering sporadic reviews. Happy hunting LBers!
