I've been watching Season 2 of The Rehearsal and Nathan Fielder’s crew has constructed a scale replica of The Houston Airport in three massive warehouses in California, from expansive concourses and fully stocked shops, to restaurants and bars that actually serve food and drinks. The amount of resources he wastes for the purpose of staging trivial pre-enactments is the root of the comedy. The excess is the joke.

I was really enjoying the show, but after watching No Other Land... it may be hard to get back into.

I watched The Legend of Ochi yesterday and it wasn’t until literally the final shot that I thought, “Wait a second… did I just fall in love with this movie?”

I’d felt flutters throughout the runtime, but nothing I’d define as love. The sensation threw me. I was aware of the film’s lukewarm reception going in and wondered if that hadn’t compromised my viewing experience. What was the source of this inner conflict? Why did I feel like Lisa Simpson falling for Nelson Muntz?

So I talked my wife and daughter into watching it with me this morning and from the opening shot I was smitten. I synced up immediately with the quirky tone, something I’d struggled to get a handle on the first time through, and embraced the film wholeheartedly, warts and all. I’m not sure I understand, even now, why it took a second viewing to confirm this for me, but the conflict is gone.

To paraphrase Lisa Simpson: “It’s like a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a furry blue monkey.”

I love this movie.

Mountainhead is a little snowball rolling down a slope, growing in size as it goes, building and building into something truly magnificent before veering off course and crashing into a tree.

My junior year, I moved into my aunt and uncle’s house in the big city. My cousin Michelle, a popular cheerleader, took me under her wing and helped me make some friends. For a little while, I felt like a shiny new penny.

One night while working at the movie theater, one of Michelle’s fellow cheerleaders, Carrie, came in to say hello and to introduce me to her quarterback boyfriend, Jimmy. Jimmy seemed like a nice fellow upon approach, smiling amiably, but as we were shaking hands, it became painfully evident that Jimmy felt threatened by me. His eyes narrowed, his nostrils flared, and his grip tightened to the point I thought my bones would snap, all while Carrie stood by, oblivious. When he finally released my hand his smile twisted in a grinch-like sneer and he said with a cheerful lilt: “Gosh, Christian, it’s so nice to finally meet you! Carrie here just can’t seem to shut up about what a swell guy you are!”

For the rest of the night and into the next day I was livid! What an asshole! I imagined confronting Jimmy a hundred different ways and began plotting my brutal and unsparing vengeance. This punk obviously didn’t know who he was dealing with. I was an orange belt in Ryukyu Kempo! My body was practically an unlicensed weapon! Oh, I’d wipe that smile off his face, all right. When I was finished with poor Jimmy's smile he’d need a straw to suck his food through it!

At around noon, Carrie popped over to the house… with Jimmy in tow. I was sitting in the kitchen, still seething, when they came in. This is it, Christian! This is your chance to show that son of a—-

And then Jimmy stepped into the kitchen and said to me, “Oh, hey Christian. I am soooo sorry dude. I was being such an asshole last night.” He turned to Carrie and Michelle. “Yeah, I was acting all fake and squeezing his hand really tight, trying to get into some kind of lame pissing contest or something, I don’t know. Jealous boyfriend bullshit. I feel so embarrassed.”

He reached out and grabbed my hand again, this time holding it almost tenderly. He gave me a brotherly pat on the shoulder and looked right into my eyes: “Really, man. I’m sorry.”

“What? Why? What?” I reeled, genuinely confounded. “I just thought you had a nice, firm handshake. No need to apologize, dude.”

And that’s how Jimmy and I became pals.

On Christmas morning, 1985, my brothers and I were surprised to find that Santa Claus had brought us the Transformers Constructicon Devastator set (surprised, because earlier that summer our dad had found the stash of Playboys we’d hidden in the clubhouse—I guess Santa forgot to check his list twice that year). 

For those unversed in 80’s culture, the Constructicons were six different construction vehicles that not only transformed into individual robots but combined to form The Mighty Devastator! The line was basically a knockoff of Matchbox’s impressive Voltron figure, released the previous year, but by virtue of the Transformers branding, the Constructicons were equally revered among kid-dom. (I wish we’d owned Voltron, because the metaphor I’m setting up here would work better with five figures combining to form one, but we didn’t, so let’s just work with what we’ve got.)

All right, before I lose you (if I haven’t already) let’s go ahead and bring in that metaphor:

Daniel Craig’s Bond arc is The Mighty Devastator, with the sum of its parts, i.e., the Constructicons, coming together to form an indomitable whole. Of course, there are undisputed favorites, like Scrapper (the leader and front-end loader) and Bonecrusher (the bulldozer), but without every Constructicon, without Long Haul (the dump truck) and Scavenger (the excavator), and even less popular vehicles like Mixmaster (the concrete mixer) and Hook (the crane), The Mighty Devastator wouldn’t be so mighty.

So you’re not a fan of Quantum of Solace. I get it, not everyone’s into cement mixers, but we’re talking about the left leg here. Kind of an important part! Without that , The Not-So-Mighty Devastator is in serious danger of collapse, its strength critically diminished. 

Each Constructicon is ESSENTIAL to the integrity of The Mighty Devastator. Sure, you can play with them on their own; collect only the vehicles you like and forget about combining them to form the complete whole, but you’d be cheating yourself of a grand vision. When ed together, they are more than a cement mixer, more than a crane…

More than meets the eye.

I don’t envy the short straw who had to tell Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood that their theme song submission for Spectre was rejected in favor of Sam Smith’s Writing’s On the Wall.

You commission Radiohead to do a song for your film and then complain about it being “too dark”?! 

Ah, well. Chin up, lads, you’re in reasonably good company, with Johnny Cash, Alice Cooper, Blondie, Eric Clapton, The Pet Shop Boys, Pulp, The Eurythmics, and Lana Del Rey (who also submitted a song for Spectre) all sent packing after their contributions were likewise deemed unfit.

The song was eventually made available on Soundcloud (and later as a bonus track on the special edition of A Moon Shaped Pool), so now the whole world can see just how thoroughly the bloody gaffers cocked it up.

To be fair, director Sam Mendes described the situation as “an utter nightmare… We had this beautiful song and we weren’t able to use it… But it’s somehow cooler for Radiohead to have written a song that wasn’t used.”

On that point, I may have to begrudgingly agree.

If our beloved M can win an Oscar for five minutes of screen time (as Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love), Bérénice Marlohe should’ve at least been considered for her brilliant work as Sévérine (I wonder if the accents are meant as a playful nod to her name). This is the type of nuanced performance that the Academy serially ignores; nothing too showy, but superbly acted and quietly devastating, with a weight and resonance rarely paralleled in franchise pictures like this. Yet another exhibit in my ongoing case for the creation of a “Best Actor/Actress in a Bit Part” Oscar category. 

Nothing else to really add here, I just wanted to shine a light on this deceptively complex performance and the uncommonly fertile arc that gives it root. Certainly not the throwaway schlock Bond girls are typically afforded.

And speaking of Bond girls, a curious little side note (sorry, I guess I did have more to add):

While doing some research on Mlle. Marlohe (who six months prior to her audition, had a dream about acting alongside Javier Bardem), I realized that every one of my favorite Bond girls is played by a French actress: Claudine Auger, Carole Bouquet, Sophie Marceau, Eva Green, Bérénice Marlohe, and Léa Seydoux.

I hated this film in theaters. I feeling like I’d been personally insulted, like somewhere in the credits it read: “Person We Specifically Ruined This Franchise to Spite……Christian Ryan.” Hell, I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation about the Bond films that I didn’t eventually steer to Quantum of Solace just so I could slag it off. 

But after rewatching the damn thing tonight… I think I owe this movie an apology. Sure, it might be the weakest of the Craig series, but it’s not a bad picture - far from it - and in the context of the five-film arc, it’s a bloody solid episode.

It makes me wonder what other films I’ve misjudged…

Oh shit. Does this mean I have to go back and rewatch The Last Airbender?

My dad used to buy these canned Vienna sausages to snack on, only because no one else would eat them. My brothers and I, growing boys and perpetually ravenous, would devour everything else in the house - every morsel, every crumb - but the old man could always count on those Vienna sausages being there... at least for a while.

One day I was so desperately hungry (after my mom left, it took a couple months before my dad figured out how much food it took to feed five kids) I opened a can of those sausages, pulled one from that slimy goop, plugged my nose, and choked it back.

It was every bit as bad as I'd expected, but it did satiate my hunger, and after a while, I built up a tolerance to those Vienna sausages.

(After my brothers followed suit, my dad was eventually forced to move on to pork rinds. Poor bastard.)

After marathoning nearly two dozen Bond films - some of which are very bad - I guess I’ve just built up a tolerance to Die Another Day. I was surprised by how easy it went down. Oh, it's still a terrible film, but there's nothing in it that's any more outlandish than what's come before. One could even argue that it's simply keeping with tradition.

A couple summers ago, we were on a lake in Arkansas and my old man was pulling a few of us on a big tube behind a boat. My brother-in-law, who isn’t exactly my dad’s favorite person, made a yawning gesture - in essence, a thrown gauntlet - and the next thing I knew the tube was skipping across the water at around 70 mph. Before I could loosen my grip enough to safely flash the thumbs down sign, we hit a ripple and the tube flipped.

I guess my brain was having trouble processing what had happened and I came out of a little trance to find myself underwater and extremely disoriented. Floating there, not knowing which way was up or down, it occurred to me that I was probably going to drown.

I felt strangely at peace with the idea.

I was worried about my s drifting out of my open eyes, but was immediately comforted with the realization that I wouldn’t need them when I was dead. I must’ve bobbed there, head down, for around twenty seconds or so as everyone scrambled to my rescue (something I wasn’t conscious of at that moment). I’d been under plenty of waves while surfing, similarly disoriented, which might explain my state of calm, but I’d never resigned myself so quickly to drowning! I clearly recall thinking: So this is it. This is how I’m going to die. Honestly, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be.

In that instance, for some inexplicable reason, the image of a person trapped under an avalanche popped into my head. I’d read somewhere that the way to tell up from down was to spit. So I spat. (Retelling the story to my family later, everyone called bullshit on this, but I swear to god, I actually spat!) While scanning the water for the spit, I looked down and caught sight of my life jacket, keeping me afloat. Life jacket?!! Christian, you idiot! I lifted my head back, out of the water, and took a deep breath. A wide circle of panicked swimmers, rushing to my aid, closed in around me. 

Well, now don’t I feel silly. 

I think the lesson for me here is to not give up so easily. I still don’t understand why I was so cavalier about accepting my watery fate. Come on, you coward! The next time this happens, put up more of a fight!

And I guess the lesson for everyone else is this: if you ever find yourself underwater and extremely disoriented… just spit. It sounds crazy, I know, but there is at least one documented case of it having saved someone’s life.

If you’re going to cast Sophie Marceau in your movie, you’d better make damn sure the plot is easy to follow. How can any red-blooded human be expected to pay attention to anything else when she’s on screen? It’s like everything around her dissolves into a soupy fog, every other voice takes on that dampened ringing tone you generally hear in war movies after a bomb goes off.

Marceau could guest star on Sesame Street teaching kids to count to three and I’d lose the bloody plot.

Welp, I guess that's a wrap on Timothy Dalton. Sort of an 80's TV movie vibe to his short run, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially considering the Miami Vice flavor of this particular installment. I can't say that the old sport ever ed as Bond for me, or that I bought for a second that women like Carey Lowell or Talisa Soto could so easily succumb to his rugged charm, but he certainly put everything he had into the role, and it's unfortunate that legal issues with the property robbed him of at least one more chance to make the character his own. Dalton may not be the most charismatic or entertaining Bond, but only Daniel Craig can rival his talents as an actor/performer.

Oh, and one thing that really stood out to me after these two films - an epiphany of sorts - is that literally every single entry in this series would be better if it was half an hour shorter. Or, you know, if instead of tedious exposition, that superfluous half hour was padded out with more gratuitous sex and violence. I mean, what did you come into this movie hoping to see? The sinister machinations of a despotic megalomaniac or shit blowing up and Carey Lowell in a dripping wet teddy?

Of all the impossible stunts James Bond has pulled off, from that corkscrew car jump to freefalling thousands of feet without a parachute, the most impressive has to be the wardrobe change here. Thanks to the bomb timer countdown, we can see exactly how long it takes James to duck into a trailer, remove his clothes, apply elaborate whiteface makeup, put on a three-piece suit with suspenders, gloves, a giant bow tie, red nose, a wig and bowler, and lace up a pair of oversized, wingtip oxfords.

39 seconds. Wow.

When it comes to disguises, this guy doesn't clown around.

So who exactly is The Spy Who Loved Me? 

Well, we know James Bond is incapable of identifying or expressing love (let’s be generous and chalk it up to the subclinical condition alexithymia), so he’s definitely out, and his Soviet counterpart, Anya Amasova (codename: Triple X), wants to kill him for murdering her lover, Sergei Barsov (also a Soviet agent), so it’s improbable that she’d be the eponymous spy. (Add to that the fact Anya was shagging some random himbo at the time of her supposed lover’s death and I think we can safely assume that whatever she felt for Sergei, it sure as hell wasn’t love.)

Poor Sergei, knocked off in the first five minutes. Could it be that Sergei, from Anya’s perspective, is The Spy Who Loved Me? Sergei, who helped her find a greater purpose. Sergei, who guided her, even in death, from the hateful path of vengeance to the peaceful glade of forgiveness. Sergei, whose sacrifice brought together two mortal enemies.

Is the title an expression of the guilt and anguish Anya suffers for her lost comrade? A tribute to a love that wasn’t fully realized until it was too late?

Almost certainly not. After all, this is a James Bond movie, not bloody Tolstoy.

A couple decades ago, my girlfriend and I took a long-tail boat ride around “James Bond Island” in Phang Nga Bay (the shooting location for Scaramanga’s lair). Unfortunately, the thing that stands out most about that day is that she accidentally dropped her camera into the ocean. Not ideal, especially considering it was a newly restored, vintage Pentax, but the real issue was that we’d been goofing around that morning and she’d taken some compromising photos of me coming out of the shower doing these little helicopter twirls with my John Thomas.

I know the chances that anyone ever retrieved that roll of film are extremely low, but that doesn’t stop me from dreading the day I inevitably find that blackmail letter on my doorstep. It’s the #1 reason I’ve never considered a career in politics.

I love that the minions who run Mr. Big’s secret underground lair all dress like Radio Shack employees. Red polo shirt, denim jeans, white tennis shoes… and a standard-issue MAC-10 submachine gun. Mr. Big may be an evil kingpin hellbent on global domination, but the fact that he encourages a casual dress code elevates him above most of the people I’ve worked for.

If you played much Goldeneye back in the day, you probably had a favorite character. For me, it was the voodoo doctor, Baron Samedi. I’d never actually seen him in Live and Let Die, but I knew the actor (Geoffrey Holder) as the spokesman for 7 Up, and I really dug his design in the game. There was no tactical advantage to playing as Baron as he was a fairly large target (he’d even take damage if you shot his top hat!), but I got a kick out of imitating his voice as I trash-talked my opponents, and after every kill, I’d laugh heartily and bellow his trademark catchphrase:

“Crisp and clean and no caffeine. Never had it, never will!”

Follow me for more completely pointless content!

(For example: did you know, despite Holder’s claim, 7 Up actually did release a short-lived caffeinated soft drink called 7 Up Gold? What a crock!)

I was apprehensive going into this one, as its reputation doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, but I should have had a little more faith in my boy Kersh, having just come off directing The Greatest Film of All Time.

I might actually prefer Connery as this more vulnerable Bond, and I definitely prefer the tidier take on Thunderball (honestly, I can’t fathom how anyone could prefer that waterlogged adaptation from ‘65). Watching Never Say Never Again immediately after the last three Connery outings gave me a sense of clarity and appreciation I’m not sure I would’ve had otherwise; this apocryphal revival isn’t competing with some sacred reliquary of cinematic treasures, just a factory line of campy spy confections. It is a worthy successor in every way. 

You’ve got Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera as Bond girls, Bernie Casey as Felix Leiter, Max von Sydow as Blofeld, Rowan Atkinson (in his film debut) as comic relief, at least three undeniably KILLER action set pieces, and for us Gen Xers, a wealth of vintage 80’s kitsch. Hell, the central clash between Bond and the film’s antagonist plays out over a sit down arcade machine. I mean, come on, people! What more do you want?!

Having completed EON’s Connery cycle, I suppose it’s time I confront a few hard truths.

Bit of a spotty batch, this. High camp, low disciplined filmmaking on the whole, with Goldfinger the only entry I could confidently recommend. Oh, the others have their fine points and well-executed sequences (rear projection and under cranked cameras aside), but the formula ages as badly as its star, and by Diamonds the series seems to exist solely to provide material for the Austin Powers franchise.

But the most disappointing revelation for me? Sean Connery just isn’t my James Bond.

The guy reminds me of a stepdad I once had, an arrogant, womanizing narcissist. Maybe that’s not entirely fair, maybe I’m projecting, but Connery’s Bond seems like the kind of twat who’d promise to let you take the Porsche to prom and then at the last minute make up some bullshit story about the shifter acting funny, so you’re forced to show up at your date’s house in your mom’s Ford Tempo, and she’s like, “What happened to the Porsche?” and you’re all, “My stepdad’s being a dick,” and then she looks at the Tempo and says with a heavy sigh, “Maybe we should just walk.”

Fucking Dennis!!
