watched it in 2 sittings because i slept an hour in. ummmm the writing is a bit heavy-handed, the film tries to be a lot of things at once but I guess the overarching theme is still consistent. kristen stewart's misplaced neuroses while playing bella swan have blossomed into a perfectly placed neurosis in her role as timlin in this film.

i'm seeing all these reviews that rate this film highly based on the context in which it was produced, or the fact that real hollywood money was spent on this which makes its absurdity that much more hilarious. however, i'm watching this in 2025, and the context of this film has largely been snatched away from it. i don't think you can avoid watching it anachronistically, and so it's just not funny anymore. it is however easy to see how this brand of comedy might have inspired a lot of pop culture in the early to mid 2010s (smosh, shane dawson, pink guy)

a friendship in decay, the evils of polyamory, using water as a metaphor...this is so current for me

this is the second baumbach film i've watched (the first being mistress america) where he touches on the ownership an observer has over a story, and the general selfishness writers in his universe seem to be afflicted with. maybe this is an overly generous rating, but i really ire how true-to-life his characters have always felt, and i'm also a sucker for a family drama
