HELP NEEDED
I'm trying to a documentary/docudrama, watched on the BBC several years back (poss. early 2000s), about a witch trail. The actors (or actress; it might've been only the woman on trial who had any dialogue) were in 17th century costumes. The dialogue was directly lifted from the trial records, which could mean that it was from the Montaillou case, but don't let that stray you. There might have been interviews with historians and other experts as well.

The thing that stuck out most was that the actors were seated in a completely white tiled room. The witch looked increasingly distraught, a bit as seen in Häxan.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Any lead is appreciated. // BREAKING According to this write up, Love in the Commune is also known as simply The Commune and possibly really called Love and Murder in the Commune, which is already on this list. The director is Monroe Beehler ("Mark Aaron" was a pseudonym), a pioneer of gay porn.

Sometimes you need to get angry to get something started.

Several revered Black filmmakers were asked to come up with a list of important films made by Black directors. Out of an undoubtedly great list, a selection of 50 was made. Clickbait rules and Google AdSense were consulted. Titles were scrapped and replaced by predictable Hollywood hogwash. It became insipid and inessential.

The message however still stands: many films by Black (and Asian, and Latino, and…) filmmakers —in Hollywood and beyond— are systematically ignored and as a result slowly forgotten.

With this list I have tried to dig up some of those essential films. Unlike the original 50 I did not want to exclusively focus on Black directors, but on certain themes: the African diaspora, the stranger, Black awareness and empowerment.

Suggestions welcome, as usual.

• The Celebration

  Thomas Vinterberg [Denmark / Sweden]

  Mine, possibly many other Gen Xers', introduction to Danish film. Seen many more, and much better, but this is a solid start. You'll be surprised to see how much Festen influenced American art house.

• The Death of a Composer: Rosa, a Horse Drama

  Peter Greenaway [Netherlands]

  A documentation of Louis Andriessen's opera Rosa – A Horse Drama, with a libretto by Peter Greenaway. The live performance uses Greenaway's (and Eadweard Muybridge's) film footage, and the film adds another layer by splicing in text and found footage into the opera footage. My first Greenaway; I later discovered his fantastic, highly recommended earlier work on which Rosa heavily relies.

• Werckmeister Harmonies

  Béla Tarr [ / / Hungary / Italy]

  An accessible Tarr, if only because of the reasonable length.

• In the Mood for Love

  Wong Kar-wai [ / Hong Kong / Netherlands]

  The only title that's also included on the RT list. For many their introduction to Hong Kong cinema. I didn't like it that much – too melodramatic for my taste – but the cinematography and music greatly make up for that.

• Songs from the Second Floor

  Roy Andersson [Sweden / Denmark / Norway]

  Where film was going in the new millennium. A bit postmodernist quirky, but critical of itself and its time without the nauseating self-referencing irony that we've grown accustomed to nowadays. Mostly picked for that reason.

• Fat Girl

  Catherine Breillat [ / Italy]

  Unpleasant. I doubt a film like this can be made nowadays with all fatphobia hysteria going on. It's January 2001; there's no hope and everything's still possible.

• What Time Is It There?

  Tsai Ming-liang [ / Taiwan]

  Not my favourite Tsai Ming-liang so far – that'd be his short Tian qiao bu jian le [The Skywalk Is Gone] (2002) but my first and a personal eye-opener. The Hole is more accessible – it's a musical after all. Maybe I was a too inexperienced spectator to understand his language noticing my rating of the time (3,5/5). This film beautifully meanders between Eastern and Western film-making.

• Russian Ark

  Aleksandr Sokurov [Canada / Denmark / Finland / / Japan / Russian Federation]

  Not one of my favourites, but a stunning accomplishment and to my surprise not on the RM list.

• The Son

  Luc & Jean-Pierre Dardenne [Belgium / ]

• A New Life

  Philippe Grandrieux []

  The first true post-9/11 title. Bleak and hopeless.
