God I missed watching Spike Lee films. Can’t believe I’m so close to finishing his filmography!

This is the perfect movie to spend a summer night during a heat wave watching, when you’re Italian American. Summer of Sam is as gaudy and thrilling as it is beautiful. The harsh realities of the Son of Sam murders are contrasted with a bright color palette and panoramic views of the Bronx, cementing the viewers as outsiders the exact way the main characters are. It’s like a cinematic potion — mixing Spike’s older films with Scorsese and John Waters, creating one of the most unique aesthetics I’ve seen in a film, and the acting enhances it greatly.

The main trio of Sorvino/Brody/Leguizamo is incredible. They play off each other very well and each really commit to their characters. In particular I found that John Leguizamo’s impulsive Vinny contrasts almost perfectly with his savvy wife, Mira Sorvino’s Dionna — especially as their sexual tension informs their relationship. This is possibly one of Spike’s most stacked casts across his films, and the top-notch character work makes it a memorable film.

On my lunch break at work, I've been watching so many 2010s CollegeHumor sketches on Dropout recently, and it's genuinely shocking how well a lot of them hold up!

And I’m also shocked at how few of them are on Letterboxd to log. It’s unfortunate that the best streaming service’s content, outside of Dropout Presents, is ultimately just ignored by Letterboxd. That should change. I don’t wanna use Serializd and build another audience there! Just put them here! So I can preach the good word of Dropout dot TV (not a scam) to my Internet friends here!

The first 5 episodes of Game Changer’s 7th season have been absolute cinema and would be right at the top of my 2025 film rankings. At least put One Year Later on there, that’s film length.

This needed to be either 15 to 20 minutes longer with the exact same tone, or 10x funnier and more lighthearted with the exact same length.

As it stands now, the film feels incredibly unbalanced. It’s best when it captures how out-of-touch with the rest of the world billionaires are, punching up at what makes them so strange rather than punching down at the working class people they exploit. But unfortunately it only does so less than half the time.

Found a new favorite while sick. Lots of great thematic elements to wrestle with, namely the predatory and capitalistic nature of televangelism, forgetting Christianity’s values in favor of profit. Very funny, and an essential film to watch if you have childhood religious trauma or just hate God’s Not Dead-style cinematic grifting. X singer Exene shows surprisingly good range, and Viggo Mortensen is clearly having the time of his life in this role.

The Do Not Watch List — Worst Movies I’ve Ever Seen: Entry #42

Imagine a shitty porn film, but instead of nudity to make you cum it’s filled to the brim with child abuse and neglect to manipulate you into crying.

Behold, you have created Sound of Hope

Seriously, there are some things that are just disgusting to watch for the sake of being disgusting. The one that really sticks out is the reaction when Teri starts acting like a cat upon coming home to the Martins — a coping mechanism for her immense trauma that the parents were warned about ahead of time. What does the dad do? He makes fun of her and threatens to have her sleep outside and not eat just because of her severe trauma. The derealization Teri feels from her intense past trauma has been her coping mechanism in stressful situations — like moving in with another family. What she doesn’t need is an ignorant man insulting her coping skills when as a twelve-year-old child, she hasn’t learned anything else. The film portrays a bunch of intense problems and doesn’t offer any real solutions. In fact, the kids are viewed as the “problem” rather than the abuse and trauma they face — and it’s sickening to watch.

This is kinda exemplified when Susan the social worker — the only character I sympathized with — tries to explain to the Martins how deeply traumatized Teri is. The writers had an opportunity to really send a good message to the audience, some of whom might even consider adopting, by letting the Martins have a thoughtful discussion with the social workers about the realities of adopting older children with severe trauma. Instead, the dad basically calls other people “afraid” and cowardly for not wanting the responsibility that comes with caring for these older children.

When they’re free of their talent’s political biases, I quite like Angel Studios. The Chosen is a great series about the life of Jesus and the Apostles, even if Jonathan Roumie is somewhat problematic off-camera. Cabrini did great discussing immigration and racism through the lens of a great saint. Unfortunately, when every other scene is meant to manipulate you into feeling sympathy, Sound of Hope feels incredibly insincere and shallow. I don’t see any authenticity here, and the call for viewers to “pay it forward” feels like they’re grifting. With this and Sound of Freedom in mind, Angel needs to stop trying to telling stories where traumatizing children is normalized.

I can’t believe they turned CollegeHumor’s “Porn But For Crying” sketch into a whole ass movie…

Finally got to cross this one off my list, ever since I heard such a film existed through friends back in high school I’d been dying to watch it!!!

I’m lukewarm on films that try really hard to push an “underdog story” onto viewers, through needlessly dramatic plot points and insincere emotions. But Coyote Ugly doing the former at first but then being one of the funniest ways to portray an underdog story. It’s an obvious farce but it’s got a lot of really palpable heart and kindness in it.

Part of that is because Piper Perabo’s emotionality comes off as really genuine. Not too familiar with her aside from that awesome anti-Kavanaugh stunt she pulled, but she was really good here.

I’m making my way through the LOTR book a second time now (currently at Two Towers), and I think I appreciate Tolkien’s writing more as an adult than I did as a teenager. The movies were how I was introduced to the franchise, and part of why I’m so into fantasy now. Third time watching them, accompanying my second time reading, and I really think we got the best adaptation possible. Tolkien’s writing can be as dense as it is beautiful. There’s filler pages and definitely filler plots. Peter Jackson brought this prose to life with beautiful visuals, making the more mundane aspects enjoyable.

This might be the most maximalist, expansive fan film ever, as Jackson was a big fan of the book going into making these. The backstory is fortunately condensed, to make Tolkien’s worldbuilding digestible to audiences, but the creative impulse that sparked him to create…everything he did…is still very much there because Jackson also took a lot of care to make the film honor this iconic fantasy world. New Zealand’s Middle-Earth landscape is It’s very much a product of the 2000s, when franchise films could still feel incredibly genuine. The very 2000s cast is perfect — not a single bad actor. Elijah Wood finally got a chance to redeem himself for his last adventure film, Rob Reiner’s awful North. Ian McKellen IS Gandalf. This time around, I found Billy Boyd’s take on Pippin Took to be a great comic relief among the darker and more dramatic moments — a character that I needed to read directly in Tolkien’s work to appreciate as much as I do. He really represents optimism and a positive attitude, one of the most important parts of any journey, and Boyd’s warm smile translated this perfectly. The joy Pippin and Merry spread unto the Fellowship (and others) is very much like the joy I felt watching Tolkien’s words come to life in this beautiful production. High fantasy is a hard genre to make, but the sheer commitment from absolutely everyone involved makes this the best possible take on it.

I can’t imagine it going down any other way. Everything was in the right place at the right time.

When it tried to be a straight Toxic Avenger reboot, it was great. The splatters were spectacular, and they made a really good choice to use practical effects for them because Citizen Toxie’s CGI was very distracting.

…but when it tried to do its own thing and change Uncle Lloyd’s characters, especially Toxie’s new relationship with his son, I wasn’t as into it. Sure, it raised the stakes the way Sara did in the first film, but it felt way too forced, like an attempt to add some sort of message to the “turn your brain off” splatter film it is.

I do like Peter Dinklage’s interpretation of Toxie, though. He fits this world really well the way Mitch Cohen and Ron Fazio’s Toxic Avengers fit the first 3.

Gauntlet in the Garden is a concentrated dose of serotonin, disguised as a live Dungeons & Dragons actual play.

As a deeply online high schooler, I loved CollegeHumor. I always watched their YouTube sketches, followed the cast and writers on Instagram, and read Dorkly comics. I stayed a fan as I started college - new cast and a new business direction meant new formats for comedy. But when Dimension 20 was first announced, I was skeptical. I liked D&D, but had never heard of actual plays before and didn't necessarily see the appeal. Why were these comedians going to be playing tabletops for the internet, exactly?

I put off D20 while watching the other content, because I just didn't "get" it. After following the transition from CH to Dropout for about a year, I finally made the jump to become a paid subscriber in 2021. Following the campaigns on Dropout, with their ad-free and uncensored format, made it much easier to digest, and I started to see the appeal...because it's like you have a seat at the table. Every D20 campaign - yes, even the bad ones - has the vibe of a tabletop game night with your friends. Their authenticity shines in the way they roleplay, and you really get to watch the players grow in confidence. I loved all the callbacks that Gauntlet had to past seasons, not only through the multiverse plot and the characters introduced but through inside jokes and Easter eggs.

The fact that they SOLD OUT Madison Square Garden to host an actual play speaks a lot to those feelings. Quite literally "dropping out" from their past at CollegeHumor, they've spent the last few years building this audience for bigger, deeper, and weirder content. D20 would not have lived on the early 2000s CH platform, but it's the perfect fit for Dropout because it's not just hilarious but deep and thoughtful - each cast member's authenticity shines in the way they perform on that screen.

Dropout isn't just a streaming service, and D20 isn't just a show. It's a community. It's Zac Oyama making the whole table burst out laughing with a one-liner, and Ally Beardsley's sarcastic comment after. It's Lou Wilson baffling Siobhan Thompson with his character choices. It's Emily Axford and Brian Murphy being the chaos couple, and Brennan Lee Mulligan having to rein them in. The cast are allowed to be themselves, and many fans feel inspired to go out and similarly embrace their weirdness rather than hiding it away. I may be reading into this too much, but fan interactions at this live show - through the dice rolls and Brennan's resulting multiverse changes - speak to how much Dropout as a company appreciates the fans and wants to include them, and how many people are a part of this community now.

I've said this several times here, but Dropout has always given its talent a way to do things that bring them joy. As a writer, worldbuilder, and performer, tabletops really bring Brennan joy. Seeing him spread joy in the biggest venue someone has performed at under the Dropout name is beautiful.

The live shows are a love letter to Dimension 20 and what makes it so great. And to Dropout. And to the community that they've built.

I cannot believe I'm going to see the Seattle show next month. If the joyful atmosphere of the D20 live show was this palpable from my TV screen, I can only imagine it'll be even better when I'm face to face with these people who have consistently made me smile throughout my teenage years and the past half of my 20s.

Only a puppetteer can take a stage musical with such intricate choreography and puppetry and turn it into a full-on movie musical with a bigger canvas.

Watching it a second time, I've found that I really adore Ellen Greene's performance as Audrey. She brings such an understated kindness and comion towards Seymour that's paired excellently with Frank Oz's direction and juxtaposed with the rest of Skid Row being cynical, materialistic, or abusive.

In the phone call with Audrey II, for instance, the killer plant is always framed from the bottom up while Audrey is top-down, like potential prey for being “too nice.” The former has all the power in the scenario, and Audrey is reminded that because of her situation, she really can't escape Skid Row even if she tries. Abusive people (and plants) have power in this world — like Orin and Audrey II — and Audrey's longing to be free from this abusive cycle pairs really well with Oz's slow zooms in her more emotional moments.

Greene originated the role in Alan Menkin's production, and you can see why they wanted to keep her. I can't imagine anyone else playing Audrey.

Noise Boy Josh Ruben did a great job balancing genres with Heart Eyes. This is a slasher that plays out like a Hallmark movie and I mean that in the best way possible. Werewolves Within was hilarious despite still being horror, but Ruben’s followup feels much more sinister. The kills build on the slasher formula in their setup, but are executed in a very creative way, partly because of the very unique motivation and setting.

There’s a great tale of resilience to be found here too, though Jay and Ally’s dynamic. They were so into each other by the end that they forgot that they wanted to live. Of course, then, they walk — and don’t run — away from the Heart Eyes Killer. They make the smartest decisions ever under so much pressure from Heart Eyes, they stick together and attempt to take the killer down.

It’s less cheesy than you might expect a CollegeHumor alum’s filmmaking to be, and very smart and self-aware. I wonder if that post-credits scene is setting up a sequel, because I love Jay & Ally’s eventual relationship so much and I think Ruben would build on it well.

I liked it more than I didn’t, but I don’t think I’ll ever revisit it. Bryan Singer’s stuff has this weird thing where there’s a quick sprint of tight, thrilling moments and then a whole lot of nothing ed by a great script before the thrills eventually come back. The Usual Suspects embodies this style fully. I can see why people would like this, but it’s not really my thing.

Singer may be a pedophile, but he also knows how to cast a movie. Not a single bad actor in this one, aside from Spacey as the perfectly cast creepy centerpiece I really enjoyed Benicio Del Toro and Gabriel Byrne’s performances. They nail the “down on their luck petty criminals” they’re supposed to embody. I’d definitely watch more films they’re in.

Never trust a guy who infodumps about board games and then sings Radiohead and praises the prequels immediately after…

A very well-made, increasingly unhinged thriller. The lightheartedness in the first third provides the viewers with the same illusion of safety that Hugh Grant’s Mr. Reed gives the missionaries. Right when he goes over to “meet his wife,” a masterful tonal shift occurs. He convinced the Sisters he was there to help them, and asked them to give a “small yes” before trapping and torturing them. The illusion of choice leads only to demise in this case.

Love the contrast between Mr. Reed — who has cult leader vibes at times, against the well-meaning but somewhat culty Mormons — and Sister Barnes — an almost Christlike figure in her sacrifice. The small acts of heroism from her and Sister Paxton all make for a major sacrifice in the end. The filmmakers used time and color very effectively, both to represent the change in Mr. Reed’s nature and what it’s like to eventually be free from those influences.

The single star is for Eugene Cordero and Eugene Cordero only. The man slayed. He’s a powerhouse performer and brings a very positive energy to being in the film that doesn’t spread to any of his scene partners, unfortunately.

This movie is exactly what I would’ve loved when I was in middle school. Unfortunately many jokes that I found funny back then aren’t as funny now. Linda Cardellini, however, is incredibly well-cast. She never really gets a chance to shine, but her chemistry with Allen Covert as the lead is strong. It’s a shame because there’s potential for her character to be developed as more than just an empathetic confidant to Covert’s Alex, but the very male-centric cast and writing unfortunately casts her aside instantly.

There’s some very clear traces of Happy Madison through the shared talent, but the humor being a little more mature and unhinged makes it more bearable for me.

I never understood why Russell Brand got so popular at that one specific point of the 2010s. Having now watched Get Him to the Greek, I have finally realized why: because he has the singular talent of dumbing down classic British-style comedy and making it “accessible” to non-Brits like myself. His entire brand of comedy is “endearing” intellectualism before derailing into the most basic lowbrow humor known to man.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall did not need a sequel or spin-of. I would’ve rather had it be about the kinky honeymooners than Brand’s Aldous Snow, already the weak link among a stellar cast. It’s rarely funny, mediocre at best and downright insufferable at worst.

Already loved this movie, but I appreciated it for what it was more on a second watch. A common refrain nowadays is that “there is no satire” anymore, since real life is just as absurd. If that is indeed the case, then I believe American Psycho is a satire of a culture beyond its time.

Because every day now, one-percenters who show no respect or empathy towards others much like Patrick Bateman are out here directly or indirectly taking lives. It’s almost like Brett Easton Ellis, and Mary Harron by extension, knew what it was going to be like if we kept giving people in power the free rein to take others down for their own amusement. While grossly exaggerated, Patrick embodies the shallowness and materialism of people whose “American Dreams” are met, and how developments in capitalism have only made things worse over time. He’s a cruel mess and a monster, but because he’s got money, connections, and a nice smile, it’s all okay.

There’s something almost gothic about that penthouse murder scene with Christie, which, on this rewatch, I think might be one of the most brilliant scenes in the film. In a classical sense, a “gothic” story is essentially one that reveals societal fears through outlandish, oftentimes brutal situations. And as Christie discovers the truth about Patrick, you’re watching her psychological undoing play out in real time. The audience’s appropriate emotional response is a visceral one, as a chainsaw-wielding Patrick clearly not thinking straight takes his next victim. Christie realizes she went to bed with a murderer, not the rich charming man he seemed, and it’s almost like she gains class consciousness — becoming aware of Patrick’s illusions and wanting to run off in fear of being screwed over (and, of course, killed).

It’s wild, but it’s the kind of wild that makes me appreciate it more.

Definitely watching this a second time, holy fuck. I’d love to own a copy.

Been on a Parker Posey kick since White Lotus ended. This is her best performance by far. No notes.

I’m not really familiar with the Archie universe, but they seem to lean towards a cleaner, more wholesome style of humor. I was thrown for a loop with the Josie and the Pussycats movie, which I’ve been wanting to watch for a long time. It’s so unhinged, so maximalist (COMPLIMENT), so unlike what I’d expect something based on those comics to be. But it still has the same heart, because it’s made with love. The musical sequences are a joy, the performances are earnest (especially from Rosario Dawson) or adding to the unhinged-ness (Posey, Alan Cumming, Missi Pyle). Balancing the joy with the rather dark, and at times crude, humor is a big challenge, but they rise up to it and make one of the most fun first-time watches I’ve done recently.

My question is this: why did Universal take a kids’ comic and turn it into a brilliant satire rather than exploiting its marketability to kids? Much like Parker Posey’s Fiona does herself in the film? They’re clearly a shadow of the company they used to be. I think the Pussycats movie embodies the underdog stories that the cartoons/comics are based on, and does so hilariously. The comedy comes from how realistic the portrayal of the music industry is, because it’s absolutely insane. Young talented people are exploited, corporations forget their morals in favor of profit, and talentless people with the right connections are rewarded. All of this is explored here. I can’t not love it.

Dropout Presents #8

….wow. Just incredible.

Four Pills is the kind of comedy special that deserves attention. Get that Dropout.tv trial or subscription, if you don’t already subscribe. Go watch this special. Tell your friends about it. This is not your typical standup comedy special. Cameron Esposito tells a powerful story, a true story, and she put so much care into telling it.

Cameron’s experience with her Bipolar diagnosis is just one case of an unfortunate reality: people with “invisible” disabilities often have to perform some extensive labor just to get through each day. Neglecting mental health for creativity’s sake is unhealthy, and Cameron’s own decisions to balance the creative drive with her own health are inspiring. As a fellow creative with a “invisible” disability, who takes meds to balance it out, the clear labor was very relatable.

And this balance was on display throughout the hourlong special. It’s Cameron’s directorial debut, her full creative vision and all the creative highs manifested. She built a beautiful set, wrote some amazing jokes, and really found a place for her to be her true self, rather than crafting a persona like many comedians do. I’ve been a fan for a while and am so excited for her career since this, since she's really a gem.

I’ve been incredibly grateful for Dropout these past few years of my life. It’s been full of ups and downs, but my fandom has never faded. The community has been wonderful to stay involved in. Every time I put on something from them, I smile because of all the authenticity I see on screen. I've started to feel positive changes in my self-confidence and value my real-life friendships more.

Seeing Cameron be so real on that stage, talking about the side effects of her psych meds and prioritizing her mental health? That only made these feelings stronger. I cried and smiled within an hour. I appreciated her vulnerability, her willingness to share, and her authenticity. She’s a real inspiration.

Thank you, Cameron. And thank you, Dropout. You’ve legitimately helped me feel okay about myself. I can’t wait for the future.

More New Millennium period pieces, please.

I adored Y2K’s aesthetic, it really felt like a love letter to the era I grew up in. For a directorial debut, Kyle Mooney’s creative voice is particularly strong and well-developed. The creative choices go perfectly hand-in-hand with the script’s offbeat nature. Looking forward to his future filmmaking career, he’s one of my all-time favorite SNL people. I was smiling the whole way through.

The film’s tonal shift from a pure comedy to the apocalyptic sci-fi/comedy fusion could’ve been a lot better, but I think it sees and understands the issues with how automation has taken over our lives and isolated us. It’s only through human connection and creativity where people can gain a sense of community and hope. I can’t help but ire Kyle’s vision in the third act, reaching beyond anxieties about automation to make a difference in the world once you understand what’s at stake. If The Electric State embodies everything wrong with how we as a society have been viewing AI, then Y2K gets it completely right.

It’s a labor of love more than anything. Kyle and his co-writer Evan Winter clearly love the era it’s set in and created an original premise from that, modernizing past films that were similarly critical of algorithmic culture like War Games. The referential humor is cringy and awkward at times, but the acting and values are earnest enough that it doesn’t necessarily bother me.

This might be my “I don’t care, I think this is good” movie. I vibed with everything — the characters, the creative choices, and especially the message. And I wish I lived in the ending’s timeline…President Fred Durst could’ve stopped 9/11 from happening.

Some great punch-ups to help fight the stigma around the way mental illness — and especially Taylor’s own Bipolar disorder — is treated in the U.S. It’s a really difficult thing to live with and accept that you have, and you might as well find humor in it.

Not to be parasocial on LB, but I feel less alone watching Taylor’s specials or her other comedy work. She comes off as an incredibly sincere performer and person, only slightly playing it up on camera, because she’s sharing such personal stories and empowering others to tell their own.

Casting Flula in a political thriller should be considered a war crime, but he plays the character so straight that you forget he’s a legitimate actor when he’s not overdoing that Bavarian stereotype in his comedic work.

The plot lost me a little bit in the third act, since I just wasn’t a fan of how Bree had to be “saved,” but I found everything else about Klute brilliant.

Fonda/Sutherland excel as a neo-noir duo. Without their acting, the film would be nothing. The creative choices throughout are strong, from the opening sequence to the falling action it’s like we’re in Detective Klute and Bree’s minds, searching for meaning among all the noise and absurdities of life.

Need someone to match my freak like Bree & Klute, to be honest.

There is a scene where Jean-Claude Van Damme does a mid-fight split to avoid being electrocuted like it’s the most normal thing in the world. This happens 20 minutes or so into the film. It’s a brilliant take on the emotional rollercoaster that is a toxic relationship, and the son trying to keep them together for the sake of it all.

The horror comes not from the supernatural aspects, in my opinion, but from the way Mark and Anna both feel incredibly helpless at different points in time, and the way emotions are depicted. A masterclass from Isabelle Adjani.

Huge step down from the first film, but enjoyable. The humor and antics are still there, which make it more good-bad than just straight-up bad.

St. Trinian’s 2 leans way more on the adventure/heist elements by adding travel to the boarding school hijinks. This makes for a more thrilling story, but is much more unbalanced when it comes to the comedy. I’m still unsure on whether I like David Tennant as the villain or not — he’s so misogynistic and unlikable, but hilariously so, to the point that he’s a perfect fit for the universe this is set in.

Props to them for keeping everyone from the main cast, though!! That’s hard to do when your sequel is generally of much lower quality.

If I had watched Spring Breakers between the ages of 17 and 20, as a “baby queer” still figuring out my specific flavor, I would’ve given it 5 stars ironically. It is, for various reasons, a fucking meme of a film. It satirizes the freakish, shallow world of small-time crime, but doesn’t offer any alternatives to how we can fight it. It’s a paean to the offbeat, decadent nature of midnight movies, showing the world that Disney teen stars have matured by throwing them into softcore porno scenes.

Now, watching this for the first time as a 25-year-old bisexual chaos goblin, I find it to be everything that I mentioned above, but also somewhat brilliant. It’s stupid, it’s excessive, it’s gaudy. But it’s also thrilling, colorful, and oddly realistic. Despite the shallowness and stereotypical nature of the film, the simplicity elevates the very human story at its core. I’m wondering what it would've looked like if it was less haha-funny and more of a Zola-type dark comedy/satire.

Not bad for my first Harmony Korine film! I shouldn’t have put off watching his stuff, I’m convinced he’s a specific kind of genius.

Love me some queer cinema. I’m glad one accident on Netflix’s end made this a cult classic in the 2020s.

The most honest star rating I can give The Babadook is right in the middle between 0 and 5. It’s half gold and half garbage.

The Babadook monster being the physical embodiment of grief is brilliant. Amelia struggles to cope with her trauma and repressed emotions, and those emotions manifest in a physical form as our gay icon. As she grows overwhelmed by these emotions, her son Sam starts to see his apparitions, and is also unable to deal with the grief. In fact, it’s only by facing the memory of Amelia’s husband and Sam’s father dying that they can get rid of him. Dealing with death is no easy task, and it’s much easier when you’re not dealing with it alone. Whether it was intentional or not, I loved the way they explored this theme.

My problem with the film is that until the ending I found everyone insufferable and hard to relate to. Like, yes, a grieving mother and child are easy to feel empathy towards, but they could have at least made them likable. Amelia straight-up neglecting and endangering Sam really made me uncomfortable at times, and some of the family drama felt hastily written. They each make some rash decisions d with their grief, which is very realistic, but the way they treat each other until the “possession” was not justifiable. Grief shouldn’t excuse abuse.

I’ve always loved anime, ever since I was a kid, and I owe a lot of it to Hayao Miyazaki and the rest of Studio Ghibli. Watching a lot of Ghibli movies in my formative years, I learned a lot about the world and my place in it. I can’t think of a better set of films that portray a need for joy, care, and beauty in our society through storytelling than Ghibli’s. Every single movie I’ve watched of theirs has been a memorable and uplifting experience.

As a director, writer, producer, and occasional actor in his own films, Spike Lee has always delivered some thoughtful, engaging, and oftentimes hilarious movies that leave me thinking for days. His early visual style is also unmatched when it comes to the late ‘80s/early ‘90s aesthetic.

I’m not too familiar with Chinese (and Hong Kong) cinema, but Wong Kar-wai’s films have never failed to keep me fully immersed in the way he provides a window into a culture and worldview very different from mine, which I appreciate. As the profile pic (for now) shows, David Lynch is one of my favorite directors of all time, if not my absolute favorite. I’m currently on a quest to complete his filmography, currently having completed his TV shows and being really close (as of June 2024) with his narrative features.

His resume shows that he's not only a cinematic innovator, but a master of multiple genres, and a great actor to top it all off.

All performances ranked from phoned in to the Carreyest of the Carrey — based on the quality of his acting, and not of the film.

  1. Man on the Moon

Perhaps the greatest performance of his career.

  2. The Mask

The park scene is a masterclass in comedy filmmaking.

  3. The Truman Show

When I think of perfectly cast characters, I think of Truman. No one else could bring this much sincerity and confidence in such a tragic story.

  4. The Cable Guy

    Possibly his most unhinged performance?

  5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

If “Best Scene Partners” was an Oscar category, he and Kate Winslet would’ve won for this in 2005.

  6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

    A Christmas classic.

  7. Liar Liar

“I HOLD MYSELF IN CONTEMPT!” alone merits a high position.

  8. Earth Girls Are Easy

Meshed beautifully with Goldblum and Wayans.

  9. Dumb and Dumber

I’m a sucker for two actors with great chemistry. The Carrey/Daniels combo is wonderful here.

  10. Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Aubrey Plaza is a gem and the reason I have the “celebrity crush” tag on Letterboxd. I’ve never seen a bad performance from her, and everything she’s in is better because she’s in it. She has such a unique energy that comes from the joy she finds in acting. Whether she’s a snarky ing character, a solid lead actress, or even doing whiteface as an Italian American (it’s been twice now…), she always leaves me smiling.

The Anti 511t6k Watchlist https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/shawtygotjoe/list/the-anti-watchlist/ letterboxd-list-48680369 Thu, 11 Jul 2024 00:01:11 +1200 <![CDATA[

Movies I will most likely never watch. See the reasons why in the notes.

  • Antiporno

    This just sounds fucked up.

  • Blue Is the Warmest Color

    Corporate Sapphic Fetishization: The Movie.

Seriously, I am friends with several lesbians who despise this film for how shallow it is, and I feel like I was rightfully warned.

  • Cannibal Holocaust

Eww. I don't think there's any artistic value justifying this.

  • City Island

Fatphobia and a fat fetish, all in one movie? Thin privilege at its "finest" on display...

  • Cuties

…this is just child porn. No thank you!

  • Cyrus

I was interested in watching this originally, since I like the cast and the Duplass brothers, but the incest reviewers have mentioned makes me uncomfortable.

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul

    #NotMyRodrick

How could you make the only infallible source of knowledge on teenage boys’ habits into a shit show like this? I could never watch this unironically.

  • Gifted

Triggering content because it sounds too similar to my poorly adjusted childhood and gifted kid trauma (I may actually watch this one just because it’s on Netflix though).

  • Gigli

    Just no...

  • God's Not Dead 2

Or any of the other sequels. I made the mistake of watching the first one, and I really don’t think they’re a good example of Christian cinema in any way.
