encapsulates the experience of ego death to an unfathomable degree

and one of the most visually stunning films ever made, genuinely gobsmackingly so

but as Josh so eloquently said, there are a lot of very uncomfortable moments. like i know those two were deeply traumatized but c’monnn man. and the 3rd act’s sexual obsession is quite off-putting even though it does fit in the context of the film

this film is a major contributor(🫡) to my abolition of Stars as it feels wrong to rate this highly w/ the aforementioned uncomfiness but it also feels wrong to rate it too low given the artistry on display

going back to ego death, i first watched this exactly 1 week after my own experience and was astounded at how this was able to capture such an otherworldly happening w/ such accuracy. not only did it hit all the beats of what happens but it also portrayed it in the exact manner of how it happens, the camerawork/cinematography is simply incredible

perfect St. Patrick’s day watch

while i really liked what was going on, i feel like it coulda been taken a couple steps further. it felt like a more hollywood/sterilized version of the Bong Joon Ho i’ve come to love. however I say this without having read the original book so i’d need to read that before i can speak more on the story itself

that being said, I do love sci-fi revolving around ed and replicated consciousness—the aforementioned Bobiverse book series and Pantheon being recent examples—especially when corporations and authoritarian figures are involved

stories that ask unanswerable questions like what exactly makes a human a human? are souls quantifiable and finite? or unboundedly abundant? what happens when the natural process of death is tampered with? are you locked in a manmade purgatory? and what happens if the servers shut down?

still really liked this and had a great time, but prolly my least fav BJH

which was much needed as i saw a total of 55 musical artists, 16 short films, 14 features, spent a conservatively estimated 24+ hrs waiting in lines, skinned 2 knees, and sprained 1 ankle :)

the concert footage was sick and the music was killer but i had to suppress a groan every time he started talking

as stinky as this was, it did make me wanna watch way more concert films/docs. stop making sense has been on the list for a minute and it might finally be time for it to stop warming the bench

SXSW feature #12

ankle high atmospheric horror w/ a heart of gold

i went into this ready for the ‘gimmick’ to get old but it was fucking phenomenal the whole way thru

it truly felt like we were witnessing the world through Indy’s eyes and it made me sob thinkin’ bout my Good Boy at home <3

as much as i loved this movie, i hate that i’ll forever be freaked tf out when deku starts reacting to ‘nothing’

when asked how they were able to get such a phenomenal performance from Indy—who is genuinely a better actor than half of hollywood—the director said “i was basically just saying the title over and over and over again.”
they also completely structured their shoots around Indy’s schedule which made production last over 3 years lol

+0.5 star for the titular goodest boy

this was my most anticipated film of sxsw but it was just kinda alright

it looked great, the planet was gorgeous and the sets/suits were v well crafted. plus the music was phenomenal (as expected of flylo) but everything else was just kinda middle of the road

it drew heavily from the masters Alien and The Thing but didn’t do enough to differentiate itself from them which resulted in it feeling like a weaker facsimile 

Eiza’s performance was killer but Aaron Paul kinda felt like he was phoning it in a bit

still def enjoyed it! i think i may have just built it up too much beforehand

a beautiful psychedelic film about beautiful psychedelic freaks

fueled by gallons of lsd, deep unspoken trauma, and the pursuit of a place in this everly unreal reality, these Surfers created some of the most wholly unique art

i mean who else has brought a shotgun to lollapalooza, fucked on a stage they just set fire to, and danced naked with nothing but clothespins on their nipples?

however this doc goes much further than just Gibby's antics because Gibby and co. are much more than just their antics

tbh i caught this premiere just cuz i had some time to kill but i was floored by how much i loved it

it had me laughing, ready to open the pit, and openly weeping. sometimes all at once

such a masterful use of mixed media
i could write pages about this film but i’ll refrain to entice you to see it for yourself

Annapurna Sriram you are a fucking STAR!!!

so so glad i got to enter the dreamy hallucinatory wasteland of Trashtown, USA

absolutely stunning visuals with the sharpest editing, writing, and humor. each and every performance was stellar but AP and Sadie truly shined like the Lights they are

every atom of this film oozes with ion, artistry, and love. beautiful in every sense of the word

i pray the general public gets a big screen to see this on because it deserves nothing less, guaranteed cult classic but hopefully it soars even higher

fun! as! hell!

i knew i was in for a good time when Cherry-Coloured Funk by the Cocteau Twins started playing

love creature features where the creatures aren’t the baddies but damn were these baddies pieces of shit LOL

absolutely loved the unicorn’s design and their ‘powers.’ ‘twas all very well done and those fuckers certainly had a presence

everyone’s performances were fucking amazing too. i’m so glad Jenna’s actually doing good movies now instead of that Miller’s Girl bullshit cuz this girl can act!! Will Poulter was also fuckin great but my goat has to be Anthony Carrigan (even tho he barely spoke lol)

only my 3rd world premiere so far but easily the most fun. hearing everyone react to brutal kills and cheer for others was just fuckin great. also loved hearing from the cast once again, and it was so sweet to see NoHo Hank get his well deserved flowers and prolly the biggest round of applause out of everyone

Sisyphus walked so It Ends could drive

a spiritual and ever so beautiful exploration of depression and the never-ending fight that is to Be

should you seek that which could be through sheer force of will? or should you accept that which is with a loving embrace? maybe the reason we’re here is to ask our friends dumb would you rather’s?

a very inventive story with characters that had a true life to them and a level of chemistry that made me feel like i was hanging with lifelong friends

this was my first time attending a premiere and it was awesome to hear the cast and crew share their personal stories of production. I was also lucky enough to chat with the director, Alex, and it was so damn cool to meet the artist that just wove a thread of gold into to the tapestry that is me

whenever you can, watch. this. fucking. movie.

Alex mentioned that the initial round of funding for this film came via him networking w/ ppl in high roller servers of vr poker, this shit is independent in every sense of the word and the authenticity/ion is palpable

i liked this way more than i was expecting 

while i don’t love the the animation style, the story is very well executed and there are still some great looking scenes. but hands down my favorite part is how developed the characters are

while i enjoy snyder’s Watchmen, his characters feel super flat esp compared to how much depth these characters have. this iteration feels much closer to reading the comic

i knew nothing about this era of Brazil’s history and the military dictatorship but i’m very glad that I, and everyone that watches this film, am able to learn about the crimes committed and hope that something may come from the increase of informed eyes. cuz i was dumbfounded when i learned all the military officials that committed these crimes were granted immunity

also sorry Mikey, but Fernanda Torres has my vote for Best Actress now

utterly devastating 

the most intimate a film has ever felt to me

the shooting style was good enough on its own but the content of the shots truly sold the first person experience. no grand establishing shots or wide cinematic panning, just the world as it is through the gaze of a young boy 

watching the frosting build up on the knife as his grandma cuts a cake for him, sheepishly turning away after locking eyes with the cute girl he was looking at, or closing his eyes in fear of the pain that awaits him

the blending of past present and future was perhaps the best use of nonlinear storytelling i’ve seen as well. the archival footage used also hit like a damn truck, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of the moment though seemingly unrelated 

there is so so much i would like to say about this film but i will say none of it because i went in fully blind and feel that’s how this should be experienced 

i don’t care about who wins oscars cuz it’s just a glammed up sham of money and politics, but in a perfect world, this takes home Best Picture

did i really just cry watching GTA role players?

entirely more moving and emotional than i thought possible for a movie filmed on GTA prominently featuring a perfectly shaped alien ass (s/o ParTeb)

though i didn’t know this was a “making-of” doc beforehand, i’m glad it was. i’ve seen/read countless iterations of hamlet but i’d never seen a display of an artist’s pursuit for meaning within the data stream of an online GTA server

hamlet was such a perfect mirror for the themes on display and honestly this was the most the story of hamlet (or any shakespeare) has ever resonated with me.

to be and fight against a sea of troubles, hardship, lost love, and the evil of your fellow man for an unknown, seemingly unending, span of time?

or not to be and set off to the undiscovered country that none ever return from? praying that which you know nothing about is at least more bearable than that which you know. 

thank god that Mark didn’t follow his kin and listen to the call of the void. thank god that this production was completed and shared with the world. thank god for this strange and senseless life. thank god for art. 

sure it’s silly but there’s inherent meaning in silliness. our world doesn’t make sense so why should we?

i really hope this isn’t the last full length film shot within a video game because i really think it’s a medium worth exploring. also big kudos to Pinny cuz the cinematography was actually fantastic. the close-ups of NPCs genuinely moved me and brought up tears when paired with the monologues. truly amazing stuff

this whole endeavor very much reminded me of the Yogscast minecraft saga i dearly loved as a child <3

the portrayal of depressive self-sabotage in this film was so well done it had me crawling in my skin wishing i could reach out and alter llewyn’s course. however even those in his filmographical universe couldn’t shift his trajectory no matter how much they might’ve wanted to

the cyclical nature of it all was probably the most devastating part, cuz that’s exactly how depression is. just as Mac Miller’s final projects explored, you’re just Swimming in Circles until the bell tolls

i honestly wasn’t in love with this film until about the final act. i definitely thought it was a good movie, especially technically speaking. but after finishing it and stepping back to let the details simmer, i can affirm that this film will color the threads of my tapestry for years to come

a mind-bending, stomach-churning film that worms its way into your flesh and then wriggles + writhes around for a 90 minute runtime that feels way more like 3hrs

such a profoundly surreal way to portray the story being told, so much so that it took an embarrassingly long time before i pieced it all together lol. though i still have too many questions to track, i think that’s kind of the point

although the gross and disconcerting are usually not my thing, the artistry on display can’t be denied. lynch’s background in painting is quite prevalent and so many of these scenes feel more like still images that move rather than moving images. it also feels much older than a mid-70’s film in a very satisfying way

rest in peace mr. lynch you beautifully deranged bastard. i am so grateful for the works you have created and the ways in which your soul stained the world of art. you are a master of the craft of Life and we still have much to learn from you
enjoy your reunion with the moon 🤍
