Confirms my belief that Jeffrey Wright is a top 3 member of Wes Anderson’s troupe. Scene stealing work here.

Also, despite some similar aesthetics, I found this as more of an evolution of his Roald Dahl shorts than Asteroid City. It’s silly, kinetic and shockingly violent (first five minutes had me cackling). Still, unlike the above titles or other recent works like The French Dispatch or The Grand Budapest Hotel, the lack of any narrative-framing device made me question this a lot more than other Anderson works.

Kind of beautiful. The people interviewed outside are all so uniquely different in how they answer the same question, “What makes you happy?” Without ever seeming disingenuous or repetitive. Could’ve seen these two nuns interview people across the U.S., but what’s left is an interesting time capsule of people in Chicago. Unshockingly, most people’s sense of unhappiness stemmed from their disapproval of the war in Vietnam. Wonder if there might be some modern similarities…

Go in as blind as possible, and you'll find a staggeringly sweet and endearing film, one that, after it's most famous scene, left me crying all the way into the end credits. A fable about multitudes, memory and the stars.

One of my absolute favorites of the year, and I hope that it finds similar love.

A gorgeously shot, strikingly thoughtful pro-union picture that completely blew me away. At 52-years old, this film still feels insanely timely and necessary, and while a “small story,” the LARGE cast of extras and background performers really make this picture feel grand and momentous, even as things start crashing down. Features an incredibly pessimistic but pointed ending that is just tremendous.

Eager to rewatch again.

Work. EASILY my favorite of this year's Sundance Shorts Tour. Love the blend of hand-drawn and CGI in a black-and-white, punkish world, and the central "anti-romance" is heart-breaking even if it's meaningless. Really LOVED this short.

As I've always said, when a film leans towards the After Hours structure for a story, the more happy I am.

Would love to see Jan Saska move into the world of feature films, because I love his voice, style and storytelling in this short.

Love hearing about Francis Ford Coppola's odd mango-eating habits. Wonderful documentary.

One of the most “sauce-filled” movies released this decade. From a nitpicky filmmaker perspective, this is a movie rampant with ADR, odd edits, and disappearing/reappearing people. It’s a messy movie with an “on-paper” odd structure that should lead to pacing problems, or should leave you confused once the tone shifts.

And yet, this movie kicks ass. A film does not need to be perfect to be perfect. So incredibly happy that Sinners has become a phenomenon.

Saw the Director’s Cut in a (surprise) one night only theatrical screening. Absolutely ate this up, love me some big action epics. Had a hard time even imagining how 45-minutes were cut from this. Loved essentially every scene with The King, and seeing Michael Sheen catch on fire is always a great way to start a film. A very pure Ridley Scott picture.

Really and truly stunning, cried immensely during the last third. A collection of delectable and colorful costumed characters set within some of the most gorgeous locations on earth, told through suicide and storytelling. Fucking terrific editing, cinematography and production design, centered around a moving and expertly grounded child performance that’s one of the best in any picture. LOVED The Fall.

For a film shot and edited within a year (very fast for documentaries) to be better and far more urgent than most films in this medium is astounding. An almost heroic take down of propaganda raised by politicians, the police and various universities (primarily Columbia, Eric Adams and the NYPD) and an appraisal of the community found within these encampments fighting for those in Gaza and the West Bank and celebrating Palestinian culture. The comparisons between this and the Vietnam protests should be obvious to all.

For 75% of this film’s runtime, it’s possibly the best adaptation of any video game into another medium. I mean, it’s perfect. It helps the music is *chef’s kiss.* I think an Animal Crossing animated series could do wonders.

Needed more Tom Nook tho. Also made me sad we don’t get to see much of Mr. Resetti these days…

An incredible moment few bring up:
After ing by some jailed men on the road (another example, alongside the share cropping, of a lack of freedom), Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo) recollects about a friend of his lynched at a train station because of a lie. As Slim talks, we hear the screams of the lynching. It's subtle, but it's horrifying. Yet, it also forces Slim to start humming, to start beating a rhythm. Music coming from pain. An absolutely beautiful scene featuring one of the greatest actors in anything. Love me some Lindo.

Jumping from Saw to Saw X and thinking “wow, that John Kramer sure has a good point!”

I also appreciate that the first forty-five minutes of Saw X are basically “looks like everything’s coming up Milhouse” for Kramer. Oddly nice and very much not a horror film, until it very much is. This is the exact kind of fun-goopy-horror that also makes me scream “oh god, not the leg! OOOOOHHHH FUCK!”

Gonna have the hot take that this is an inherently political film, whether the directors or certain others disbelieve in it. Warfare’s view is pretty against that pointless war, paired alongside the idea that “military brotherhood” can only save you from death, but not from trauma or pain. I’ve heard some say that this and Civil War are Rorschach tests for the viewer, able to put their own opinions into whatever the film shows, but come on. There’s no beauty in the brutality, only once does an enemy Iraqi soldier get visually killed, and there’s little heroism except in the (second-attempt) success of an evacuation. Nothing is achieved, leaving a civilian’s home destroyed, and leaving a street scarred with the body and blood of a blown-apart Iraqi-American soldier, the only solider killed in this memory.

Warfare is a film about memory, so what else could this be than filmic PTSD. The screams in this will be what I forever this film for.

Further proof I should not go skydiving. Preferred Matt & Mara, but this is still one heck of a picture from Kazik Radwanski. Deragh Campbell continues being excellent here, and Matt Johnson continues to be so calmly and perfectly charismatic. The “cringe” here is really tough though.

Basically a Wes Anderson blockbuster. The shots following Steve and Ned around the ship are fucking awesome. Technically, this is Anderson's most ambitious, and the Jaguar Shark scene is still one of his all-time best. I think my feelings for it have slipped a bit (I think I prefer his follow-up, The Darjeeling Limited), but I still hold firm that Anderson has yet to make a film worse than "really good."

Also got to Intro this film at the Garfield with my friend Adam Sweeney! Also did that at The Royal Tenembaums a week prior, but man is it fun to the guy spouting Wes Anderson history like Steve Zissou correctly naming underwater creatures.
