Just like all of Bresson’s work, I love it even more on rewatch. Feels like such a coalescence of Bresson’s whole body of work. It has the quest-for-transcendence qualities of early Bresson like A Man Escaped and Diary of a Country Priest, it has the qualities of mid-Bresson where you are a prisoner of the screen, watching injustices you can’t control like in Au Hasard Balthazar and A Gentle Woman, and then has the almost post-modernist cynicism of late stage Bresson like The Devil Probably.

Great film from one of the greats

I really wanted to like this because I felt like a reboot was exactly what this messy franchise needed, but unfortunately this movie is really bad.

Gone is the subtlety of the original film. Instead of “The Shape” being a mysterious entity of evil, Rob Zombie decides to give Michael Myers a backstory explaining why Michael is evil. Overall I don’t think that decision is necessary, I think it could’ve been an okay set up. But Zombie’s ingenious backstory for Michael is that his dad is abusive and he gets bullied out school. (Wow, so profound!) I suppose there are themes of class in his backstory as well, but it’s never explored any more than the surface level.

While I do like Michael’s physical prowess in this film, I think I still prefer the originals more ominous vibe rather than this films brutal physicality. However Michael is definitely very imposing and terrifying in this film and that is definitely a highlight.

I think the writing in this film is really atrocious. Horror is the genre that allows for some of the most extreme and provocative expressions, but this film doesn’t handle them very well. A lot of this dialogue just feels disturbing just to be disturbing. “I’ll come over there and skullfuck the shit out of you” cmon dog why did you write that line? There’s also the scene of Michael escaping depicting the ward guards graphically raping a woman in Michaels room? This isn’t artistically provocative, that’s a scene written by an edgy middle schooler who thinks they understand horror movies

Every 2 things this movie did amazing it did 1 thing bad, so overall I still liked it but it has its issues. I love that these Halloween films still focus on actually trying to be scary. The way they build tension in these using Michaels stalking style will always make these better than more run and gun slashers where the kills are quick and constant. LL Cool J was absolutely the highlight of the film.

However I felt like Laurie’s son (played by Josh Hartnett in his film debut) was so annoying and we spent way too long with him for him to serve little purpose by the end of the film. I also don’t like Michael’s look here. Idk it looks like his mask is balding? And it doesn’t fit on his face as well? Idk it just didn’t really look good enough for me. Also apparently Michael’s actor is 6’2 but he didn’t feel as physically imposing. Maybe it’s the way he’s shot, maybe it’s the way the actor carries himself, but maybe I’m thinking too deep into it.

Fine movie!

It’s themes are rich and could’ve been profound, but every time there was an amazing scene it was followed with another scene hamfistingly explaining the previous scene and what it meant, even though it was readily apparent what the scene was getting across. Giulietta Masina is one of the most magnetic and electrifying performers of all time. I’m so enamored by her ability to create joy from simple movements while surrounded by hate and darkness. She felt like she carried the jovial slapstick-esque style of silent Chaplin into sound pictures, and also was able to capture that dark melancholy within the whimsy.

I didn’t expect this film to be as grim as it was. Knowing it’s about the circus and seeing Giulietta Masina’s joyful performance for the first half set me up for failure watching the ending of this film that truly broke me.

One of the greatest, most monumental epics in all of cinema. A grand tragedy pointing at the heart of human hatred and deceit. The boiling pot of treachery, lies, and greed that force the world into a Sisyphus esque cycle of torment and bloodshed.

Watching this in theaters was such a one of a kind experience. I drove 4 hours to see this and I would’ve driven even farther if I had to. One of the greatest films ever by one of the greatest directors ever.

The climactic fight is wild and crazy and a lot of fun. But I think I’d enjoy this film more of the attacks had more weight to them. Getting hit by one of them just means you get flung across the room rather than having an actual real impact. I know that seems like a small gripe but the feeling of impact of a kill is the most important part and this would’ve been much better with that.

It also would have been much better if it had a competent script and good actors, which it has neither

This is Tarkovsky’s favorite film so of course I’m gonna love it too, but on rewatch I found even more to appreciate.

This, alongside Andrei Rublev, are in my opinion the two greatest theistic films, although you don’t have to be religious to appreciate them at all. I’m not religious myself anymore but I found great profoundness in this film regardless.

Being a young priest struggling to connect makes us wonder how any of us have authority, especially when it comes to God. The clergy are the closest to God and people turn to them for guidance in their faith, but what of a priest whose faith is deteriorating? How can a priest be the authority of God when God is the real authority? But in that case that means God has abandoned us, leaving us alone with the scraps of understanding that the clergy try to piece together.

But like they say in this film, God is not a torturer. The torment we feel is our own doing, but even so, it still feels as if God has abandoned us.

What a profoundly rich and thematically prolific film. It’s one that you think about for weeks after watching.

Bresson truly was one of the greatest

With the previous installments being directed by Brian De Palma and John Woo, having this one be directed by JJ Abram’s is a bit of a step down for me. I don’t think he’s a bad director but his frenetic and chaotic style with the annoying backlighting just doesn’t hold up against De Palma and Woo’s much better style. The worst one in the franchise so far. Obviously extremely formulaic like all of the films in this franchise are, but this one stands out for [i suppose this is a spoiler but you really shouldn’t care about the fifth Friday the 13th movie being spoiled] not actually having Jason as the real killer. That’s literally the only thing cool about this franchise.

Now I could go on and talk about the questionable and potentially dangerous depiction of mental health, showing people with mental illnesses as dangerous, violent, and erratic, but honestly that’s a common problem with many horror films and I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the fifth Friday the 13th movie doesn’t have a positive depiction of mental health.

But what I can say is that the group of characters were SO LAME except for like 2 of them. I know all of these movies have bad characters that are just there to die, but these were probably the worst batch.

Also this film is SO sleazy. It’s not surprising at all that the director of this movie also directed porn. Like why did she take her shirt off and then the camera lingers on her topless for like 5 minutes and then she dies.

Also that ending was stupid as fuck.

Why am I writing so much about this movie.

Terrence Malick has never been the most accesible filmmaker, but particularly his post-Tree of Life films like this and Knight of Cup’s are particularly esoteric with their fragmented and disted edition style, lack of narrative through-line, and formed with Malick’s unabashedly singular style, knowing that many people would dismiss these films at trivial and pretentious hogwash.

But Malick seems to be tapping into a form of filmmaking that hasn’t been explored enough. Exploring the lives of the characters through fractals of memory crudely coned in the edit. Catching dozens of glimpses of scenes that allow us to feel those moments so deeply and extrapolate an entire life from those fragmented scenes. And despite the lack of a solid narrative, that extrapolation is the narrative. The story of our lives is understood by ourselves only through the memory fractals, pieced together and broken down and then taped back together by our own brains, trying to find that meaning it had through our subjective biases and understanding of both the world and ourselves

Marvel fatigue has really set in heavily as of late. I used to be a rapid fan of the MCU, seeing every single one of them in theaters up until endgame. The original Iron Man came out when I was 8 years old and it’s one of my favorite early theater experiences. It’s been hard growing up and watching the franchise I was so obsessed with devolve into a corporate slop machine. But it always made me wonder what changed, if the films themselves degraded in quality, if I just got older and more mature, or if my general film tastes have changed so much in the past few years that I don’t view them as highly anymore. It makes me wonder if how I feel about the old movies is entirely clouded by my nostalgia.

Does Thunderbolts show us being back? Not really, but it’s definitely not a bad movie by any means. I had a whole lot of fun. The highlight of this film was definitely the comedy. The comedic timing, especially of Florence Pugh and David Harbor is incredible and gave a lot of charm to this film. There were many parts where I was genuinely laughing out loud. The action was solid too, as in enjoying the more grounded approach as opposed to the incessant multiverse mumbo jumbo. It’s always fun seeing a ragtag group of characters come together. And while the cinematography wasn’t groundbreaking, it generally had better shots than many marvel movies which look like empty parking lots half the time.

I don’t think this film does anything bad really, more just mediocre at times. When it’s not being funny, the emotional moments felt too by the numbers. Like yes the themes were present and the emotion was there, but it just felt relatively safe and surface level for the themes presented. Oooo the villain turned kinda evil because they were abused as a kid, so groundbreaking! And not that you can’t make a villain origin like that, but I wish they delved into the themes a little bit more. The films resolution left me wanting more. The resolution being sentry facing the void is good in concept but felt relatively lackluster and surface level.

Although it has its pitfalls into mediocrity at times, I still had a good time watching this movie. It didn’t make me feel like the first few MCU phases made me feel, but it makes me wonder if that’s just a fact of my cynicism towards the franchise as whole now rather than the individual movies issue.

The New World 4j5t6t 2005 - ★★★★ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/sinjun_chapman/film/the-new-world/ letterboxd-review-886662856 Tue, 13 May 2025 03:25:39 +1200 2025-05-12 No The New World 2005 4.0 11400 <![CDATA[

I think what sets this film apart from Disney’s Pocahontas in of its portrayal of indigenous peoples is for 2 main reasons.

Firstly, unlike the Disney film, The New World is not a film striking a moral stance. It’s not a parable teaching right and wrong, it’s a complex tapestry of love, nature, and humanity. Disneys Pocahontas on the other hands is a parable about how both white people and indigenous people can be bad (Both sides-ing genocide is crazy work disney)

The other reason is that I think Terrence Malick has mastered the cameras eye so well that he somehow has unlocked a third perspective in film. Normally there’s using film to portray a characters perspective (comparable to writing in first person in a book) and then there’s an omniscient camera (comparable the third person in literature). But Malick somehow has this third, difficult to describe perspective. It’s omniscience but also doesn’t know anything. Rather than an all-knowing objective view of god or an in-universe subjective human view, it’s this curious view that’s neither in, nor above the film. It observes in the most unique way and detaches itself from black and white morality and taking sides

The paradox of modernity

Modern technologies have made us more connected than ever, both physically in our use of modern transportation that allows any person to traverse the world at historically unmatched speeds, from cars to boats to planes to trains, and digitally we are in an overbearingly connected globalized world where we can and track any person around the entire globe with what is in our pocket. We are more connected than we could have ever dreamed, and yet we couldn’t be more alienated from each other.

This is the first Malick film I’ve seen where it’s set in modern times. All of his works previously have been set in the 1950s or earlier, and it felt like Malick’s signature style of sweeping, engrossing nature shots and transcendently spiritual connection with the land and each other was perfectly suited for period pieces. So it’s interesting to see Malick’s style being portrayed in our hyper modern world, a world seemingly so devoid of what makes his style so noteworthy.

We have utilized technologies to make our lives earlier since the inception of civilization. From the plow, to the wheel, to irrigation systems, even our earliest ancestors utilized tools to speed up tedium and improve our lives. Now technology has advanced to the point where all our basic needs are met with excess and at instant speeds. We have solved the issue of our struggle for survival to a point where we don’t have to think about it on a daily basis. Technology has given us all the opportunities to explore our own existence because we no longer need the physical and mental energy for survival. Our ability to find meaning in the world and in our lives should be more apparent with modern comforts covering all our bases. But now that we have all the time in the world to find meaning, we created a world that lacks any meaning.

Our muted, concrete world has alienated us from each other and from the world. Our feet don’t touch the ground, our hands don’t touch the dirt. How can we find meaning in our humanity without a connection to each other and our world? We’ve created a world where we are endlessly lost in the city where we live and found while looking out at the endless expanse of ocean. The natural world is more foreign than ever and yet it may be the only place we feel at home.

Our dissociation has driven away any chance of human connection to the point where sex has become vapid. Our most intimate act, driven by a primal desire to survive and live on, one of our most powerful ways of connecting with another person, has become a shallow and hollow act that is so readily available and commodified. Any attempt at connection is shrouded in a sleek, post modern beige box with a price tag.

With all the information in the world, with all of the people in the world at our disposal, we have never been more lost.

... for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

I think this film works best because it’s based on a true story. Without the historical verity, this film would lack a lot of depth, but since it is based in truth, A Hidden Life is deeply moving and sorrowfully inspiring.

The aspect of this film that really stuck with me was them telling Franz that he won’t be ed. Being a conscientious objector isn’t a flashy and memorable thing that would necessarily make a memorable story, but Franz was steadfast and brave because he stood for what was right. It’s an inspiring idea that yes we stand on the shoulders of the great historic figures that shaped the world, but we also stand on the unmarked graves of those much braver than any recognizable name. It’s a powerful thought that we have the power to shape the world even with our seemingly hopeless, limited, and unremarkable impact.

I do feel like this film is a tad too long, and would’ve worked better as a 2hour film, however there is much to be said about the longevity of the film strengthening the feeling of never ending torment and elevating the impact of Franz’s unwavering rigidity.

It’s only Days of Heaven, because an eternity in Heaven doesn’t exist for man.

The landscape of this film is evocative of freedom. An expanse of beauty, a horizon of endless roaming. And yet that very expanse was what locked them into both a paradise and a cage. Sticking out of that endless horizon is the farmers house, pervading every shot, and jutting out as an ivory tower of the expansive ocean of wheat.

Beneath the boot of capitalism, this is a prison. While the love between Bill and Abby is strong, the desire to break from that cage forces them to pervert their love and claw their way to the money. And once they have that money the cage becomes a paradise. The wheat fields are no longer a cage, but an ocean of freedom and joy.

But that joy was founded on prioritizing coin over love, and humanities desire for selfish love causes paradise to crumble. As if a biblical punishment for their evils, a swarm of locust engulfs their heaven, but that’s not what destroys it. The continued jealousy and insecurity causes man to destroy is own palace, and heaven burns down.

This was so much fun and so engaging. Hitchcock’s 30s films seem to be much more fun (not necessarily better, just more fun) than his later more well known works. Even though there were gunshots and espionage and murder, this film is so funny and just a lot of fun throughout trying to unravel the mystery.

But what really stole the show was the two gay guys who were annoyed with all the murder because it made them late for a cricket game.
