Fucking incredible!! It feels maybe a little dated for when it came out. More a classic John Ford western than what would come in the late 60s and 70s. But when all of that time was 60-70 years ago it plays soo well as an issues driven, but also just an exciting and harrowing cowboy picture. 

Sure there are a couple things that keep it from being perfect. Paul Newman dressed up to look Native at the start of the film is a little jarring. Balsams never above putting on a cartoonish accent (he’s great at it), or the fact that Frank Silvera, who gives one of the best performances in the movie, is credited as Mexican Bandit.

This was so much fun and maybe one of my all time favorites of the genre now.

Was this dumped by A24 or have I not been paying attention? Typically I think I have my ear to the ground on these kinda things but this pretty much got past me. 

Point is: I’m either woefully unaware or I expect this to be a cult classic. 

It’s beautiful, odd, hilarious, great performances throughout. 

Really promising stuff from Klein who clearly has great taste, and knack for conjuring the same sensibilities as a Mike Nichols.

Very exciting

I just knew this movie would end with a title card explaining that actually Las Vegas has been quite successful. 

Vanity project for Beatty but I don’t think he pulls off this kinda tough guy. Every times he looses it the movie strains credulity.

Not with out its great moments though. 

Gould was heartbreaking as bit of an oafish stooge.

Not a movie that I would say where the characters are particularly nuanced. The son in particular is saddled with some dialogue that doesn’t do him any favors. 

I like Chris Sullivan. He reminds me of my self in a lot of his roles, but maybe none more than here in girl dad mode. 

Interesting for one of Soderberghs experimental exercises. Camera as character is a conceit that I usually find pretty engaging

Some real powerful performances across the board, but particularly from Widmark right off the bat, Schell throughout channeling the fire and intensity of Hitler himself in the court scenes, and then a real showstopper from Lancaster when he gets his day. 

Spencer Tracy is such a great choice to hold it all together at the center. 

It’s beyond my understanding how a person can watch this movie (or could have ever watched this movie) and not see the parallels to the way some people talk on the political right today in America. 

The history is right there and it’s on film.

I must have an allergy to Paul Schrader. 

There’s a way to tell this story with out Dafoes character and his narration, and I like it better.

Didn’t clear the bar that had been placed by the hype. I needed more than just the (very impressive) one-take conceit. 
Ultimately most akin to a visualization of my adhd brain when I walk back and forth from room to room and I never actually accomplish anything.
The ending felt unearned and little like a cop out.

Kate Mara is so incredible. In everything, but particularly in this. I’m trying to think of a comedy wife that is even similar to what she’s doing. 

I’ve only ever seen Eric Robinson clips on socials. I really enjoy them but probably can’t call myself a fan. The best thing I can say about this movie is how unpredictable it was. So refreshing.

I laughed out loud a fair amount despite being one of two people in the theater.

Heavyweight cast with George Sanders, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price and Ida Lupino all in ing roles. Most of whom are scheming and competing for power and influence in the wake of a media mogul’s death. While at the same time a psychopathic killer of women is on the loose. 
I think the ethics in journalism movie AND the serial killer crime movie are a little too much for the frame of the film to . Both plot lines feel a little unfulfilled, the performances are tonally all over the place, and the film has its share convenient contrivances to quickly bring resolution. 
That said, it moves quick, it’s entertaining and there’s some well deployed tension as to be expected from Lang.

Tense and disorienting allegorical western.
I enjoyed quite a bit more than Hellmans other 80min pairing with Jack Nicholson, despite Ride in the Whirlwinds more compelling premise. 
Leans heavy on the brutality and difficulty of just existing out there. 
The eeriness and the performances, and the ending lend a lot to sink in to.

There’s a food scene that has to be one of the most revolting things I’ve ever seen.

Apart from that I found this to be a very silly thing.

This was on heavy rotation as a kid. 
It always catches me off guard when these 90s disney movies get a little outta pocket with lines like “the atmosphere is a little more bouncy today” over a shot of women jumping in slow motion. 
It’s a mindless kids sports movie. Not the best of its era, but certainly not the worst. Cast is a lot of fun.

Rough transfer on prime but a film that i found kinda charming. 
I was born in Brooklyn, raised in Texas and was looking for something short to watch before bed. I liked it enough to turn off and save for later. Guy isn’t much to talk about but Diane is winning and lovely. Plus there’s a bunch of fun people who drop in so unceremoniously, like the wicked witch and Fred from I Love Lucy.
Ultimately just a an unfocused misfire that I don’t recommend.

Oh so this has just been ripped off for the pst 80 years. 
There’s a cool No Country moment. A great History of Violence moment. 
Such incredible dialogue.
Even before you see Lancasters face, he’s dropping bangers from the shadows.
One of the coolest films I’ve seen.
Ava Gardner with an incredible and wide ranging performance.

Some of the funniest dialogue of the year, but when the stories finally converge and things start falling together it becomes some touching and beautiful. All the absurdity sort of slips away to unveil this profound and universal emotional truth about community and care.

No knock on DDL, but Keanu could’ve delivered this performance and it might have made the movie better but it definitely would’ve made the culture better.

Rachel McAdams is one of the most natural physical comedians I’ve ever seen. She’s beautiful but she also has an ability to, for example, be effortlessly startled in a way that’s so charming and funny.

I think a lot of cast is left with little to do, but McAdams and Ford deliver.

Also, my wife said this was the first time she’s
found Harrison Ford attractive. Not sure yet what to do with that information.

Not awful but absent of the charm I was hoping for and expecting. More puzzling than anything else.

The boy’s been really into sword fighting recently. He’s watched a bit of Jake and The Neverland Pirates so I figured I’d throw this on. 

Peter Pan and the Lost Boys are pretty insufferable. Maybe in away that was funny in the 50s but I thought they were just annoying. And Peter in no way was heroic or courageous, but rather just kind of a self-centered egotistical child, as one might be if they were an orphan in charge of leading other orphans in an endless battle against ruthless pirates. But this is the animated movie for kids, not the gritty realistic reboot. 

Not worth revisiting again.

The only thing I knew about the movie was it was, at least in part, based on the real life of Batman ‘89 producer, Jon Peters. I feel the same way about hyper-specific and accent work, it doesn’t matter if it’s accurate if it distracts from the film or performance. Beatty's hair is real problem, but if you look at Peters you understand the choice. 

What I wasn’t prepared for was pre-Star Wars Carrie Fisher dropping hard F-slurs, and asking Warren Beatty if he wants to fuck.

I’m not a fan of Beatty, but I think the other performances are super. The relationships are complicated in of which ones are affairs and which ones are supposedly committed. But Ashby gets some good comedy outta that. 

Ultimately an interesting artifact with some great performances, Julie Christie and Jack Warden specifically.

It’s so crazy that Tony Curtis talks like that.
Real dark movie full of shitheels and scumbags. 
The scene where Curtis basically pimps out Rita the cigarette girl is bleak!

I imagine this felt so modern when it came out, not just with the references to computer dating, but it’s entire depiction of suburban life right up to having to cross the freeway to get home. 

I don’t mean to say the film feels dated. I think there’s a lot of relevance to the notion of clinging to vitality. To the shame and contrition that men feel, maybe at all stages of their life(?).

As I get older and think about my life I think of it in stages. Where I was. How I acted. My relationships. My beliefs. I also think about my family the same way. Much like Ned talks about his daughters playing tennis, I think of my daughters swimming as kids. They’re teens now. Their childhood is over. Everything ends. 
Lancaster's raw vulnerability is something incredible. I feel so uncomfortable. I’m embarrassed for him and yet it’s clear he’s hurt so many. It seems like what ever he’s experiencing in this film is going to either be the beginning or the end of what ever stage comes next for him.

The way my wife deeply and immediately identified with this character. 
It was great. She’d only been there a week, Judy!

Peter Boyle as Toby Ziegler and Robert Redford as Sam Seaborn in… THE CANDIDATE.

What delight it must be to see the world through David Byrne’s eyes.

The people who play are noble and heroic.
The people who watch are dork ass losers.

This is the theme of The Set Up. And as someone who loves sports, I agree.

Audrey Hepburn hits her hip on that banister every time she walks past it. Acting!!

There’s a fair about of tension, it’s pretty fun. Arkin is on one!
My biggest problem was that it never seemed like the darkness gave Hepburns character an advantage which calls into question the name of the movie.

In other submarine movies it feels like so much tension is built in the defensive and counter maneuvers. Like it seems really difficult to hit a ship with torpedo. In this movie it seems like they just line up and fire with no warning. Which is way more jarring and terrifying especially if you’re living day-to-day on a boat that at any moment could be blown up without a moments notice. 

The radio message from Tokyo Rose is just as chilling as anything I’ve heard. 

Sometimes the boats look like bath toys but it’s easily forgiven.

Oh my god!

I was expecting a talkie, contained, ransom drama. I’d heard the conceit: a man agrees to pay a ransom for his son until he discovers the kidnappers have made a mistake and grabbed the son of his driver instead. That alone is so psychologically compelling. And the first hour of the movie is just that. And it’s incredible. It’s blocked in such a dynamic manner that you feel your eyes darting around all corners of the screen. It makes this interior set feel alive and electric. 

Then the turn happens, unfortunately at this point we pretty much lose Toshiro Mifune, which is a shame, but the movie bursts open first into a thrilling cat and mouse cop procedural, in to a terrifying horror movie, and culminating with this two handed scene about pride, inequality, faith and regret. 
 
The visual ideas are next level. Having seen Ikiru and Roshamon (and loving both films) I actually feel like I get the Kurosawa hype now. An incredible filmmaker not just the maker of incredible films.

Higher highs than most movies.

Dang. Florence Pugh is a good actor. First MCU that felt like a movie in a little while. 
I definitely didn’t have all my homework done beforehand (Bucky’s in congress?), and I have no idea who Sentry is from comics, but I thought he was deployed well both thematically and visually. 

Also Wyatt Russell looks so much like his dad that there are subtle looks and glances that just make me happy to watch him on screen.
Also also, Sebastian Stan coming in like T2 fuckin ruled.

When I say that I don’t really like comedies, of course I mean that I hold exception for comedies released by Focus Features.

I was worried that one later scene of dialogue from a side character would derail the whole experience but ultimately it didn’t matter. Which sucks because it’s a bad scene that doesn’t impact the plot, but on the bright side, it doesn’t impact the plot. As the credits rolled Wallis Island was exactly what I was hoping for. I like when these kind of musical films bring a song back to illustrate different emotional purposes, done really effectively in this.

What a discovery Tim Key is for me. I’d like to see him in everything now. Thank you.

To paraphrase The Beatles “There goes the sun.

I don’t the last time I wanted something from a movie as bad as I want that little Ochi. I think the puppetry and the physical craft of the film are unimpeachable. 

Maybe it’s brought on a little by what Dafoe is bringing, but there’s definitely a whimsy a la Wes Anderson, but it’s not funny or very quirky. It’s more darkly emotional. And without the humor I was maybe hoping for more grand fantastical adventure. 

Just didn’t fully land for me.

Yeah. Pretty cute.

All political machinations aside, which are great, it’s just one of the best movies I’ve ever seen about fathers. One of my favorite watches of the year so far.

Vincent Cassel saying “wow!” 35 times, with that haircut, was just too much for my brain to not think of Christopher Walken. And once that happens it’s pretty much game over. 

I think there’s something true and profound about technology prolonging the experience of grief. I like the ideas just not so much the shape they come in.

All I knew about this was the iconic beach image, and therefore had no idea this was a military (or more specifically Pearl Harbor) movie. I think Lancaster and Donna Reed were pretty great, I’m still waiting for Clift to click with me. I’m not sure I got the pain and regret that film told me the character actually possesses.

Poppy reminded me a lot of (though I couldn’t put my finger on a direct example) of an overbearing, always-on, type of British man whose energy is typically an effort to overcome or overshadow an insecurity. The Hawkins character while seemingly pretty similar, actually feels genuine in moments where she discusses her life and her happiness. It seems she’s developed way of being, informed by the relationships with her parents and siblings, but the daffy positivity isn’t a mask. 
I was curious to see how this film would look coming from a filmmaker like Mike Liegh, but only a someone with great understanding of the cracks and pitfalls of human emotions can craft characters as specific and as genuine as someone like Poppy.

Maybe the only white guy in my theater. Maybe not the only one who kinda thought Jack O'Connell had a point.

Was not prepared for this to be about the transcendental nature and power of music in culture.

I think it’s probably my favorite superhero movie of all time. It’s definitely the most beautiful. It’s a Tim Burton aesthetic but the German expressionism and universal monster-ness of the film works so well for Gotham and especially the reveal of the Joker. Makes the movie feel so timeless. 

I also recently read Batman Resurrection. Which is a follow-up novel taking place in the immediate aftermath of the end of this film. Hard rec if you love the movie.

TLJ can’t help but be a presence, but almost nothing in this movie works and some of it is down right objectionable.
Dad recommended it based on seeing it 40 years ago and Olivier being his favorite actor.

“Oh god just kill him already” 
A phrase a muttered a number of time throughout the movie. Carradine can’t lead a napoleonic war drama, and Keitel isnt present enough to be able to attempt (and honestly not great when he is around). 
Just kinda dull. pales in comparison to its contemporaries.

I hate calling movies or TV “important,” but I think this is really well made wake up call for parents of young kids. All hands on deck. No days off.

Has some Barbra Loden “Wanda” energy but I was pretty annoyed by the ending.

Not saying this is a double feature i recommend doing, but I thought a lot about Hard Truths watching this. And just the nature of centering the most difficult people as the protagonist of your film.  
Makes you wonder how Johnny's life would be different if he were a middle-aged black woman.

To say an Almodóvar film is rich and complex while boasting soap opera melodrama is just redundant, and still Volver is so exciting and surprising and emotional. I always love the lusciousness of his films but when they dial up the emotional regret and catharsis I kinda just melt.

The boy has shown interest in volcanoes so we threw this on this morning. He wasn’t locked in 100% of the time but after someone kept referring to the lake of fire he yelled, “That’s not fire! It’s HOT LAVA!”

As punishing  a war movie as I’ve ever seen. My ears are ringing and I feel a bit shaken. 

The conceit of being “based on true memories” is pretty effective seeing as it really plays on the chaotic confusion/haze that memory often is. 

I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.

Impressive amount of plates this film is spinning. 
Character story feels a little miscalibrated. Doesn’t feel like there’s a strong lead who you’re experiencing this world through, which isn’t inherently bad but I felt a little in-or-out especially on the Joel McCrea plot.
