Godzilla Minus One

A film that simultaneously honours the majesty of Godzilla and the tragedy of World War II. Takashi Yamazaki delivers a blockbuster worthy of the tributes it pays to a certain Mr. Spielberg.

Enjoyable and well rounded characters exist in a traumatized Japan, laden with post-war guilt and that's where Godzilla Minus One really excels. Yamazaki rejects the need to anthropomorphize the titular character and instead trusts his characters to do the heavy-lifting. That's not to say that we don't get…

I was well aware of the negative reception the film had received before sitting down to watch this and yet, somehow, this was still worse than I expected.

I've sat on this for a couple of days because I was so irritated after watching and I didn't want emotions to cloud my thoughts...
.... it hasn't helped in the slightest.

David Gordon Green, what in the world are we going to do with you? You can't just be going around…

★★★★½ Liked Rewatched

It may have been almost a decade since my last rewatch of Tarantino's seminal debut but it still remains as captivating and charismatically brutal as it was when I first caught this.

QT is far more reserved in his signature style here (to be expected for a first outing) which doesn't detract from the film but instead allows for more focus on the sharp dialogue and tense character interaction.

With the exception of the director's cameo, which is relatively minor,…

Gangs of New York

I haven't seen Scorsese's work in it's entirety (boooo) but Gangs of New York has to be one of his most ambitious projects in of both scale and depth.

The production design is spectacular and is only overshadowed by Daniel Day-Lewis once again reminding everyone why is heralded as one of the greatest actors of all time. While Day-Lewis' attempt may fall short of what he would achieve five years later in There Will Be Blood, he still delivers…

Nosferatu

2024 has been a seminal year for Horror fans and Eggers refuses to be left out of the conversation.

It would be very easy to beat Nosferatu with the 'it's been done before' stick but I believe that taking a text with such recognizable significance to cinema and still being able to elevate it must surely be one of the hardest skills for a filmmaker to master and by God does Eggers knock this one out of the park.

I adored this. Not going into a full on review/breakdown because I genuinely wouldn't know where to begin and I intend to revisit this a plenty, so I'll get my chance again.

I will say that it was just on the edge of losing me (near the end of the second act) but it won me right back and then some!

This goes all the fuckin way, acting and production. What an amazing year for horror fans.
