Not to discount Lakeith Stanfield’s comedy chops, but it’s the second David Oyelowo appears as John the Baptist that the film turns from light-hearted into laugh-out-loud hilarious. Still, it manages to hold some real weight in its comparisons of the Roman soldiers in ancient Jerusalem to contemporary police in Black communities.
Hoooooooooooly shit.
This is not a film for everyone, and indeed may not even be for many people, but by fucking hell was it very much for me.
I might watch this again and give it five stars. I’ve rarely been so goddamn exhilarated by cinema, and that’s what it’s all about, right?!
