A breath of fresh air after the intensity of The Devils, a hilarious pastiche on the model Asian American family all filtered through colourful artificial sets, soap opera like melodramatics and an underground sensibility. Real care for the characters too, the perfect son hiding a big secret seems to be a joke before coming to feel like the heart of the film. Fantastic dual performance by Moritsugu, the characters so different it's a shock to see they're played by the same man. Very excited to get into the Moritsugu boxset I got from AGFA.

Ken Russell's exhausted and exhausting tale of brutality, vengeance and hypocritical horniness, censored and cut to ribbons. It feels illegal somehow, but that might just be the Catholic school boy in me still shocked at nuns violating a Jesus statue even if I find a frisson of delicious naughtiness to it. Russell's vision is tough and uncompromising and so intense I struggled to take it in at the early afternoon Static Vision slot. Will need a rewatch one day, when…
