Literally god tier directing, writing—everything—in every film I have seen of his, in like every genre. It’s absurd.

As long as I’m not forgetting anything, Some Like It Hot is by far the best comedy I have ever seen in my life. I’m convinced any person, at any age, from any culture would find this funny asf. I know everyone who watches it says this exact thing, but for some reason, I a tiny bit doubted it.

I can’t believe I only gave this 3⭐️ on my first watch. 28 Days Later is probably the greatest zombie film ever made, along with being one of the best horror films. The church scene is truly one of the best and scariest villain introductions (kinda) in film.

200th watch of the year!

William Friedkin’s Cruising is an extremely interesting film in a variety of ways. I think the first five minutes of this film are perfect. It builds an atmosphere and sets up a story that immerses you in the film immediately. It kind of feels like Twin Peaks at times, with the music and overall vibe. While it does fall off a bit as the film progresses, it hauls you right back in towards the standoff at the end.

It has a very original premise with unique and risky filmmaking. Friedkin always keeps it ambiguous—sometimes so much so that it almost tips over into frustrating—both with the ending, which is heavily left open for interpretation, and with how the film is structured. It’s confusing at times when we see Al Pacino’s character infiltrating the gay culture(?), but I think that works perfectly and puts us, the viewers, in his shoes, as he is also very confused by a society he has no knowledge of.

Cruising was a very controversial film at the time of both its release and making. It was troubled by protests during filming, forcing a lot of the dialogue to be dubbed in post, but it was also nominated for a handful of Razzie awards. In my eyes, this is ridiculous because it’s a great film. Not flawless, but great.

It’s not only a film about a serial killer. It’s a film challenging sexuality and the gay experience at the time. It’s a film about police misconduct. It’s a film about a lot of things, but now I’ve written too much, and my brain is empty😂

Very underrated film. I recommend it!

I find it so fascinating to watch Trump go from an almost likable, aspiring business dude to turning into what we know him as today. Not only does the film portray this extremely well, but the way Sebastian Stan increasingly exaggerates Trump’s characteristics as both the film and the character progress is phenomenal, and it’s not done in a way where it seems like a parody, which is great. Jeremy Strong is also fantastic as Roy Cohn—100% deserving Oscar nominations for both performances.

I really like the style of filmmaking, but honestly, I would like to see a prime Martin Scorsese fucking slaughter (in a good way) this film, because I know he would.

Still, it’s really great film as it is! Definetly underrated.

Sinister is a good film with some semi-original ideas, but it also includes a lot of cliché elements that take me out of it. I don’t really love these kinds of horror films because they’re all so similar and far too reliant on sound and jump scares. I feel that they also often use paranormal/unexplainable events as an excuse for lazy writing.

This film stands out, thanks in large part to an excellent performance from Ethan Hawke and, as mentioned, some original ideas and solid overall filmmaking. Without those strengths, it could easily have been a much weaker film—but tbh, I enjoyed it:)

I’m going to try to watch more horror films, as it’s a big blind spot for me.

Definitely Toby’s most interesting camera work yet. If we’re speaking technically, I think there needs to be some work on blending the shots together better, making the scenes actually feel like real time. It’s not necessarily the continuity that needs work, but, for example, sometimes it switches from a very wide focal length straight to a long lens, which makes for an abrupt and out-of-place cut. This can be used effectively to evoke certain feelings, but I don’t think that’s the case here. If anything, it would at least need to be done more deliberately.

In the same ballpark is balancing the color in the different shots within the same scene. Sometimes the white balance in-camera seems different between shots, and it ends up looking unprofessional and cheap.

The technical aspects obviously get better with practice, but that’s what I had to say about it for now—obviously meant as constructive criticism, like everything else I write here.

As for the story itself, I didn’t really understand what it was about or what I was supposed to take from it beyond the basic premise of the film. That’s just me, though, and it’s obviously subjective.

Good work, Toby! I can’t wait to see more!

My favorite part was seeing how happy Kinderman was about getting an autograph from Chris😊

Such a great film, which inspired so much after it—both for better and worse. I love how it actually takes its time to build the story and characters—something we don’t often see nowadays because of the general audience’s fried attention spans... I did think it ended a bit abruptly, though. I also thought the way the film introduces characters was a bit weird, because I felt an odd number of the characters I expected to be more significant were either never or barely seen again? Did anyone else feel that way, or is it just me?

Also, I thought the “scene with a lot of noise jump-cut to a silent scene” thing was a bit overused and became jarring—which is strange, because I don’t think I’ve ever felt that way about something like that before💀 Maybe it’s a common trope in William Friedkin’s films, but I haven’t seen any others, so I wouldn’t know.

I thought it was fun that Max von Sydow is in this, because I thought Father Karras’ character was similar to Tomas from Winter Light (1963), which Max von Sydow is also in.

Overall, The Exorcist is a great and iconic film, but it is flawed.

Tainted by the propaganda allegations even before its release, Warfare has been treated unfairly by audiences—many not even giving it a chance to begin with. Even I postponed my viewing until the absolute last chance to watch it in the cinema, but now I’m here to tell you that this is an absolutely phenomenal film.

From the get-go, you are locked the fuck in. You feel like you’re right there with the soldiers. Garland and his team tease the viewers with action, only to drop a (literal) bomb on you at the most unexpected moment. From here on out, it’s hell. Non-stop screaming, bombs, gunshots, and gore. I was told this film was brutal, but I couldn’t even begin to imagine this.

And then it’s just… over. And it was all for nothing.

Warfare doesn’t spend a second trying to justify either side’s actions. Nor does it glorify anything in any way—rather, the complete opposite. That’s part of what makes it great.

The ending, where footage from the real event is shown, was the icing on the cake. It’s tragic that people have to go through such things. The side-by-side comparisons of the actors vs. the real people showed that everyone was perfectly cast. They’re fucking great in this film. I really liked how well just «the boys vibe» was portrayed at the beginning of the film. It felt very realistic. The entire cast had amazing chemistry.

At the moment, I’m very mixed on Alex Garland as a director. I disliked Civil War (2024), and I’m not the biggest fan of Ex Machina (2014) either. I really liked Annihilation (2018), though, and Warfare is definitely my favorite of his films now.

Honestly, this is up there with the best films of 2025 so far. Thank God I watched it in the cinema.

I wanted to rewatch Andrei Rublev today, but since I didn’t feel like staying up until 3am on a work weekend, I decided, for the first time, to watch Andrei Tarkovsky’s first—technically speaking—feature film: The Steamroller and the Violin, which was featured in Andrei Rublev’s Criterion release. I guess that means I’ve kind of been lying by saying I had seen every Tarkovsky film… 😔

The Steamroller and the Violin is a great film. I don’t know what they were feeding film students back in the day, but this is honestly just a regular, industry-standard film. The writing is great, and it’s fascinating seeing how noticeable Tarkovsky’s directing is. Even from such an early point in his career, his blocking is stellar and very reminiscent of what you see in his more experienced work. Having seen quite a bit of short films / very early work from now-legendary filmmakers, I believe that one can really tell when someone just got it, you know?

We need more female directors over-sexualizing men 🙏🙏

Seriously though, this is unlike anything I have ever seen. When people bring up “films where nothing happens,” I usually roll my eyes because their examples often have a lot happening—it’s just a slow-moving film. With Beau Travail, on the other hand, this may be the closest to “a film where nothing happens” I have seen. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of stuff happens, but it’s almost in the background. Almost like the main plot of the film is just a side character. It’s hard to explain.

Such a beautiful, beautiful film. It’s a 90-minute slow burn that tackles so much and so little. Again, it’s like few I have ever seen. So unique. This is definetly one of those that might become a favorite on rewatches.

The ending needle drop, and the ending scene in general, is so fucking legendary. The absolute last thing I expected 😂

Seeing Orson Welles’ name in the opening credits, you start to wonder what’s going on after not seeing him for 1 hour and 15 minutes into the film, but when he shows up, even with the limited screen time he has, he is absolutely astounding as the ambiguous third man. It’s insane how one can be one of the greatest to ever do it in two of the most important roles within film—sometimes at the same time.

The Third Man is an amazing mystery thriller that delivers twists and turns while also being one of the best-shot films of its time. The use of harsh lighting and shadows in this film was groundbreaking and is used perfectly alongside the black & white cinematography.

I will say that I did not like the score in the film whatsoever. It did not match the tone otherwise created, and the goofy, comedy-like tunes really just took me out of it. I also think the pacing dragged a bit during the last half hour, and the chase sequence was stretched to the point where it almost irritated me… I did like the ending, though.

Loved this film. Emotional and important. Only thing is you knew 5 minutes in who was going to die… that’s not really a con for me tho because it builds it up well and it hits you either way, hoping you’re wrong.

Just a bit of a mess, really.

J. J. Abrams kinda brings the sauce back from The Force Awakens, but it’s still not up to par whatsoever. Some things are cool and entertaining, but other stuff are just so stupid, man.

They try to do way too much to the point where it barely feels like Star Wars anymore. The force is all of a sudden a god like power that you can do basically anything with and it just doesn’t work when nothing like it has been done before. This film just chucks so much previously established shit in the bin to make the most grand piece of bs imaginable, thinking that’s what audiences want.

I don’t HATE this, but it’s a very disappointing ending to a trilogy that I honestly like way more than most. I put down the two other half a star tho after some thought😂 still like them!

That concludes my rewatch of every (non spin-off) Star Wars film. Took just about a week or so.

I ❤️ Star Wars

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is definitely a step down from its predecessor, The Force Awakens. It’s directed worse, it looks worse, the CGI is worse - which I praised heavily in The Force Awakens - and more stupid shit happens. Silly stuff happens all the time in Star Wars films, so that’s really not something I mind too much, but that’s mostly when it comes to plot armor, etc. When Rose “saves” Finn from a really great conclusion, on the other hand, for seemingly no reason, it pisses me off.

Also, I thought it was a bit weird at first about what they did with Luke’s character, but I personally won’t go as far as saying they ruined him, because they definitely didn’t. It makes sense that the guy is different - what, 40 years later? I could to a certain extent understand why he made the decision to leave everybody and all that stuff when they finally showed how he failed Ben Solo. I actually really like that part.

Overall, I do still like this film. Not as much as The Force Awakens, mostly because this doesn’t have that same sauce that J.J. Abrams and Daniel Mindel brought to it, but it’s still enjoyable for the most part.

«You got a boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?» Finn is literally me Rey could ahhhhrrrrraaaaahhhhhh

This is sooo good until they start spitting stupid, obvious, exposition dialogue about how Kylo Ren is Han and Leia’s son in your face like you’re a 5 year old (we get it)

But seriously tho, I actually really love this film. I don’t care. This is so fucking saucy man. I have no shame in saying that the pure filmmaking in this film is better than the prequels. It’s beautifully shot, J.J. Abrams does a great job directing and the acting is great. I love the characters, both the old and the new ones. This film would be 10x more loved if 50% of Star Wars fans weren’t racist and the rest of the bunch are misogynistic…

Kylo Ren is so fucking tuff man😫 Adam Driver gives a fucking powerhouse of a performance. I really wish we got to see more of him. Edit: I’m tripping mf is still alive and well in the next films lol

And btw, am I alone in thinking that this film (and maybe the rest of the trilogy, I don’t ) has some of the best cgi literally ever? Everything looks fantastic. I genuinely feel like these films are the peak of what we have ever gotten from cgi. It’s used really well and not in an annoying and unnecessary way like in ROTS…

Also, this is a really brutal film. The opening scene is nuts and Han Solo’s death caused be PTSD from the age of 8. That shit is terrifying bro.

Yes, there are some dumb shit, but that’s not something new for Star Wars, especially for that which is not the originals.

The sequels are probably my earliest memories of going to a movie theater and they feel kinda nostalgic to me, so maybeee there’s a bit of bias there, but I’m kinda biased towards Star Wars in general. It’s fine.

I wrote this without really knowing what this is rated on Letterboxd, but I’m still gonna say: overhated.

The story and characters are genuinely some of the best ever, but George Lucas can’t write dialogue for his life💔💔 I’m not the biggest fan of his directing either. He should’ve done the same thing as he did with The Empire Strikes Back - given the story to other writers and a different director. It also irks me how literally everything is cgi when it doesn’t have to.

Still, I really love this film and the prequels in general, I just wish they could’ve fulfilled their potential to its fullest.

You’ll have a hard time finding a single line of dialogue that isn’t exposition, but fuck it this shit still bangs balls‼️ (??)

Definetly doesn’t have the same feeling as the original trilogy, but honestly, I don’t really care about that, because to me the prequels are basically just as much Star Wars as the originals because I grew up with both on the same line as the other. Hopefully that makes sense lol

I don’t think George Lucas is the best director ever, but he does a really good job at expanding the already established universe.

Also the fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi &  Qui-Gon Jinn vs Darth Maul is so sick. I think the lightsaber fights in the prequels are probably the best out of all the films.

I’m really pissed off because my eyes felt sooo heavy for a good chunk of the film and it made it hard to concentrate on it😫 and I also started this at like 22:00 and now it’s 02:10 and idk how tf that happened??

Return of the Jedi definetly got the highest production value in of scale amongst the original trilogy. The bigger scenes and new locations feel more authentic and the cgi is also way better than the previous two. I also really liked the lightsaber fight. It felt really dynamic and more like a real fight in contrast to the one in The Empire Strikes Back (which I really love don’t get me wrong).

The ending is amazing. I really like Darth Vader’s conclusion.

My only complaint is that I felt the infamous «George Lucas dialogue» more in this one, but I don’t really care that much.

Love it! I think I would rank this a slight tier above A New Hope.

«And these blast points, too accurate for Sandpeople. Only imperial stormtroopers are so precise» yeah, right😂

Since I forgot to watch a Star Wars film on the 4th of may I’ll make it up by rewatching everything for the next couple of days. I’ll at least try lol

All the way up until I was like 14 years old I somehow though that all of the Star Wars films were made in chronological order, and then that’s how I have always watched them… idk how I thought that, but it made me wonder why everyone though the «I’m your father» twist was so crazy because it already had been established😅 it’s embarrassing now.

But anyways, what a great film. It’s silly, but in a good way. Every character is iconic and it just fills me with joy watching these films. Some of the later added cgi shots kind of irk me, because it sometimes feels out of place and fucks with the pacing a bit. Some of them work really well tho and add to the film. I would love to watch the original released versions of the original trilogy sometime, but it’s hard to find so someone hook me up🙏

Holy shit

As someone who has been trough a «bodybuilder» phase, recognizing many of Killian’s idols and struggles (obviously way less extreme) in the film - that part really hit home. The gym community really is one of the most toxic and insecure communities you can be a part of as a teen/young man. The comments on Killian’s videos are no overexaggeration at all. People just say shit like that like it’s normal. That’s one of the reasons I have distanced myself from it for the past 1-2 years.

But the thing is, this is merely a film about bodybuilding. The bodybuilding is utilized more as a shell for other deeper themes and problems. One could say Magazine Dreams is nothing more than a repackaged Taxi Driver, and one would be correct to a certain extent, but I feel this rather uses Taxi Driver as an inspiration to create something fresh.

The filmmaking is fantastic and the cinematography is heavily stylized, which I absolutely adored.

I do not want to defend Jonathan Majors’ controversies whatsoever, but no matter where you stand in the case, you cannot deny that he is absolutely phenomenal as Killian Maddox in this film. He absolutely transforms, not only mentally, but physically aswell. Unlike leads in other films about bodybuilders, Majors could actually somewhat for a real one with his physice in this! It’s not Mr. Olympia, no, but the flaws at hand are discussed in the film which makes it seem either more self aware or they just somehow planned his physice to look like that? Idk I’m just yapping. My goal is not to criticize Majors’ physice I just thought it was a nice detail😅

Now, I think it’s stupid to boycott/review bomb this film for the sole fact that Jonathan Majors is starring in it. Fuck him, but he is not the only one who worked on it! Let’s not neglect all of the other amazing talent just because of one asshole.

The film has already gone kinda viral on the gym side of tik tok, and I’m afraid people will misinterpret its message, saying «this is literally me» instead of «I will make sure this isn’t me» as young guys often do…

Shoot me, but this is my favorite film from 2025 so far. I loved it.

This review may contain spoilers.

As someone who didn’t love Ex Machina as much as many do, Civil War left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth regarding Alex Garland, but I actually really loved this! I already got spoiled that Annihilation had something to do with doppelgängers or whatever, which was kinda annoying, but it still didn’t ruin my experience too much.

This film really had me locked in from the second they stepped into The Shimmer, and it kept me locked in for basically the entire rest of the runtime. It also creeped me out a lot. My only couple of takeaways that kinda took me out of it were:
1. The flashbacks/dreams(?) of Lena cheating on her husband. At first I thought it was some kind of fever dream or something, but then it showed up again and it just made me confused because I didn’t get what the point of it was?
2. I though how they did the climax where the alien(?) was trying to mirror Lena was kinda cringe in lack of a better word. It felt weird and out of place in my opinion. I wish they did that better.

The acting was great, especially from Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac of course. I also liked the cinematography a lot and the music bangeeeed. Genuinely one of the reasons I saw this was for the climax soundtrack lol

It can’t only be me who thought this was very reminiscent of Stalker?? «The Zone» is «The Shimmer». All of the main characters have problems which attracts them to the zone rather than facing them in the real world. It poses a lot of existential questions. The main character returns to their family’s member who is a bit peculiar let’s say… Obviously Stalker is miles ahead of Annihilation, but I can definetly see inspiration.

Overall really liked this! As mentioned I have a few problems with it, which I feel are problems I find in other Garland films, but still. This is great. I have to watch Warfare soon! Hopefully it’s better than Civil War lol
