Matt Singer’s review published on Letterboxd:
The only problem with this movie is that parts of it are almost too good. The Burj Khalifa is still the series’ literal and figurative high point — but it’s not even the final action sequence in this movie. And Ethan’s team in Ghost Protocol might be the best crew of all the movies, but their chemistry highlights how bland this movie’s villain is, and how overmatched he seems, despite his supposed genius and nuclear weapons.
About the Burj Khalifa: It’s not just that Tom Cruise hangs from the outside of the world’s tallest building. Tom Cruise does a lotta wacky shit in every one of these movies. It’s that Brad Bird et al. keep making the mission more impossible; every few minutes there’s a new problem that must be solved. First, Ethan needs to get to the server room by climbing the exterior of the building; then one of his gloves that allows him to stick to the wall goes on the fritz, so now he’s essentially climbing the world’s tallest building with one hand. Then when he gets to the server the other sticky glove dies, which means he has to figure out a different way to get down. Oh, and while Ethan Hunt was free solo climbing the Burj Khalifa? The woman the IMF must intercept showed up early for her appointment.
It’s like a hat on a hat on a hat. But, y’know, awesome. In my opinion, there aren’t nearly enough films about the U.S. government invoking ghost protocol.
