By no means does a movie being set in the contemporary world make it a better movie, or if it's historical or science-fiction or fantasy is it docked for not being in the year 2005 if the movie is released in 2005. But... If there were a person who wanted to understand the year 2005's media through finding contemporary movies set in contemporary times, and went to the top 150-200 movies on letterboxd, you'd find this list:

The last time I saw The Hateful 8 was at the 70mm roadshow that toured the country. I leaving that showing impressed by the presentation but let down by the substance of the film.

Fast forward nearly ten years later I finally revisited this movie, and while I can say it's still not my favorite Tarantino, but it definitely is a lot a better than what I ed. Easily this is the most gorgeous looking Tarantino film, and I…

Billy had balls for jumping… I’ll give him that… But still a non redeeming character.

Crazy to me that was straight to DVD in 2001. While it still holds up better than the more modern entries. 🤙

had to revisit this after hearing so many stories from Greg Sestero himself during his Q&A last night - I'd do anything to hop in a time machine and be a fly on the wall on that set, but this will do!

all that nasty gore and the thing that almost made me puke was the old lady eating spaghetti

it's one of the most beautiful and good looking gore movies i've seen EVER, could compare this level of stunning visuals with the manson family - very gorgeous shots for an indie horror and the lighting is just superb, full of pinks and violets everywhere - plus only one hour 17 minutes runtime

Before pressing play, I reread my 2021 log. I was confused that I wrote about it being funny in the first half. Then I pressed play and immediately they fucked up the heist and I was giggling so much.

Now this is the exact texture of boring and inept that I crave! Watching this late at night as I was perilously perched between dream and wakefulness was a perfect salve for my sleepy mind. All the characters sort of began to blend together as I found myself closing my eyes for just a second, then a second longer, but it's almost as if the characters themselves are caught in a hypnagogic lull: it's genuinely hard to imagine how chill…

Whoa. Absolutely captivating animation. One of those occasions when I would love a dub so I didn't have to look down at subtitles. The fluidity of the characters and the creativity of the environment was lovely. Who wouldn't fall in love with Alma?

It made me feel like I was watching parts of Solaris (the book) - things that felt like I could never visualize.

some parts dragged and felt slow, but the ending hit hard. it’s quiet and sad but it was pretty good. excited to check out more of his films.

I love this film. It's a fantastic sequel that doubles down on everything that made the first one so good without just rehashing what we've seen before. There were a few jokes that landed better for me this time around than ever before, and on the flipside there were a few shots that looked as bad as ever. (Just a couple of shots on Ego's planet in the scenes where Peter and Ego toss the ball around and in the…

The Wiz

1978

Okay so maybe one of my toxic traits is not really caring about The Wizard of Oz and I’ve learned to live with it. Yet watching The Wiz, it…didn’t sway that opinion but found a lot of enjoyable parts.

Mostly that the production and set design and use of New York is gorgeous? The munchkin place was a decaying pavilion from the 1964 World’s Fair? The Cyclone at Coney Island? The World Trade Center as Emerald City?! The use of large…
