That defibrillator scene alone is 5 star worthy.

oh wow ok !
The first act of this I wasn’t really sure what to make of it. I was a little bored and I didn’t really get what it was going for. Once the perspective changes and we start to see the same events from the other perspective I was hooked! It was such an interesting and fun way to tell this story. By the time you get to the third act and you see the full scope of…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A film that wouldn't give me the common decency of hating the characters. (Except that abusive dad...).
And I Freaking loved it for that!
My heart was sent on a roller coaster of a ride with all the different character perspectives as not one was a fully reliable narrator!
fav of the year thus far :,( the third act broke me
Absolutely breathtaking. Kore-eda is a master at work. I wasn’t sure where this was going for the first third, it was shaping itself up to be a suspenseful thriller but it’s so much more aching and poignant. Unflinchingly yet gently deals with shame, loss, loneliness, and love. Hauntingly beautiful score by the late Sakamoto. The film keeps revisiting the concept of rebirth over and over, possibly it’s a rebirth through self-discovery in actuality.

A masterclass in storytelling. Absolutely beautiful.
I had expected this to be very different in plot and tone, and am delighted that I knew so little going in. So many layers before getting to the true core of the film.
The cast are all great but little Yori was absolutely outstanding, and so tiny!

Film 2: Monster
This one here is really really good. It feels like everyone I watched it with left with a different perspective on it.
Lose concentration and you’ll lose the story. Each act told from a different perspective of the same events really worked well here. I’ll be honest I’d like rewatch this again soon it it gets a wide release because my perspective on the ending was vastly different to others. Anyway I’ll stop rambling and just say, excellent direction performances and score.
An intertwining story from different perspectives is usually something I live for. Once I discovered the type of film this was, I became very excited. There just wasn’t enough personal stakes to care enough for the film. Monster is thematically nuanced, but it wasn’t interesting enough for me to care. It’s gorgeously shot with fantastic sound design, but the on-screen action didn’t interest me. If you want me to love your movie, raise the stakes.
