I feel like everyone in this film is... moving... in... slow... motion.
A couple of problems, besides the predictability:
1. The first scene in the diner is clearly a Sunday, but later in the film we see a sign on the front of the diner that says it's closed on Sundays.
2. Why introduce that poor woman who's about to lose everything because she can't pay the bills, and then never return to her and help her out? That was…
Introduced by Nora Twomey from Cartoon Saloon. Breathtaking live accompaniment by Conor Linehan.
Genuinely one of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen on the big screen. Absolutely marvelous and doubly elevated by Conor Linehan's magical piano playing throughout the whole film. I hadn't even heard of this film before the DIFF programme dropped, I largely booked it to kill time between the other screenings I was going to the same day. So happy I took the time for it though.
Can't completely side with Achmed on this one as he did kidnap Peri Banu but I guess she kinda fucked with him? Idk man
Getting to see this in a cinema for the first time was an absolute dream - and not only that, selected as part of DIFF by Oscar-nominated animator Nora Twomey (who talked about the film’s influence on The Breadwinner) with beautiful live piano score performed by Conor Linehan.
I’ve had a longstanding love for Lotte Reiniger, her beautiful work, and her foundational impact on animation without managing to watch anything outside of Thumbalina to date - and this was the first…
This is a beautiful but painfully sad documentary about a team of wonderful high school girls who dream of changing their country for the better. What I like about this film is that it takes a childlike viewpoint of the events it covers. This isn't an in-depth exploration of the ideology behind the political sides in Afghanistan (or, for the matter, in the US). What matters is simply whether or not individual people and groups make decisions that are helpful…
If the fire had engulfed him, I wouldn’t have had a problem. I’m not condoning it, all I’m saying I wouldn’t have a problem with it
I've been meaning to submerge myself in Albert Serra's work for an age and lo - DIFF miraculously announced they'd have him in attendance.
Serra took to the floor to introduce the film, sunglasses firmly in place, contextualising his interest in making this film in saying that what was important to him was documentary as a way to gain privileged access to something that has never been seen or heard before - that people really behave in a mysterious way…
DIFF 2025 - FILM 6
Wow man. These guys are evil. Everyone who participates and revels in this has a unique disregard for life that I found very unsettling.
Very well directed documentary nonetheless.
I started DIFF with the Wisdom of Happiness. Agent of Happiness is the symmetrical close of the festival for me. A 4 day weekend that I will cherish forever. I hope to be back here again. Happiness 10/10.
