Watched this on a flight which was literally the perfect setting to really fall into the plot and the feels of it all. Usually ”minimal” scripts (especially with time jumps) are somewhat of a turn off for me….but the simplicity of the scenes are really what made this movie exceptional for me. Moments with just eye made just as much impact as any. Awkward video calls. Nora trying to subconsciously plant a New York trip into discussion. Like all so subtle but overall made this such a understated beauty

The Uber scene……girl I’m choked up just thinking about it??? Her husband being there with a no questions asked hug??

Overall loved Past Lives and this is my new “root for” movie for award season.

Side note- Nora’s husband overthinking the hell out of her dreams/sleep talking and everything could’ve warranted her being like “WOWWW YOU THINK ID CHEAT ON YOU???” or some dumbass overacted argument script work….but the fact they just let his insecurity linger there while they laid in bed. Bitch they tore this script a new one😭😭😭

I don’t even know where to begin. Nostalgia for me is something I’ve had a complicated relationship with my whole life. Looking backwards is either blurry memories, or moments that I have completely fictionalized to a place in which I feel comfortable holding onto them. I’d like to think that as queer people, our superpower is seeing the world for what it could be…escaping the brutal nature of reality in which we know it.

Relationships- whether that be family, friends, situationships, or a missed opportunity along the way- come with their own nostalgia. Creating a 30 second snapshot of our lives intertwined…we have a vault in our head full of every person we know and can revisit them at any moment. No matter how suppressed those memories are.

I had an ex tell me something that changed me forever. Off and on again, I couldn’t imagine anyone else seeing me the way he did. I couldn’t let go because of that.

You miss the moment you trusted yourself to meet someone new. It’s not even about me.”

We didn’t work. But I was nostalgic for a time where I imagined it could work with someone like him. Seeing myself as lovable, open, a risk taker, and someone worthy of a partnership I’m proud of. Someone to show me the love I needed…without me even having to ask.

Adam, played by Andrew Scott, finds himself stuck between past and an uncertain future. When given the chance to play in the “known” of the past- he chooses that over moving forward. When he finally is ready- he is too late. And that message haunts the entire piece when rewatching. Echoing the past can only get you so far, familiarity and comfort can sometimes prevent you from the risk that changes everything in your life for the better.

Adam and I both find ourselves time and time again wondering how we can rewrite and change the moments behind us. In chasing closure from the past, we forget how much importance lies in our present selves. The person here, today, breathing, holds the answer to what the next 5/10/15 years look like. But that will not come if I don’t believe my future to just as valuable. Both selves, past and future, are watching us today. Who do we give ourselves to?

First and foremost…..that dog would NOT be invited to the wedding after fucking up that cake LET ALONE carrying the rings??? I don’t trust his furry ass!!!

Sydney for me will always deliver two things: iconic crying scenes & incredible fashion. This film had both. I love how she seemed to let herself be a little more in her comedy shoes this film- and in the moments where she got to be vulnerable and connected she excels. The scene on the floating island in the harbor?? She was LOCKED IN. She looked stunning. She’s much more than that….but I’m crazy if I don’t say it. THE BLUE DRESS??? I about fell in the aisle of the theater. I want to commend her bravery and strength….when her ex showed up and was about as sexy as Glen Powell?? If I were her I would’ve left that rehearsal dinner, ubered home, and showed Australia what a REAL threesome is. But that is ME!

Glen Powell plays a lovable and very realistic “rom com man”….was definitely expecting more of a Halmark portrayal from him. Instead we got a mature and lovable performance of material from the book of Riverdale & 13 Reasons Why character tropes. Man fuckboy….man clueless…man looks good without shirt. But in my opinion, Glen Powell took us beyond a script that was clearly working AGAINST his acting abilities.

The script……….what were we doing? The dialogue in the banter bits felt like an imaginary argument I have in the shower. Sydney was in this man’s face talking about “Poopy butt!!”….baby let that f word fly!! When she finally did though….(the cake scene)….it was a huge payoff. That whole wedding was trashed for a minute. I believed it. America believed it.

Overall….I enjoyed my night. Would I love to see these two paired up again? Surprisingly…yes. But next time- with a script that isn’t a WattPad reject from my One Direction phase.
