Following several years and several films demarcating a decided shift into increasingly complex, metafictional/modernist sub-stories leaning further and further into strangled emotional repression and muted, devastating tragedy, there's a reversion here to an almost disarming directness, both in narrative and emotional through-line, even despite the addendum that this is easily his most formally and politically complex work thus far (each successive movie the 'every movie is the same' crowd appears more and more ridiculous - you can really feel the change in cinematographer in this one, and there's a new breadth and maturity to his visual language contained here that supersedes even that of The French Dispatch or Asteroid City, even if the film's broader heights fall short of its predecessors), but considering Anderson is a filmmaker whose greatest moments have come when earnestness is finally able to break through the drywall of his characters' own dogged desire for easy compartmentalisation, The Phoenician Scheme, while easy to write off as overly simplistic, only codifies the man's glorious middle-period (the continued high-ocean-line of his career thus far, consistently productive of some of his greatest, most intelligent work) as the modern herald to Peter Greenaway's work, autistically fine-tuned and imbued with a giddy mathematic complexity, but unlike Greenaway's through-and-through dryness and disconnect underscored with an obfuscated sunlike core of empathy and grace and love and longing, especially here at what might serve as a conclusion to what has shaped up to be a death's-inevitability triptych of Dispatch-City-Scheme, in which the time and perspective shifts ever-further into the present from the future; Dispatch as an act of eulogising and remembrance, Asteroid City the short-term coping with the realisation that random, awful things can strike from the blue, even to you (For we all have the subconscious belief that "anything that moved like that/or knew/my name/could never die/in the common verity of dying"*, even if we claim not to), and The Phoenician Scheme, in which a man not-yet-dead seeks to shore up his legacy after a lifetime of cruelty and distance by doing a single good thing with his life, maybe even two - looking both backwards and forwards, the vanishing-point of death as the point of apocryphisation, the impetus for myth and history and the end of reality to be replaced by fiction, markets, religion rushing into the space where a once-living person stood, breathed, lived, like water into a punctured hull, or any other whatever-have-you that in our current postmodern hell seeks to shape the 'real'. In other words, this is Wes Anderson's Ikiru, and a major work, disguised as a minor one. Or maybe just the one I needed right now. Yeah.

Kind of an exhausting mess, enveloping and superseding the entire qualityspectrums of what constinatutes "good-ness", "bad-ness" et cetera, kind of a gorgeous, weirdly melancholic and vastly overstuffed victory lap, a lurching, monstrous, oftentimes misshapen cornucopia of ambition and ideas and the final stage of this franchise's long journey from spycraft thrillers to American Shonen. For me, at least, the most surprising facet is how much of it just fucking works for me, considering how messy and shambolic and shaggy this so often is. At its best - the submarine and plane setpieces, the moments of shared dramatic swell through cross-cut, trans-locational sequences, any of Tramell Tillman or Esai Morales' scenes - it's predictably excellent, as thrilling as the highest moments of any prior entries, leavin me giddy as a lil kid on candlemas or some such, had me sat bolt upright in my seat in spite of my ever-perpetual sleeplessness and insomniac albatrosses. At its worst, less predictable issues: the first hour is nearly as bad as the hearsay, an ouroboric, auto-fellating cycle of self-reference and self-reverence, an exhausted collapse during the victory lap - not unbearable, necessarily, but certainly a grim stone tied round this movie's leg, a concrete shoe felt even in the glorious latter-hours. Much of the film's overstuffedness reeks of a movie hastily recut, re-shot, pared down from something longer and potentially more coherent, or else a frankenstinian fusion of numerous old drafts into a single, incoherent Chimera. The highs are high, the moments are there, I am still taken away by the same immense positives that have defined this series, but there are large parts that feel the feeling of a strange misfire, earnest and ambitious though it is.

History will recall that I was most-likely too leadenheaded and groggy to fully appreciate/consciously experience this one at this moment, but on the other hand it may be said that such a state of dazed confusion is ideal for something of this calibre; an hour-long, surrealist murder-thriller recalling The Seashell and the Clergyman and harbinging Carnival of Souls while occupying a hellish platitude besides either - I may not have fully understood the images as they flashed by me but flash by me they did, leaving imprints on my memory of striking compositions and pioneering, frightening images. A spate of about four or five particular moments will especially linger, I feel. The sort of thing I’ll recall years from now or unconsciously channel into something I produce, a high marker.

I’m perfectly willing to it when something just isn’t tailored towards me, and The People’s Joker is definitely one for the ‘I respect this more than I actually enjoy it’ pile, though I still enjoyed it a fair bit - while the distinctly ‘Nostalgia Critic’ sense of humour and general aesthetic is very much Not My Thing at all, there’s a host of dazzlingly creative visual ideas or dizzyingly affecting and bold emotional beats. In addition I’m a sucker for a Negativland needledrop and for any implication at all that Batman and Robin is the best Batman movie (it is and always has been), so that’s that too. If nothing else, worthy of iration purely for its commitment to itself, and as a genuinely creative feat of low-budget filmmaking - full of puppetry, animation in a half-dozen different styles and Speed Racer-esque CG backdrops. An interesting, illuminating and hopeful film - hopeful in text and metatext, in the hope it gives me for the allowance of this kind of thing to organically develop and grow in the future.

Certainly features some of the more impressive cow-based stunts I've seen in a movie

Exceptionally dry adaptation of one of the most jaded, jaggedly abstracted novels i've read short of Burroughs - takes a minute to get onto its ostensibly amateurish, flat wavelength (finding itself occasionally struck through with inspired collages of newsreel footage, educational films and original scenes), but as it lumbers along the distant characters, incoherent narrative (though practically straightforward compared to the book) and shocking unstaged footage of surgeries, burn victims and massacres take on Ballard's grim philosophy, finding an effective audiovisual counterpart to his deconstructed psych-trip of identities stripped, divided and reinterpreted amidst the steel-sharp flurry of modernity's transactions and gazes. Will probably take another watch for me to really figure out my full opinion on this, but there's a fascinating quasi-faithful/anti-faithful quality to this as an adaptation that I still can't fully name the effect of.

Snapped me right out of an ever-worsening brain-fog that's been assailing me the past-some two weeks or so, a dome around my head in which nothing existed except me and it, and for three hours my head was clear, and in the hours that have elapsed since I have found this clarity (or, rather, absence of obfuscation - similar, though differentiable) remaining. A friar's lantern amidst the Obscure.

Manages to explicate particular little things about how I perceive and experience the world - sound, light, heat, order, syntax, plexus - in a manner I haven't really been able to, and appreciate the ability to see someone - not verbalise, because this doesn't contain any spoken words, but - but you know what I mean.

Generally very good in a low-key way, bifurcated in the centre by a single breathtaking moment. Worth a rumination.

Simple, evasive, frightening as hell. An ingenious little structuralist gambit, reminiscent of Lindsey Vickers' films, by way of Benning or summin. Extremely cool, exactly the kind of thing I wish i'd been able to think of.

Very glad I enjoyed this, having so doggedly prepared myself not to. Slightly by-the-numbers Mainstream Queer Tearjerker (Queerjerker? No, that’s terrible, nevermind), extremely low-key and restrained in ways that both elevate and hinder it, finding its greatest strengths as it moves towards its end. Mescal and Connor are both very good. Definitely gonna strike a lot of people harder than it did me (god knows it did in the screening I inhabited).

Furthermore, very interesting that the French audiences I’ve encountered at this festival seem to unilaterally view homosexuality in and of itself as something comic, considering especially that Frenchness is its own form of sexual deviancy, one undeserving of reclamation or celebration and one which I would punish via death were I someday the world’s king.

On nature’s propensity for rebirth, on the potential for the flowers to cover over everything even when the earth is scorched. The kind of optimism I think I need in times like this, dark ages hopefully signalling the next impending Yuga cycle. People often call movies ‘balletic’ for their employment of movement, but there is something in the synthesis of sound and vision that achieves the structure and rhythm of ballet (of course, Kubrick did the whole ‘space and nature as cosmick dance’ in 2001, but there is a breadth and modernity to this take, the music crafting a suite-tapestry of disparate styles, from soft arpeggiator-led electronic music to vast orchestras to Harry Partch pastiches all mirroring and reconstructing the image before our eyes. A pleasant surprise. A pleasant experience.

Heartstopping and heartbreaking, elliptical and blunt, a major fucking achievement and one of the best, most surprising films I’ve caught in a long, long while. Easy to resort to the apparent critic-line of ‘horror-inflected AIDS melodrama’ but the actuality is so, so much more. Mashes together disparate ideas suited for a dozen separate movies into an epic torturous, confusing and wild in equal parts, liquidly shifting from character to character and idea to idea without a care for anything besides its own bizarre, dreamish emotional-logiclines. Could point to nearly any facet as a highlight, but something in Tahar Rahim’s face and body moves me like something phantastic moving through me. Not what you’re gonna expect, but upon accepting its wavelength, it becomes instead something far, far greater. A magnum opus, by any measure of the word.

There is a case to be made for the argument that August 6th, 1945 was the most important day in human history since the first industrial revolution. There is a case to be made for longer.

75,000 years ago a supervolcano in present-day Lake Toba erupted, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, and in the years since many have theorised that this event caused an 'evolutionary bottleneck' - our population reduced to but a few thousand, stunting our growth as a species in ways that we still feel today, a kneecapping we will never fully recover from, robbing us of the potential to actualise a now-everdistant future.

Following the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, the entire world was plunged into darkness for, by some s, years. Following the Great Bomb, the Bomb to end them all, we were plunged into a new dark age we will never see the end of. There is no God, there is no faith, there is no poetry, there is no longer progress. There is only an immense, motionless pause.

This might be all that's left. There might never be anything else. Not since that day, decades and decades ago.

Received a thudding, apocalyptic feeling akin to the oncoming of cardiac arrest about 42 seconds before the movie started as I realised that I was about to willingly subject myself to French Comedy. Despite these… reservations, enjoyed myself. Well-placed comic-death. Spoilers. Funny, on occasion. Spoilers.

Based on its title and the reputation of its director for genre-mashing, violently squelchy thrillers such as Bacurau, Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent feels content freely swinging between that mode and several others, lurching along its massive runtime as both thriller and anti-thriller, slow and digressive and punctuated with leaps and peers into the distant past and distant present, each successive era unable to reach or even know that which came before or after. By the end reaches an elegiac, existential note, drawing all its prior threads together and cutting them evenly, in a clean, simple and devastating motion. In equal parts anticlimactic and thrilling, a hauntological twist on the 'existentialist-postmodern spy-film' canon (Alphaville, The Foreigner, Limits of Control, Revolver etc.). Really great shit, can't wait to see it again.

Solid in its attempts at expanding the narratively- and thematically-distant original game, imbuing it with a complex structure, character arcs and some additional thrills not found in the game - but the thing is, the original Exit 8 is by its very nature a repetitive, contextless game made enjoyable by the interactivity that comes with it being a video game, and the attempts to flesh it out into something that functions effectively as a ive viewing experience, though irable, ultimately fundamentally knock heads with the fact that this concept, when applied to film works predominantly well as something either far shorter or far more abstract - see P.T., Backrooms, Skinamarink etc. Still a good time, though, especially on a massive fuck-off screen.
