Enrique’s review published on Letterboxd:
In this 3rd installment of the Karate Kid franchise, we see John Kreese from the first film plotting revenge on Daniel with his friend from the army, Terry Silver. This Terry guy is pretty over the top at some points in the movie, and really has the fun feel of a classic movie villain.
While this revenge story is going on, we see how much Daniel wants to give back to Mr. Miyagi by helping him open a bonsai tree shop and working with him. He even meets a new girl and builds a friendship with her. He planned on having a good time helping his friend and mentor.
Despite us seeing how much Daniel respects and cares for Mr. Miyagi in the beginning of the film, there are several points in the film where Daniel does things that Mr. Miyagi would not approve of. Especially when it comes to John Kreese and Terry Silver. Although at times they went extreme and forced Daniel into things, he does fall for their scheme sometimes. Since we see Daniel go through lessons in the first film, it is a bit frustrating to see him go against the mentor we've seen do such good for him. Initially seeing this could be upsetting, but thankfully they show that Daniel isn't perfect and can learn from his mistakes.
So while I don't think this film is as strong as the first, I still think it's a fun watch. We get to see a bit more of the two main characters we've followed while also meeting some new and interesting people. The franchise overall is a pretty good time.
