Pandemonium

1987

★★★

Incomprehensible. Undefinable. Absurd and charming. Offensive and endearing.

Pandemonium features everything from the fifth Reich existing on Bondi Beach, to a group of dancing koalas, to zombies, to incest, to Azaria Chamberlain being crucified, all the while including a demonic baby doll, a giant penis that gives Tromeo and Juliet a run for its money, and Gary Foley.

That's barely even scratching the surface of what has been called 'the least boring film ever made in Australia', and yeah, that's a fairly apt title.

Pandemonium plays like someone read the scripts for Round the Twist while they were on acid and decided to make a film about it. It's just... unhinged. Which makes sense given Esben Storm's role with the series.

I'm not sure if this is the result of Keenan, Storm, and co, utilising 10BA to just... do what they wanted for money... but if it is, then good on them for getting some bucks while they could.

If not, then far out.

There has never been, and will likely never be, another film like Pandemonium in Australian film, and that's both a good thing and a bad thing.

Three stars feels like the only apt rating I can give this.
