Has all the makings of a classic 80s buddy cop movie, but it sadly didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. A fun time anyway!

What a total stinker of a finale to an otherwise pretty decent series of Doctor Who. I wanted to write up a whole piece about this but I just haven’t got the energy. There’s loads of bits on my twitter that sum it up quite nicely but here’s a few bullet points:

- the two rani’s did nothing of any worth and just stood there spouting exposition. 
- this “reboot” of the show was meant to be a fresh jumping on point for new fans and both series have ended with focus on obscure villains from the classic show. It’s no wonder Disney don’t seem to be interested anymore. 
- Omega was dispatched of way too easily and I don’t like how they killed off Archie Panjabi’s Rani.
- Ruby thinks Conrad’s world was nice? What the fuck?
- Russell makes Shirley say “you don’t look disabled What the fuck??? 
- The return of Susan seems to have been cut in favour of the reshot ending which is a real shame.
- Ruby is treated like shit by everyone when she’s asking about Poppy. Surely they should be more concerned?? 
- Anita was the one good thing about Joy to the World so it was nice to see her back but it’s a pity she was just a human doorstop. 
- the Rani should’ve just been in league with the Daleks and it could’ve been a simple story and Ncuti would’ve actually fought them. Oh well. 
- “sometimes I think we’re all your children.”

There’s more thoughts but I can’t be arsed. 

If Doctor Who wants to succeed in the future then they need to commit to Billie Piper as the Doctor 100% and give her a full series. Not one special, not even three. She can’t be a gimmick Doctor, especially when we went through this whole nostalgia bait only a few years ago with Tennant. Sadly, I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I can’t see Piper doing it and I think the show is just kind of creatively bankrupt right now. I’m certain that no thought has been put into it beyond “Look at this, you this? Look at this lovely content. You liked this! Please renew us!” 

I’m pro Billie Piper as the Doctor, don’t get me wrong, I think she’s fab but they have to do it properly!

Lovely to see Jodie Whittaker though. She’s fab! Sorry to see Ncuti Gatwa leave so soon, but he deserved better than the material he was given and I can’t wait to see him succeed with stronger material elsewhere! 

The regeneration at least looked pretty and the music was good.

I guess I’ll just echo what I thought before, especially that stunning and loud throwback score. Too long and probably a whole lot more dumb than it presents itself as, but I still dig it.

One of my absolute teenage comfort movies, so it was a bit daunting showing it to Lauren for the first time but she seemed to enjoy it!! Phew!

Bring the baby 

I can’t lie, I was a little distracted tweeting about the TARDIS-like set design at the beginning of this that I think I missed some vital plot information, and coupled with the fact I watched this in two halves I didn’t quite know what was going on… nevertheless, I had such a good time with this! Those car chases were insanely good!!

Very few films continue to hit hard emotionally and make me teary after multiple viewings but boy does this rip my heart out every time!

A pretty by the numbers and decent romantic drama that aims for something deeper but misses. The abusive aspects of the central relationship honestly feel kind of crowbarred in at the end and I feel like they ought to have been seeded earlier in order for the emotional payoff to have any real impact.

The Final Reckoning is an overwhelming, bloated and messy film that spends the majority of it’s first act trying to catch viewers up with Dead Reckoning and making often tenuous, and in some cases fan fiction quality levels of connections to the previous films in the series, through a never ending montage of flashbacks, exposition and weird fan service that adds very little. It even goes as far as to pretty much completely retread the ending of Fallout, a film that uses the history of the franchise much more meaningfully for emotional payoff. 

With all that said, I absolutely fucking loved this. I know, make it make sense. But it did hit me emotionally and I was awestruck at the sheer spectacle of it all. It’s a surprisingly sombre affair and with an ever looming sense of finality, it felt like it could go in any direction and I was stressed and panicked for the fate of every character. 

The death defying stunts are sensational, and despite feeling very familiar to the helicopter chase in Fallout, the bi-plane sequence is exhilarating! But my favourite set piece was easily the stunning and literally breathtaking underwater sequence. I’m not really a fan of underwater scenes in general but this was sublime! 

It’s a real mess but I loved it!

We’re way overdue a Les Grossman movie

An absolutely terrible ending to an otherwise engaging and uneasy paranoia thriller.

I enjoyed this very much despite feeling its runtime quite strongly in the third act, thanks to its captivating and committed central performances. Succeeds where many prequels don’t in that I still felt the story had stakes as it’s set so far before the first film where there could still be consequences for any actions, but also that I’m genuinely invested in Snow’s rise to power.

I’ll it that I don’t really understand the rules of confession, but surely one would bend the rules in the case of murder and by staying silent does that not make him an accessory? Anyway, this was fine if a little unremarkable.

One week until I see The Final Reckoning!! I’m so excited. Again, this was another background watch but I’m still logging it. No director’s commentary this time because I’ve not bought this on Blu-Ray, only digitally, because I didn’t want a copy that says Part One on the cover. I’m weird, okay.

Like with Rogue Nation yesterday, this was more background viewing than actual watching as I built a wardrobe. Decided to play this with the Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie commentary. I’ve heard the stories before in the extensive Empire Podcasts, but it’s great to hear Cruise talk at length in this and his reactions to scenes are the same as mine!

Full disclosure, this is less of a rewatch and more of a half watch because I have this playing while clearing out some clothes and tomorrow I will watch the next two while building a new wardrobe. I’ve seen these films enough that I don’t think background viewing really matters and I don’t feel guilty about logging it.

The guy at the titty twister club listing off all the types of pussy reminded me of Bubba listing the ways to prepare shrimp in Forrest Gump.

“You paid for an hour and there’s still like 45 minutes left.”

Not my first choice for the Best Picture Oscar, but a worthy winner. My original thoughts still stand. It’s overwhelming in the best way, and barely lets up or pauses for breath until the very end, at which point it tears off its screwball mask and rips your heart out. 

Double bill idea: Uncut Gems 

Given it’s a category that has been defined retrospectively, there’s naturally some debate about what the first true film noir is. This seems to generally be regarded as one of the earliest examples, at least of the classic Hollywood noir period of the 1940s and 50s and the Hays Code era (I need to now check out the 1931 The Maltese Falcon as I’m keen to see the differences). 

Its twisty plot, shadowy cinematography and slippery characters - cynical, unsavoury men and enigmatic women - are all typical of the genre, right down to an iconic final line. These elements are a clear influence on some of my favourites of the genre and this immediately stands alongside them. I thought this was excellent, thanks most of all to Humphrey Bogart’s fantastic central performance!

Unbelievably dull for the first hour but it definitely picked up in the second half. This could’ve and should’ve been a third hour of Mockingjay Part One and not a separate film.

If the first was bordering on bad then this is probably just bad… but I can’t say I didn’t lap it up!

“The senator’s penis is not in the case!”

Hits even harder than it did back when it aired. Perhaps unsubtle and melodramatic in places and maybe even naive in its resolution, but surprisingly and scarily prescient too. I can understand some of the negative points on here, but I think it’s excellent television. Extended Black Mirror.

Pretty dumb, bordering on bad and overly long but pretty enjoyable anyway.

It’s pretty visually groundbreaking as one has come to expect from a James Cameron picture, almost to the point I thought this was a much more recent film than 1989 and I think its atmosphere is its strongest asset. That said, I kinda struggled with this one throughout and I didn’t even watch the near 3 hour cut! It’s obviously very well made but there’s just too many ideas at play and honestly, underwater action has never really done it for me so I struggled to care.

About as good as sequels get and I loved the subversion on the first. It’s bigger and bolder, and to many it’s better, but like with Alien and Aliens, I think I have a slight preference towards the first film, but ultimately I had an amazing time with both in equal measures.

Some of the effects are laughable by standards that followed but it adds to its charm rather than detracts from what is a really enjoyable, tight sci fi thriller that teeters on the edge of horror in places.

Like with Total Recall, there’s a superb use of practical effects. This is a solid satire that plays a little bit soap opera sometimes, mainly with the teen drama stuff, and it’s like a very expensive b-movie, but it’s still highly enjoyable and wouldn’t work nearly as well in the hands of a lesser director. I loved the intermittent little clips that played throughout, they were a fun way of offering exposition. Double bill with Mickey 17?

Utterly ridiculous and the film knows it. It doesn’t exactly play it straight but it doesn’t lean too heavily into the preposterousness either. It balances it so well and it’s so much fun, I loved it! Those practical effects though! Incredible! Quality action, some good laughs, brilliant!

Sweet enough and I loved the way it was shot but it didn’t really go anywhere. One of those shorts that could and should be expanded.

The western isn’t my favourite genre but there are plenty of examples of either classic westerns or those that subvert the genre that I prefer to this, but I still enjoyed Tombstone very much. It just didn’t strike me in the way it has others. Stacked cast though and Val Kilmer steals it!

This is definitely my favourite of the series so far, and I’m glad it’s not just another battle royale type situation as that would’ve been too repetitive. A little bit Star Wars in its rebels vs “empire” situation, though a little more grounded and personal, as much as that’s possible for a series like this. 

Could’ve done with more menacing Donald Sutherland, I hope he gets some more to do in Part Two.

Insufferable.

“The whole thing didn’t turn out as planned and Wade hated sour cream, as you can probably tell from that shot.”

I was scrolling through Mubi and saw a 12 minute short film directed by Peter Strickland so figured “why not?” and watched without reading the description… probably should have, and I hope the neighbours weren’t prying through my window. Nice enough story and quite handsomely shot.

“I am what God made me.”

I’ve genuinely been itching to rewatch this for the last week so I don’t mean to be disrespectful by watching it today, but it seemed like a good opportunity anyway. 

I love the way this builds to a predictable conclusion but then in the end offers something even more interesting. I feel the revelation regarding Benitez could’ve been seeded a little more, but I ire the decision. Here’s to diversity, inclusion and open hearts.

An okay episode of Black Mirror but one of the more forgettable entries. And for what is supposedly meant to be one of the “more funny episodes”, I laughed once.

I would imagine this was pretty groundbreaking for 1971 and it’s hard to deny this is a competent character drama that’s remarkable for just how unremarkable it is, but it didn’t really hold my attention.

This didn’t quite charm me in the same way it did on first viewing but it’s hard not to enjoy this. Light and breezy. Gavin’s (Peter Capaldi) lane discipline on the motorway is infuriating!

Sinners is perhaps the film that best fits that saying: “they don’t make them like this anymore.” A film that knows exactly what it wants and achieves it to perfection with no compromises. Off the back of reinvigorating Rocky alongside Michael B. Jordan with Creed and offering up two of the best entries in the MCU, Ryan Coogler is a director at the top of his game right now and truly comes out swinging, literally guns blazing and teeth bared. 

It’s mighty impressive how perfectly this transcends genres, moving between western, blaxploitation and invasion horror to name just a few. This manages to balance a rich and romantic character drama that tackles racism, highlights not only the power of music but of creative and spiritual expression, while at the same time being a really fucking awesome, pulpy and bloody vampire flick! Blade seems to be a no-go at Marvel right now, and this might have killed it stone dead, but once Coogler is done with Black Panther 3, I wouldn’t mind seeing him tackle that, but also I don’t want him to get trapped in that machine when his original work is this good! 

I had an absolute blast with this and aside from The Lost Boys, this could be the best vampire film I’ve seen! It’s exciting, interesting and above all else completely unique. It absolutely kicks ass! 

Michael B. Jordan is phenomenal in his dual roles and Ludwig Göransson’s score is typically astonishing. There’s a sequence in here, and you’ll know it when you see it, that I think could be one of the defining scenes of this decade. I wish I could’ve seen this in the IMAX because it looks and sounds phenomenal - dearest Warner Bros., I’m gonna need a 4K disc with expanding aspect ratios and I’m gonna play it LOUD! 

A total triumph and an instant classic.

“There’s a lot of dignity in that, ain’t there. Going out like a raspberry ripple.” 

Absolutely killer soundtrack, I’m certain Murray Gold stole it for I Am The Doctor. Bob Hoskins has the best introduction in this with that cracking main theme, and he’s absolutely mesmerising. This is a brilliantly sharp and brutal film but it ultimately hinges on Hoskins’ performance for it to work and for those heart sinking final moments to hit hard. And boy does it work! 

Something of a Shakespearean tragedy masquerading as a British gangster flick.

Really enjoyed the first half of this, perhaps more so than the last movie. I kind of lost interest once it got to the arena despite a really fucking smooth transition into the larger aspect ratio which pleased me greatly, but I’m glad it didn’t copy the first beat for beat and at least changed up the dynamic. Nice ending which I didn’t see coming!

I had no attachment to this as a child so this is my only second viewing, which may as well be my first. My mate had the idea of watching this ahead of Doctor Who: Lux, an episode where a cartoon escapes the screen into reality. Not quite the same as this of course, but I liked the idea of watching a live action/animation hybrid before hand. 

This should not work but it’s an astounding achievement. Not just from a technical standpoint, the animation is practically seamless, but it excels as a pastiche of detective and noir films, because it’s a genuinely good story and Bob Hoskins is excellent at playing it straight against the absurdity. 

Surprisingly naughty, I doubt they’d get away with it these days!

I do really enjoy a late-night, or perhaps even after hours run around movie and this was no exception. This neon lit thriller is taut, propulsive and pretty damn stressful and bleak.  

Tangerine Dream 👌

One of the most uncomfortable and scary horror films I’ve ever seen. Potentially enough to put you off having kids. I liked this but I never want to watch it again. The score is super effective too!

Pretty crap. Viola Davis is much better than this. This and Zero Day would’ve been more fun in a Kamala Harris presidency. It’s unlikely to be the case considering how late she became the candidate, but things like this feel like they weren’t anticipating that Trump win.

Takes itself more seriously than something like Battle Royale and I became a little tired of the quick cutting pretty early on, but I had a very good time with it. Quite predictable throughout and a little hindered by its 12 rating, but still really enjoyable!

Bis ans Ende der Welt 

2000th Film Logged

Wim Wenders’ Until the End of the World is a sprawling odyssey, more of an experience really than a typical film, that not only spans the globe, but multiple genres. This certainly isn’t for everyone, it’s something of a fever dream honestly but it almost seamlessly pivots from crime thriller, to road movie, to a love triangle romance, to weird science fiction, so maybe there is a little here for everyone. Whether or not it all works together is hard to say…

There’s a vibe and style to this that I can’t quite pin point. At the time I suppose it was futuristic and watching it now, elements are kind of prescient, but still distinctly 1990s and almost otherworldly in just how familiar yet ever so slightly “off” it is. 

I’d be lying if I said this completely held my attention for the entire 5 hours but I greatly enjoyed it. I hope that one day I’ll get the opportunity to see this in a cinema and fall in love with it.

It’s a bit baggy but it fucking rocks! I think I stand by my initial review, even down the treatment of Ilsa which I’m still a little iffy on but not totally against anymore after McQuarrie’s justification.

This didn’t quite strike me in the same way it did when I first watched it five years ago, in fact I found it a little uneven this time (it’s entirely possible I’m just overly tired and not concentrating hard enough at the moment) but this is still a really good, interesting and original science fiction picture, which I’m always happy to see!
