This remains one of the most essential and emotionally resonant portraits of political activism ever captured on film. Sensitive, celebratory, and righteously angry, an all too relevant call to organise, build solidarity, and stand tall in the face of bigotry and oppression.

One of our favourite crime films of the 1970s, capturing New York at its grimiest and most lived in.

The New York Times said that The Taking of Pelham One Two Three astutely captured the modern vibe of New York in its most tumultuous decade, "Throughout there's a skillful balance between the vulnerability of New Yorkers and the drastic, provocative sense of comedy that thrives all over our sidewalks. Six years ago, Panos Cosmatos' trippy blood-soaked revenge caper, MANDY, took the cinema industry by surprise. Not many knew what to expect from the film, and even fewer knew it would spark a career resurgence for the star of the film, Nicolas Cage. Since then, Cage has had many brilliant roles and successes, but nothing has taken hold of us quite like twisted 2018 psychedelic horror.

There was so much to love about MANDY, from the 1980s heavy metal pastiche to the gooey practical effects and gore. Add in the trippy visuals, the almost Charles Manson-like music of Jeremiah Sands, the synth-heavy score by the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, the demonic bikers, and the Cheddar Goblin – it's a one of a kind viewing experience!

If you somehow missed Panos Cosmatos' MANDY in its original run, don't sleep on this mind-melting, genre-blending delight. Catch it showing in our HorrOctober strand tonight at 20:35 & the 9th, 12th, 22nd & 30th October.

It's finally here! Don't miss the new Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe horror/thriller LONGLEGS as it is playing daily at The Prince Charles Cinema! Catch the best horror thriller film of the year at the London Home of the Nicolas Cage Freak-Out©!>/b>

Nick Cage heads and horror fans alike have been buzzing all weekend about LONGLEGS! Screenings have been incredibly busy, with some selling out, as hundreds of people flocked to see this creepy new film.

Directed by Osgood Perkins (son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins), LONGLEGS stars It Follows' Maika Monroe as a gifted new FBI Agent Lee Harker, who is assigned to a unit tracking down an elusive serial killer known as Longlegs (Nicolas Cage). As the investigation becomes more complicated with occult evidence uncovered, Harker realizes a personal link to the killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder. ing in on the hunt is the great ing cast of Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, Dakota Daulby and Kiernan Shipka.

Believe the hype! Cage is utterly demented in the film, and delivers an intense performance as this creepy killer Longlegs. The real star of the show is Maika Monroe, who keeps you hooked with a gripping portrayal of an FBI agent at her wits end trying to solve the case. If you are into true crime or procedural thrillers like Zodiac or The Silence of the Lambs, with a healthy dose of early 90s Satanic Panic, we think you will absolutely love this one! It's certainly one of Nicolas Cage's best and more interesting roles since Mandy.

Don't miss Maika Monroe on the hunt for Nicolas Cage in LONGLEGS at The Prince Charles Cinema daily. GET TICKETS HERE!

BLEAK WEEK 51152 CINEMA OF DESPAIR - 15th to 21st June 2025 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/list/bleak-week-cinema-of-despair-15th-to-21st/ letterboxd-list-63267324 Fri, 9 May 2025 01:51:55 +1200 <![CDATA[

In case you missed the news, we’ve partnered with American Cinematheque to bring BLEAK WEEK: CINEMA OF DESPAIR to London from 15th - 21st June, and our first wave of shows are now on sale to PCC ! This most dismal week of cinema opens with WATERSHIP DOWN, introduced by Andrew Haigh, will feature both BLEAK MOMENTS and NAKED with Mike Leigh Live in Person for Q&As, and will close with THE DEVIL, introduced by Robert Eggers!

The American Cinematheque’s BLEAK WEEK: CINEMA OF DESPAIR comes to The Prince Charles Cinema for its 4th Annual week-long celebration of films that “fearlessly plunge the depths of human despair.” This year’s festival will expand beyond Los Angeles to seven cities, with American Cinematheque partnering with 10 venues across the United States and internationally to London – where it will transpire at The PCC.

Our first wave of shows were announced yesterday, and promises Introductions from the likes of Robert Eggers, Andrew Haigh, Prano Bailey-Bond, and Q&As with the legendary British director Mike Leigh! Keep in mind, this is just the first wave. You won’t believe what we still have in store for you – it’s hard to imagine so much excitement is emanating from such cinematic desolation.

The London leg of the festival opens with the traumatising 1978 British animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN, featuring an Introduction from Andrew Haigh (Director of All of Us Strangers).

Our week of particularly bleak films will largely focus on British cinema, which will include Mike Leigh’s BLEAK MOMENTS and NAKED – both featuring a Q&A with the legendary Director in person! Other British highlights of the festival will include 10 RILLINGTON PLACE with Introduction from Prano Bailey-Bond (Director of Censor), Danny Boyle’s TRAINSPOTTING, Mike Hodges’ GET CARTER, Charlotte Wells’ AFTERSUN, Clio Barnard’s THE SELFISH GIANT, Jimmy T. Murakami’s animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, and the British apocalyptic horror THREADS.

The line-up will also feature some films from further afield, including William Friedkin’s SORCERER, Elem Klimov’s COME AND SEE, John McNaughton’s HENRY : PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, Sam Peckinpah’s STRAW DOGS, Alfonso Cuarón’s CHILDREN OF MEN, Louise Weard’s epic transsexual odyssey and cult hit CASTRATION MOVIE i. TRAPS, and Toshiyuki Mizutani’ ISOLA: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY GIRL, Robert Altman’s IMAGES, and F.W. Murnau’s THE LAST LAUGH featuring Live Score by Hugo Max.

Finally, we will close the gloomy week of cinema with a special performance of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1972 Polish horror THE DEVIL, featuring an Introduction from Robert Eggers (Director of The WitchThe Lighthouse and Nosferatu).

Tickets for BLEAK WEEK are now on sale to PCC and their guests for 48hrs. Public booking opens Friday 9th May 1PM. Scroll down to explore all the awaits in our first wave of announcements. Our second wave is coming very soon, and will see even more bleak cinema and exciting guests! GET YOUR TICKETS HERE!

After Bruce Lee's untimely death in 1973, a curious phenomenon arose. Lee's final film, Enter the Dragon, was about to be released to international adoration. With his "cool blend of rakish charm and unparalleled martial arts skill", nobody had seen anything like Lee before.

And Hong Kong filmmakers weren't ready to let go of the star's legacy.

A subgenre was born: "Brucesploitation". Actors began impersonating the Kung Fu Hollywood legend, under stage names like Bruce Li Bruce Le, and Dragon Lee. With films like ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH (1978), ENTER THREE DRAGONS (1978), CHALLENGE OF THE TIGER (1980), and the aptly named THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE (1980) - the subgenre became its own cult movement.

At The PCC, we will be showing four of these wild films this August and September 2024.

The time is upon us - the season FROM THE MIND OF DAVID LYNCH is celebrating our favourite enigma. This eagle scout, abstract expressionist, and transcendental meditator has a body of work that would fascinate the most stringent cynic.

On his foray into filmmaking during his years as an art student, Lynch tells a typically dreamlike story. "I was in this cubicle at night, painting a garden at night. Mostly black, with some leaves, green coming out. And I was sitting looking at this painting. And from the painting I heard a wind. And then I saw the green start to move. And I said, oh. A moving painting."

In the decades following that epiphany, Lynch has been recognised as one of the most important directors of our time - always keeping us guessing what he'll do next.

Everything Lynch touches turns to wild, cinematic magic. Through his body of work, he takes us into his singular brain and down into the underworld.

Following THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, we’re proud to continue spotlighting powerful, groundbreaking queer cinema throughout our programme with a curated strand titled LGBTQIA+ STORIES.

This section brings together a dynamic mix of essential classics, cult favourites, and boundary-pushing new work that speaks to the richness and diversity of queer experience on screen.

From the unhinged genius of John Waters’ MULTIPLE MANIACS to the poetic heartbreak of Wong Kar Wai’s HAPPY TOGETHER, this strand spans decades and styles. Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning MOONLIGHT returns to devastate and uplift in equal measure, while FOX AND HIS FRIENDS showcases Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s insight into class and desire. BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER brings colour and camp with its satirical take on conversion therapy, and Sean Baker’s TANGERINE remains a landmark in trans representation and guerrilla filmmaking. Brand-new additions like I SAW THE TV GLOW and the deeply radical CASTRATION MOVIE ANTHOLOGY 1: TRAPS continue pushing the conversation forward. Whether you're revisiting favourites or discovering something new, these are LGBTQI+ movies that matter.

Catch them all at the PCC over the next few months!

AN ALL 413i40 TIME GREAT DOCUMENTARY! https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/an-all-time-great-documentary/ letterboxd-story-38617 Sat, 31 May 2025 05:51:19 +1200 <![CDATA[

For Pride Month, on Tue 3rd June - Funeral Parade Queer Film Society is proud to present The Times of Harvey Milk, Rob Epstein’s powerful portrait of a pioneering gay politician and a tireless advocate for LGBTQ rights.

Released six years after Harvey Milk’s assassination, this documentary charts Milk’s path from the honorary “mayor” of San Francisco’s predominantly gay Castro District to his historic election as a city supervisor in 1977. During his eleven months in office, Milk successfully lobbied for bans on discrimination in housing and employment, making him an icon of the gay rights movement. The film also documents Milk’s untimely death, the aftermath of his murder, and the miscarriage of justice that was the trial of Dan White, Milk’s killer.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1985, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK remains one of the most essential and emotionally resonant portraits of political activism ever captured on film. Narrated with warmth and quiet strength by Harvey Fierstein, the film weaves together archival footage, personal testimonials, and news broadcasts to tell a story that is both deeply personal and profoundly political. It’s a vital record of a pivotal moment in American history - not just in the LGBTQ rights movement, but in the broader struggle for justice and representation. Decades later, its message of courage, community, and resistance still speaks loudly and clearly. THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK is sensitive, celebratory, and righteously angry, an all too relevant call to organise, build solidarity, and stand tall in the face of bigotry and oppression.

Get your tickets below for 1984’s Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature - THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, presented with an introduction from Sarah Cleary of FUNERAL PARADE QUEER FILM SOCIETY in a special screening on Tuesday 3rd June. TICKETS HERE!

Stanley Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON returns in 4K! t722x https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/stanley-kubricks-barry-lyndon-returns-in/ letterboxd-story-38405 Wed, 28 May 2025 04:01:02 +1200 <![CDATA[

To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, Stanley Kubrick’s BARRY LYNDON, starring Ryan O’Neal, returns to our screens in 4K this July! See this beautiful painting-like epic like you’ve never seen it, as it is presented from a new 4K restoration that was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative.

After an absence of nearly half a year, one of our most popular films of the last few years – Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 historical epic BARRY LYNDON is returning to The Prince Charles Cinema from a brand-new 4K restoration!

Stanley Kubrick redefined the historical drama with Barry Lyndon, transforming the genre into a coldly dazzling meditation on class, ambition, and human folly. Adapted from the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, the film follows the rise and fall of Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), a charming opportunist whose cunning carries him from a modest Irish upbringing to the battlefields of the Seven Years’ War and into the gilded salons of European aristocracy. Told in picaresque detail, Barry’s journey is both a grand adventure and a cynical exploration of how fortune and status are won—and inevitably lost.

Kubrick’s most visually sumptuous film, Barry Lyndon is renowned for its painstaking craftsmanship, from its opulent costume and production design to its use of natural light and candlelit interiors. Working with cinematographer John Alcott, Kubrick employed pioneering techniques to recreate the luminous textures of 18th-century painting, resulting in a film that is as formally exquisite as it is emotionally unflinching. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction, and stands today as a masterpiece: a gorgeously rendered, ruthlessly ironic portrait of a world whose elegance masks a deep moral emptiness.

About the Restoration:
Barry Lyndon is presented in the film’s photographed aspect ratio of 1.66:1, as specified in a December 8, 1975, letter from director Stanley Kubrick to projectionists. This new 4K restoration was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The high-definition transfer, created in 2000 under the supervision of Leon Vitali (Kubrick’s personal assistant), served as a colour reference for this restoration. The 5.1 surround audio mix was created from restored original soundtrack stems.

Colour Grading: Sheri Eisenberg at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging Digital image restoration: Prasad Corporation, Burbank Audio restoration: Chris Jenkins at WB Post Production Services Sound

Don’t miss the return of BARRY LYNDON, as it screens from a stunning 4K restoration in celebration of its 50th Anniversary on 18th, 20th, 22nd and 24th July. GET TICKETS HERE!

There are many perks to being a member at The Prince Charles Cinema. One of our favourites is our regular £1 SCREENINGS. That's right! We regularly show films that cost our only £1! How can you beat that offer?

So if you already have a hip, browse on below at our eclectic offerings. If not? What are you waiting for? Purchase your bargain hip now and lap up all our £1 screenings coming up!

We kick off with a rare 35mm screening of the chaotic and wildly inventive animated-live action hybrid OSMOSIS JONES, where the internal workings of the human body become a battleground for one very grumpy white blood cell voiced by Chris Rock. Then it’s pure charm and con artistry with THE STING, also screening on 35mm, pairing Paul Newman and Robert Redford in a classic caper full of twists, jazzy flair and impeccable suits. For something heavier, as our official BLEAK WEEK £1 feature - SHAME dives deep into emotional isolation with raw, haunting modern drama from Steve McQueen.

Looking for something lighter? We’ve got you covered. Coming-of-age hits like BOOKSMART and THE SANDLOT are coming up, while the offbeat cult favourite BETTER OFF DEAD delivers surreal teen angst. Tickets are now sale to for our 35mm screening of THE PROPOSITION on Tuesday 17th June, featuring a Live in-person Post-Film Q&A from Director John Hillcoat and stars Ray Winstone and Emily Watson!

We’re incredibly excited to be hosting a very special screening of THE PROPOSITION with a post-film Q&A from the cast and director - as part of our BLEAK WEEK programme! Directed by John Hillcoat and written by Nick Cave, this brutal and poetic Australian western is set in the sun-scorched outback of the 1880s. It tells the story of a captured outlaw offered a horrific deal: to kill his older brother in exchange for the freedom of his younger sibling. Unfolding with operatic intensity and moral complexity, the film is a haunting meditation on violence, justice, and colonialism, just as stark and unrelenting as the landscape it inhabits.

Released in 2005 to critical acclaim, THE PROPOSITION quickly established itself as one of the great modern westerns. With stunning cinematography by Benoît Delhomme and a brooding, atmospheric score by Cave and Warren Ellis, the film is both visually arresting and emotionally devastating. Performances from Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, and Emily Watson bring a raw humanity to the bleakness. The film’s unflinching tone and moral ambiguity make it a perfect fit for BLEAK WEEK, and we’re honoured to welcome John Hillcoat, along with British screen legends Ray Winstone and Emily Watson, for a live in-person Q&A. This is a rare and unforgettable opportunity to revisit a truly uncompromising piece of cinema with the people who brought it to life.

WATERSHIP DOWN with Andrew Haigh Intro 🐇 6b6h2c https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/watership-down-with-andrew-haigh-intro/ letterboxd-story-38103 Thu, 22 May 2025 00:10:40 +1200 <![CDATA[

Relive the hauntingly beautiful British animated classic, WATERSHIP DOWN, as it serves as the Opening Film for Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair on Sunday 15th June. On the day, we will be ed by Andrew Haigh for an Introduction.

Step into the hauntingly poetic world of WATERSHIP DOWN, Martin Rosen’s groundbreaking 1978 animated adaptation of Richard Adams' beloved novel, as it opens our leg of the Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair strand, in collaboration with American Cinematheque. This special screening will not be one to miss, as it features an exclusive introduction by acclaimed British filmmaker Andrew Haigh, director of Weekend45 Years and, most recently, All of Us Strangers.

Watership Down is no ordinary animated film. Based on Richard Adams’ celebrated novel, the film follows a group of rabbits who flee the impending destruction of their warren in search of a new home. Led by the visionary Hazel (voiced by John Hurt) and the troubled seer Fiver (Richard Briers), their journey across the English countryside is filled with danger, discovery, and unexpected allies. Along the way, they face natural predators, human encroachment, and the terrifying totalitarian rule of the Efrafa warren, forcing them to confront what it truly means to live free. More than a simple tale of survival, the film explores community, courage in the face of brutality, and it continues to move and challenge audiences decades after its release.

Whether you are revisiting this film that perhaps traumatised you in childhood, or witnessing if for the first time, WATERSHIP DOWN is not one to miss on the big screen. It’s the perfect film to kick off our Bleak Week programming, and made even better with Andrew Haigh Live Introduction. See the animated classic on Sunday 15th June. CLICK HERE to book today...

David Cronenberg's THE SHROUDS comes to Bleak Week for its London Premiere! 4v5561 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/david-cronenbergs-the-shrouds-comes-to-bleak/ letterboxd-story-38042 Wed, 21 May 2025 00:00:00 +1200 <![CDATA[

Just when we though BLEAK WEEK: CINEMA OF DESPAIR couldn’t get any bleaker, we’ve gone and secured ourselves the London Premiere of David Cronenberg’s latest feature THE SHROUDS on Monday 16th June!

Tickets are now on sale to PCC for 24hrs!

We’re excited to announce, we’ll be welcoming David Cronenberg’s latest film, THE SHROUDS, to our programme during Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair. Cronenberg’s macabre love story, starring Vincent Cassel (La Haine) and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) will see its London Premiere during the bleakest of festivals with a special preview screening on Monday 16th June.

The story, set in an eerie placid near-future, follows a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel), who has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy.

The film was written following the death of the Cronenberg’s wife, and is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars, data theft, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit, THE SHROUDSis a sly and thought-provoking consideration of the corporeal and the digital, the mortal and the infinite.

Don’t miss the London Premiere of David Cronenberg’s THE SHROUDS on Monday 16th June, during Bleak Week. Tickets are now on sale to PCC for 24hrs. Open to public on Wednesday 21st May 13:00. Get your tickets HERE

28 DAYS LATER – 2nd Show Added! Plus 6h5g2h 28 WEEKS LATER! https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/28-days-later-2nd-show-added-plus-28-weeks/ letterboxd-story-37815 Fri, 16 May 2025 00:10:17 +1200 <![CDATA[

Ahead of the release of 28 Years Later – Don’t miss Danny Boyle’s seminal horror classic 28 DAYS LATER screening for ONE NIGHT ONLY on 21st May! To meet demand, a second show has been added earlier in the evening!

Plus, don’t miss Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2004 sequel 28 WEEKS LATER ing our Friday Night Frights strand on Friday 13th June!

Few films have helped shaped a genre quite like Danny Boyle’s 2002 zombie horror classic 28 DAYS LATER. Sure, you could (quite literally) say that George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead walked so that Boyle’s 28 Days Later could run, but Boyle’s film helped revitalise the zombie movie, attracting a new generation of fans and filmmakers to the genre.

The film would popularise the term “rage zombies” – a type of zombie or, in the case of 28 Days Later, infected human, who are driven by a virus that causes a permanent state of rage, leading them to attack anything and anyone without fear or hesitation. These infected people were also quite different from the slow, sluggish Romero zombie; they were physically strong, extremely fast, and incredibly durable. This new type of zombie was groundbreaking, and would influence the likes of Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake, the Spanish found-footage horror [REC], and the Brad Pitt-starring apocalyptic horror World War Z.

Opening with a now-iconic sequence of a deserted London in broad daylight, the film follows a young man (a breakout Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world has collapsed after a viral outbreak has turned much of the population into rage-fuelled shells of their former selves. Shot on Mini DV for a raw, documentary-like edge, 28 DAYS LATER merged lo-fi aesthetics with bleak intensity, and set the tone for the next two decades of apocalyptic cinema.

The film was bold, bleak, political, and tense, and featured one of the best genre trailers of its era, built around Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s haunting “East Hastings.” The film launched a wave of imitators, made Cillian Murphy a star, and put screenwriter Alex Garland on the map. With the much-anticipated sequel, 28 YEARS LATER, on the horizon and directed once again by Danny Boyle, there has never been a better time to revisit this landmark film. Come see where the end began.

Don’t miss 28 DAYS LATER showing for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Wednesday 21st May! The film has been missing from streaming platforms for a while now and hasn’t screened at The PCC since 2019. Book today to see it on the biggest screen we have…

While we have you… We are also screening Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2004 sequel 28 WEEKS LATER, starring Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne and Jeremy Renner, on Friday 13th June. Set after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later depicts the efforts of United States-led NATO forces to establish a safe zone in London, the consequence of two young siblings breaking protocol to find a photograph of their mother, and the resulting reintroduction of the Rage Virus into the safe zone.

TYRANNOSAUR w/ Paddy Considine Live! s3s2v https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/tyrannosaur-w-paddy-considine-live/ letterboxd-story-37785 Thu, 15 May 2025 11:03:35 +1200 <![CDATA[

Bleak Week just got bleaker! On Wednesday 18th June, writer and director Paddy Considine s us LIVE ON STAGE with his 2011 directorial debut, TYRANNOSAUR, featuring an Intro and Post-Film Q&A!

In 2007, actor Paddy Considine decided to move behind the camera when he wrote and directed his first short film Dog Altogether. Partially based on Considine’s late father, the short film starred Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman. Dog Altogether won the 2007 BAFTA award for Best Short Film, as well as a Silver Lion for Best Short Film at the 2007 Venice Film Festival.

Following the success, Considine would expand the story for his directorial feature debut, TYRANNOSAUR. Set against a bleak urban backdrop in an unspecified town in the North of England, TYRANNOSAUR explores themes of redemption, domestic abuse, trauma, and human connection. The story centres on Joseph, a violent and troubled man consumed by rage and grief, who unexpectedly forms a complex relationship with Hannah, a kind and devout Christian woman hiding her own dark secrets.

With raw performances from lead actors Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman, who reprised their roles from the short film, Tyrannosaur is an unapologetically dark and challenging film, that is bolstered by incredible directing and cinematography. Mark Kermode would hail the film as one of the best of 2011, and awarded Olivia Colman Best Actress in his own Annual Kermode Awards. Considine would also pick up a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Don’t miss Paddy Considine LIVE IN PERSON with TYRANNOSAUR, featuring INTRO + Q&A on Wednesday 18th June. Tickets are now on sale to PCC and their guests - Public booking opens Thursday 1PM. BOOK HERE!

A legend of British cinema comes to The Prince Charles Cinema this June! Don’t miss writer & director Mike Leigh live on stage with performances of his films BLEAK MOMENTS & NAKED, as part of Bleak Week on 20th & 21st June.

One of the most important figures in British cinema, Mike Leigh will us live this June for two nights with screenings of BLEAK MOMENTS and NAKED, as part of our Bleak Week collaboration with American Cinematheque. Winner of the Palme d’Or and Best Director at Cannes, three BAFTA Awards, and nominations for seven Academy Awards, Leigh's films demonstrate the power of cinema, blending comedy and tragedy, while honestly and empathetically depicting stories of ordinary working-class individuals.

When we initially reached out to Mike Leigh about participating in Bleak Week, it was the director himself that suggest we show his 1971 directorial debut, BLEAK MOMENTS. Based on Leigh’s own stage play, which presented at the Open Space Theatre in March 1970, the story follows Sylvia (Anne Raitt) through a life of quiet desperation in suburban South London as she attends to her developmentally disabled sister (Sarah Stephenson) and attempts to forge romances with her awkward professorial boyfriend (Eric Allan) as well as a shy, guitar-strumming newsletter duplicator (Mike Bradwell). Uncomfortable silences, botched flirtations, and fleeting hints of warmth and humour punctuate Sylvia’s aching descent into solitude, comionately portrayed by Leigh as symptomatic of humanity’s struggle to communicate and connect. BLEAK MOMENTS will feature a post-film Q&A with Director Mike Leigh on Friday 20th June.

We will follow up Bleak Moments with a screening of one of Leigh’s darkest films, his 1993 black comedy NAKED, starring David Thewlis in a career-making role. The film, which won several awards, including Best Director and Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, follows Thewlis as Johnny, a charming and eloquent but relentlessly vicious and morally ambiguous drifter. Rejecting anyone who might care for him, the volcanic Johnny hurls himself around London on a nocturnal odyssey, colliding with a succession of other desperate and dispossessed people and scorching everyone in his path. With a powerful script and raw performances from Thewlis, Katrin Cartlidge, and Lesley Sharp, Leigh's film presents a blend of black comedy and doomsday prophecy, elevating his career to new heights. NAKED will screen with a post-film Q&A featuring Director Mike Leigh on Saturday 21st June.

Catch a British cinema legend LIVE at The Prince Charles Cinema with two of his most bleak films, as BLEAK MOMENTS and NAKED screen as part of Bleak Week on 20th and 21st June respectively. BOOK HERE NOW!

Into the... HEART OF DARKNESS! 🚁 5p733k https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/into-the-heart-of-darkness/ letterboxd-story-37288 Tue, 6 May 2025 21:00:01 +1200 <![CDATA[

Witness “The Horror...” of Francis Ford Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW: FINAL CUT, the definitive version of one of cinema’s most ambitious and surreal war films, and Elenor Coppola’s infamous “making of” Oscar winning documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS, returning to cinemas from a new 4K restoration! Both screen back-to-back in a “Make Your Own Double Feature” on 5th & 10th July! - TICKETS HERE!

Adapted from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of DarknessAPOCALYPSE NOW transforms a harrowing 19th century journey up the Congo River into a psychedelic descent into the Vietnam War. With Martin Sheen as the tormented Captain Willard and Marlon Brando as the elusive Colonel Kurtz, Coppola’s epic blends madness, myth, and the brutality of war. Alongside unforgettable turns by Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, a young Laurence Fishburne and Harrison Ford, the film explores the darkest reaches of the human soul.

The production of APOCALYPSE NOW is as infamous as the film itself. From Brando arriving overweight and unprepared, to Sheen’s on set heart attack and a typhoon that wiped out the sets, the shoot quickly spiralled into chaos. Coppola mortgaged everything, including his house, to fund the film through his American Zoetrope label. He battled breakdowns, rewrites, and budget overruns, yet emerged with a Palme d’Or winner and one of the most visually and sonically arresting films ever made. The FINAL CUT, released in 2019, features Coppola’s preferred edits and a pristine new 4K restoration from the original negative.

To go deeper into the madness behind the masterpiece, we’re also excited to be screening HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER’S APOCALYPSE, the essential 1991 documentary directed by Coppola’s wife Eleanor, alongside Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper, as it returns to cinemas from a new 4K restoration thanks to the good folks at StudioCanal. Shot during production of Francis’ troubling epic, it offers a raw, intimate look at the obsession, ambition, and near self-destruction that shaped APOCALYPSE NOW into a towering cinematic myth.

Don’t miss this rare chance to experience both the legend and the making of one of the greatest films of all time, as both screen back to back on 5th and 10th July. See one or see both, tickets are sold separately, and are now on sale to everyone…

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and more from 70mm! 1j1h14 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/lawrence-of-arabia-and-more-from-70mm/ letterboxd-story-36901 Fri, 2 May 2025 21:00:00 +1200 <![CDATA[

Ever wondered what movies looked like before the digital age? 70mm is as close to cinematic magic as it gets - bigger, richer, sharper. With the triumphant return of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and many more selections below, there's never been a better time to experience it.

Before digital projection became the norm, cinemas relied on physical film reels, typically available in two formats: 35mm and 70mm. The 35mm format was by far the most prevalent, so if you're over 30 and went to the movies as a child, chances are you watched films shown from 35mm prints! This measurement refers to the width of the film strip itself, which the projector would enlarge onto the screen. Naturally, the larger the film strip, the better the image quality, which is why 70mm was regarded as superior. It offered enhanced detail, richer colours, and overall greater visual fidelity. In the pre-digital era, 70mm was akin to today’s IMAX, reserved for showcasing major blockbusters. Iconic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey were both filmed with 70mm cameras and distributed on 70mm prints.

We are distinguished here at the PCC for being one of the few cinemas in the U.K. that shows films on 70mm, and from our own 70mm projector. It’s an experience like no other, seeing these movies in a clarity and vision unlike anything possible in the digital realm. So with that in mind, from 70mm, we will be screening a new print of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, that showed last year to huge crowds! As well as the classic mainstay in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR as well as two films from our friend Paul Thomas Anderson with PHANTOM THREAD and LICORICE PIZZA!

Seeing a film from 70mm projection is a truly rare experience, exclusive to very few select cinemas in the U.K. So we invite you to in something special and pick and choose from our fantastic 70mm selection in 2025! TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE!

A SUMMER OF HORROR! 6baq https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/a-summer-of-horror/ letterboxd-story-36903 Thu, 1 May 2025 21:00:00 +1200 <![CDATA[

Our FRIDAY NIGHT FRIGHTS season has been a runaway success for the last few months, since it’s inception back in December. We’ve just added a whole load of films to the slate including THE EVIL DEAD TRILOGY, ONE CUT OF THE DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13TH, MANHUNTER & SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. GET TICKETS!

After last Friday's smashing screening of ALTERED STATES, we continue our tribute to Ken Russell’s fearless filmmaking with GOTHIC, a fever‑dream retelling of the Shelley circle’s darkest nocturne, and LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, a wicked plunge into English folklore dripping with erotic menace. Both films showcase Russell at his most audacious, blending beautiful visuals with lavish, operatic excess that vibrates off the screen.

Once we’ve explored Russell’s realms, brace yourselves for way more horror with the EVIL DEAD TRILOGY showing in separate screenings, ingenious meta‑zombie comedy ONE CUT OF THE DEAD, Michael Mann’s stylized criminal mind‑hunt MANHUNTER, the original slasher landmark FRIDAY THE 13TH, and the chilling cat‑and‑mouse of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. We're even throwing in screenings of JENNIFER'S BODY and TETSUO: THE IRON MAN!

It’s a line-up designed to keep you coming to the PCC every Friday, as well as up late and jumping at every shadow, see you there!

TARANTINO at the PCC! 6x2s6r https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/tarantino-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-36900 Tue, 29 Apr 2025 21:00:00 +1200 <![CDATA[

We’re absolutely crime-ridden here at the PCC, and we’re not apologising for it. This email is your guide to the best in criminal cinema. From slick heists to bloody showdowns, we’ve got the criminals you’ll want to get to know! We’ll start you off with a Tarantino triple whammy: PULP FICTION, RESERVOIR DOGS and ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD - back on the big screen, tickets HERE!

Lets start off with something special. That’s right! We're bringing back Quentin Tarantino's Palme d'Or winning crime drama, the revival of the gangster film, the one and only: PULP FICTION. The picture was like nothing anyone had seen before. Exhilarating performances by Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast swept you along to the violent underbelly of Los Angeles. Film critic Anne Thompson saw the film at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994. “I don’t anything but really enthusiastic applause. It was electric. There was a lot of expectation that this would be something remarkable – and it was.” Dont be a square, come spend your Saturday’s with us for PULP FICTION on 35mm.

Then, let’s rewind to where it all began as 1992’s RESERVOIR DOGS is finally back at the PCC. A lean, brutal masterclass in crime cinema. A botched diamond heist. A warehouse full of paranoia. Blood. Betrayal. Matching suits. From its razor-sharp dialogue to its jarring chronology, Tarantino’s debut reinvented the gangster film overnight. With timeless performances from Keitel, Roth, Madsen and Buscemi, its the blueprint for countless imitators, but still untouchable.

Then we roll forward to Tarantino’s last feature, one that may just be his best. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD weaves a sprawling crime saga wrapped in nostalgia, myth and menace. Set at the end of Hollywood’s golden age, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are dynamite as a fading star and his stuntman sidekick, pulled into a twisted tale of cults, crime and celebrity. Screening from a truly glorious 35mm print.

SILENT FILMS with LIVE SCORES! 3b2k16 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/silent-films-with-live-scores-1/ letterboxd-story-36898 Tue, 29 Apr 2025 04:22:44 +1200 <![CDATA[

F.W. Murnau's original vampire classic, NOSFERATU, returns on 8th June with improvised LIVE SCORE from the brilliant Hugo Max! Plus, Hugo Max takes on more Silent Classics, including Benjamin Christensen's HÄXAN on 18th May and 29th June, and F. W. Murnau’s FAUST on 25th May and 23rd June!

After mesmerising audiences over the last couple of years, while providing multiple stunning live scores to F.W. Murnau's 1922 adaptation of Bram Stoker's DraculaNOSFERATU, the multi-talented composer, violinist, violist, and pianist Hugo Max returns for another soul-stirring live score to go along with Murnau's original vampire classic on 8th June!

These performances are part of Hugo Max’s second UK Tour this April – July accompanying a daring triptych of films from F.W. Murnau with live solo viola. Two of these films will screen here at The Prince Charles Cinema. For all the latest updates, be sure to follow @hugo_max_scores_silents on Instagram.

NOSFERATU is known for being the first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and was recently remade into a smash-hit from director and friend of the PCC, Robert Eggers! Shot in an era when cinema was still finding its footing, NOSFERATU was a cinematic marvel that pushed the boundaries of expressionism and storytelling. The film's use of shadows, eerie landscapes, and Max Schreck's Count Orlok created an atmosphere of dread that continues to captivate audiences to this day.

Hugo Max will also return to the Prince Charles Cinema on 18th May and 29th June, with a film that debuted back in January to an ecstatic response. Showing from a new restoration, Hugo will perform an improvised live score during Benjamin Christensen's 1922 silent masterpiece, HÄXAN. A series of eerie vignettes depict images of sorcery and evil on screen, from representations of occultism and religious hypocrisy to a chilling witch hunt in the Middle Ages. Directed by and starring Benjamin Christensen as the Devil, Häxan mixes documentary and fiction forms to create an unsettling brew that prefigures everything from Gothic horror to the found footage film.

Due to the success of our previous Hugo Max Silent Film Live Score performances of both NOSFERATU, HAXAN, THE LODGER & THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, we’ve expanded the repertoire even further and are very excited to announce a screening of another F.W Murnau classic, his 1926 adaptation of FAUST.

Hugo himself has this to say about the screening:
“F. W. Murnau’s 1926 reimagining of the Faustian legend narratively draws upon the dramas of Goethe and Marlowe while blazing with a singular visual power. Epic in scale and breathtakingly fantastical, Faust is propelled by tragic urgency and romance. An ode to the triumphant power of love, this film explores themes that permeate and unite Murnau’s oeuvre. My viola soundtrack combines the expressionistic gestures of central European music from the 1920s with references to the treasure trove of Faust-inspired compositions”

Let this daring silent film masterwork into your life with a beautiful live score accompaniment from Hugo Max on 25th May and 23rd June. GET TICKETS HERE!

a SCOOBY DOOBLE FEATURE! 🌭 1u1e41 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/a-scooby-dooble-feature/ letterboxd-story-35921 Thu, 10 Apr 2025 21:00:03 +1200 <![CDATA[

On Sunday 4th May, don't miss the return of the original SCOOBY-DOOBLE FEATURE : featuring the loveable 2002 live-action adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, SCOOBY-DOO, and its 2004 sequel, SCOOBY DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED, back-to-back from 35mm prints in one night! Accept no imitations!

Over 20 years ago, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and current DCEU boss, James Gunn, wrote two of the greatest films of all-time. Two films that have aged like fine wine and developed a cult status. When released, they were a hit at the box office, but were a bomb with the critics. The characters were likeable, and had great arcs, the humour and references were clever, and the cast was incredible!

If you haven't guessed it yet, we are of course talking about SCOOBY-DOO (2002) and its brilliant sequel, SCOOBY-DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED (2004). The first of these films follows the Mystery Incorporated gang of Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Thelma (Linda Cardellini), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and their talking dog Scooby-Doo, as they reunite after two years, when they are each separately invited to the popular horror-themed tropical resort, Spooky Island. Resort mogul Emile Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) wants them to investigate “brainwashed” tourists, but none of them know the others are invited as well. Hijinks ensue.

Picking up some time after the events of the first film, the sequel sees the gang gets back together and a museum opens in their honour, filled with relics from criminals they’ve apprehended. But when the costumes start disappearing and coming to life — and the media starts twisting the Scooby gang’s words to make them seem like the bad guys — they have to figure out what’s going on. Zoinks!

The secret sauce with the 2000s Scooby-Doo adaptations is they are kids movies on the outside, and raunchy adult comedies underneath the mask. You'd be surprised what you probably missed as a kid – marijuana references, adult humour and innuendo, James Gunn's attempts at making Velma the lesbian icon that she is 20 years before it was officially made canon, and the birth of what would become the powerful Shaggy meme (no one could have predicted that).

We invite you to come revisit these two loveable classics, back-to-back in 35mm in one night, as our SCOOBY-DOOBLE FEATURE returns on Sunday 4th May at 19:20. Grab your tickets, your Scooby-snacks and meet your crime-solving gang at The PCC! TICKETS HERE!

THE PARANOIA TRILOGY 5h2u68 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/the-paranoia-trilogy/ letterboxd-story-35868 Mon, 7 Apr 2025 21:00:01 +1200 <![CDATA[

On April 21st, Bank Holiday Monday, enter a world of 1970s political paranoia with our back-to-back screenings of Alan J. Pakula’s Paranoia Trilogy. Three of the greatest thrillers ever made - ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, THE PARALLAX VIEW, and KLUTE!

We’re very excited to bring back director Alan Pakula’s iconic paranoia trilogy to our big screen. Each picture is a gripping, stylish dive into conspiracy, surveillance, and power. With both THE PARALLAX VIEW & KLUTE screening from 35mm prints, this is the ultimate way to experience one of cinema’s greatest unofficial trilogies - Pakula’s masterful vision of paranoia and intrigue.

We begin at 12:00 PM with ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, a meticulous and riveting dramatization of the Watergate scandal, starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as the journalists who cracked open one of the biggest political conspiracies in history. Then, at 3:00 PM, Warren Beatty leads THE PARALLAX VIEW, an unnerving tale of assassination and mind control, a lesser seen must-view for fans of conspiracy thrillers. Finally, at 5:25 PM, Jane Fonda delivers an Oscar-winning performance in KLUTE, a slow-burn neo-noir about surveillance, obsession, and power, also presented from a rare 35mm print.

Pakula’s unofficial trilogy emerged from the deep political anxiety of the 1970s, an era defined by Watergate, the Vietnam War, and a growing distrust in government institutions. These films tapped into the fears of a generation grappling with corruption, secrecy, and the feeling that powerful forces were pulling the strings behind the scenes. While these films are unmistakably rooted in their time, their themes remain just as relevant today. In an age of misinformation, mass surveillance, and political scandals, the anxieties captured in Pakula’s work feel eerily familiar, reminding us that history has a way of repeating itself…

Whether you us for one film or settle in for the full three, this is a rare chance to immerse yourself in Pakula’s world of tension and mystery. Don’t miss out on one of the most interesting events of our Easter Bank Holiday programme! GET TICKETS HERE!

ERIC ROHMER 2jn5f Morality and Longing... https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/eric-rohmer-morality-and-longing/ letterboxd-story-35704 Fri, 4 Apr 2025 01:00:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

We’ve got another matinée strand featuring the films from another European great – ÉRIC ROHMER! Don’t miss these delicately told stories of longing and morality from Éric Rohmer – a vital staple of French cinema. Highlights include THE MARQUISE OF O, PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS, THE AVIATOR’S WIFE, A GOOD MARRIAGE, PAULINE AT THE BEACH and THE GREEN RAY.

We are thrilled to announce our The Films of ÉRIC ROHMER season is back this Summer with weekday matinée performances featuring ten classics from the director’s career. Often regarded as the least flamboyant member of the French New Wave, Éric Rohmer produced 27 features from 1959 to 2007. A prolific director who came to filmmaking relatively late, Rohmer was in his 30s when he made his first few shorts, 38 when he began making his first feature, 49 when he finally found breakout success and continued to make films well into his 80s. Quite inspiring to those who may feel they haven't quite achieved their dreams yet. Keep reaching!

Éric Rohmer took his privacy seriously. His real name is actually unknown, as Éric Rohmer was a pseudonym inspired by actor and director Erich von Stroheim and pulp novelist Sax Rohmer. He did however tell some reporters he was born Maurice Henri Joseph Schérer, others Jean-Marie Maurice Schérer, in either Tulle or Nancy, , on either 21st March 1920, 1st December 1920 or 4th April 1923.

In our matinée strand this summer, we will focus on the different eras of Rohmer’s career. These ten features will see two from his Literary Adaptations era with THE MARQUISE OF O and PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS, then from his Comedies and Proverbs series the sextet of THE AVIATOR’S WIFE, A GOOD MARRIAGE, PAULINE AT THE BEACHFULL MOON IN PARISTHE GREEN RAY and MY GIRLFRIEND’S BOYFRIEND, and finally, two standalone classics with FOUR ADVENTURES OF REINETTE AND MIRABELLE and THE TREE, THE MAYOR AND THE MEDIATHEQUE.

Éric Rohmer’s legacy endures as one of the most profound and distinct voices in cinema, influencing generations of filmmakers with his quiet yet profound explorations of the human experience. Don’t miss these classic of French Cinema on the big screen this Summer - TICKETS HERE!

From April to June, we'll be diving into the filmography of the late, great filmmaker with a matinée selectrospective season that features eleven classics, including LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH, THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS, ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL, EFFI BRIEST, THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT and FOX AND HIS FRIENDS.

Herzog, Wenders, Schlöndorff… FASSBINDER

Of the directors active during the New German Cinema movement in the 1970s, Rainer Werner Fassbinder was perhaps the most overtly political, engaged, and prolific filmmakers. A self-taught, multi-talented genius, Fassbinder was highly involved in all his projects, from writing, directing, producing, acting, editing and even composing his films; which gave him more freedom to work quickly and see his vision come to life.

Fassbinder was a radical outsider – surrounding himself with a close, trusted group of actors and technicians, doing whatever he wanted, and didn't allow anyone to meddle in his film projects or his lifestyle. His films rejected traditional conventions, and he drew inspiration from Hollywood melodramas. His work and approach was significantly shaped by his queerness, which would see him filter in queer characters and themes throughout his films. Sometimes, and perhaps most radical of all, these characters were just queer, but that had nothing to do with the plot; which was incredibly progressive for the time.

We invite you to a season of matinée performances, where you can chart the progression of Fassbinder's career; as we see some of his early work that mimicked those of his theatre days, with the use of static long shots and sets that look like a stage play. These films include LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATHKATZELMACHER and BEWARE THE HOLY WHORE.

We'll then see some of the legendary films from Fassbinder's beloved melodrama phase, which include his first domestic success, THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS, and his international breakthrough, ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL, queer classics THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANTFOX AND HIS FRIENDS and THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, as well as EFFI BRIESTCHINESE ROULETTE, and THE THIRD GENERATION.

The prolific Fassbinder would away at the young age of 37, following a drug overdose, in 1982. His fast career and life were propped by a reliance on drugs and alcohol. It is a sad fate for such a gifted talent, but we can this great filmmaker over 40 years later, with this weekday matinée selectrospective season. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE!

THE GREATEST FILM TRILOGY? 5h5f63 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/the-greatest-film-trilogy/ letterboxd-story-35488 Wed, 2 Apr 2025 02:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

Don't miss Krzysztof Kieślowski's THREE COLOURS TRILOGY, returning to the PCC in solo screenings. BLUE - 12th April & 1st May • WHITE - 26th April & 15th May • RED - 11th May & 29th May!

This April, legendary Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski's THREE COLOURS TRILOGY returns to the Prince Charles Cinema! The films making up Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours trilogy are BLUE (1993)WHITE (1994) and RED (1994), representing the colours of the French flag. The films also thematically represent the classic themes of the French republic: liberty, equality and fraternity. Despite this, Kieślowski jokingly said the names of the films could have been different had he found funding elsewhere. Had the funds come from , he often said the film titles could have been Black, Red and Yellow.

Kieślowski filmed all three films in quick succession from September 1992 to May 1993, with each premiering consecutively at the three major European film festivals. Blue debuted at Venice Film Festival in September 1993, winning the Golden Lion. White debuted at Berlin in February 1994, with Kieślowski winning the Silver Bear for Directing. Red debuted at Cannes in May 1994, but lost the Palme d'Or to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Critics and audiences alike have hailed the THREE COLOURS trilogy as a masterpiece of modern cinema, praising Kieślowski's poetic storytelling, rich symbolism, and deeply humanist themes. BLUE is often lauded for Juliette Binoche’s mesmerizing performance, WHITE for its sharp blend of comedy and drama, and RED for its intricate narrative connections and stunning cinematography. The trilogy as a whole remains one of the most profound explorations of fate, love, and interconnectedness in film history.

These films are always super popular at The PCC, so don't miss your opportunity to catch them, with RED presented in a 4K restoration! Book your tickets today HERE!

The Films of SEAN BAKER! 5i1660 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/the-films-of-sean-baker/ letterboxd-story-35484 Tue, 1 Apr 2025 08:13:14 +1300 <![CDATA[

We’re bringing you a season of six selections from THE FILMS OF SEAN BAKER. Starting with TAKE OUT then PRINCE OF BROADWAY, TANGERINE, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, RED ROCKET and finally more screenings of 2025’s Best Picture winner ANORA!

We’re excited to present a season dedicated to one of the most original and vital voices in contemporary cinema - SEAN BAKER. A filmmaker who brings true authenticity and electricity to the screen, Baker has spent his career telling stories about those often overlooked by mainstream Hollywood. From immigrant workers to sex workers, hustlers to dreamers, his films are vibrant, comionate, and always deeply human.

Leading the season is ANORA, Baker’s latest triumph and the Best Picture winner at this year’s Academy Awards. A sharp, heartfelt, and unexpectedly thrilling story, it follows a Brooklyn stripper who finds herself swept into the chaos of love, money, and power when she marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Blending Baker’s signature verité style with biting humor and raw emotion, Anora cements his place as one of today’s most vital filmmakers.

We then rewind to 2004’s TAKE OUT, an astonishingly intimate portrait of an undocumented Chinese delivery worker scrambling to pay off a mounting debt. Shot on a shoestring budget with real locations and non-professional actors, it’s a gripping early showcase of Baker’s ability to capture everyday struggles with depth and authenticity. Then from 2008 is Baker’s third feature, PRINCE OF BROADWAY, which follows a Ghanaian hustler selling counterfeit goods in New York City. An unsentimental look at the American Dream from the perspective of those chasing it against all odds. Shot in Baker’s signature guerrilla style, it’s stuffed full of realism and heart.

With 2015’s TANGERINE, Baker burst into the mainstream with a kinetic, wildly entertaining story of two trans sex workers navigating a chaotic Christmas Eve in L.A. Shot entirely on an iPhone, it revolutionized indie filmmaking as we know it and instantly became an alternative Christmas classic. Then came, 2017’s THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a sun-drenched genuine masterpiece of childhood wonder and economic doom set on the fringes of Disney World and featuring an Oscar-nominated and should’ve been Oscar winning performance from Willem Dafoe!

Finally, Baker’s second to last picture may have my personal favourite, as RED ROCKET takes us to the Texas Gulf Coast, where a washed-up adult film star returns home in search of redemption…or just another hustle. Shot during the Covid-19 lockdown, on a shoestring budget and on beautiful 16mm film. Star Simon Rex delivers a career-reviving performance as the sleazy but charismatic Mikey Saber in this darkly funny character study.

This season is a celebration of a filmmaker who has redefined independent cinema, telling urgent, comionate, and visually stunning stories about people on the margins. Don’t miss this chance to experience the bold, beautiful, and uniquely American cinema of SEAN BAKER on the big screen, TICKETS HERE!

THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY 1f3e23 EXTENDED EDITIONS in 4K! 🏔️ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/the-lord-of-the-rings-trilogy-extended-editions/ letterboxd-story-35188 Tue, 25 Mar 2025 23:31:06 +1300 <![CDATA[

That’s right, Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY: EXTENDED EDITIONS are back over the next few months as part of our famous All-Night & All Day Marathons and as individual shows in 4K!

Yes! One of our most popular features, Peter Jackson’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY: EXTENDED EDITIONS, are almost upon us once again in both back to back All-nighter screenings and individual shows! Plus, you guessed it, it’s the Extended Editions! This means you get all the extra scenes, original music and extended credits for all the thousands of people who worked on those movies.

For generations, people have been spellbound by the exploits of Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn and their comrades as they journey towards Mordor to do battle with the Dark Lord Sauron, and destroy the One Ring in the flames of Mount Doom. The archetype of the high fantasy genre, J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS is one of the best-selling book series of all-time, with over 150 million copies sold worldwide, and having been translated into more than 40 languages. If there was any work of fiction that deserved to be adapted to the big screen – this surely was it. Many attempted over the years and the iconoclast of animation Ralph Bakshi managed to get an animated version of the first two books in 1978’s The Lord of the Rings with Rankin and Bass producing TV specials for The Hobbit and The Return of The King, but there wouldn’t be a live action adaptation for another 23 years.

This, of course, would be Peter Jackson's live-action epic THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY. The three films were shot simultaneously in Jackson's native New Zealand from October 1999 to December 2000, making it one of the most ambitious film productions ever. The gamble would pay off, with the series as a whole earning over $2.9 billion and winning 17 Academy Awards, including Best Picture for the final instalment, The Return of the King.

We are so excited to have these beloved epics back where they belong. So scroll down to book today... us for this butt-numbing marathon that sells out every time, and individual shows of each film across April. Come with us to the end, to the very fires of Mordor! TICKETS HERE!

STUDIO GHIBLI is back! 18142j https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/studio-ghibli-is-back/ letterboxd-story-35144 Tue, 25 Mar 2025 06:23:53 +1300 <![CDATA[

STUDIO GHIBLI finally returns to the PCC! We’re giving you a triple offering of Miyazaki classics - SPIRITED AWAY, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO & THE BOY AND THE HERON!

There is no animation house like Studio Ghibli. Since 1985, they have enthralled millions with their films - which so perfectly capture the beauty of stillness, our connection to nature, and seamlessly fuse reality with fantasy.

Whether we are immersed in a bathhouse for spirits, a pig jet pilot in fighting sky pirates, or marvel at a warrior princess protecting the forest gods, Ghibli films bring magic to every moment, every frame. But the magic isn't just because of the fantastical, John Bauer-esque story-lines.

We can also simply follow an over-worked woman's train ride. Sit, for a moment, with a character looking at a stream. Nothing is rushed or gratuitous, and these moments of stillness draw us into the magnificent, hand-drawn worlds. "We have a word for that in Japanese," said Ghibli co-founder and director Hayao Miyazaki in a 2002 interview, "It's called ma. Emptiness. It's there intentionally. (...) The people who make (American) movies are scared of silence, so they want to paper and plaster it over. They're worried that the audience will get bored. They might go up and get some popcorn."

And yet, when watching a Ghibli film, you won't want to take your eyes off the screen. Not even for a second. From the 18th of July, a slate of three classic Studio Ghibli pictures, SPIRITED AWAY, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO & THE BOY AND THE HERON, will play in our big auditorium. Grab your tickets HERE, and maybe we’ll add a few more Ghibli selections soon…

PRIDE and PREJUDICE at the PCC! n4x26 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/pride-and-prejudice-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-35007 Fri, 21 Mar 2025 23:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

Joe Wright’s beloved adaptation of Jane Austen’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. Catch this beloved favourite of TikTok on the big screen for TWO WEEKS ONLY from Friday 25th April to Thursday 8th May!

20 years ago, Joe Wright delivered his feature film debut in the form of the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's 1813 romantic satire PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. There have been many direct and loose adaptations of the novel over the years, but few have captured the beauty and charm like the Wright's version (yes, we know about the 1995 TV mini-series).

The film stars Keira Knightley, who was hot off the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, as Elizabeth Bennett, while the relatively unknown at the time Matthew Macfadyen (now hugely known from Succession) plays her romantic interest Mr. Darcy. The cast also features a who's who of stars, including Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland as Mrs. and Mr. Bennett, Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, Jena Malone and Taluah Riley as the Bennett sisters, and Judi Dench as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Upon release, the film was met with mixed reviews. You had Austen purists who weren't pleased with some of the changes and deviations from the source material. You also had the fans of the 1995 mini-series refusing to give it a chance. But over the years, the movie has found a cult following, with a young generation of Austen fans defending it on the battlegrounds of Twitter and Tumblr, and a newfound life has been found on TikTok through countless edits, and particularly with the hand flex scene. There were even some older fans of the film making themselves known, when it was discovered that a 51-year-old woman in Chile watched the film 278 times on Netflix in 2017!

We're not telling you to come see it 278 times. But we are asking for you to at least come out at least once as PRIDE AND PREJUDICE screens in celebration for a limited window of two weeks only from Friday 25th April to Thursday 8th May. Tickets are HERE!

EVANGELION AT THE PCC! 65102r https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/evangelion-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-34965 Thu, 20 Mar 2025 23:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

Witness some true anime masterpieces on the big screen, as we screen two companion pieces to Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion – EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² and THE END OF EVANGELION in Double Feature on Friday 18th April and in solo performances throughout May and June! Plus, we have the return of Hideaki Anno’s epic 2023 masterpiece EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME this July! Tickets HERE.

If you don't already know, Hideaki Anno's NEON GENESIS EVANGELION was a mecha anime TV series that aired from October 1995 to March 1996. After only 26 episodes, the show that touched on religious mysticism, psychoanalytic theory, and awkward teens piloting giant robots, ended; causing a rupture within its ionate fanbase. Over the years, the groundbreaking anime, which sparked a massive franchise, has seen its popularity and influence spread worldwide; including the Angels in the show becoming the inspiration for the design of the alien "Jean Jacket" in Jordan Peele's Nope.

In 1997, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth was released as a companion piece feature film to recap the first 24 episodes of the series, along with additional animation created after the show’s original broadcast. Over the years, the film has been re-edited and re-released several times, including as EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)². Functioning as both a recap and a partial reimagining of the TV series, the film condenses the series’ key events into a nonlinear, fragmented format, blending newly animated sequences with existing footage to provide a more abstract, psychological perspective on the characters' struggles.

Two years after the end of the original series, creator Hideaki Anno returned to retell the ‘true’, definitive ending on the big screen. The result was THE END OF EVANGELION, a bold, challenging and confrontational feature that delivered cinematic spectacle while also digging deeper than ever before into the series’ psychological and emotional bedrock. It also pulled back the curtain, breaking the fourth wall to reveal the trials of those behind the scenes – most specifically Anno himself, who used the film to explore his relationship with otaku fandom and his struggles with depression. The film is essentially a retelling of the final two episodes of the original anime, and pairs nicely with EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² as an entry point to the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe.

See these two anime masterpieces on the big screen, as EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² and THE END OF EVANGELION show in a Double Feature on Friday 18th April, as well as solo performances for EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² on 3rd, 20th & 30th May and THE END OF EVANGELION on 7th, 17th & 27th June, TICKETS HERE!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plus, don’t miss the return of Hideaki Anno’s EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME this July! The fourth and final instalment of the REBUILD OF EVANGELION films, this film brings an epic conclusion to the story of Shinji and his fellow Eva pilots, with the stunning visuals and thought-provoking storytelling that has made EVANGELION a global pop culture phenomenon.

Hideaki Anno has openly discussed how he suffered from severe depression during the making of the original series. He described himself as "a wreck, unable to do anything (...). The story has not yet ended in my mind.”

But the story never left him, and in 2002 he announced his intentions to remake and reimagine the show into films. Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time is the final chapter, a definitive ending to this ground-breaking odyssey. Japanese culture critic and philosopher Hiroki Azuma called the film a "grand masterpiece", able to tackle its enormous themes with bravado.

Step into a world of international cinema with our truly massive WORLD CINEMA season at the PCC, a celebration of cinematic masterpieces from across the globe. Non-English language cinema has never been more popular on our screens, as cinema once thought of as art-house can sell out our downstairs screen. Our programme really reflects this shift in cinematic tastes, bringing together films that challenge, inspire, and transport audiences into different cultures and perspectives. Let us highlight just a few.

One of the highlights is AUTUMN SONATA, Ingmar Bergman’s deeply emotional drama that explores the fraught relationship between a world-renowned pianist and her estranged daughter. Featuring powerhouse performances from Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann, the film is a poignant meditation on family, guilt, and the age of time. Another must-see is THREE COLOURS: WHITE, Krzysztof Kieślowski’s sharp and darkly comedic examination of love, revenge, and fate. The middle chapter of his acclaimed Three Colours trilogy, the film follows a Polish man humiliated by his French ex-wife as he sets out to rebuild his life and turn the tables on her in unexpected ways.

Akira Kurosawa’s HIGH AND LOW is a masterful crime thriller that explores the moral dilemmas of a wealthy businessman who is blackmailed when kidnappers mistakenly take his chauffeur’s son instead of his own. As the police investigation unfolds, the film shifts from an intense chamber drama to a gripping procedural, revealing Kurosawa’s signature storytelling precision. Meanwhile, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT presents a riveting drama about love, obsession, and power struggles between a successful fashion designer and the young woman she desires. Set entirely in one apartment, the film’s striking visual compositions and raw emotional intensity make it one of Fassbinder’s most celebrated works, of which many others will play at the PCC.

Finally, STALKER, Andrei Tarkovsky’s hypnotic sci-fi masterpiece, follows a guide known as a “stalker” leading two men into a mysterious forbidden zone where their deepest desires may be fulfilled. Combining philosophy, dreamlike visuals, and an atmosphere thick with mystery, the film is a profound exploration of human longing and the unknown. This one has always been popular, and has set the groundwork for more World Cinema to thrive on our big screen!

And that's just a glimpse of what’s on offer! With nearly 50 more incredible features available in our WORLD CINEMA programme, there’s something for every cinephile to discover. Browse the full lineup HERE!

PERFECT BLUE and ANIME at the PCC! 3v2c6z https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/perfect-blue-and-anime-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-34743 Sun, 16 Mar 2025 23:00:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

It's been over 25 years since the late-great Satoshi Kon's eerily prescient feature debut was released. The anime thriller was way ahead of its time, as it predicted the dark age of internet celebrity; depicting the fame free-fall, sinister fandoms and a young woman's descent into insanity on and offline.

Much like how Kon's Paprika would influence Christopher Nolan's Inception, PERFECT BLUE heavily influenced Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. Had the director lived long enough to continue making animated dreamscapes, who knows who else he would have inspired.

The story follows rising pop star Mima has quit singing to pursue a career as an actress and model, but her fans aren’t ready to see her go… Encouraged by her managers, Mima takes on a recurring role on a popular TV show, when suddenly her handlers and collaborators begin turning up murdered. Harboring feelings of guilt and haunted by visions of her former self, Mima’s reality and fantasy meld into a frenzied paranoia. As her stalker closes in, in person and online, the threat he poses is more real than even Mima knows, in this iconic psychological thriller that has frequently been hailed as one of the most important animated films of all time.

After selling out our largest screen a couple of weeks ago, PERFECT BLUE is back for an encore presentation on Friday, 28th March. Don't miss this unbelievable anime classic on the big screen. TICKETS FOR THIS and way more ANIME, HERE!

AKIRA KUROSAWA r625z THE EMPEROR OF JAPANESE CINEMA! https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/akira-kurosawa-the-emperor-of-japanese-cinema/ letterboxd-story-34741 Sat, 15 Mar 2025 23:00:04 +1300 <![CDATA[

us this Spring and Summer, as we present a selection of classics from the master Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa. This strand will feature his heaviest of hitters like SEVEN SAMURAI, IKIRU and DRUNKEN ANGEL, as well as some of his lesser-screened classics such as HIGH AND LOW, STRAY DOG, THE BAD SLEEP WELL, I LIVE IN FEAR, and THE MEN WHO TREAD ON THE TIGER’S TAIL.

In Japan, he is referred to as "Kurosawa Tennō", which translates to “The Emperor”. Across the world, Akira Kurosawa is widely regarded as a master of cinema. The filmmaker has a staggering 8 entries in the Letterboxd Top 250. Perhaps most celebrated for his grand jidaigeki films—period films with vast vistas, wandering samurai, and great battles—Kurosawa has blessed us with several of these masterpieces, including his pièce de résistance SEVEN SAMURAI (#4 in Letterbox Top 250). You can see this classic on our biggest screen in 4K on 13th April and 22nd May.

However, this Spring and Summer, we’re excited to be bringing back some of the lesser-screened classics from Kurosawa’s vast filmography. These include a selection of his noir films, his post-war atomic scare fare, and a few other early features, including Kurosawa’s first collaboration with the iconic Toshirō Mifune, DRUNKEN ANGEL. This early noir see Mifune burst onto the screen as a volatile, tubercular criminal who strikes up an unlikely relationship with Takashi Shimura's (another Kurosawa favourite) jaded physician. Set in postwar Tokyo's swamps and alleys, Drunken Angel is an evocative and moody film with a memorable violent climax.

Also in the strand, you can find the #5 film on the Letterbox Top 250, Kurosawa’s 1963 procedural drama, HIGH AND LOW. Mifune stars as King Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper.
This feature sees Kurosawa adapt Ed McBain's King's Ransom into a thrilling race-against-time and sharp social commentary on contemporary Japanese society.

Plus, find noir classics like STRAY DOG, seeing Mifune as a rookie cop tracking down his stolen pistol and Takashi Shimura as a seasoned detective trying to keep him in line. One of the earliest detective movies, the film is a precursor to the modern police procedural and buddy cop film genres. The season also sees the return of IKIRU (#16 on Letterboxd Top 250), one of Kurosawa’s greatest films. Takashi Shimura stars in this comionate film about an ageing bureaucrat with stomach cancer searching for meaning in his final days.

We’ll also see one of Kurosawa’s earliest works, the once banned THE MEN WHO TREAD ON THE TIGER’S TAIL. A feudal period piece, the film was banned in 1945 by the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers and not officially released until 1952 following the g of the Treaty of San Francisco. We’ll close out the strand with the post-war atomic fear classic I LIVE IN FEAR, and the 1960 film noir classic that features a bit of Hamlet, THE BAD SLEEP WELL.

Spend your Spring and Summer exploring some of these classics from the legendary Akira Kurosawa. With performances ranging from 35mm and Digital, you don’t want to miss these gems on the big screen, the way they were meant to be seen. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE!

NICOLAS CAGE in THE SURFER! 🏄‍♂️ 4w5h5h https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/nicolas-cage-in-the-surfer/ letterboxd-story-34483 Wed, 12 Mar 2025 02:00:02 +1300 <![CDATA[

Nic Cage’s newest cinematic freak-out lands at the PCC on Friday, 2nd May for special PREVIEW screenings. And what’s not to love? There’s surfing. There are aggressive Australian surfer dudes. There’s paranoia, horror, and even cult worship. Then, there’s Nicolas Cage, clad in a wetsuit, doing what he does best: freaking out, melting down, and acting like a lunatic.

Nicolas Cage is a true staple at the PCC, with his films always drawing devoted audiences to our screens. In recent years we’ve basked in a kind of Cage-aissance as we screened, the meditative brilliance of PIG to the meta-madness of THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT and the surreal genius of DREAM SCENARIO, Cage’s work has left an undeniable mark on our cinema. Whether it’s his cult classics or his latest releases, we love showcasing his films, and our audiences can’t get enough. Now, we’re thrilled to continue that tradition with special early preview screenings of what might be the best of the bunch, THE SURFER - TICKETS HERE

In THE SURFER, Cage takes on one of his most intense roles yet, playing a man who returns to his childhood beach with his son, only to be confronted by a hostile group of territorial local surfers. What starts as an uneasy stand-off quickly escalates into a nightmarish battle for dominance against those whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” As the oppressive sun and waves mirror his descent into desperation and defiance, he is pushed to his breaking point. Directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium), this psychological horror thriller blends sun-soaked beauty with psychedelia. Expect Cage at his most unhinged, as he brings raw emotion and energy to a film that’s already being hailed as one of his all-time best.

Drawing on influences from surreal existential dramas like THE SWIMMER (1968) and the unsettling Aussie psychological horror of WAKE IN FRIGHT (1971), THE SURFER explores themes of alienation, identity, and the fragile nature of masculinity. Much like Burt Lancaster’s doomed suburbanite in THE SWIMMER, Cage’s character embarks on a journey that forces him to confront uncomfortable truths about himself. And, in the spirit of WAKE IN FRIGHT, the film taps into an oppressive, almost hallucinatory atmosphere where civilization unravels under the scorching sun. With its mix of psychological dread, sun-drenched menace, and a powerhouse central performance, THE SURFER is destined to be a future cult classic.

us at the Prince Charles Cinema for this must-see event and witness Nicolas Cage in his element - unpredictable, mesmerising, and absolutely unmissable. Whether you're a lifelong Cage fan or just love a good psychological thriller, THE SURFER, is bound to make waves. Secure your tickets HERE for our special PREVIEW screenings and be part of the Cage phenomenon once again.

They Were All Drawn to THE KEEP in 4K! 721453 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/they-were-all-drawn-to-the-keep-in-4k/ letterboxd-story-34244 Sun, 9 Mar 2025 02:00:05 +1300 <![CDATA[

Michael Mann’s legendary 1983 horror spectacle THE KEEP returns on 3rd & 23rd April! Don’t miss this mesmerising visual feast of supernatural terror on the big screen from a new 4K restoration!

A fascinating anomaly in his filmography, Michael Mann’s THE KEEP is a surreal, atmospheric horror-fantasy that stands out from the sleek crime dramas and thrillers he is best known for. Starring Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Jürgen Prochnow, Alberta Watson, and Ian McKellen, the film is adapted from F. Paul Wilson’s novel of the same name. Set during World War II, the story follows a group of Nazi soldiers who occupy an ancient fortress in the Carpathian Mountains, unknowingly unleashing an ancient evil. The supernatural entity, Molasar, begins picking off the soldiers while a mysterious drifter named Glaeken Trismegestus (Scott Glenn) is drawn to The Keep, seemingly destined to confront the creature.

The Keep contains all of Mann’s signature visual style, with its moody lighting, dreamlike cinematography, and an eerie, hypnotic electronic score by Tangerine Dream. However, the film was plagued by production issues, including extensive studio interference, drastic cuts to its runtime, and lost footage. Add in that two weeks into post-production, visual effects supervisor Wally Veevers died, causing massive amounts of problems because no one knew how he planned to finish the visual effects scenes in the movie. All this lead to a final version that feels disted and incomplete. The original cut was reportedly over three hours long, but Paramount forced Mann to trim it down to just under 100 minutes, resulting in a film with significant narrative gaps and abrupt character developments.

Despite its troubled history and lukewarm reception upon release, THE KEEP has developed a cult following over the years. Fans appreciate its unique atmosphere, ambitious blend of horror and fantasy, and its haunting, dreamlike aesthetic. After years of seeming unlikely, the film has finally been restored. This is lovely news for us here at the Prince Charles Cinema, where the film has been largely absent from our screens lately, as the 35mm print has sound issues.

Don’t miss Michael Mann’s second feature, THE KEEP, as it returns to the big screen from a new 4K Restoration – newly scanned and restored from its 35mm original camera negative – on 3rd & 23rd April. CLICK HERE to book today and to find even more Michael Mann on our screens…

A Nightly Dose of Noir 🚬 111r2c https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/a-nightly-dose-of-noir/ letterboxd-story-34243 Sat, 8 Mar 2025 02:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

From 21st March, have A NIGHTLY DOSE OF NOIR, as we showcase Film Noir classics throughout the week, seeing the likes of DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE BIG SLEEP, NIGHTFALL, LAURA, GILDA and IN A LONELY PLACE all back on the big screen!

The hard-boiled detective, the femme fatale, the corrupt official, the innocent bystander, the fallen hero and the anti-hero. These are the players, and often they are morally ambiguous, as they find themselves caught up in a world of crime and corruption. Add in stark lighting, deep shadows, and a healthy dose of cigarette smoke permeating the scene, and this is film noir.

The term film noir, meaning 'black film' or “dark film” in French, describes films with dark, moody themes and visuals. Its origins date back to the German Expressionist cinema of the 1920s and 1930s, when German filmmakers fled to Hollywood following the rise of the Nazi regime, bringing with them their visual and lighting techniques. Another important influence on film noir was the hard-boiled crime fiction of writers like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, who created gritty stories and complex characters, revealing America's darker aspects.

From Friday 21st March, catch a week-long engagement of some of the best films of the noir genre. This little strand kicks off on the Friday with Billy Wilder’s DOUBLE INDEMNITY, starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck as an insurance salesman and woman who plot to murder her husband for an insurance payout. We then move to a bona-fide classic with Howard Hawks’ THE BIG SLEEP. Based on the pulp novel by Raymond Chandler, Humphrey Bogart stars as Detective Philip Marlowe, alongside Lauren Bacall as Vivian Rutledge in a story that begins with blackmail and leads to multiple murders.

We’ll follow this up with Jacques Tourneur’s NIGHTFALL, starring Aldo Ray as an artist finds himself falsely accused of bank robbery and murder and is pursued by the authorities and the real killers, it shows from 35mm. Then, we finally see some of these femme fatale’s take the lead as we have both Otto Preminger’s LAURA, starring Gene Tierney as a woman wanted for murder, and Charles Vidor’s GILDA, starring the sultry Rita Hayworth in her most iconic role as the much-lusted-after wife of a criminal kingpin.

Finally, we close up the week with another Bogie classic, as we present Nicolas Ray’s adaptation of Dorothy B. Hughes' IN A LONELY PLACE. Humphrey Bogart stars as Dix Steele, a troubled, violence-prone screenwriter, who is, you guessed it, suspected of murder. It is known for being one of the early films to comment on the pitfalls of celebrity and near-celebrity status in Hollywood, and shows from 35mm.

Take in these Film Noir classics, with daily screenings from Friday 21st March. Book your tickets HERE!

International Women's Day at the PCC! q6b17 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/international-womens-day-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-34128 Fri, 7 Mar 2025 02:00:04 +1300 <![CDATA[

On this Saturday March 8th, we’ve got some special programming going on as we celebrate International Women’s Day with a savage selection of films entirely directed by women.

While it might be slightly unusual for us at The Prince Charles Cinema to take up an entire day of programming with a single theme. We thought this year’s International Women’s Day celebration was the perfect mix of timing and opportunity to screen back to back features directed entirely by some of our favourite female directors.

We’ll start with our evening offerings as we’re screening the Wachowski Sisters BOUND (1996) at 5pm. The film that cemented them as uniquely bold filmmakers. This deeply erotic thriller, reclaims the noir genre from its male-dominated roots, placing two women at the centre of the story, giving them total agency in both their love and their crime. By refusing to exploit the characters’ queerness, it instead crafts a story where their romance is and empowerment is centre stage.

Next up at 7:30pm is Chantal Akerman’s JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES (1975), a towering achievement in feminist filmmaking. A rigorous, nearly hypnotic portrayal of a widowed mother’s daily routine, the film achingly slowly reveals the crushing monotony of domestic life and the unspoken pressures placed on women. With its long takes, Akerman’s film totally redefined cinematic language and, in 2022, made history by topping Sight and Sound’s once-a-decade poll as the greatest film of all time. A masterclass in patience, it remains an essential work of feminist and avant-garde cinema.

Then, finally we drift into the close of our celebration at 7:45pm with Sofia Coppola’s dreamy, melancholic LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003). The film follows two lost souls—played by Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson—who form an unlikely yet deeply affecting connection in the neon glow of Tokyo. With Coppola’s signature visual elegance, the film delicately captures themes of loneliness, cultural dislocation, and fleeting deep human connection. This wonderful film earned Coppola the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, solidifying her as one of the most distinctive voices in all of modern cinema.

We being our day with iconic French director Claire Denis’ highly acclaimed unsentimental, subtly homoerotic drama BEAU TRAVAIL. In Sight and Sound’s 2022 poll of filmmakers and critics, BEAU TRAVAIL ranked as the 7th best movie of all time.

Followed up by milestone Czech New Wave film DAISIES (1966) at 14:30. Directed by Věra Chytilová, it follows two young women, both named Marie, as they engage in a series of bizarre and anarchic pranks. A cornerstone of the Czech New Wave, DAISIES is a playful yet incisive shot against the societal constraints, patriarchy, and consumerism of its time. By focusing on two carefree, rebellious young women who refuse to conform, Chytilová created a film that challenged both cinematic norms in her country and gender expectations, cementing her as a pioneer of feminist cinema. The film was banned from screening in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

Next on our lineup for the day screenings, at 16:30, is Kathryn Bigelow’s adrenaline-fueled action thriller POINT BREAK (1991). As the first woman to ever win the Academy Award for Best Director, Bigelow made huge waves long before that with this exhilarating, sun-soaked heist film. Starring Keanu Reeves as an undercover FBI agent and Patrick Swayze as the enigmatic leader of a group of bank-robbing surfers, Point Break blends game-changing frenetic action sequences with a philosophical undercurrent. Bigelow truly redefined a traditionally masculine genre.

We've also added screenings of Mary Harron's AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000) and Vera Drew's new self portrait superhero flick THE PEOPLE'S JOKER.

SANSHO THE BAILIFF at the PCC! z59 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/sansho-the-bailiff-at-the-pcc/ letterboxd-story-34001 Thu, 6 Mar 2025 02:00:02 +1300 <![CDATA[

One of the towering masterpieces in Japanese cinema, Kenji Mizoguchi SANSHO THE BAILIFF arrives to our screens on 1st and 14th April. The film will play as part of our Letterboxd Top 250 strand, where it currently ranks #56.

Mizoguchi is one of four pillars of the golden age of Japanese cinema, alongside Yasujirō Ozu, Akira Kurosawa and Mikio Naruse. He was tremendously prolific in his short life of only 58 years, churning out nearly 90 films in his silent period between 1922 and 1935. However, it was his last dozen films where he really made a name for himself around the world.

In particular, one of his three masterpieces, alongside Ugetsu and The Life of Oharu, was 1954’s SANSHO THE BAILIFF - Mizoguchi’s tragic folk saga of the tribulations of an exiled governor’s family in feudal Japan. Set in Japan’s distant past, the film, based on the 1915 short story by Mori Ōgai, tells the heartbreaking story of a brother and sister, the children of a noble governor, who are kidnapped and sold as slaves to the cruel bailiff Sansho (Eitaro Shindo).

Filming in his signature long, flowing takes, the Mizoguchi builds inexorably to an emotionally devastatingly climax. Don’t miss this beautiful and devastating film, one of the greatest in Japanese cinema, as SANSHO THE BAILIFF screens on 1st and 14th April. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE.

If you watch the trailer, you are left wondering, “What the hell is going on in this film?” You’ve got video stores, you’ve got robberies, you’ve got samurai swords, the Golden State Warriors, Pedro Freaking Pascal, and more? Lionsgate describes the movie as “a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters— an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector—on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.” It’s a “pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humour, gory kills, and sly twists and turns [that] makes for one wild ride.”

THE SEARCHERS and more 70mm! o4j5 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/the-searchers-and-more-70mm/ letterboxd-story-34010 Tue, 4 Mar 2025 02:00:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

One of the greatest films of all time. See John Ford’s ultimate western, THE SEARCHERS, in a rare and glorious 70mm presentation this March!

John Ford’s THE SEARCHERS isn’t just one of the greatest Westerns of all time, it’s one of the greatest films ever made. Starring John Wayne in a career-defining role as the relentless and deeply flawed Ethan Edwards, the film follows his obsessive years-long quest to find his kidnapped niece. It’s a gripping story of vengeance, morality, and American identity, wrapped in some of the most stunning cinematography ever put to screen.

Shot in VistaVision and now presented in glorious 70mm, THE SEARCHERS is a film that demands to be seen on the big screen. With every frame meticulously composed against the vast, breathtaking landscapes of Monument Valley, Ford and cinematographer Winton C. Hoch crafted an unforgettable visual experience, one that has influenced legends like David Lean and Sam Peckinpah, who paid direct tribute to the film in Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia (showing March 12th). Ford didn’t shy away from presenting a very problematic and controversial central character. As uncomfortable as it is, the story continues to inspire discussions about its intricate portrayal of morality and American identity.

Originally shot in VistaVision and blown up to 70mm, it is a film that benefits immensely from the enhanced detail, depth, and color saturation that this large format provides.

Don’t miss this rare chance to see THE SEARCHERS in 70mm at the Prince Charles Cinema on March 15th, 18th & 20th! Big screen, epic Western, absolute cinema. Book now HERE!

DAVID LYNCH FOREVER! 2d6k https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/david-lynch-forever/ letterboxd-story-34006 Mon, 3 Mar 2025 02:00:02 +1300 <![CDATA[

Step into the surreal, fantastical, and nightmarish world of the late-great David Lynch, as our DAVID LYNCH FOREVER season rolls on. See works from the master filmmaker’s entire career, from his Short Films and his feature debut ERASERHEAD to his final film INLAND EMPIRE. We now have even more opportunities to relive favourites like BLUE VELVET, WILD AT HEART, LOST HIGHWAY and his 2001 magnum opus MULHOLLAND DR. showing from 35mm!

Last year, we began an odyssey of celebrating the works of our favourite enigma, David Lynch. It was a celebration of the fascinating body of work from the eagle scout, abstract expressionist, and transcendental meditator that has captivated audiences for nearly five decades. His films are like M.C. Escher paintings come to life, with an infinite level of cool and sex appeal that is rarely found in cinema.

It was a season that we’ve run numerous times over the years. One that was always very popular. However, we didn’t know at the time that certain titles in the strand would become so popular that’d we’d still be showing them a year later. So popular, that we dedicated a day to Mr. Lynch and these works in early February.

Then, the sad news broke in late January that the master filmmaker shed his mortal coil, and this became less of a season and more of a memorial. It has been touching to see all the people coming out to pay tribute to one of cinema’s most unique voices.

With that, we’ve rebranded the strand to DAVID LYNCH FOREVER. Within you will find screenings of the late director’s entire filmography. This includes loads of performances of his 2001 masterpiece and #1 greatest film of the 21st Century in the BBC Culture poll in 2016 MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Plus, catch more showings of his debut feature ERASERHEAD (the closest thing to a nightmare ever put to screen), his Academy Award-nominated second feature THE ELEPHANT MAN, his 1986 suburban nightmare BLUE VELVET, the 1990 black comedy crime film WILD AT HEART, the neo-noir thriller LOST HIGHWAY, his most-heartfelt and straightest story THE STRAIGHT STORY, and his final feature INLAND EMPIRE

Each of these films will screen throughout March and April, with Lynch’s entire filmography, including THE SHORT FILMS OF DAVID LYNCH and his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic DUNE, all screening over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Plus, we have a DAVID LYNCH MARATHON, featuring back-to-back screenings of Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive in one night. Our first marathons on 31st May sold out extremely fast, so we’ve added an encore performance on Saturday 26th July.

Everything Lynch touched was wild, cinematic magic. Don’t miss some of the most beautiful, thought-provoking, and often baffling films ever conceived, as our DAVID LYNCH FOREVER season continues. GET YOUR TICKETS FOR OUR FULL SEASON HERE.

Three Masterpieces from Francis Ford Coppola... 1864 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/three-masterpieces-from-francis-ford-coppola/ letterboxd-story-34003 Sun, 2 Mar 2025 02:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

We're showing three masterpieces from one of the all-time greats. Starting with THE CONVERSATION on 35mm, then APOCALYPSE NOW & THE GODFATHER. Get your tickets HERE!

Let’s begin our triple Francis Ford Coppola journey with the Palme d'Or-winning 1974 mystery thriller, THE CONVERSATION starring the late great Gene Hackman and showing from 35mm in our biggest screen, on Wed 26th March & Sat 12th April.

Fresh off the massive success of The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola cemented his place in cinematic history in 1974—not only releasing the Academy Award-winning The Godfather Part II but also writing, producing, and directing the masterful mystery thriller THE CONVERSATION.

One of the all-time greats, Gene Hackman, delivers a career-defining performance as Harry Caul, a secretive and paranoid surveillance expert who faces a crisis of conscience when he suspects a couple he is spying on may be in danger. As he obsessively replays the tapes, Caul fears that turning them over to his client (Robert Duvall) could lead to deadly consequences. Haunted by a past case that resulted in tragedy, Caul spirals into paranoia, forcing him into a harrowing moral dilemma.

THE CONVERSATION was partially inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 thriller Blowup, which also influenced Brian De Palma’s Blow Out (1981). Though Coppola originally wrote the script in the mid-1960s, the film took on unexpected real-world relevance when the Watergate scandal broke. Audiences assumed it was a direct response to the era’s political paranoia, but Coppola maintained that the surveillance technology featured in the film was developed through meticulous research and the expertise of technical advisor Martin Kaiser.

Upon release, THE CONVERSATION won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture—though Coppola lost out to himself with The Godfather Part II. The film also received BAFTA wins and several Golden Globe nominations, solidifying its status as one of the defining thrillers of the decade. RIP Gene.

Some filmmakers spend their whole careers chasing cinema’s top honors, but Francis Ford Coppola is one of the rare few to take home the prestigious Palme d’Or not once, but twice. First with The Conversation, and then with his utterly jaw-dropping, mind-melting, "was-this-film-even-possible-to-make?" war epic – APOCALYPSE NOW.

Set against the madness of the Vietnam War, Apocalypse Now takes Joseph Conrad’s classic novella Heart of Darkness and hurls it headfirst into the jungle. Martin Sheen stars as Captain Willard, sent on a dangerous mission to track down and terminate rogue Colonel Kurtz, played with eerie brilliance by Marlon Brando. Along the way? A hallucinatory, unforgettable trip featuring Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford, and a baby-faced 17-year-old Laurence Fishburne.
Coppola nearly lost his mind (and everything else) making this film, and if you want to see just how wild it got, the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse is an absolute must-watch.

But here’s the big news: we’re bringing back APOCALYPSE NOW: FINAL CUT – personally restored by Coppola himself from the original negative, this is the version he considers the definitive cut. And we’re showing it in glorious 4K on the big screen!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you’re gearing up for the ultimate Coppola weekend with THE CONVERSATION & APOCALYPSE NOW on Friday and Saturday, why not pre-prepare with the epic of all epics? Tomorrow night is our final forseeable screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic THE GODFATHER, showing from a 35mm print.

Widely considered the greatest film ever made, Coppola’s THE GODFATHER took Mario Puzo’s novel and turned it into an era-defining masterpiece. The film’s unprecedented success – eleven Oscar nominations, three wins, and two legendary sequels – cemented its place in cinema history.

Spanning three decades of blood, power, and betrayal, we follow Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone as he’s unwillingly pulled into the family business after the assassination of his brother Sonny (James Caan) and an attempt on the life of his father, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). He promises his wife Kay (Diane Keaton) he won’t become like his father – but power has a way of changing people…

KILLING ZOE from a 4K 35mm Print Scan! 6a3v3a https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/killing-zoe-from-a-4k-35mm-print-scan/ letterboxd-story-33999 Sat, 1 Mar 2025 04:43:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

Don’t miss the debut feature of Roger Avary, co-writer of Pulp Fiction, as KILLING ZOE returns from a new 4K scan of an original 35mm theatrical cut on Saturday 22nd March, featuring Introduction by Film Scanner - Peter Aldanmaz (Scanners Inc.)!

In 1993, Roger Avary, the Academy Award-winning co-writer of Pulp Fiction & co-host of the Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino, released his debut feature, KILLING ZOE. Now, for the first time since 2017, the bank heist film returns to the Prince Charles Cinema, showing from a new 4K scan!

Set on Bastille Day, the film follows Zed (Eric Stoltz), an American safe cracker who’s just landed in Paris to help his long-lost friend Eric (Jean-Hugues Anglade) with a bank heist. Before they reconnect, Zed spends the evening with an escort named Zoe (Julie Delpy), and the pair hit it off. On the day of the heist, the doomed job spirals into a bloody fiasco, with police surrounding the bank, and Zoe turning out to be one of the bank tellers.

The project got off the ground after producer Lawrence Bender was scouting locations for Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Bender came across a bank that he felt would be perfect to film in but wasn’t quite the right fit for Dogs. So he called up every writer he knew and asked if any of them were working on a screenplay that took place in a bank. When Avary got the call, he flat out lied and said yes. Two weeks later he had a rough draft for Killing Zoe ready to go.

Despite being set in Paris, the film was almost entirely shot in Los Angeles. Like True Romance for Tarantino, Killing Zoe seems to be Avary’s fantasy about what it’d be like if he was a gun-toting criminal and fell in love with a prostitute. In an interview for the DVD, Avary explains how he wanted to make a film about how nihilistic his generation was, and felt like he was seeing his evil twin come into creation when watching Eric Stoltz on screen.

While not held in the same regard as the contemporaries of its era, KILLING ZOE is a stylish crime film featuring all the sex, drugs, pop culture references and shockingly bloody violence that was popular at the time. It’s a must-see if you are a fan of the early works of Quentin Tarantino.

KILLING ZOE returns to the Prince Charles Cinema from a new 4K scan on Saturday 22nd March. On the night, we will be ed for a brief intro by Peter Aldanmaz aka NC-17, from Scanners, Inc., who was responsible for the 4K scan. According to Roger Avary, “This should be a unique experience. The 4K scans by @NCseventeen are from release prints with an attempt to preserve the original theatrical experience, grain, change marks, dust & damage, warts and all.”

And a massive thanks to Roger Avary and Gala Avary for giving us the go-ahead for this screening! GET YOUR TICKETS HERE.

MIDNIGHT RUN on 35mm! 51t5s https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/midnight-run-on-35mm/ letterboxd-story-33829 Wed, 26 Feb 2025 02:00:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

In 2018, Rolling Stone called MIDNIGHT RUN the “Casablanca of Buddy Comedies”. This 1988 throwback from Martin Brest saw Robert De Niro team up with the deadpan master Charles Grodin to deliver an endlessly funny action-comedy that deserves to be seen on the big screen!

De Niro plays Jack Walsh, a bounty hunter who is tasked with finding and returning fugitive ex-mob ant Jonathan “Duke” Mardukas (Grodin) to Los Angeles. Once he finds him, the pair must travel 3,000 miles across America, while being tailed by the FBI, the mafia, and a rival bounty hunter.

In an era where buddy comedies were prevalent, MIDNIGHT RUN stands out due to the performances put in by De Niro and Grodin. There’s something special about the bond between Jack and the Duke, and the onscreen chemistry between the two stars, that elevates their pairing even above their contemporaries. It’s a team up that nearly didn’t happen. De Niro, who had been looking to do a comedy after 15 years of intense method acting, only took the role after missing out on Big to Tom Hanks. Also, the studio nearly made the character of the Duke a woman played by Cher, hoping to generate some sexual tension. Director Martin Brest nixed the idea, as well as having Robin Williams in the role, as he was dazzled by Charles Grodin’s audition opposite De Niro. And boy was he right to do so!

If you want to see a match made in heaven, don’t miss Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in Martin Brest’s MIDNIGHT RUN, as it returns from 35mm on 16th March and 9th April. GET TICKETS HERE.

SILENT FILMS with LIVE SCORES! 3b2k16 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/thepcc/story/silent-films-with-live-scores/ letterboxd-story-33762 Tue, 25 Feb 2025 02:00:01 +1300 <![CDATA[

Hugo Max returns to provide a LIVE SCORE for three more SILENT FILMS at The PCC!

NOSFERATU (1922)
Sunday 27th Apr 17:20

HAXAN
Sunday 18th May 20:30

FAUST (1926)
Sunday 25th May 20:30

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the success of our previous Hugo Max Silent Film Live Score performances of both NOSFERATU, HAXAN, THE LODGER & THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, we’ve expanded the repertoire even further and are very excited to announce a screening of F.W Murnau’s 1926 classic, FAUST

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hugo Max makes another return to the Prince Charles Cinema on Sunday 18th May, with a film that debuted back in January to an ecstatic response.

Here is what Hugo Max had to say about the event:

"Benjamin Christensen’s Häxan is a film that must be seen to be believed. Playing out as a lecture on witchcraft ‘made flesh’, the film foreshadows the found footage horror genre and features many of the most imaginatively realised and grotesque visuals of silent cinema history. My viola takes on the voice of the occult-obsessed lecturer(/director), possessed by the alluring darkness of the subject, wrestling with the film’s message of hierarchical corruption and its prevailing controversies.

My improvisations on viola and piano draw inspiration from the leitmotifs and sound effects of 70s horror soundtracks and the languages of Second Viennese School composers contemporary to Murnau, also Jewish Traditional Music that informs my personal approach to creating a score for the film."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, we are back to the legendary F.W. Murnau and iconic German expressionist film, with one of the most famous silent movies of all-time, NOSFERATU, as it returns to the PCC for yet another Live Score performed by multi-instrumentalist Hugo Max.

Hugo says of Nosferatu that: "I first saw Murnau’s Symphony of Horror when I was nine years old. The film’s expressionistic images continue to haunt me, the chiaroscuro compositions tapping vividly into timeless subconscious fears”. Hugo Max even wrote an article in Little White Lies about scoring films like Nosferatu at The Prince Charles Cinema.

Delve into the horror of NOSFERATU as it graces the screen for what will definitely be a sold-out show on Sunday 27th April at 17:30! Complemented by a unique live score from Hugo Max. Secure your tickets now and don't miss out on this truly one of a kind historical cinematic experience!
