See this beautiful painting-like epic like you’ve never seen it, as it is presented from a new 4K restoration that was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative.

After an absence of nearly half a year, one of our most popular films of the last few years – Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 historical epic BARRY LYNDON is returning to The Prince Charles Cinema from a brand-new 4K restoration!

Stanley Kubrick redefined the historical drama with Barry Lyndon, transforming the genre into a coldly dazzling meditation on class, ambition, and human folly. Adapted from the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, the film follows the rise and fall of Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), a charming opportunist whose cunning carries him from a modest Irish upbringing to the battlefields of the Seven Years’ War and into the gilded salons of European aristocracy. Told in picaresque detail, Barry’s journey is both a grand adventure and a cynical exploration of how fortune and status are won—and inevitably lost.

Kubrick’s most visually sumptuous film, Barry Lyndon is renowned for its painstaking craftsmanship, from its opulent costume and production design to its use of natural light and candlelit interiors. Working with cinematographer John Alcott, Kubrick employed pioneering techniques to recreate the luminous textures of 18th-century painting, resulting in a film that is as formally exquisite as it is emotionally unflinching. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction, and stands today as a masterpiece: a gorgeously rendered, ruthlessly ironic portrait of a world whose elegance masks a deep moral emptiness.

About the Restoration:
Barry Lyndon is presented in the film’s photographed aspect ratio of 1.66:1, as specified in a December 8, 1975, letter from director Stanley Kubrick to projectionists. This new 4K restoration was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The high-definition transfer, created in 2000 under the supervision of Leon Vitali (Kubrick’s personal assistant), served as a colour reference for this restoration. The 5.1 surround audio mix was created from restored original soundtrack stems.
